Two Door Cinema Club caps off Movin’ On annual Penn State music festival – The Daily Collegian Online

The annual Movin' On festival kicked off on the Blue Band field as students were able to enjoy a night of music before the start of finals week.

The festival featured performances from Zach Wade & The Good Grief, Love and Theft, Clean Bandit, D.R.A.M., All Time Low and Two Door Cinema Club.

Two Door Cinema Club caps off Movin' On with mix of old, new songs

As the stage lights began to flash at 9:30 p.m., "Two Door Cinema Club" did not start to play. Instead, proving they know how to fire up a State College crowd, the music for Penn States famous Seven Nation Army chant played for a moment instead, as concert-goers rushed from all over the lawn toward the stage.

The headliner began to play as the crowd cheered, hula hoops twirled and the music echoed through the Blue Band Field.

The band moved on to one of its more popular songs, Undercover Martyn, before briefly welcoming the crowd, saying, We're Two Door Cinema Club. Nice to see you.

They're great," Nicole Cramer (sophomore-hospitality) said of "Two Door Cinema Club." I think everyone is really excited, especially because theyre the main band playing.

"Two Door Cinema Club" is an indie rock band with a techno sound, which was reflected in the varying flashes of color that lit up the tall panels behind the band on stage, starting with a flashing neon blue and changing pace to match each song as they shone onto the dancing crowd.

Although "Two Door Cinema Club" was the last band to play Movin On, and a slight drizzle began in the middle of the set, the crowd remained especially enthusiastic as the band announced, We're going to play an old song for you now, proceeding to play, Something Good Can Work.

While the band was not as interactive with the audience as "All Time Low" had been, "Two Door Cinema Club" kept the crowd enraptured with a mix of old and new.

It's a really great time with a lot of great people," audience member Emma Christen (biology) said, "and a great way to end sophomore year."

All Time Low brings nostalgia to Movin' On

Just before 8 p.m., "All Time Low" fans patiently waited for their band to arrive on stage. Casually backstage, members hold red solo cups relaxing as the stage crew is setting up.

The crowd recently descends after the performance from "D.R.A.M" artist of the hit song "Broccoli." The people gathered are shoulder to shoulder basically breathing down each other's necks. Big groups of edger people trying to make their way to the front of the stage looks like a bunch of monkeys in a barrel connected by the arms.

Tiana Perez (Freshmen- Public Relations), never listened to "All Time Low" a day in her life but after the concert, she plans on exploring their music.

"All Time Low," started there set-list with the famous "Weightless" and the crowd is sang along to every word.

Their second song "Lost In Stereo" automatically made phone cameras sky rocket up in the air, as well as the rock sign.

The band spotted a person in a dinosaur concert and demanded that he was brought up on stage. Unfortunately, he didn't make it.

Their new album is coming out soon, so to honor that they performed their new song, a never before played in America, "Last Young Renegade." The crowd responded positively. Some already knew the lyrics.

Jack Barakat mentioned that he partied at Penn State before.

They ended the night with their also classic "Dear Maria Count Me In."

The band gave the same energy that the crowd did.

D.R.A.M takes center stage at Movin' On

Performing his top hits, including "Broccoli" and "Cash Machine," D.R.A.M. drew in the crowd, as everyone pushed to stage.

The crowd jumped and fist bumped to hits like "Molly Percocet," a song D.R.A.M. covered.

"I wasn't expecting a lot from him," RJ Rawa (sophomore-psychology) said. "But when he came on it was better than I though and I really enjoyed his set."

D.R.A.M. kept the audience waiting, keeping his top hits until the end of his set, where the entire crowd erupted into "Broccoli" kareoke and danced when "Cash Machine" was performed.

All Time Low and Two Door Cienma Club are set to take the stage next at the festival.

Clean Bandit makes first trip to Penn State

Clean Bandit continued the Movin On lineup with a set of songs to get the crowd off its feet.

The band is made up of a British trio and formed in Cambridge in 2008. The group consists of brothers Jake and Luke Patterson, along with Grace Chatto. Clean Bandit also brought two other singers and a violinist with them at Movin On.

Clean Bandit is best known for its 2014 hit, Rather Be, but the group saved that hit for last and gradually warmed up the crowd with a few lesser-known gems and a new single.

