24-02-2012 02:19 Is 40 hours a week enough to truly be successful? Hi guys so I'm here with a simple question. The question is is 40 hours per week enough work to be truly successful in your life? I personally don't think it is. I know a lot of people may feel like they aren't getting anywhere in their lives and I am here to say that I believe maybe they are actually underworked not overworked and maybe they feel stagnant like they aren't getting anywhere. When I look back on my own life, my job, my education, and career I quickly see that I got to where I am now because I put in the extra time. Working just full time wasn't enough. Working full time really is just the bear minimum to get by and something we all need to do. Is 40 hours week enough to truly be successful in your life is full time go back school family healthy overwork how deal with depression maybe you are not doing accomplish goals and dreams at job career train retrain start business on the side After Work Before Training Success Update Employment Day motivation speaking coach personal strive ambition

Is Sergio Martinez lacking that key to success?

by Paul Strauss: Its a hard argument to make. First of all, most of the credible boxing people rank him number three or four on the P4P list. He is recognized as the true lineal middle weight champion. Doesnt that mean he is a success? Well, as they say, everything is relative, and in his case what has been withheld from him is the big money fights, and the chance to be part of the big show. Why? Is it something he has done or not done that has kept him just short of being a mega star? Is he flawed or somehow unworthy?

Take a moment and have a little fun creating an ideal prize fighter. Now, you shouldnt limit him to just your own likes. Expand things and create someone who you know will reflect the proper image and have wide ranging appeal. A comic book hero if you like. Remember, were talking ideal now. Try this on for size. This person should be handsome, yet rugged, someone who will appeal to female enthusiasts. He should be David like in build and athletic ability. He should have incredible boxing skills, both offensively and defensively, as well as being very tough. He should be very fast, yet graceful and fluid. He should be intelligent and well spoken. He should also conduct himself with proper deportment, and avoid any hint of scandal. He should be willing to fight all comers. He should be gracious in victory and never complain when misfortune might occur..

Do you know anybody like that? Some of our most recent mega stars of the ring include names like Manny Pacquaio, Floyd Mayweather, Jr., Oscar De La Hoya, Roy Jones, Jr., Mike Tyson, and Sugar Ray Leonard. Do their attributes match up with our ideal? Not really. Theyre all flawed, but in each case they were so strong in some areas that they overcame weaknesses in other areas. And, the key is they had help. The best example is Tyson. Everyone knows about his fall from the championship throne. But, when he was in his prime, coming up the ladder, he was one of the most exciting fighters of all time because of his tremendous knockout power. . People knew he was going to destroy his opponents, but they still wanted to see it happened. It was like a perverted attraction to see an accident.

All those named made it to the big show multiple times, and actually increased the size of the stage. But, they all had flaws, and thats okay. Sometimes we like our heros flawed. For example, consider Dempseys popularity vs that of Gene Tunney. All those named were not the ideal either, but still enjoyed having huge followings. The key is they had outside help. They were media favorites. Marvin Hagler can tell you about not having it. He banged away in relative obscurity for a long time before the then Speaker of the House Tip ONeill helped him get his title shot. Without that help, he may never have got his shot. All fighters need help.

Sergio is as close to our ideal fighter as anyone out there. Understandably, he has a desire to get one or more of the big names into the ring, but so far has been unsuccessful. So far, he hasnt had much help from outside his own circles in doing so. Why? Isnt he deserving of such a fight? Say with Julio Cesar Chavez, or Felix Sturm, or Floyd Mayweather, Jr. We can understand why a particular fighter or his manager might not want him to jump into the ring with someone who has Sergios skill sets and difficult style. But, if the fighter is one of the best P4P fighters, and the recognized lineal champion of his division, why isnt the boxing media pushing for and demanding the fight or fights be made? Sergio has handled himself in exemplary fashion both in and out of the ring. Important to some and unimportant to others, he doesnt engage in trash talking, and as far as the public knows, he has avoided any problems outside of the ring. In fact, the opposite is true. He has taken steps to get himself involved in some very worthwhile causes.

