Ford: Should You Own this Success Story?

2008 saw a financial meltdown for the country and the auto industry was one of the worst hit. One company that continues to impress me with its turn around (without government intervention) is Ford (NYSE: F). It is a company that has rebounded, prospered and continues to show innovative leadership.

Rebounding from Extinction

Like many companies back in 2008 Fordstruggled as auto sales dried up very quickly. Losing $75 million a day, the stock dropped close to a buck in value. Three years later, the company made a $20 billion profit on sales of over $100 billion. $6200 in profit sharing was paid to each of its eligible employees and today the stock is trading at $11.95. Now that is quite a success story.

Continuing to Prosper

It has done well this year also. Recently Ford raises 2012 U.S. sales forecast. Its previous sales forecast was between 13.5 and 14.5 million in sales but now it is looking at close to 15 million. It is the North American operations that are carrying the company. Just in the U.S., first quarter sales were the best the company has in the last four years; plus March was the best since 2007 with the Ford Fusion recording its best month ever and the F-Series showing the strongest March sales in five years.

Canada has shown surprisingly similar success this year. January and February set a stronger than expected pace for the year. So now they have increased forecasts for yearly car sales. For the year they are projecting sales to be 1.67 million, which are 40,000 higher than was projected.

Innovation brought to the Consumer

Ford is continuing to research and bring innovative technology to the consumer through its products. With a goal is to be able to cut 750 pounds from a vehicle by the end of the decade and boost fuel efficiency substantially, Ford formed a partnership with Dow Automotive Systems to develop advanced carbon fiber composites that could be used in high-volume vehicles. Both companies together will research new manufacturing techniques and materials to cut weightyet strengthen the quality of its vehicles.

A victory in the 4x400 relay event was the turning point for the Plymouth North boys track and field team Wednesday in a win over Dennis-Yarmouth. The Blue Eagles improved to 2-0 on the season.

Ian Allen won two events, the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, posting a Division 3 state qualifying time in each of them. The 11.1 seconds time he ran in the 100 also tied his personal best.

Scott Dickson also won two events, posting the best distances of the day in the discus as well as the shot put.

John OBrien (400-meter) and Mike Bambrick (a personal record of 2:05.01 in the 800-meter event) completed Plymouth Norths sweep in the short and middle-distance sprints. Riley Woolsons time of 61.6 seconds won him the 400-meter low hurdles in a personal best time and qualified him for the state meet.

The difference in the meet was Plymouth Norths depth at the top of each event. Greg Marinos took second in the 100-meter in a state-qualifying time of 11.4 seconds. Alec Provo finished second in the 400, Todd Cushing placed second and Alek Andrews third in the mile, while Kevin McNeeley and Andrews came in second and third in the two-mile race, respectively.

Rob Naidoo took second in both hurdle events and came in third in the triple jump, while Conor Boris finished second in the javelin and third in the discus.

The Blue Eagles were also in action Saturday at the Route 228 Freshman/Sophomore Meet at Notre Dame of Hingham. Allen had another great day for himself, taking second in the 400-meter dash and seventh in the 100-meter event. Naidoo came in second in the 400-meter low hurdle and 10th in the triple-jump, Bambrick took third in the 800-meter, Nate Shannon finished 11th in the two-mile and Bobby Dee was 11th in the javelin.

Bambrick (2:05.00 in the 800) and Allen (53.67 in the 400) each put up personal record times that qualified them for the Division 3 state meet at the end of the season. Overall, Plymouth North placed 11th in the team competition.

Short term health & fitness goals can lead to long term success

Posted: at 9:14 pm

Health experts say a successful workout program is as much a mental challenge as it is a physical challenge.

Personal trainers at Broadmoor Fitness at Hansen Park in Kennewick say setting small goals every few weeks will help you achieve long term success.

Reporter Brian Brennan set out to lose 20 pounds in 3 months. To accomplish this goal Personal Trainer Shayne Smith set Brian up with a program to measure his progress about every three weeks.

"It's going to take you awhile. So you need things along the way to keep you going. Largely that has to do with increased athleticism, increased flexibility, increased strength, clothes fitting differently," says Personal Trainer Shayne Smith.

