Google the word, leadership, and you will get thousands of entries on leadership styles, leadership qualities, leadership training, leadership skills, leadership challenges, leadership techniques, leadership tools, and so on. The good news is that organizations recognize they need strong leadership to achieve results. The challenge is that there are so many different definitions, explanations, training programs, and interventions that it can be difficult to get a grasp on what leadership is, why you need it, and how to nurture it.

Evolutionary leadership is one of the newer terms related to leadership. It offers a multi-dimensional perspective drawn from the latest business school research, as well as positive psychology, integral theory, and spirituality. One definition of evolution is that it is a gradual process in which something changes into a different and usually better or more complex form. Other definitions talk about change that occurs over successive generations. So how do evolution and leadership come together?

Evolutionary leadership has less to do with what you do, and more to do with what you believe in and value. Evolutionary leaders are, by definition, self-aware and constantly strive to keep their egos in check. They are connected to a higher vision and know that becoming the best leader they can be is a process they will never complete. Instead of finding this discouraging, however, they are motivated and fueled by their sense of purpose to keep learning, and to push the boundaries of what cutting-edge leadership looks like, not only for themselves but for all of those who will follow. Craig Hamilton, the former editor of EnlighteNext magazine and the founder of Integral Enlightenment, elaborates on many of the concepts below in workshops he runs for thousands of learners all over the globe.

Dr. Bruce Berkowsky's 2016 Spiritual PhytoEssencing Training Intensive

Dr. Bruce Berkowsky is a master practitioner, and one of the world's preeminent teachers, of deep psycho-spiritual healing work with essential oils. In addition to essential oils providing benefit on a physical level, they also exert a strong influence upon the psycho-spiritual plane. Dr. Berkowsky designed the art of Spiritual PhytoEssencing (SPE) to help an individual overcome the separation from one's real self a core factor in much of the deep-seated psycho-spiritual disharmony we experience.

The real self is the deepest stratum of the self-structure, the one which directly connects to, and reflects, one's unique soul essence. The innermost aspect of the real self can be referred to as the inner spiritual self. When one operates from his or her real self as opposed to the ideal self (a compensated state a person constructs based upon the expectations and concepts of others), he or she evaluates life experiences based upon pre-thought level feeling and sensing and connection to spirit.

Operating from one's real self is the only viable pathway to self-actualization and thus the feeling of inner completion. On the other hand, charting one's course based upon the expectations and concepts of others, despite their incongruence with one's organic feeling, sensing and spirit guidance, obstructs self-actualization and leads to an inertial state of stuckness.

Plants are alive and anything living has being. In other words, plants, like humans and other animals are ensouled. In Spiritual PhytoEssencing, essential oil blends are constructed based upon the archetypal patterns of each oil's inner soul nature. Accordingly, essential oils are selected for inclusion in a customized essential blend on the basis of their congruence with certain aspects of a specific person's soul/real self archetypal pattern. Thus, when properly prepared, the completed blend represents a portrait in oils of that person's inner soul nature.

It is the encounter with soul-level congruence between the personalized blend and one's real self that encourages the latter to reassume its natural leadership role regarding the guidance of one's life course. Living totally moored within the artifice of the ideal self fosters an ongoing state of conflict arising from the incongruence between how one is informed by organic feeling, sensing and spirit connection and how one ultimately values and reacts to life experiences based upon externally controlled behavior. This state of continual incongruence must invariably lead to a state of chronic discontentment.