The band started off the set with the empowering, Stronger, moving into a performance of their new single, Symphony, which features Swedish singer Zara Larsson on their 2017 album So Good.

Jessie Reynolds (freshman-education) said that she enjoys that Clean Bandits music offers her the opportunity to dance.

"Their music is really really fun and upbeat, I feel like its the kind of music thats fun for a concert when theres not really down time and youre always dancing.

Clean Bandits songs have a unique, mixed sound, due to the combination of modern electronic instruments and the more traditional, classical sound of the violin, as the Patterson brothers are gifted in the electronic pop style, while Chatto is a classically trained musician.

Jacklyn Kirchner (freshman-psychology) said that she the strong bass beat that reverberates throughout most of Clean Bandits repertoire.

Im a really big fan of house music, Kirchner said. And when the bass is really going, you can feel it in your chest.

Though Clean Bandit has previously performed in the States, Chatto said to the crowd that their set at Movin On marked their first visit to this area of the country. Judging from the roar of the crowd that erupted at the beginning of each of their songs this evening, they seem to have made a lasting impression on Pennsylvania.

Country band Love and Theft continues to energize Movin' On crowd

Capitalizing on the energy of Zach Wade & the Good Grief, country band Love and Theft took the stage just 15 minutes later.

Although initially trying to continue the more relaxed atmosphere the previous band left with songs like "Candyland," and its new album song "Love Wins," the band used songs like "Runaway" to inject energy into the crowd.

The band even covered Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues" in which vocalists Stephen Barker Liles and Eric Gunderson introduced members of the band which had people even doing the Cotton-Eye Joe dance in the field in front of the stage at one point.

"I think it's pretty cool they brought country to Penn State," Lauren Ebel (sophomore-agriculture science) said. "They usually play hipster, rock and it's cool they brought some pop country."

After congratulating the seniors on reaching graduation, as both Liles and Gunderson admitted they were college dropouts and "did things they shouldn't have" while they attended school, the band transitioned appropriately into "Night That You'll Never Forget."

After the final songs in their 45-minute set, which also included a cover of "Free Fallin'" by Tom Petty, their song dedicated to addiction called "Whiskey on My Breath," and their final song "Angel Eyes" that pulled people to their feet, Love and Theft left stage to thunderous applause.

"I haven't seen them live anywhere else, but I love their music," Julia Mauro (senior - nursing) said, adding Love and Theft was a good second act. "They sang a good set. They sang most of the songs I expected them to sing. I was happy to see more country artists here."

Zach Wade and the Good Grief hypes up crowd in opening act

Zach Wade and the Good Grief, which beat out several other bands in the audition process, wrapped up their opening Movin' On set in 30 minutes on Friday afternoon.

The Altoona-based group opened up with "Halfway Man," which had a rock-vibe feel to it before transitioning into "The Bitter End."

With an energetic tempo and folk, pop and rock style, the band continued to hype up the crowd.

The group also performed styles reminiscent of bands like the Goo Goo Dolls and other early-2000s bands. The group also performed "Something Happened," which was dedicated to the musicians' friend, Brent Kling, who died in December.

Wade and his band expertly blended rock, pop and country into their songs and created a vibe so relaxing it continued to draw smiles, head bobs and applause from the initial crowd.

Sleep and our sleeping related habits are once again being subjected to great scrutiny in the media, with many statistics being presented highlighting how important quality sleep is, and how few of us seem to be getting it. We've been told that 90% adults say they don't get enough sleep, 25% struggle with Sunday night insomnia and that sleep-related issues cost UK businesses 40 billion pounds each year, the equivalent of 200,000 lost work days, due to absenteeism, accidents and poor performance.

With this in mind we need to focus on ensuring that we support our own great bedtime routine. Here are some tips;

- Consistency is often an important contributor to a good sleep routine, where you have a designated time to switch off from work, eat healthily and aim to go to bed and get up at the same time. Training your mind and body as when to wind down is the key to supporting an effective sleep pattern.

- Be proactive in dealing with each day's stresses. Ask yourself if you've done all you reasonably can to address a particular area of concern, then aim to let it go until further input from you is required. Being disciplined is important in order to calm your 'fight or flight' approach to stress. Commit to good daytime habits and take regular breaks throughout the day, stopping for lunch and aiming to get some fresh air and exercise; all ways to support a positive approach to work/life balance and good sleep.