Smith says every client is different so he tailors the program to meet their needs. He set Brian up with the very demanding "300 Workout." It's a physical fitness test that actors and stunt men from the movie 300 completed after months of training.

The workout starts with 25 pull-ups then goes on to include 50 dead-lifts with 135 pounds, 50 push-ups, 50 box jumps, 50 floor wipers, 50 kettle bell clean and presses, and finally another 25 pull-ups.

Brian says when he first started the program he could barely do half the workout, but he can now do the whole thing in 25 minutes. He says every test he would do a little better than the time before, and that kept him motivated for the entire 3 months.

He's also happy to report he did lose the 20 pounds.

Don't try the 300 Workout without consulting a professional. If you'd like to set some goals or want more information call (509) 735-7744.

‘Boxcar Millionaire’ encourages students to define success, maintain honesty

Posted: at 9:14 pm

Sales expert Tom Black emphasized the importance of developing a personal definition of success in a recent presentation at Indiana State University.

Author of The Boxcar Millionaire, Black grew up impoverished and credits goal setting and hard work as reasons for his success in sales and business. He presented Achieving Sales Success Ethically, during which he explained his definition of success with the captivated audience as the progressive realization of a worthwhile goal or dream.

Organized by the Sales and Negotiations Center, his presentation served as the first event of the State Farm Circle of Influence speaker series and was in accordance with Ethics Week at ISU. Additional programming throughout the week included the annual ethics conference, coordinated by students in the Networks Professional Development Program.

In a presentation filled with anecdotes, quotes and analogies, Black shared what he believes to be the common denominator of success.

Black also clued students in on five values that he looks for in employees, including keeping a positive outlook about change.

He also referenced honesty to self, customers and co-workers as the simplest definition of ethics in business. Black used the analogy of business as a boat to illustrate cooperation and honesty among employees, specifically.

Another value described in Blacks presentation was the ability to dream big, regardless of circumstances and what others think. When asked what the biggest mistake was that he had made in his career, Blacks response was simple.

Jon Hawes, director of the Sales and Negotiations Center, thinks this message was an important one to bring to ISU students.

Hawes recognizes the value in bringing well-known field experts to campus with the goals of connecting with and providing outstanding role models for students.

Milwaukee drummer attributes musical, personal success to Dick Clark

Posted: at 9:14 pm

By Matt Montgomery & Nick Iannelli

CREATED Apr. 18, 2012 - UPDATED: Apr. 18, 2012

MILWAUKEE- An icon in television and music has passed away. Dick Clark died at the age of 82 Wednesday. He impacted the careers and lives of nearly countless musicians -- including one local group that served as the house band for one of Clark's TV shows in the 1960s.

The Robbs were a successful American pop-rock band made up of four members. Three were brothers from Oconomowoc. The fourth -- a man from Milwaukee named Craig Krampf.

Krampf was a prolific drummer with an expansive career who still remembers exactly what Dick Clark said as he introduced his band to the world. "I discovered this band in Chicago and they're gonna be the next big thing -- ladies and gentlemen, the Robbs."

Clark immediately took a shine to the group after they won a competition in Chicago in 1966, allowing them to perform on his daily TV program "Where the Action Is." Not long after their first appearance, the Robbs were installed as the show's house band. "It was an amazing thing,"said Krampf.

The band's relationship with the show lasted for about a year, but Krampf's interactions with Clark continued and memories came flooding back after hearing about Clark's death. "So many different moods or thoughts can cross your mind when someone passes,"said Krampf. "Iwas sad but then I just had a smile -- what an incredible human being."

Krampf attributes much of his personal success to Clark's advice and training. Adding one more name to the vast list of careers bolstered by the prestige and talent of entertainment legend Dick Clark. According to Krampf, "Clark taught us there things:never believe your own publicity...every band/artist had to be unique...the artist band members should never be the bad guy."

Krampf currently lives in Tennessee and has played on over 200 albums, including 60 Top 40 hits, plus many movie and TV soundtracks. Those efforts have garnered over 60 Gold & Platinum awards.

Travis Hobson has found formula for success

Posted: April 1, 2012 at 11:02 pm

without comments

JAMESTOWN, Pa. Club T owner and Jamestown native Travis Hobson, 22, has discovered a formula for success born from a personal pet peeve.

