Camp a stepping stone to success
Posted: at 2:21 pm
ZANESVILLE --For Zanesville High School graduate Josh Mason, Creating Artists, Stimulating Success Camp has been a stepping stone to his personal success.
He attributes his Rotary award for leadership and Class A Superior rating from solo and ensemble competition for upright bass from the guidance he received from nine years of participation in the youth camps. He now is paying it forward by serving as a mentor to current students.
"If it wasn't for CASS Camp, I probably wouldn't have pursued my music in high school, and wouldn't be considering music as my college major," said Mason, who is planning to attend Muskingum University.
He is spending the week as a camp counselor to help others work toward their future goals.
"I love working with the students. They are the best group you could ask for. We are going to give them that extra push," he said.
The ninth annual CASS Camp began Sunday at Hallowed Hills Conference Center and will continue through Friday. Throughout the week, students will participate in projects geared toward helping them achieve self-esteem, self-confidence and self-awareness in preparation for future careers. Free concerts that are open to the public will take place each evening. Students can continue to register throughout the week.
CASS Camp is part of the nonprofit self-improvement organization CASS-MIND (Creating Artists, Stimulating Success/Making Impact, Negotiating Decisions) founded by life coach Cassandra McDonald.
McDonald said participants had the opportunity to select a business or performing arts category for the week to hone their talents and skills. However, each participant will have opportunities to bring their creative and logical skills together, McDonald said.
"You need both. The purpose of the camp is to balance both sides," she said, adding that expanding both types of talents helps in future career choices. "Every interview is a performance, every outfit is a costume and every stand is a pose. You never speak, dress or stand without a purpose."
CASS Camp is open to all students from kindergarten through 12th grade, with overnight camp for those in seven through 12th grade. New this year is a project that mimics the popular TV show "The Apprentice." In addition, participants will be working with music instructor Craig Lane, of Detroit, throughout the week to create a DVD, and can select from band, drama, sign language, puppets, strings, chorus, vocals or piano for the presentation.

INDIANAPOLIS, June 12, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- USA Funds surveys of students who had received personal finance education through their college or university disclose that nine of 10 respondents changed how they manage their personal finances and college life.
Among the 1,522 students who responded to the quarterly surveys, 90 percent reported changing at least one financial or college success behavior after completing lessons of USA Funds Life Skills, an online financial literacy and student success curriculum for college students. Of those students reporting changes in their personal finance behaviors, the respondents reported making an average of 10 behavioral changes.
The five behavioral changes most frequently cited by the survey respondents along with the number of respondents citing each change are as follows:
USA Funds invited all students who had completed at least one USA Funds Life Skills lesson between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2011, to complete an online survey. Respondents could choose from a list of 25 possible personal finance behavior change statements, including topics related to managing school life and student loans, managing student finances and managing personal life issues.

CQUniversity has proven itself as an avenue for success for many of its students from around the world. Here are a few recent success stories from students from India, Malaysia, Indonesia and Bangladesh.
*
A CQUniversity alumnus, Dr Poonam Bhatia, who now works for the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR), is currently undertaking a research project on phytoremediation.
Once funding is secured for this project, CQUniversity could be collaborating with a leading Indian university to get rid of heavy metals from Indian and Australian soil using hyper accumulator plants.
The project would provide an opportunity for postgraduate students from Australia to spend time in India (and vice versa) working on a common research topic of benefit to both countries, as well as an opportunity to offer joint degrees.

CQUniversity Bachelor of Music (Jazz & Popular Music) student and Vice-Chancellors Award winner, Niken Tajudin, graduated inaDiploma in Music (Classical Singing) from Malaysias MARA Institute of Technology where she had the chance to perform in front of the King, important political figures, at festivals and alongside Malaysias legendary rock group, Wings.
When asked why she had chosen CQUniversity to further her studies, Niken said she needed to be different to gain international recognition; experience different cultures and music genres; and gain numerous performing experiences. And with these in mind, the University was automatically her first choice.
The University is industry-oriented and has allowed Niken to experience first-hand the different needs of the market and gain enriching performing experiences. She is enthusiastically pursuing her dreams here at CQUniveristy and was extremely delighted to share the beauty of music with the world when she participated in the Universitys Jazzmania concert last month.

4 Steps to Follow for a Successful Retirement
Posted: June 11, 2012 at 9:12 pm
Most of us dream of a successful retirement. But a comfortable retirement doesn't just happen. Retirement security requires planning and effort. As you consider your retirement future, here are four steps to follow for a successful retirement:
1. Figure out what you want your retirement to look like. Your definition of success might be different from someone else's. Your first step is to figure out what you want your retirement to look like. Partial employment, travel, the ability to sit on your porch, service, a new hobby, and visiting with friends and relatives are all things to consider. Think about what you are most likely to enjoy, and be realistic about what needs to happen to make your dream a reality. Starting this process as early as you can will help motivate you to save and invest for your retirement goals.
2. Assess what you need for a successful retirement. Realistically determine what is needed for your personal retirement success. Consider what monthly income you will need from interest on your investments or other income sources in order to meet your goals. How big of a nest egg will you need to support your version of retirement success? Try to realistically account for expenses related to living and entertainment, as well as the effects of inflation. There are online calculators that can help you with your assessment.
3. Create a plan to help you reach your retirement goals. Once you know what you need in order to achieve a successful retirement, it's time to make a plan to get there. Understand the risks and rewards of investing, and learn about your options. Find out what you can do to take advantage of an employee match program from your retirement plan. Look for ways to save up money and create regular passive income to supplement your retirement savings. Diversify your strategies and investments so that you can reduce risk. Make a plan to invest regularly and pay down debt so that you will be more likely to reach your goals.
4. Stick to your plan. Now that you have a realistic plan to achieve retirement success, it's important to stick with it. Your plan should be developed with long-term success in mind, which means it should probably include investment strategies that favor the big picture like dollar-cost averaging and paying down debt. Unless you experience a major financial setback, don't let short-term market conditions scare you into making significant changes to your plan.
While you might need to evaluate and tweak your plan periodically, a good retirement plan rarely needs a major overhaul unless your objectives change dramatically or if there is a fundamental shift somewhere. Remember that a lot of the noise and panic surrounding short-term market movements is just hype and sensationalism. If you stick to a well-made plan, you are more likely to reach your retirement goals.