1) In-Depth Exploration of the Inner Nature of Four Essential Oils

The 2016 Training Intensive will feature in-depth exploration of the inner nature of four essential oils Balsam fir, bergamot, eucalyptus and gandhi root (also called sugandh mantri). Dr. Berkowsky's classes typically run between 2 and 2.5 hours each. The first half of each class is devoted to theory and review. The second half of four of the classes will be devoted to an in-depth exploration of the inner soul-nature of a specific essential oil. All students will also receive the Balsam fir; Bergamot; Eucalyptus and Gandhi root chapters (each chapter is typically 20 to 30 pages long) from Berkowsky's Synthesis Materia Medica/Spiritualis of Essential Oils

2) Sensory Animal Imagery Blend Development Training

Dr. Berkowsky developed the SPE customized animal imagery blends techniques after encountering the work of psychoanalyst Eligio Stephen Gallegos, Ph.D. In his book The Personal Totem Pole, Gallegos, one of the world's foremost experts on deep imagination (imagination emerging from the pre-conscious, soul realm as opposed to the faculty of imagination associated with everyday consciousness), describes how, in his psychoanalytic work, helping a person elaborate imaginal animals (beings which can only be elaborated via deep soul-level imagination) and then, through their actions being informed by them, resulted in deep-level emotional healing and personal growth. Once the imaginal animals are elaborated, they can be encouraged to develop a helping relationship with the person to whom they are indigenous.

Dr. Gallegos, who teaches his Personal Totem Pole Process to therapists and laypeople all around the world, found that these imaginal animals have a distinct association with the chakras and senses. In other words, an individual, when properly guided, elaborates a different imaginal creature from each chakra and/or each of the senses.

While all of this sounds somewhat primitive and beyond the bounds of rational thought, when one opens to the work, the experience is actually quite profound. Importantly, there is a difference between imaginal animals and imaginary ones. The former arise from the deepest layers of psychical existence and the soul-level artifacts of earlier periods in the human evolutionary journey. The latter are simply figments of one's everyday consciousness wherein imagination often serves as the engine of meaningless fantasizing.

Using some of Gallegos' central ideas and understandings, Dr. Berkowsky has developed the Spiritual PhytoEssencing chakra animal imagery blend and sensory animal imagery blend methods. In the 2016 Spiritual PhytoEssencing Training Intensive, the students will be taught how to develop a personalized sensory animal imagery blend.

In The Personal Totem Pole, Gallegos writes: Whereas the chakras are modes of action or power, the senses are modes of reception.

What we learn from the sensory animals is that some early injuries may have been dealt with at the level of the senses. Traumatic or injurious situations were encapsulated at the level of the sense organ, and perception of the event was thus modified in order to protect the child. The efferent sensory system [the system of feedback from the central nervous system to the sensory organ such, as the nose, itself], could readily accomplish such a change.

The modified input is represented in the sensory animals. Developing a relationship with them allows the quickest way I know for healing the injury and realigning the sensory organ with a relatively unbiased input.

The focus of the 2016 Spiritual PhytoEssencing Training Intensive layered blending training exercise (see below) will actually be the creation of a personalized sensory animal imagery blend. In other words, each person, using the 2016 Spiritual PhytoEssencing Training Intensive Essential Oil Set, will be guided to create his or her own personalized sensory animal imagery blend.

Similarly, the focus of the potentizing class (the final class of the training intensive; potentizing involves taking 2 drops of a personalized essential oil blend and, using a method developed by Dr. Berkowsky, producing a homeopathic-style dilution of the blend for internal use.) will be the development of a highly dilute homeopathic-style potency from the personalized sensory animal imagery blend each student created during the layered blending exercise.

This may be the last time Dr. Berkowsky personally teaches the SPE method. In the future, those who did not participate in this course, will have to rely on recordings of the potentizing method.

3) Layered Blending Training Exercise

As noted, a central feature of this course will be the layered blending training exercise during which Dr. Berkowsky will guide the students step-by-step in the preparation of a layered sensory animal imagery blend using the oils in the class oil set.

These oils, personally sourced by Dr. Berkowsky from around the world, are all of exquisite soul-level healing quality. The set, made available to students at a very reasonable price, is not included in the tuition fee. Students can opt to use their own oils for the blending exercise. However, the oils Dr. Berkowsky makes available are of extraordinary quality and most students are eager to work with them.

The eligibility to purchase the class oil set is one of the central attractions of this course. While the cost of this set is separate from the tuition fee, Dr. Berkowsky makes an extraordinary effort to keep the pricing remarkably reasonable so that everyone can afford to participate in the blending exercise.

