Sales excellence and the comfort zone freeze

Sales reps and their comfort zones

Sometimes great short-term sales success can be a bad predictive of future sales excellence. Lets look at why that might be and examine the consequences.

There are a number of market and company-specific reasons why this dilemma tends to materialize at various times. In most cases when these factors are the source of the problem, sales reps have very limited ability to manage and correct the problem. However, there is an alternative source of the problem that is directly related to sales repsand is one they can manage and correct. Its all about the comfort zone freeze.

Some sales reps achieve success and avoid failure by sticking to the tried and true. They stay in their comfort zone. They dont, for example, sell the innovative solution because it requires work to get smart about the particulars or because it is risky due to potential hiccups in implementation that cant immediately be solved.

Another permutation of the comfort zone freeze is the sales rep that assumes a cautious attitude simply because its safer from a financial perspective Id rather have less of a commission on a sure thing vs. going for a big hit and losing it all.

Whats wrong with tried and true or a cautious attitude? Isnt there a lot to be said for the old axiom better safe than sorry? But Sales in 2016 is going to be about disruption which has implications for staying within ones comfort zone. Lets look at two specifics:

What are the consequences? Some will say there are none because this characterization of the future as world of constant change is a story heard many times before that has never produced the projected dire results. Possible but the suggested market disruptions look like the real deal. So if they are, what are the likely consequences of staying within comfort zones?

Today, buyers are changing the expectations they have about the people on the other side of the table. They want sales reps who are trusted advisors not product facilitators. The rep or company that adopts the lets just stay the course approach is likely to continuously erode their competitive advantage. Tried and trueand cautious attitude are likely to reemerge as sorry and sad.

What or who inspired you to start your own business?

I have been in sales since I was 10 years old. I think I was the first person to say, "You want fries with that?"

Describe your most memorable project.

I was hired by a company where the CEO was doing most of the selling. In order to grow, he needed to onboard sales people. I wrote a sales playbook for his company and interviewed sales candidates. He hired one. They worked through the sales playbook and the new rep is now closing deals. Because he has a repeatable process via the Sales Playbook, future hires will be more productive and more quick.

2016 Filing Season Updates

Identity theft and refund fraud continue to be on the rise. We are taking important steps to help detect and prevent refund fraud. The Vermont Tax Department has partnered with theIRSother state tax agencies, and companies and trade association in the tax and financial services industries to establish stronger security measures, particularly in filing online, including validation of identity and return information at the time of filing.

Taxpayers should be aware that the department is implementing new measures to combat personal income tax fraud for the 2016 tax filing season, and that they may experience delays in receiving their refunds. The department may hold some returns until it receives W-2 withholding reports from employers, which are not due until Feb. 29. Heres how The Vermont Department of Taxes is pleased to announce that myVTax, a new online filing site, is now available for Business Taxpayers to file their Sales & Use, Meals & Rooms and Withholding tax returns. VTBizFile is no longer available to file returns.

Having trouble creating a myVTax account? You can file and pay your monthly business taxes without creating a login. Simply click on File A Return under the Businesses tab on the myVTax home page.

Business taxpayers are now able to pay Sales & Use, Meals & Rooms and Withholding tax bills on myVTax. VTPay is available for taxpayers to pay Personal Income Tax bills and Personal Income Tax estimates.

Our business tax examiners are available to answer your questions about myVTax Monday through Friday from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. You can also email the VTax support section at tax.myVTax@vermont.gov or call us at 802-828-6802 or 802-828-2551.