- Spend quality time with family and friends as well as scheduling some 'me time' for the things that are important to you. This may require you becoming more assertive and saying 'no' to some of the demands made upon you, but taking good care of yourself means being clear about how much of your time you're prepared to compromise.

- Many people need to maximise their use of space, especially when they work from home. If you've set up an office in your bedroom be sure to screen it off at the end of each working day. Ensure that your bedroom is a calm haven, the place where you close the door at bedtime and relax. Try to keep it free from clutter and an excess of technology, as its presence can be a distraction.

- Be firm about technology. Aim to turn off your phone and gadgets two hours before you go to bed, so avoiding the temptation to check in 'just one more time'. Have set times for checking emails and social media so that you become more focused and time efficient. Then allow yourself time before bed to calm and still your mind. Keep your phone away from the bed as its blue light has been found to affect sleep quality.

- Also, if you work from home or spend a lot of your time there have a cut off time when you turn everything off and introduce a routine that signifies the end of the busy part of your day. Turn your phone to answerphone, close your office door, go for a walk and change out of your daytime clothes - all ways to draw a line under your working day.

- Save any meaningful/important/stressful conversations for a more appropriate time. Last thing at night or when one person is busy, distracted or over-tired will serve neither of you well and can play on your mind when you should be preparing to sleep. Both agree when to have the discussion and ensure that it then happens. That way you can confidently 'park up' your issues, safe in the knowledge that you won't forget to raise the matter at a better time.

- Do you come home after work feeling mentally tired and jaded but physically under-exerted? Many people have work that requires either mental or physical effort, so that they end up tired in one area but not the other. Try to find some balance by exercising mentally, with quizzes and crosswords, or by walking, swimming and physical activity, so that you're better able to fall asleep. Otherwise you may be restless and unable to relax.

- Prepare for the day ahead so that there's no need to clutter your mind with concerns or worries about the coming day. Put your clothes out the night before or adopt a uniform outfit or colour. Use lists to avoid the stress or fear of forgetting something. Being organised can help you feel more in control and better able to sleep.

- A relaxing bath or shower pre-bed is a good way to symbolically wash away the days stresses and strains and prepare for bed. Some people like to read, enjoy a hot, milky drink, meditate, listen to relaxing music or practice some yoga.

Being committed to a positive bedtime routine can be a great investment and an important way to support a good night's sleep.

Thalia Heffernan opens up on dealing with anxiety – Goss.ie

Thalia Heffernan has opened up on how shedeals with anxiety.

The model revealed that she used to suffer badly in the past, but she has managed to overcome it in some ways.

When asked whether anxiety was an issue, she said, "Yeah, heavily in the past. But I've kind of gotten much better recently.

"I think it's just age for me. I've grown up, and I've started to learn how to process and deal with it."

The gorgeous Dubliner continued, "When I was younger and I first started working full time, I was a ball of anxiety. So stressed all the time.

"Winding down is really important as well. Making sure you give yourself time in the evenings, or even in the middle of the day - just turn your phone off."

She also touched on the subject of social media and the social pressures that come along with it on Breakfast Republic on 2FM.

"I think I feel pressure because it does help with my work, and it gets me jobs and it helps my career. But then I do have to realise that my job is only my job and it's not my life."

The Dancing With The Stars celeb strongly believes that the public need to realise how false social media really is.

"The world has evolved to be this social media multi-million dollar industry, that is so false and so intangible. People don't realise just how false it really is.

"Detox is really important, and just being really aware. Looking at these pictures of these beautiful people, and these lavish lifestyles and you just have to realise that it isn't - like they took about 55 photos to get that."

She also revealed that she uses guided meditation to get to sleep every night, which is usually relaxing music paired with a person's voice guiding you through it.

Annual festival returns to Marvin’s Mountaintop – Daily Athenaeum

Only 15 minutes from Morgantown, Marvins Mountaintop and the Cheat River Canyon will serve as a backdrop for the Deep Roots Mountain Revival festival.

The second annual Deep Roots Mountain Revival festival will take place July 20-22 at Marvins Mountaintop in Masontown, W. Va.