Dr. Berkowsky personally sources the oils for this set from distillers all over the world. He spends months sampling oils from different distillers before constructing the set. He will only include oils that not only are grown or wild-harvested in an ecologically sensitive manner, but also are particularly rich in the plant-soul forces required for deep soul-level healing work with essential oils. Many students remark that the oils Dr. Berkowsky provides are the finest and most spiritually vibrant they have ever experienced.

The composition of this set of approximately 15 oils (5 ml each) will not be finalized until early March. The following oils will definitely be in the set: African tea tree oil, balsam fir, bergamot, clary sage, Douglas-fir, eucalyptus, frankincense, gandhi root, Jasmine auriculatum, high-altitude true lavender, lavender sage, lemon, monarda and Norway pine.

Spiritual PhytoEssencing (SPE), features the use of two types of essential oil blends: constitutional and situational. The constitutional blends include the: custom soul archetype pattern blend, chakra animal imagery blend, sensory animal imagery blend, gemstone mantra blend, and polarity synthesis blend (based upon leading concepts from the work of 19th century philosopher G.W.F. Hegel). All of these blends are customized to reflect the unique inner soul nature of one particular individual.

Situational blends are prepared to illuminate and activate key spiritual perspectives regarding specific life situations such as illness challenges, divorce, encountering a pivotal crossroad in one's life, dying, grieving, etc. Situational blends, while customized, are more limited in personal scope than constitutional custom blends, and can be formulated to be relevant for more than just one person.

All students will be preparing their own sensory animal imagery blend which, in accordance with the Spiritual PhytoEssencing blending method, will be constructed in layers.

Dr. Berkowsky will review the Spiritual PhytoEssencing alchemical blending techniques including: the surrounding essence, invisible sparks, jewel in the lotus, magic drops and soul star drops techniques. Each of these techniques is very subtle, yet powerful and serve as catalysts that increase the dynamic, soul-level healing potential of the blend.

4) Homeopathic-Style Potentization Training

The Spiritual PhytoEssencing potentizing technique involves taking 2 drops of a personalized essential oil blend and, using a method developed by Dr. Berkowsky, producing a homeopathic-style dilution of the blend for internal use. In this course, each student will be producing a highly dilute homeopathic-style potency from the personalized sensory animal imagery blend he or she created during the layered blending exercise.

5) Class Recordings

All classes will be recorded and so those who have scheduling conflicts and miss a class, can review the entire presentation whenever they like, at their own pace. The recordings also allow those who did attend the class the chance to review the class material as often as desired.

Schedule of Classes

There will be 6 classes in all (plus a free bonus Q&A/student feedback class).

The course begins on March 23rd and (including the layered blending exercise) concludes in late June. This provides a casual pace that allows for more extensive between-class study and review and blending time.

First Class: Wednesday, March 23rd @ 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time (8:00 p.m. Eastern Time). All classes except are presented at the same time.

Continuing Education Credit and Certification

Those who complete the entire course, including the blending and potentizing, will be eligible to receive a letter recommending the issuance of 20 CE credits. If a student does not participate in all the components of the course, the number of CE credits he or she will be eligible for will depend upon proportionate participation.

Certification Exam

Those students who participate in the 2016 SPE Training Intensive can sit for an optional certification exam (which includes submission of a sample of the blend the student prepared).

There are different levels of Spiritual PhytoEssencing certification. Those students who pass 3 certification exams are awarded the credential R.SPE.P. (Registered Spiritual PhytoEssencing Practitioner). For students who are interested in going on to earn a diploma in Spiritual PhytoEssencing and receive a Di.SPE (Diplomate of Spiritual PhytoEssencing) credential, passing the certification exam is necessary for this course to count as one of the six required Diploma Course (a tutored home-study course) study modules.

