China's Ultra-Rich See Shrinking Personal Fortunes
Posted: September 25, 2012 at 3:15 pm
Almost half of China's ultra-rich saw their wealth shrink in the past year as the Chinese stock markets slumped, according to an annual ranking of the country's 1000 richest individuals, with those in the solar and textile sectors the hardest hit.
The average wealth of the country's richest fell 9 percent from the previous year to $860 million, while the number of billionaires fell to 251, from 271, the 2012 Hurun Rich List showed.
Of the wealthiest 1,000 individuals, 469 saw their wealth shrink, 291 saw their wealth grow, while 114 stayed the same. There were 150 new faces in the list this year.
Beverage magnate Zong Qinghou, who topped the list in 2010, regained the top spot with a personal fortune of $12.6 billion, thanks to his 80 percent holding of soft drinks brand Wahaha which reported net profits of over $1 billion last year.
Entertainment and real estate tycoon Wang Jianlin, who topped the rankings last year, slipped to second place with personal wealth of $10.3 billion. Wang shook up the entertainment industry earlier this year, with his $2.6 billion acquisition of U.S. cinema chain AMC Entertainment - the largest-ever international acquisition by an individual on the rich list.
But wealth in the solar and textile industries waned. Qiu Guanghe of garment maker Senmir, who placed at 58, saw his wealth plunge by 60 percent to $2.2 billion. While Zhu Gongshan, chairman of GCL-Poly - the world's largest producers of polysilicon and wafers used in solar panels, who ranked at 168, had his wealth decline by nearly 60 percent.
China's solar sector has been suffering from a sharp decline in profitability due to slumping global sales and high domestic competition, while growth in the mainland textile sector is slowing under weak demand both domestically and externally.
Adding to these pressures has been the dismal performance of China's stock market (Shanghai Stock Exchange: .SSEC), which is down 8 percent this year, after declining more than 20 percent in 2011.
For the first time since 1999, income from property dropped into second place as the top source of wealth, behind manufacturing. Nick Kounis, Head of Macro Research, Group Economics, ABN AMRO, says this is a reflection of the changing structure of China's economy, away from property towards consumption.

Personal tales more compelling than political drama in 'Zeitgeist Chronicles'
Posted: at 3:15 pm
In this political season, an interesting new work is being presented at Dillard University, that explores the degree to which we allow ourselves to be defined by and have our lives affected by political ideologies and beliefs.
In The Zeitgeist Chronicles, playwright Stephen Montagne tackles a wide range of ideas and arguments but in this workshop production, more refinement of those ideas is necessary before this work is ready to be further shopped around.
As we are barely a month away from the presidential election, The Zeitgeist Chronicles revisits the so-called Hope and Change election of 2008, viewing it through the eyes of several sets of characters. With a large cast, the storylines cross a variety of racial, socio-economic, political, religious and generational points of view.
Using that election campaign as the backdrop, Montagne creates a fairly compelling group of characters. At the center is a New Orleans family watching its ill and aging patriarch still struggling to survive several years after losing his home and business in Hurricane Katrina. Others include a Southern-born liberal reporter and staunch Hillary Clinton supporter who is interviewing a dying relative, a reformed racist now supporting Barack Obama; a 25-year-old Mormon standup comedian and his Rat Pack era mentor, an atheist now living in a retirement home.
While the play is aiming for a relevancy today, Montagnes framing of his story with the last campaign primaries and all is its most cumbersome aspect. We are not far enough removed from that election cycle for it to be seen fully and fairly from a historical perspective. And without examining the subsequent four years of the Obama presidency, that campaign alone doesnt have the relevance to affect the November 2012 election.
In addition, while the playwright does seek some sense of balance, its clear that he is primarily attempting to be an Obama cheerleader. Ignoring any accomplishments or failures of the current administration, hes not looking for the reelection of President Obama; through the wistful haze of a faux nostalgia, he wants to resurrect candidate Obama, and all that talk of hope and change.
On whichever side of the aisle one sits, this is political discourse about as deep as a Facebook posting or Twitter monologue. The scenes of grown men still acting like boys playing with their Star Wars toys becomes an all-too fitting metaphor.
The common political theme, while intended to give the piece its cohesiveness, is overwrought, and unfortunately overwhelms the more interesting personal stories that Montagne creates.
The most intriguing and perplexing character is Ethan Grey, the Mormon standup comic, struggling with his past and who wants to remain true to his faith while faced with numerous temptations to its moral strictures. Played with conviction by Taylor McClellan, Ethans journey rings true. His interaction with Dorothy, a friend of his mother, makes for some of the most touching moments. This is due largely to Janet Sheas quite lovely performance as Dorothy, a spitfire of an old gal, who has a lot of straightforward wisdom to share with her younger protge.
The wisdom of age also is seen in Spencer Howards portrayal as Terence Thompson, the dying father who sees his family being split apart. It would be easy to play him as a gruff, foolish old man. But Howard shows the spark within the character that is blunt but cuts through layers of bull to make his point. As his two oldest sons, Damien Moses and Martin Bats Bradford also are effective.

