When traveling to a daunting opponent's home field, the most comforting thing for a team can be turning around and seeing a stalwart goalie in its own net. The Michigan field hockey team has relied on junior goalie Haley Jones to be all that and more as she earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors last week for her performances at No. 12 Iowa and Central Michigan, which culminated a successful regular season.

Against the Hawkeyes, Jones recorded 10 saves while setting the tone for Michigans key conference victory. She followed up that performance two days later by recording the teams fifth shutout of the season against the Chippewas. Despite her personal success, Jones views the recognition as a part of the teams success.

It shows that our program is doing well this year, Jones said. There was a lot of skepticism coming in because were young.

The Wolverines will enter the Big Ten Tournament against Ohio State on Thursday riding a six-game winning streak, thanks in large part to Jones.

Shes been keeping us in every game, making the saves that she needs to make and then making some spectacular saves to help us win the game, said Michigan coach Marcia Pankratz.

The Wolverines finished their regular season with a 12-5 record, and Jones allowed just 27 goals on the season, only averaging 1.67 goals against per game. Jones chooses to credit the defense for a great deal of her success this season.

When theyre having a good game, Id like to say Im having a good game too, Jones said. Im comfortable with the defense that we have in the backfield right now so it lets me step up and be a little bit more aggressive.

Pankratz said she feels that having a dependable goalie has a great effect on the rest of the team.

The players in front of her are playing with a lot of confidence because they know shes back there playing solid, and that matters a lot, Pankratz said.

In addition to her success in the net, Jones plays a large role off of the field as a team captain, earning praise from Pankratz for her leadership abilities.

Khloe Kardashian's first outing as the new co-host of The X Factor in the US helped boost the show's audience by 30 per cent, yet the reality star got mixed reviews for a nipple-baring debut that made headlines - but many American TV critics found awkward.

Kardashian, 28, best known for starring with socialite sisters Kim and Kourtney in Keeping Up with the Kardashians, shocked some viewers by wearing a sheer purple blouse without a bra on last week's first live episode of the TV singing contest.

"I think the air conditioning is on high tonight. It's very distracting," judge and producer Simon Cowell quipped on the show, apparently referring to the glimpses of nipple.

But Kardashian was less impressive in her hosting duties.

The Washington Post said Kardashian "came across like the novice she is, shouting her lines despite the mic clutched in her hand and making awkward small talk with contestants and judge and executive producer Simon Cowell."

Nevertheless, Kardashian brought more eyeballs to the show. Some 7.4 million viewers watched The X Factor on Fox television, according to early ratings data, up some 30 per cent from last week's 5.7 million and a 13 per cent increase in the 18-49 age group most coveted by advertisers.

Kardashian was Cowell's personal pick for the job as part of his efforts to revamp the singing contest after a disappointing first season. But the reality star's lack of experience had already raised eyebrows, and X Factor has often drawn a smaller audience than last year.

Cowell told reporters earlier this week that Kardashian "wants to prove (to) anyone who doubted her that she's capable of doing the job ... she really has got a fun personality."

The K Factor proves a sheer success

James Balog first visited the glaciers of Iceland in 2005, on assignment for the New Yorker. His work and personal life have been consumed by ice ever since.

This whole effort is not just about time-lapse engineering and about the film, but also about single-frame imagery, the connection between the human mind and eye and heart and these incredible landscapes.

Chasing Ice, a documentary tracing his seven-year effort to illustrate just how fast glaciers around the northern rim of the planet are disappearing, opens in theaters next weekend. While ice is nominally the subject of the film, it is Balogs own personal experiencesranging from delirious success in the field to nearly debilitating frustrations caused by trying to work in some of the coldest, most remote corners of the planetthat set the film apart from being just a rant against a changing climate.

In 2007, Balog formalized his photographic hunt for receding glaciers as the Extreme Ice Survey (EIS) and then set out with small teams to both photograph and set up time-lapse cameras on glaciers in Greenland, Iceland, the Nepalese Himalaya, Alaska and the Rocky Mountains.

Like most in recent years who have been trying to bring stories and evidence of climate change to the public, on the eve of the films premiere, Balog is relieved that thanks to the recent superstorm that swept the East Coast, high-ranking politicians, including New Yorks Governor Andrew Cuomo and NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg, have very publicly linked big weather events with climate change.

"There is a kind of tyranny of the marketplace right now," says Balog from his Boulder, Colorado office, "which has suppressed a free and open and honest dialogue about climate change. Ultimately the politicians dont want to touch the subject for fear of getting entangled with financial interests connected with fossil fuels. And those financial interestsbig oil, big gaskeep saying We Shalt Not Discuss the Subject of Climate Change.Which is why the story of climate change has had such a hard time getting out during these past seven years, since we began the EIS.But because of Sandy, everyones eyes are all of a sudden wide open. When you have the governor of one of the major states in the country (Cuomo) saying the climate is changing and were in a new normal, that puts the issue at the top of the social agenda."

TakePart: Having labored for many years with a small team in very cold and lonely places, are you surprised by the success of the film?

James Balog: Seven or eight years ago it was not at all clear this film would even be made. When it was finished it wasnt clear it would have any kind of audience or any sort of success. So to wind up with the wonderful quality of the film, the tremendous circulation and the acclaim and all of a sudden to be landing it in the middle of the climate change debate is gratifying to say the least.