A marked difference stands between the nature of Daniels prayer and what is presently termed strategic-level intercession. Daniel never sought the names of these cosmic powers nor did he employ their names in his intercessiona practice more in keeping with occultic arts.71 In fact there is no indication that Daniel was aware of what was taking place in the heavenlies during his three week period of prayer and fasting. It is not until after this period that Daniel received revelation about the identity of the angels engaged in this heavenly struggle.72 And even then, the only angel who was named was Michael (10:13), who fought on behalf of Israel. The evil angelic princes of Persia and Greece were identified by their generic titles. In light of this, Lowe concludes, If this passage teaches the importance of names, it is angelic names which are consequential. Generic titles are sufficient for demons.73

What about corporate demonization over regions, nations, cities, ethnic groups, and generations of families? First, we must acknowledge that there is some biblical evidence for territorial spirits. Jesus called Satan the prince of this world (John 12:31) while Paul named him the prince of the power of the air (Eph. 2:2) and the god of this world (2 Cor. 4:4). He leads the whole world astray together with his angels (Rev. 12:9, NIV). []

Where teachers of these doctrines depart from Scripture more definitely is in the practice of trying to expel these spirits. The Bible does show Jesus and Paul verbally rebuking demons which physically possessed individuals. Each of these individuals was freed, and, like the Gadarene, was found to be in his right mind after the expulsion.

It is important to note, however, that neither Jesus nor the disciples ever verbally rebuked (or taught others to do so) national, ethnic, behavioral, or generational demons. The Bay Area demons have been thoroughly rebuked but the region is still not in its right mind, while materialism, immorality, and irreverence are common behavior.

Spiritual Endeavors Dan, you're probably best known to most people for your best selling books. Your first book, Way Of The Peaceful Warrior, has been read by millions of people, translated into 12 languages, and has a major feature film in development. But athletics was your first love. And it's obvious that it remains dear to your heart. You're doing a fund raiser here in Las Vegas for the World Acrobatics Society. Let's start there.

Dan Millman Okay. I'll be visiting with the World Acrobatics Society as they hold one of the major meets of the season, The Go For It Classic, at Cashman Field. I'll be speaking on Life Mastery And The Laws Of Spirit at one of the rooms there, from 2:30 till about 4 p.m. on Saturday, February 7th, followed by a book signing. Tickets are $ 22. I'll be there to raise funds for these talented kids.

Spiritual Endeavors You had a wonderful career teaching and coaching gymnastics at Stanford. You took a dormant program and in four years turned it around to produce world class and Olympic athletes. You put in all the hard work of changing it around, but didn't stay to reap the rewards, why?

Dan Millman I stopped coaching when I realized I was admiring the other team as much as my own athletes. I didn't care who won. I cared if everybody played a good game and did their best. In my view, no one looses, because whenever you play, you're learning something about yourself. I treated opposing athletes not as the enemy, but as potential teachers. So I decided it wasn't really appropriate for me anymore.

Spiritual Endeavors I understand that you used some unusual techniques at the time; fairly commonplace now, but unheard of back then.

Dan Millman Yes. Other coaches used to rib me because they considered me kind of a weirdo at the time. They'd say, "I heard rumors you have your athletes meditate before competition." And I'd say, "Of course not! I have them meditate during the competition."

Spiritual Endeavors From being an athlete and college coach, how did you get into writing books like Way Of The Peaceful Warrior, The Laws Of Spirit, and your other books?

Dan Millman I started my writing career with articles about natural principles of training for a gymnastics magazine. Later, these principles expanded to the broader arena of skill training, including other sports, such as dance, martial arts, and music. During this time, I wrote the book now titled The Inner Athlete (formerly "The Warrior Athlete), to convey how to become a natural athlete (or musician or anything else)--about the larger promise and potential of training. Having done that, the scope of my work expanded into the realm of daily life. I went on to write Way Of The Peaceful Warrior and the books that followed.

Spiritual Endeavors I realize that it's not as important as some people think, but for the record, is the character Socrates real or fictional?

Dan Millman The character of Socrates is based on a real old man I met in an old gas station on the corner of Oxford and Hearst Streets in Berkeley, California, about 3 A.M. one starry night.