We had to go to other towns if we wanted to find something to do, Hobson said of his teen years. On weekends, you wanted to do something with your friends and there was nothing.

The 2007 Jamestown High School graduate quickly found ways to occupy his time; as an eighth grader, he was holding talent shows with friends. In high school, he was directing his own music videos for local bands and making a profit working as a wedding DJ on weekends. Despite his busy schedule, Hobson recognized that there were plenty of other teens just like him who wanted to have fun without getting into trouble.

So when his DJing on the weekends proved popular and he saw promise in the basement of the restaurant where he rented storage space, Hobson, 18 years old at the time, opened a teen dance club. At first, dances were held monthly, but the events proved so popular that Hobson threw them every weekend. Before long, he was considering finding a permanent space. When a building went up for sale across from Mark Twain Manor, 210 Liberty St., Hobson purchased it. While still running the dance club, Hobson rehabbed the building and in April 2011, opened Club T at its 215 Liberty St. location.

People say to kids, Dont do this, dont do that. But then they give them nothing to fill the void. Thats what this place does fill a gap.

In its current incarnation, Club T fills that gap in multiple ways, By day, the venue is an inviting and surprisingly sophisticated sandwich shop boasting fresh ingredients and free Wi-Fi. But by night, the space is transformed, blazing with dozens of lights, TVs playing music videos, a second-story DJ booth manned by Hobson and a spacious dance floor. It is a setting where tweens and teens feel free to dance their hearts out to a mixture of top 40 and dance classics. Karaoke is also featured.

Not only do they have a place to go, but they feel like its their place, he said. The club offers two three-hour dance nights a week; on Fridays, grades 3-6 are on the floor; Saturday nights are reserved for grades 6-12. Cover charge is $6 per person and attendance averages 60-70 per night, Hobson said. Club rules require all attendees to sign in; those who leave before the end of the dance cannot return. Other club rules include forbidding bullying or profanity. Violation of the rules means expulsion from Club T, with a probationary period to follow.

Hobson said that Club Ts dozens of regulars have created a community that ensures the rules are followed, and he has few problems during events.

We have some self-policing going on from are regulars. They tell (new visitors), Hey, you cant do that, he said.

Club Ts staff have worked hard to make sure that the business keeps its reputation in the community as a safe and fun venue for youths.

Faison predicting success with NC gov's run

Posted: at 11:02 pm

without comments

By GARY D. ROBERTSON, Associated Press

GREENVILLE, N.C. Bill Faison played the maverick's role last fall by scrutinizing what he called fellow Democratic Gov. Beverly Perdue's inactivity about high unemployment and spending cuts by the Republican-led Legislature and by promoting his own jobs plan.

The Orange County state House member traveled like a statewide candidate, speaking to Democratic groups and their allies. While the medical malpractice attorney said he wouldn't run for governor unless Perdue stepped aside, he also predicted publicly she would quit the race.

Faison's forecast came true Jan. 26 when Perdue announced she wouldn't seek re-election. He got in the race two days later. He said people are hyping his ability to push Perdue out.

"No one would be able to force someone out of a race like a sitting governor," Faison said in an interview, adding that going around the state to talk about putting people back to work "is something that ought to be above reproach."

The 65-year-old Faison is now keeping to the same format he used as a quasi-candidate, hoping personal interaction with voters will reap electoral rewards. He was willing to spend two hours in Greenville at the end of a long day of campaigning to meet a combined 25 Democrats.

As one of six hopefuls for the Democratic nomination, Faison now has new predictions: That his performance in April televised debates will separate him from his leading rivals, Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton and former U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge; and that the electorate will gravitate toward him in the May 8 primary and in November against the presumptive Republican nominee.

"With your help, I'll go beat Pat McCrory this fall," Faison told 10 people at the organizational meeting of the Pitt County Young Democrats at a downtown Greenville bistro. "I don't think it'll be a huge beating, but I'll beat him."

Faison doesn't lack confidence or personal wealth. His campaign had more than $500,000 as of Dec. 31, almost all of it in the form of his personal loans. He's already run a commercial on television. More personal funds likely are needed if he wants to make a TV ad splash in the primary campaign's final weeks.

Faison is keeping the jobs plan he's promoted since September the anchor of his gubernatorial campaign.