Ennis not focused on personal battle
Posted: at 3:15 pm
Canterbury have the utmost respect for Melbourne's `Big Three', but Bulldogs skipper Michael Ennis says his side can't get caught up in one-on-one battles in Sunday's NRL grand final.
Ennis will go head-to head with the best No.9 in the game in Melbourne skipper Cameron Smith - one third of a triple Storm threat which also features Cooper Cronk and Billy Slater.
But the personal duel will take a back seat to team-oriented goals for Ennis - despite the Bulldogs rake acknowledging the importance of keeping Smith quiet around the ruck.
"Coming up against Cameron Smith, obviously he's the benchmark in our position and it's always a good challenge," Ennis said.
"I respect Cameron very highly, he's a terrific player and a terrific fellow, so I know I'll need to be at my best in my side and not worry about what Cameron's going to do for Melbourne.
"If you go into a game like this trying to win personal battles, you're letting your teammates down.
"I've got a role to play in this side and I don't think Cameron Smith or your Cooper Cronks or your Billy Slaters are blokes that can be nullified individually.
"They've got wonderful support around them.
"I know they talk about the big three, but there's plenty of other guys in their side that are terrific players."
But Smith, Slater and Cronk seemingly hold the key, with their play having a mesmerising effect not just on fans, but opposition players as well.

Kraton Performance Polymers Reveals Medical Stopper Study Results
Posted: at 12:21 am
HOUSTON, Sept. 24, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Kraton Performance Polymers, Inc. (NYSE: "KRA"), a leading global producer of styrenic block copolymers or "SBCs," announces plans to present the results of its medical stopper study at the 2012 International Rubber Expo, 182nd Technical Meeting & Educational Symposium in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The paper, "Improved Medical Stopper Solutions with High Performance, Anionic Isoprene Rubber," compares the chemistry and performance of four rubber families that are currently used in medical stoppers: anionic polyisoprene (IR); Ziegler-Natta IR; chlorobutyl rubber; and bromobutyl rubber. The study was performed by a third party using regular medical stopper test protocols. It showed that medical stoppers made with Cariflex polyisoprene products, an anionic IR made by Kraton Performance Polymers, could easily pass the extraction test under Japanese Pharmacopeia (JP) 7-03 (XV revision 2006), which is the most stringent protocol, while Ziegler-Natta IR failed or only marginally passed.
"The results of the study will demonstrate that anionic isoprene rubber delivers a unique combination of advantages including the absence of natural rubber proteins present in NR, an odor-free formulation with very low residual metals and no residual catalysts, low needle insertion force, and minimal risk of rubber fragmentation (coring) and medication contamination due to needle insertion," said Dr. Philippe Henderson of Kraton Polymers. The anionic polymerization process is unique to Kraton Polymers for the manufacture of high molecular weight polyisoprene.
Dr. Henderson's presentation is scheduled at 4:15 p.m., on Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at the International Rubber Expo, 182nd Technical Meeting & Educational Symposium, Cincinnati, OH, in room 203-204 at the Duke Energy Center. To register for the event, please visit the Expo website. Personal interviews to discuss the study or Cariflex polyisoprene products may be scheduled by contacting Marcie Coronado at 281-504-4975, or Marcie.coronado@kraton.com.
Cariflex polyisoprene products are the ideal alternative to natural rubber for applications that demand extreme purity, exceptional protection and consistently high quality. Cariflex products offer a pure and versatile option for manufacturing applications that require the high tensile strength and tear resistance of natural rubber without the impurities that cause discoloration, odor and allergic reactions. For additional information about Cariflex products, please visit the Kraton website.