Spiritual Endeavors And could he really jump up on rooftops etc..

Dan Millman No. Nor did he grab me by the head and "send" me on inner journeys, or make me forget about Joy for all those years, or "crush" my skull in a cave in the mountains. Socrates became the spokesperson for what I had learned from a number of teachers and influences in my life, both external and internal.

Spiritual Endeavors How much of that book is true?

Dan Millman Except for the items I've already noted, most of the book is factual. I did go to Berkeley. I was a world trampoline champion and gymnast. I did shatter my right femur in a motorcycle accident and recover to join my team and win the NCAA Gymnastics Championships. I did travel around the world studying various martial arts and spiritual traditions; I was married to Linda with whom I had a daughter, Holly. I did have an experience one might call "ego death" and powerful insights that continued to surface over the years.

Spiritual Endeavors As I said, I realize the non importance of the question, but some people will be very disappointed.

Dan Millman Some people are very disappointed to learn that it's not all factual, because they are so strongly hoping for "magic" in the world that contrasts with what appears to be a mundane existence. My intent is not to create illusions, but to point out the extraordinary event of daily life, right now. Let's keep our heads in the clouds, but our feet on the ground. Why be concerned about traveling "out of the body" before we've even gotten INTO it? Let's not get so fascinated by "near-death" experiences that we fail to notice that THIS moment is a near-death experience. Some of us who want to know all about past and future lives aren't yet paying attention to this one.

Spiritual Endeavors I understand. Here at Spiritual Endeavors we've had that lesson drawn to us also. Idealistically, we'd love to give everything away free. But that head in the clouds philosophy doesn't keep Spiritual Endeavors alive, to keep on benefiting others, unless the bills are paid. I would imagine that being the great success you are, you would have had to do a bit of soul searching in the "money and spiritual truths department". How did you work it out for yourself?

Dan Millman Some people have negative or unrealistic, idealistic views about money, especially when it comes to what they see as spiritual teachings or spiritual life. Images of the Indian sadhus, ascetics who own nothing but a loincloth, or the Buddhist monks with begging bowls, are archetypes in our psyche. Popular media laud the "poor but good-hearted people" and the "nasty, spoiled rich." Remember the film, "It's a Wonderful Life"? The term "rich person" has become an epithet. Money is neither my god nor my devil. It is a form of energy that tends to make us more of who we already are, whether it's greedy or loving. If one lives alone, one can live without much money; if one raises a family as I do, and wants the best schools and a comfortable life for them, then one needs to work. I make my living writing and lecturing. I charge a respectable fee and give all I can. This is how it works for me.

Spiritual Endeavors At Spiritual Endeavors we are understanding that more clearly with every passing day. Yet, let's play devils advocate for a moment. There are those people out there who would say, "Dan you have information others should know about. You should be giving it away, not selling it".

Dan Millman Anyone who disagrees is welcome to express their view. After all, if we all agree on everything, only one of us is necessary

Spiritual Endeavors Well put.

Dan Millman People are welcome to express agreement or disagreement, and to criticize me. No one is above criticism. I don't require people to believe me or even to trust me; I encourage them to trust themselves. It's important to test what we read or hear against our own life experience to see if it is realistic or valid.

Spiritual Endeavors And that is so important! That's probably the one thing we try to convey the strongest at Spiritual Endeavors. So many "New Agers" tend to gulp down the latest philosophy without even bothering to chew it over. The real spiritual knowledge is eternal and gained through the discernment of all ages. How do you feel about your books being considered New Age?

Dan Millman I really haven't the faintest idea what the "New Age" is. First of all, it's not really new; most of the shamanistic, positive-thinking, proto-Atlantean healing technologies, occult, extra-terrestrial, subliminal, affirmative this-and-that have ancient roots. Second, the "new age" differs from the warrior tradition in that the "new age" has no shadow; it is aggressively pacifistic, idealistic rather than realistic, hopeful to the point of denial. Anyway, now that I'm 50 years old, I've asked the bookstores to move my books out of the New Age section and put them in the "Middle Age" section.