It makes you wonder if the boxing media and cable networks truly are concerned with the welfare of the sport? It cant be that theyre worried about Sergio failing to make weight, or come up lame with some questionable injury? Sergio is always in great shape. Theres no danger of him tiring in the championship rounds. Just as our ideal fighter is, Sergio too is handsome, charismatic and articulate, which compliment his superior ring skills very nicely.

How then is it he hasnt got his just desserts? You have to admit, he sounds almost too good to be true. As our demonstration suggests, you cant conjure up a better ideal to promote and publicize in the sport. Promoters, the media and the cable networks should be drooling over such a fighter, such a superior individual. But, they are not?

Certainly people in the media and specifically the cable television networks are entitled to their opinions, and obviously have their favorites under contract. But, they also have an obligation to assist in trying to make the best fights, involving the most deserving fighters. Sergio qualifies as one of those fighters. He keeps winning and knocking people out, while coming away unscathed. But, still its not good enough. The hyperbole and forgiveness given to some fighters has not been extended to Sergio, not that he needs the latter. Frankly, it would appear the time has come for that to change. The media types in control should set aside their personal prejudices and selfish interests. They need to do whats right for a deserving fighter and for the good of the sport. Gentlemen, that means being proactive!

Success Story: Kelly Hatton

Memphis City Schools art teacher Kelly Hatton has been physically active, particularly as a softball player, since she was a little girl.

Lesley Young Special to The Commercial Appeal

Kelly Hatton, 30, who says she has been physically active all her life, found a new and challenging workout regimen in kickboxing. "It's new and different. It really feels like a personal trainer sometimes," she said.

"I still play for my husband's business league," said Hatton, 30. "I've worked out all my life, it seems like."

With a wedding looming ahead last year and feeling like she had plateaued with her workouts, she decided to try something different.

"Kickboxing has really conditioned me," Hatton said. "It feels like personal training sometimes."

Hatton has her own pair of boxing gloves -- a Christmas present from her father -- and goes to the gym to hit the bag on her own.

Hatton also attends two classes a week with instructor Mark Akin, a nationally ranked competitor, at Envision Memphis Downtown.

"There are usually only three regulars, so it's a tight-knit group with a lot of individual training," she said.

Hatton says she doesn't lose weight easily.

TRIAD reports success in pill drop effort

MICHIGAN CITY A La Porte County organization is happy with the results of a five-year campaign to encourage the proper disposal of unneeded, out-of-date or unused prescription drugs. According to the organizations data, more than 3,000 pounds of drugs have been collected in the effort.

This 3,043 pounds of pills, a ton and a half, will not end up in a childs hands or in our environment, TRIAD treasurer Tom Szawara said in a report issued March 1. These pills have been removed from La Porte County and incinerated in South Bend.

TRIAD is a volunteer organization comprised of three law enforcement agencies, members from 25 community organizations and several senior citizens. The organization began the pill collection effort in 2007. Utilizing community pill collection events, 504 pounds were collected the first year.

Public awareness efforts and multiple collection events in 2008 and 2009 spurred participation, with 852 pounds collected in 2008 and 812 pounds in 2009. The numbers since those two peak years have gone down, with 2011 contributing only 60 pounds from three community collection events to the campaigns total.

In 2011, TRIAD added permanent drop boxes in the La Porte County Sheriffs Office and the Michigan City Police Department. These drop boxes collected 150 pounds of pills from April 14 through March 1.

At the Michigan City Police Station, the drop box is available 24 hours a day. The box is designed to prevent anyone from reaching inside to get at the pills. It can only be opened by the police using a key.

We have a no questions asked policy, said Michigan City Police Sgt. Chris Yagelski.

Getting rid of prescription drugs through the drop box program achieves two objectives, Yagelski said. The first is that it is a more environmentally-friendly way of disposing of narcotics. The containers turned in are recycled through a outside contractor and reused in Haiti.

The second reason is that cleaning out home medicine cabinets is a wise thing to do.

People hold on to medication just in case, Yagelski said. If its there, children and grandkids can get into it to sell or use.