The family-friendly music festival involves outdoor activities for children as well as three days of camping, dancing and relaxing with friends. Patrons can expect music within Americana, Bluegrass, Rock and Jam genres with regional visual artists and craft vendors.

Headliners for this year include Brandi Carlile, Dr. Dog, Lettuce, JJ Grey & Mofro, Moon Taxi, Sam Bush, Yonder Mountain String Band, The Motet and more.

Deep Roots Mountain Revival is something that every student, or resident, of Morgantown and the surrounding area can enjoy, said Claude Ryan, the festivals founder. We have a little bit of something for everyone. We are an extremely family-friendly event with a weekend calendar full of kids activities, adult activities, incredible live music and awesome food and beverage options.

In 2011, festival founder Claude Ryan joined with Clayton Koontz, the founder of Active Air Productions. Together, they shared a similar dream of creating their own music festival, which was brought to life in 2016 due to their separate ties with Marvins Mountaintop.

The biggest changes for 2017 would probably be a change in the stage layout, more kids activities, an updated walking path through the woods to the Roots Stage, an Artist Village, updates to the Family & ADA Camping Area, better site transportation and RV Electrical Hookups in GA Parking, Ryan said. Every year that we survive, we want to make minor changes to the event to enhance the experience for the attendees that support us.

According to Ryan, there were approximately 1,400 attendees at last years event. The goal is to increase that number by a minimum of 3,500 for this year. Ticket sales will be capped at 12,000.

We want to the event to remain relatively small so we can keep the experience more personal for those that attend, added Ryan, a lifelong West Virginia resident.

To sleep, perchance to dream – The Irish Catholic

For many of us, getting enough sleep can be a luxury or, perhaps like me, youre a parent of a young child and a full eight hours sleep is a distant memory, or there just doesn't seem to be enough hours in the day. For many sleep is a precious part of our day that we never have enough of. Sleep plays a crucial role in our energy levels and health, yet it can often come low down on our list of priorities.

We need to make sure we are getting quality sleep when we can, that we can fall asleep quickly and stay asleep and, if we manage to find time, grab a nap when we need to. The quality of sleep is just as important as the quantity, and if you are sleep-deprived trying to catch up is very important. The amount of sleep you need depends on your age, a two-year-old needs around 12 hours a night whilst adults need 7-9 hours.

If you find it hard to fall asleep, or indeed to stay asleep, you are not alone, with some polls indicating that up to 45% of people have an issue with poor sleep. If restless nights are the norm for you, the first thing to do is start observing your sleep patterns, taking a note of how much sleep you are getting each night and how you feel the next day. Then think about the factors that contribute to your sleep or lack of it. Are you watching TV just before going to bed, checking your work emails or your phone? What things can you change?

When it's coming up to bed time start to minimise light and sound. Darker rooms encourage your brain to release melatonin, which can have a calming effect. Bright lights, on the other hand, trick your brain into thinking it is still daytime. This includes the light from your television, computer or mobile phone. Using any of these before bedtime will make it harder for you to fall asleep. In fact, you should avoid watching TV or using any electronic devices in your bed all together no matter what time of the day it is. Your brain needs to associate your bed with sleep. Also the blue light that these devices give off stops the production of that valuable melatonin which helps you to feel sleepy.

During the day, it is important to get as much natural light as possible. Perhaps you can have your morning coffee outside, get off the bus a stop early or go for a walk at lunch time. Try to let as much natural light as possible into your home or workspace.

We will spend around a third of our lives sleeping. So the place you sleep is important. Invest in a good comfortable mattress. Make sure your bedroom is at a comfortable temperature and that it is a place which you associate with rest not work.

Routine is something we probably associate with children, but adults need one too; when you have a bedtime routine it helps to prepare your body and brain for rest. Figure out what helps you to wind down, it could be enjoying a hot shower or a cup of camomile tea or listening to relaxing music. How you handle day-to-day stress will play a significant part in your ability to fall asleep. Of course stress is inevitable, but its when that stress turns to anxiety you need to address it. If you are struggling to manage stress or anxiety it is important to seek professional help, either with one-to-one counselling or you might benefit from participating in the life skills programme run by AWARE.