This time it's personal: Queensland angered by Stuart's smug jibe
Posted: June 10, 2012 at 6:19 pm
PROP Dave Shillington has made it clear Queensland will take added motivation into the second State of Origin game after NSW coach Ricky Stuart accused them of being smug and ungracious winners.
''I take it personally, I think we all do,'' Shillington said.
The war of words has ramped up before game two at ANZ Stadium on Wednesday, reviving memories of Maroons coach Mal Meninga's ''rats and filth'' newspaper column after last year's series, when the relationship between the two coaches became severely strained.

Upset by Meninga's comments that the Blues lacked the mentality to win Origin, Stuart wrote in a column: ''To be honest, I have had a gutful of Queensland's smugness and their fake graciousness in victory.''
Meninga said: ''We work very hard, and Locky [retired Queensland captain Darren Lockyer] will tell you, we show a lot of respect, I believe. We prepare hard. We put the game first, we put the team first, we do everything we can to make sure we do everything that is right.
''I don't know where he [Stuart] gets that terminology from.''
Lockyer, who ended his Origin career last year by leading Queensland to a sixth straight series win, said during his reign as captain and before he took over that Queensland sides had always shown respect and been humble in victory and defeat.
''We're very focused on success and we never carry on too much when we win,'' Lockyer said. ''If you ask me, I reckon we've always been pretty humble in success. People may construe that in other ways but I think that's just us being humble and focused on being successful.''
Lockyer said the media coverage of Origin was so intense that every word spoken about it was analysed. ''It's part and parcel of the pantomime I guess,'' he said.

Meg Loncharic: Mariner's Ball a huge success
Posted: at 5:16 am
Every time the U.S. Brig Niagara is the focus of an event, it draws a crowd. More than 500 people attended the second Mariner's Ball, held June 2 at the Erie Maritime Museum.
The Perry 200 Commemoration chaired by Denise Illig Robison paid tribute to Erie's rich naval heritage.
This unforgettable evening had it all -- from a VIP party complete with signature cocktail to a War of 1812 color guard. There were cannon blasts, three flyover salutes and a fireworks display.
The gala more than lived up to its theme: A Salute to the American Spirit. Guests included U.S. Rep. Glenn Thompson, of Titusville.
Niagara Senior Capt. Walter Rybka presented the 2012 Mariner's Award to Rear Adm. Matthew Kohler. Now living in Fort Mead, Md., Kohler is deputy commander, U.S. Fleet Cyber Command, and deputy commander, U.S. 10th Fleet. The admiral's parents, Joseph and Sally Kohler, his twin brother and three sisters also attended the gala.
The fete highlighted an honorary committee of naval officers with ties to Erie who formed the receiving line.
Lt. Cmdr. Stuart Dye, of Bethesda, Md., who's married to Mary Virginia Illig Dye, sister of Denise Robison, also enjoyed the party.
Other guests included Lt. Leigh Loesel, a naval fighter pilot from Lemoore, Calif., and Lt. Stuart Zurn, of Reading, who's a retired Navy SEAL. Capt. Robert Lasher and his son, Cmdr. Brian Lasher, were also in attendance.
The greeters included Lt. Cmdr. Jason Anders of West Palm Beach, Fla.; Rear Adm. Robert Frick of Haymarket, Va.; Capt. Eric Marshall, of North East; and Cmdr. Alan Belovarac, of Erie.
Guests gathered indoors for the silent auction and dance music as well as at outdoor grazing stations in the plaza area where the ship is docked. There were four large refreshment tents and a fifth one at the end of the pier where the U.S. Navy Band performed.

Graduates: Earned success is reward in itself

Graduation season, the best I can tell, has flown by in a swirl of flowing gowns, turned tassels, ovations (sometimes of relief) and congratulatory checks penned by well-wishers, as inviolable tradition holds.
All the while, a tradition no less unwavering played itself out: For the 15th consecutive year a span that began before this year's high school graduates entered preschool your humble correspondent's invitations to deliver a keynote address were, once again, lost in the mail or the Internet ether.
No matter. As ever, I have prepared a silent version of my undelivered (yet again sigh ) remarks.
Ahem.
To members of the Class of 2012, proud, grateful and no doubt exhausted parents, envious siblings, extended families who traveled far to join us, honored guests and, to be sure, the perpetually underappreciated staff and faculty who yoked you together to coax, cajole, inspire and otherwise drive you across today's finish line, I bring you greetings and thanks.
As an inflexion point that is, a moment that changes everything graduation is a rarity. You can see it coming. It occupies a spot on the calendar, right down to the moment it's supposed to begin. You can prepare for it; you know what to wear and what to expect.
School teaches us that's how things work. Everything squeezes onto a schedule. Tests, progress reports, conference nights, ballgames, dances and other extracurricular activities each has its time and place; each points toward this culminating moment.
Actual life, you will discover, is far less orderly. Crucial events fly by in a blur. In time, you will recognize when it comes to inflexion points, most are identifiable only in your rearview mirror.
Understanding that, the best available advice comes from the Boy Scouts of America: Be prepared. An ancillary piece of worthy advice comes from Absorbine Jr.: Be flexible.