Thanks for Making "Success Inside and Out" a Success

On March 3, the Alaska Court System, in collaboration with Lemon Creek Correctional Center and Gastineau Human Services, conducted the fourth annual Success Inside and Out program at Lemon Creek Correctional Center. Success Inside and Out is a professional pre-release conference for the men and women at Lemon Creek Correctional Center. It is designed to reach prisoners who are close to release, with a goal of providing support and inspiration for the transition back into the community. The inspiration and format for the program came from Alaska Supreme Court Justice Dana Fabe, who initiated a similar program in Anchorage. Before her retirement, Juneau Superior Court Judge Patricia Collins coordinated the program in Juneau and made it a success for the first three years. Fifty eight inmates participated in this years program, and by all accounts it was a success.

The Steering Committee for Success Inside and Out this year included Chief Justice Walter Carpeneti, Superintendent Scott Wellard, Mike Truax, Charlie Carlson, Sharon Heidersdorf, Scott Ciambor, Brent Wilson, Shelley Travis, Michele Federico, KJ Metcalf, Peggy Metcalf, Anne Carpeneti, Rose Piper, Samantha Abernathy, David Wilson, Kelly Henriksen, and Hanna Sebold. These individuals spent countless hours organizing and planning the program. But they could not have made the program a success without the contributions of members of the community who truly care about the inmates who benefit from the program.

Speakers included Senator Dennis Eagan, Chief Justice Walter Carpeneti, and Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Corrections, Carmen Gutierrez. The program also included inspirational talks from individuals who have found success on the outside, including Joseph Contreras, Elizabeth Leonardson, Robert McCord, and Mack Parker. Sharon Gaiptman was the MC for the Success Inside and Out Fashion Show. Several inmates modeled proper attire for a job interview, while Neil Neisheim and Shelley Travis showed how not to dress. Music and irreverent commentary was provided by Colette Costa and her band. Paper Moon also provided musical entertainment, featuring Kelly Henriksen, Alan Michael, Gordon Sandy, and Martha DeFreest.

Time, energy, money, food, and gifts for door prizes were provided by Malia Hayward Insurance Agency; Reuben Willis, State Farm Insurance; Dr. Ben Gilbert, DDS; Pat Shea, Super Bear; Nancy DeCherney, Juneau Arts and Humanities Council; Wade Bryson, Subway; Mike White, McDonalds; Bullwinkles Pizza; Allen and Davida Alghren, Breeze-In; Mike Highly, Northland Services; J.C. Kestel, Office Plus; Vhee Batac, Alaskan and Proud; Rick and Rachel Kasnick, Island Pub; Stephen Beetle, Northern Sales; Ida Barnack, St. Vincent de Paul; Henry James, Salvation Army; Linda Sylvester, Girl Scouts of Alaska; Chris Abernathy, Wal-Mart; Charlie Carlson, Juneau Construction Academy; Ann Turner-Olsen; Mike Truax, the staff of Gastineau Human Services; LCCC Multicultural Club; Rose Piper; Scott and Monica Wellard, Shellie Eyler, Tricia Collins, Keitha Kolvig, Sue LeBeau, Jeanne Wightman, Tom Nave, and Susan Cox.

As part of the program, community members led panel discussions on a variety of topics including addiction treatment, housing, employment, education, food, medical services, banking, personal fitness, the arts, spirituality, healthy relationships, and surviving probation. Panel members included Samantha Abernathy, Johnny Aribam, Markus Bressler, Phil Campbell, Charlie Carlson, Scott Ciambor, Katie Cranor, Bridget Easaw, Michele Federico, Kelly Flynn, Robin Gilcrest, Karen Godnick, Eric Hamilton, Holly Handler, Doug Harris, Amy Hiley, Barbra Holian, Allen Hulett, Michael Hutcherson, Miriam Jensen, David Katzeek, Jeremy Kerr, Deb Laughlin, Liz Leonardson, Kelly Manning, John McConnochie, K.J. Metcalf, Peggy Metcalf, Brad Parfitt, Janine Reep, Tracy Rivera, Emma-Lily Schmitz, Hannah Sebold, Seth Siegel, Robert Smith, Eric Vang, Brent Wilson, and David Wilson.

We are all remarkably fortunate to live in a community where so many people care about others and are willing to give of themselves to make a difference. Thanks to every one of you, and please accept my apologies if I missed anyone.