Meditative prayer before bedtime can really help you switch off and relax. Perhaps you can set up a prayer space, dim the lights, play some instrumental music and take even 10 minutes to sit quietly in prayer reflecting on your day.

People who exercise regularly sleep better and have more energy during the day. Regular exercise will help you fall asleep and also will increase the amount of time you spend in restorative deep sleep. The more vigorously you exercise during the day the better you will sleep, but even light exercise like a short walk will help. However, make sure not to do moderate to hard workouts close to bed time. If youre starting exercise, remember it will take time before you experience the full sleep inducing effects so pick habits that you can stick to.

Think about what you eat and drink. Avoid heavy meals, especially rich or spicy ones, too close to bed time. Going to bed with indigestion or heartburn certainly wont aid a restful sleep. It might be tempting to gulp down another cup of coffee to give you what you need to make it through the day, but overdoing caffeine can mask your need for sleep and prevent you from getting to sleep when you lie down. Remember tea also contains caffeine (around half the amount of a cup of coffee) as do other infusions and fizzy drinks, so cut caffeine out after 3pm.

If you have young children, when your little one is taking a 30-minute nap, you might feel you won't fall asleep and you busy yourself with chores in the house. Take this time to rest, lie down and relax in your bed or on the couch, stay off your phone and switch off the television, this, in itself, can be very restorative. I know this advice is easier said than done, but just remember if you burn out from lack of rest you won't be much good to your children.

Technology can also assist with lots of apps claiming they can help you sleep better:

Sleepiouses scientific techniques with years of research behind it, analysing your lifestyle, mind and your timetable to help you to sleep better.

Sleep Geniusaims to help you train yourself to fall asleep. The creators originally were helping astronauts to fall asleep in space and are experts in neuroscience, sleep and music.

Pzizzis designed to help you fight insomnia and take power naps during the day. The app generates new sounds each time you use it, so your mind cant get used to the same overplayed sounds.

You may have heard of white noise being used to help calm crying infants, you might even have an app that plays a hairdryer sound on your phone.

But for an adult's perfect sleep inducing lullaby there is pink noise (more low-frequency than white noise). A recent study, published in the journal Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, observed adults who were made listen to pink noise as they slept.

The next day they reported feeling more rested than usual. Apparently, listening to this type of pink noise can increase "slow wave activity" helping you sleep better and increase your memory retention. The good news is you can get hours of pink noise for free on YouTube.

There are some habits that are important to break. Pressing the snooze button on your alarm clock a few times in the morning kicks off a new sleep cycle, which you won't be able to finish, leaving you feeling less rested.

If you're a smoker and need another reason to kick the habit, similar to caffeine, remember nicotine is a stimulant. Therefore, if you smoke you are four times more likely to report poor sleep compared to non-smokers. Smoking also changes your internal body clock, and it is estimated that every cigarette smoked leads to a loss of 1.2 minutes sleep each night.

Something we certainly don't get enough of in Ireland is sun! One of the best things you can do to get more sleep is get more sunlight; exposure to natural light, especially first thing in the morning, helps to wake you up and makes you more sleepy at night.

So getting fit, healthy and relaxing more - if that isn't enough of an incentive in order to sleep better, it might help to know that according to a new UK study of 30,000 people across four years, getting better sleep can be as beneficial as winning 230,000 in the lottery!

John Legend Coming To Clearwater’s Beautiful Coachman Park – The Sarasota Post (blog)

Under the stars on Friday night at Coachman Park, musical artist Kenny G played his iconic saxophone to several thousand fans. Opening the show standing in the middle of the crowd, his sweet music soothed and enchanted. Moving to the stage, accompanied by a great band, Kenny gave each musician a chance to shine individually performing solos with tunes like Santana's "Smooth". A great relaxing evening of music.

Opening for Kenny was famous Hawaiian ukulele player Jake Shimabukuro. Jake told stories to the crowd of his experiences in Hawaii. Jake's mad skills on this instrument are beyond amazing. His version of The Beatles "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is great. You can find it on YouTube.

After entertaining in Clearwater, Kenny is making news and going viral! On his flight leaving Tampa. Kenny played for passengers to raise money for "Relay For Life" for the American Cancer Society. The passengers raised $2,000!