MMRGlobal Receives Notice of Allowance for Dominant Game-Changing Personal Health Record Patent
Posted: at 12:21 am
LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwire - Sep 24, 2012) - MMRGlobal, Inc. ( OTCBB : MMRF ) ("MMR") today announced that the Company received another Notice of Allowance, or NOA. The patent will grant protection to the Company by allowing it to assert legal claims that any Web-based portal used for consumer access to personal health information covered by the patent constitutes an infringement of the Company's intellectual property, unless it is provided or licensed by the Company. The NOA, U.S. Serial No. 13/041,809 from the United States Patent and Trademark Office for its "Method and System for Providing Online Records," significantly expands the scope of the Company's existing health IT intellectual property for provisioning of Personal Health Records (PHRs) regardless of the healthcare professional providing the information. The patents come in advance of the Meaningful Use requirement that patients have online access to their protected health information through a Personal Health Record or other form of patient portal by 2014. The Company believes that this NOA makes it difficult for eligible healthcare professionals to fully qualify for incentives under the HITECH Act because one of the core requirements is to provide patients access to their personal health information through a Web-based portal.Accordingly, this patent could prevent EMR and PHR vendors from allowing patients access to personal health information without a license from MMR.
Robert H. Lorsch, MMRGlobal Chairman and CEO, said, "Since 2005, MMR has been building a Personal Health Record that seamlessly connects to any doctor or hospital regardless of the systems in the office, be it plain paper or the most advanced electronic medical records systems. This overriding patent will help protect the integrity of our products and raise the bar for PHRs while also making it extremely difficult to comply with certain Meaningful Use requirements under the HITECH Act without a license from MMR for the Company's IP.The NOA comes after nearly six years of effort and the expenditure of millions of dollars in technology on behalf of the Company's shareholders. The licensing of our health IT patent portfolio could mean a substantial ongoing revenue stream to the Company."
This patent will join the Company's patent numbers 8,117, 646; 8,117,045; and 8,121,855, and are directed toward the transmission of Personal Health Records and other protected health information to a PHR by fax or voice.MMRGlobal is a leading provider of Personal Health Records through its MyMedicalRecords PHR suite of products and services (www.mmrvideos.com) and also offers its MMRPro electronic document management and imaging systems for healthcare professionals (www.mmrprovideos.com).The Company also provides MyEsafeDepositBox storage solutions for consumers. The Company has more than 180 additional claims pending and applied for and is continuing to file additional claims under its global portfolio of Personal Health Record and document management and imaging patents.
According to Ted Ward of the law firm Liner Grode Stein Yankelevitz Sunshine Regenstreif & Taylor LLP (www.LinerLaw.com), which represents the Company as patent litigation counsel, "The MMR health IT Patent Portfolio means that anyone who provides a consumer with a Web-based portal, including hospitals, physicians and pharmacies, where the consumer can access personal health information may be infringing on MMR's IP."Ward added that Liner is in the process of contacting hundreds of hospitals and physician group practices to discuss opportunities to license the Company's IP in advance of 2014 Meaningful Use requirements to provide patients online access to their health information within four days of the information being available to the doctor and within 36 hours of being discharged from the hospital.
According to John Goodhue from McKee, Voorhees & Sease (www.ipmvs.com), patent counsel to the Company since filing of its first patents in 2005, "This is a highly significant addition to MMRGlobal's health IT patent portfolio, especially as it pertains to Personal Health Records, by helping the Company benefit from its early innovations in the industry."
Goodhue added, "The latest patent application is of potential relevance to numerous types of Personal Health Record portal offerings that allow users to privately manage and maintain their health records. This is further directed toward providing a Personal Health Record portal that can receive records from any healthcare provider and that allows a user to store and manage his or her records independently from their healthcare provider(s), such as by organizing the files into separate file folders."
The resulting patent will be a significant addition to the Company's Health IT patent portfolio which also includes previously issued patents and claims in the U.S. and patents issued, pending and applied for in countries of commercial interest including Australia, Singapore, New Zealand, and Mexico.