Spiritual Endeavors Dan, this has been delightful. Perhaps I better ask you some questions for your readers. Some of your readers think that through your experiences with Socrates you've become enlightened. How do you respond?

Dan Millman We've all read about these idealized figures who have "reached the state of permanent enlightenment." I'm a little skeptical about that. If life is a series of moments, we each have enlightened moments, and moments of being asleep, ignorant. Sometimes I'm an illumined guy, and sometimes I act like a jackass. I do have more good moments than in the past. Someone who observed my life would find it pretty compassionate, balanced, committed, responsible, functional, altruistic, and at other moments less so. That seems more realistic than talk about enlightenment, as fascinating as that may be. Enlightenment, to me, is less like turning on a light switch; more like gradually turning up a dimmer switch. In a sense, we're all becoming more "enlightened" over time--that is, if we're paying attention to the bigger picture.

Spiritual Endeavors Do you believe in God?

Dan Millman One of my favorite sayings is this: "There's God; and then there's not paying attention." To me this has nothing to do with saying I believe or don't believe something. Anyone who has looked into the depths of the ocean or up at a starry sky or really looked at a flower or a tree or anything else is also somehow gazing into the heart of God. At least it seems that way to me. But if you mean do I agree with or state my allegiance to one or another holy book, well--yes and no. A mountain path is my church; so are the city streets. Church is everywhere because Spirit is everywhere.

Spiritual Endeavors Spirit is everywhere. And in many ways it could be compared cyber space. You maintain your own web domain. Are you finding the Internet a useful tool for reaching the Personal Development audience?

Dan Millman I have an almost religious zeal--not for technology per se, but for the Internet which is for me, the nervous system of mother Earth, which I see as a living creature, linking up. In fact, the only way to get information about me and my work, currently other than what's written in my books, is to check my web site. I encourage all my friends to get online. Saves paper, increases interconnection and communication. To me we are in the midst of a quantum evolutionary leap and it's impossible to predict what it will mean.

Spiritual Endeavors And now there's another site, http://www.destinykeys.com, which aids people in discovering their life purpose. How did that come into being?

Dan Millman I was approached by a very bright group of people who were so taken by the material in my book, The Life You Were Born to Live, and had the Internet expertise to do it right, that I agreed to put the life purpose system online for those people who would like to receive the information through this growing medium. So far, the Life-Purpose Workbook orders are modest, but I know it will grow and serve a valuable purpose.

Spiritual Endeavors At that site people are actually able to get a free preview life purpose reading according to your system. I was there a few days ago. I submitted my birth date, and I was impressed. Helping people discover their life purpose is right down our alley. What do you say we put a link in the Spiritual Endeavors FreeStuff pavilion?

Dan Millman Sure! That's why I'm still writing. When I have nothing else to add, I'll stop. Let me close with this: Some people have called with one or another problem--maybe it's a relationship issue, or health or finances or a difficult decision. I end up saying the same thing: Trust the process of your life. As the title of one of my books, The Life You Were Born To Live, indicates, our lives may be predestined in some sense; yet we also have the free will to make choices which shape our lives. There may be no ultimate right or wrong, but there are consequences. Responsibility means recognizing the consequences of our actions for ourselves and others. Faith is the courage to live and act as if we "can't make the wrong decision." In other words, we make our choices and live as if it were the best possible choices. A path we choose may turn out to be difficult, but that doesn't mean it was the wrong choice. Let's treat difficulties as forms of spiritual weightlifting. All we can do in this life is to handle what's in front of us, accept ourselves and others as we are. We can be gentle with ourselves, and compassionate, and at the same time, call forth the best within us. There's the paradox; there's the humor; there's the path of daily life, the way of the peaceful warrior.

In the spring of 1977, Michael was introduced to the writings of Rudolf Steiner. Within weeks he launched upon an ever-expanding path of exploration and discovery.