May's concert at Coachman will bring the incomparable Grammy winner John Legend's "Darkness and Light" tour. Legend is one of today's top musicians. His current duet with pop star Ariana Grande from the film "Beauty and the Beast" is topping the charts. He has a role in 2016's hit musical film "La La Land". He won an Oscar for best original song for "Glory" in 2015. Mr. Legend comes to Clearwater for the 2nd show of the tour on Saturday, May 13th!

June 10th will bring some rock to the Coachman with San Francisco's Third Eye Blind's "Summer Gods" tour! Opening will be Silversun. Third Eye is celebrating 20 years! A great live band, don't miss it! These shows are all a part of the Ruth Eckerd Hall's "On the Road" series and tickets can be purchased at http://www.rutheckerdhall.com

There is BIG plans coming for Coachman Park with the building of an outdoor "boutique" amphitheater. A smaller version which would seat more than Ruth Eckerd Hall but less than Mid-Florida Credit Union Amphitheater in Tampa. 5,000 people compared to 20,000 with an artist playing several nights of shows. People are looking for a more intimate experience that you just can't get in the large venues unless you have a front row seat. Coachman with its incredible scenic backdrop, this will be a welcome addition to Tampa Bay music scene!

What could be better than a comfortable, peaceful sanctuary for mom on Mothers Day? You guessed itthis sanctuary is your session room.

Your session room has to be a place your clients lovea place where clients can simply think about and feel relaxed before they even arrive.

With a little bit of creativity, intuition and a small expenditure, you can design a sanctuary-like session room moms will adore, thereby taking their session experiences beyond the ordinary.

Here, massage industry expertsJean Shea, Rodella Shastro, Jordan Mariah Reed, Brad Pressman and Shoona Cookexplain how the scents, sounds and sensations of your session room add up to a blissful experience on Mothers Day.

While looking for a quiet location, make sure the office location is also odor-free. This means that it will not smell like cooking, painting or anything else that might be offensive to your clients.

Burning an aromatherapy candle creates a pleasant scentbut aromatherapy scents mixed with food smells are unpleasant to many people. Try to eat your meals well before your clients appointment and far away from your therapy room if possible.

When burned on their own though aromatherapy candles can help create a healing environment.

An aromatherapy scented candle can disperse a soothing, uplifting or rejuvenating aroma, depending on which type of pure essential oil is used, explains Jean Shea, CEO and founder of BIOTONE.

Burning lavender-scented candles, for instance, can have a relaxing effect, whereas a mandarin aromatherapy candle can help create a calming environment and relieve anxiety.Aromatherapy candles with citrus oils can be used to improve concentration.

Furthermore, never underestimate the importance of providing clients with an opportunity to take the great experience home, Shea adds.

Every time they light the candle, she says, whether it was chosen primarily for the therapeutic effect or for the experience, they will be transported back to your treatment room.

Aromatherapy can be added to a session room in a variety of ways such as through a diffuser, candle or aroma stick to name a few examples. .

Aromatherapy diffusers come in all forms.You can also use cotton balls, tissue or cosmetic pads scented with essential oils to put under pillows, sheets or near the client. This is a more passive method of diffusing because there is not a fan or electrical device used to disperse the essential oils.

A step far above this is a mechanical diffuser. A diffuser might be fan-generated, which can cover either small or larger spaces. Higher-end diffusers would be ultrasonic nebulizers. They work by emitting very fine particles of water and oil into the air and usually cover a large area.

Scents are found in massage products as well, such as creams used for facial massage, and specialty oils. Be sure to ask your clients if they are allergic to any essential oils or other ingredients and offer a sample scent before beginning the session.

First, you need to find a location as quiet as possible. Sometimes, depending on your office location, noise can be difficultbut not impossibleto control.

Insulating windows and doors helps a lot. A draft guard across the bottom edge of the door works wonders to cut down on noise. You can also use a combination of air cleaners with fans for white noise, a window-mounted air conditioner in the summer or a space heater with a fan in winter. A large water fountain also masks noise and is soothing. Of course, playing gentle music on a CD or iPod player creates comforting sounds.

Music that carries qualities of relaxation, peacefulness, meditation and silence can be of great contribution to any healing modality, says Rodella Shastro, president of Malimba Records.