Lady Gaga’s privacy concerns are ‘ludicrous,’ former personal assistant alleges
Posted: September 23, 2012 at 8:12 pm
Lady Gaga has no private parts.
A Long Island woman who claims the pop star owes her hundreds of thousands of dollars in overtime pay says the singers recent demands for privacy in their court battle are ludicrous.
Gaga is probably the last person in the world to care about her privacy, exposing herself in all manner of bizarre and intimate ways for the world to see every day, lawyers for her former personal assistant, Jennifer ONeill, argue in court papers filed in Manhattan federal court Friday.
The singer struts on stage in underwear and torn fishnets, was shown smoking pot at a show and writhed around nearly nude for star photographer Terry Richardsons 2011 book, Lady Gaga x Terry Richardson.
FilmMagic
YES,THAT DRESS DOES MAKE YOU LOOK FAT! Lady Gagawho has admitted to packing on 25 poundsleaves her hotel in Paris yesterday in an especially figure-concealing outfit. The pop star was on her way to perform for her international BornThis WayBall tour. Speaking of her new curves, she has said, I really dont feel bad about it, not even for a second.
The book shows Gaga topless, with only her hands covering her boobs, lying with her legs spread, exposing a hole in the crotch of her stockings, and with her breasts exposed while putting on her famed meat dress.
Yet Gaga, born Stefani Germanotta, is fighting a subpoena from ONeill seeking Richardsons unpublished photos, calling them private and personal in court papers.
ONeill says the photos will show her toiling for Gaga, from her bedroom to backstage costume changes on her 2010 Monster Ball tour, during which a five-person team helped switch stars outfit 17 times per performance. ONeills image is not in the book.
I was frequently at Ms. Germanottas side, often ready with coffee and/or water, from dawn to dawn, ONeill says in court papers. I was glued to Ms. Germanotta to such an extent that at one point I was asked . . . to step back so that I would not be in the way during photo shoots.

Posted: at 8:14 am
LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwire - Sep 19, 2012) - MMRGlobal, Inc. ( OTCBB : MMRF ) (MMR) today announced that Mike Dietrich, a business executive formerly with Office Depot, School Specialty and Troxell Communications, will work with the Company leading the effort to sell its MyMedicalRecords Personal Health Record products and services to retailers, with particular focus on the launch of MMR's Prepaid Personal Health Record cards at retail.Dietrich will also manage sales to the education marketplace including schools and universities. A nine-year veteran of the United States Air Force, Dietrich will also assist the Company with programs for Veterans, including connecting to MMRGlobal's MyBlueButton.com initiative.Additionally, Dietrich will use his experience and expertise to work with CEO Bob Lorsch on the sale of Emergency Services through Personal Health Records to major wireless carriers and cell phone retailers and operators.
"Mike Dietrich is one of the most qualified individuals that MMR could have added to its team," said Lorsch. "I met Mike when I was CEO of SmarTalk, where he was first to launch prepaid phone cards at retail in office superstores. It was Mike who forced the creation of swipe activation at point-of-sale, which I invented and patented. We have worked together for over 20 years and I am very excited that he will be selling our Personal Health Record products and services to retailers, educational institutions and to Veterans."
Dietrich served as Office Depot's Vice President, North American Technology Merchandising and Marketing Group, as well as Vice President of Office Depot's Telecommunications Services Group for more than 10 years, starting in 1993.He directed the company's wireless strategy from analog to digital services and the roll-out of PCS in North America while leading the introduction of wireless services to retail. Dietrich launched PCS services in more than 80 markets in the U.S. and Canada over a five year period.
"From my experience, Personal Health Records represent an ideal product for retail," said Dietrich.MyMedicalRecords is the perfect addition to the service offerings of any retailer because it has all the elements that merchants look for: it provides a highly relevant service for their customers, it provides the opportunity to generate profit from inventory-less services, and it has the ability to drive additional demand through use.In the education sector, MMR products have a multitude of applications that can reduce cost and complexity in student healthcare records management. One perfect application is in the management of student health records associated with extracurricular activities such as sports and performing arts.MMR also would be ideal to add to the student enrollment package for colleges and universities and could even be used as a fundraising service for schools and PTO/PTA organizations."

Arsenal's Giroud satisfied with Montpellier return
Posted: at 8:14 am
Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud was content with his personal performance in last night's Champions League win over former club Montpellier.
The Frenchman supplied the assist for Lukas Podolski to equalise in the 16th minute after Younes Belhanda's opener before Gervinho made it 2-1 to the Gunners for the eventual victory.
Giroud admitted he was happy to return to the Stade de la Mosson to play in front of his old fans and was also satisfied with how he performed on the night.
"I tried not to really think about the context of the match," he told L'Equipe. "I was just so happy to come back here, even if I didn't score.
"I had a decisive assist in our first goal and I was quite satisfied with my own performance.
"We won and now we are in a good position. We remain undefeated and that is perfect for us."