According to music expert Jordan Mariah Reed, the right music should help the client feel not only relaxed but also comfortable so he enters a receiving state.

You can also have the client choose her own tunes for the session, suggests Brad Pressman, president of Water Music.

The wrong music during a massage or facial can be detrimental to the therapist-client relationship and could lead to a one-hit wonder with the guest never to return, he says. Whatever style is chosen, music will either enhance or detract from the overall guest experienceand it is inherently plausible to have the guest choose their preferred style or even bring their own mix to the treatment room.

To add a warm feel and help muffle sound in the room, your floor should be carpeted wall to wall or covered with a thick rug.

By using all of these techniques, my clients say they cant hear any noise encroaching from outside my session room despite the fact cars are driving by, dogs sometimes bark and other people are moving around in my building.

The lighting you choose is also very important. It is useful to have a variety of mood lighting, so you can use bright light while clients change and dim light as you work.

You need enough light to see your client as you work, but the light should be low enough to allow them to relax. A soft, three-way lamp, electric candles or string lights will all help create a relaxing atmosphere.

Lighting trends include battery-operated candles, which means you can put mood lighting almost anywhere safely.

In addition to buying a sturdy, well-made table that will last as many years as you need it, you might want to invest in a hydraulic-lift table. Each client you see has a different body size and requires a different working table height, and a hydraulic table can contribute to your career longevity. A headrest that adjusts in several directions helps provide the most effective session.

Cover the headrest and massage table with lambs wool, then add a memory-foam pad on top. Next add a table-warming pad. (Your clients will love you for it, so dont skip it.) This pad should be used year-round as it warms the muscles and relaxes the body. Use flannel sheets in the winter for warmth and jersey-knit sheets in the summer.

Your tables linens represent one of the most intimate impressions left on clients. Your client might, upon entering a treatment room, respond to the sight, smell and touch of the linen and blankets.

Wrinkled and worn sheets will evoke images of unsanitary and used linen. This certainly is not the first impression you want. Drape your client in luxurious, soft, clean linens that convey professionalism, luxury and an environment of health and well-being.

Another nice touch is to provide two mirrors: a small one to check makeup and hair, and a full-length size to check clothing. Another necessity is a lubricant warmer, which keeps oil or lotion continuously warm for the entire session.

I provide clients a comfortable chair to sit in when writing out checks to me, and next to this chair, I have a small table for clients to put glasses and personal items on. I keep a carafe of water, paper cups and tissues there as well.

Hang a few relaxing photos and paintings, along with your massage certificates, but make sure not to create a cluttered feel. Hang curtains on your windows for a softening effect. Professionally produced posters that communicate the benefits of massage therapy will also augment your session-room environment.

By adding attractive posters, you create inviting, relaxing surroundingsa tranquil sanctuary, explains Shoona Cook, R.M.T., creative director and owner of Fingerprintz, which sells massage posters and other products. When a client enters your beautiful space and feels welcomed and comfortable, you have enhanced the entire massage experience.

Clients make a powerful connection between massage and health and well-being when they see poster images and messages about massage, Cook continues. By reinforcing the message that regular massage is an important proactive part of their health care, you have empowered clients by the experience.

I have also covered my session-room ceiling with shear, billowing blue cloth for a cozy, cloud-like feel. This softens the feel of the room and adds another relaxing element.

A small wind chime hanging on the therapy-room door allows you to gently ring the chime to wake any client who may have fallen asleep. It acts as a quiet alarm, waking clients easily rather than jarring them from their relaxed state.

Once you have your therapy room furnished and decorated, dont make any drastic changes. Remember, your clients are thinking about your roomvisualizing the way it looks and how they feel being therelong before their scheduled appointment time.

On Mothers Day, if clients walk into a room that doesnt match their vision, it may shock them out of that relaxed state.

As creative massage therapists, you will come up with some terrific ideas to add on your own. Anything you can do to make your clients as relaxed and happy as possible will keep them coming back.

Your clients wont mind paying a little extra when you have provided a beautiful, stress-free haven for them to visit after a difficult day. The extra time and expenditure it takes is not only well worth it, but it will pay you back again and againand with a great first impression, youll convert your Mothers Day clients into regular customers.
