VP debate impact may be more personal than electoral
Posted: at 5:13 pm
When Rep. Paul Ryan and Vice President Joe Biden square off in Thursday night's vice presidential debate in Danville, Ky., sparks will fly, consultants will fret, and snap polls will deliver snap judgment. Twitter might actually explode. And come November 6, it probably won't make a difference.
Despite screaming headlines predicting a "high-stakes" encounter, the VP candidates can take solace in this, at least: their performance, barring a spectacular implosion or gaffe, is unlikely to affect the outcome of the 2012 election.
The potential impact on Biden and Ryan, however, could be profound.
Alan Schroeder, a professor of journalism at Northeastern University and author of "Presidential Debates: 50 Years of High-Risk TV", argues that the VP debate "has more to do with the legacy for the debater than affecting the outcome of peoples' voting decisions."
Indeed, a look at past vice presidential debates reveals an event that scarcely affects the election at hand but can render a powerful, durable verdict on the sparring understudies.
The stakes may be higher for the 42-year-old Ryan, a young up-and-comer commonly heralded as the vanguard of a new generation of Republican leaders. A strong performance from Ryan would solidify his standing as the GOP's heir-apparent; a tepid performance could tarnish his credibility as a big thinker and derail his national ambition.
But Biden, too, will be watched with an eye to 2016. Despite abundant skepticism among the commentariat, Biden confidantes insist that the loquacious 69-year-old must be seen as a viable presidential candidate four years hence. An aggressive, punchy performance could elevate his stature within the party, quelling doubts about the vice president's age and competence. A feckless night could erase whatever remains of Biden's 2016 currency.
John Sides, a professor of political science at The George Washington University, explains that the debate can be an audition for bigger things: "If a vice-presidential candidate has grander ambitions, their performance as a candidate is one factor that could affect their prospects." Though he argues that "party leaders will look at a VP debate as one data point" in measuring the presidential caliber of rising stars, he cautions, "It's not the only one, or even the most important one."
In the first vice presidential debate of the television era, a 1976 face-off pitting then-Sen. Bob Dole, R-Kan., against then-Sen. Walter Mondale, D-Minn., Dole delivered the night's most memorable attack, scorching Mondale and the Democrats as warmongers: "I figured it up the other day, if we added up the killed and wounded in Democrat wars in this century, it'd be about 1.6 million Americans - enough to fill the city of Detroit."
Dole had developed a reputation for acidity, as Mondale reminded the audience: "Senator Dole has richly earned his reputation as a 'hatchet man' tonight." The "hatchet man" label endured for decades.

Quincy Herald-Whig | Illinois & Missouri News, SportsTight Senate, House races turn snarky and personal
Posted: October 10, 2012 at 8:13 pm
By HENRY C. JACKSON Associated Press
WASHINGTON (AP) - Short on time and tempers, House and Senate candidates in tight races are turning snarky and personal in their attacks on their opponents.
The stakes, and the unpleasantness, are highest in the race for control of the Senate, where Republicans need to gain four seats to win the majority - only three if Republican Paul Ryan becomes vice president and, in his role as Senate president, breaks any tie votes.
In Massachusetts, GOP Sen. Scott Brown witheringly mocks Democrat Elizabeth Warren's claims of Native American heritage. In Montana, Democratic Sen. Jon Tester pummels Rep. Denny Rehberg for suing a local fire department. Nevada's Sen. Dean Heller calls his opponent, Democratic Rep. Shelly Berkley, "the most corrupt" person he's ever met.
Across the land, candidates are launching incendiary attacks on each other in the final, fretful days of an election year colored by margin-of-error races that have refused to budge.
In the battle for control of the Senate, neither Republicans nor Democrats have put away enough seats to tip the balance of power. Republicans are favored to hold onto the House, where Democrats need to net 25 seats to regain control, but both parties want to win as many seats as possible.
Many candidates have maximized the support they can get by selling their own records and accomplishments and are now going negative, seeking to damage an opponent's credentials and depress his or her support. That point arrived long ago in the presidential contest. Down-ballot, things seem to just now be coming to a boil.
The closer the contest, the harsher the attacks.
Take Montana, home to 1 of the nation's closest and most bitter Senate races.
Sniping between Tester and Rehberg over who's the real Montanan and who's beholden to lobbyists turned harsher in the past week after Democrats launched a trio of ads searing Rehberg for suing a local fire company for damage on his land during a blaze. Tester personally took the matter to Rehberg in a face-to-face debate this week.

Schaumburg's Rizzo hoping to run personal best
Posted: October 7, 2012 at 1:19 am
Schaumburg native Patrick Rizzo will be one of the elite athletes in the hunt during Sundays Bank of America Chicago Marathon.
He knows he wont be pushing the lead pace with the Kenyans and others who have clocked in blazing marathon times. But thats OK with Rizzo as hes OK with his steady-as-it-goes approach. Sundays race will be his eighth marathon overall and fourth in Chicago. He looks to continue his progress and set a new personal record.
Anyone who has ever gotten to compete against me knows I am not a very fast runner, Rizzo said. Thankfully I dont need to run very fast in a marathon. I just need to outlast people.
And outlast people Rizzo has. His personal best of 2:13:42 is certainly impressive as far as marathon times go. He clocked that at his most recent marathon the U.S. Olympics Trials in Houston on Jan. 14, 2012 where he finished 13th overall.
In that race, he strategized with his coach Brad Hudson to run conservatively in the first half and left enough in the tank to pick off runners in the second part. At the halfway point, he was in about the top 50, then ran one of the fastest half marathons among the field to climb the charts. He ran nearly even splits 1:06:52 in the first half and 1:06:50 in the second.
Rizzo was thrilled with his performance.
To go (somewhere) from 40th to 50th place at halfway and to finish at 13 was what I thought I would do, Rizzo said. To actually accomplish everything and execute it to a T is such a feeling of triumph. You can prepare for it every time. Preparation can sometimes go flawlessly. The race day does not always collaborate.
The success Rizzo had in his last race will provide momentum for Sundays showdown against some of the fastest runners in the world. Chicago Marathon Executive Race Director Carey Pinkowski calls the field the deepest ever weve had in Chicago and notes he has gone back to the marathon roots by bringing in athletes with impressive track credentials.
Ethiopias Tsegaye Kebede (2:05:18) will be a top contender along with Wesley Korir (2:06:15) of Kenya, who won the 2012 Boston Marathon. Kenyas Levy Matebo is the fastest entrant in the field, with a 2:05:16 performance at the 2011 Frankfurt Marathon. Three-time U.S. Olympian Dathan Ritzenhein (2:09:55) is someone to watch as well.
On the womens side, Russian Liliya Shobukhova looks to capture her unprecedented fourth consecutive Chicago Marathon. She ran the third-fastest time in history (2:18:20) to win last years race. Kenyas Lucy Kabuu (2:19:34) and Atsede Baysa (2:22:04) of Ethiopia will push her. The top female American runner is Dot McMahan (2:31:48).

Intel pushes Atom for 'personal cloud'
Posted: October 6, 2012 at 10:14 am
SAN FRANCISCOIntel Corp. is pushing some of its latest Atom processors for use in network-attached storage (NAS) devices that deliver "personal cloud" storage to small businesses and consumers.
Intel Thursday (Oct. 4) launched an Atom-based storage platform combining multimedia capabilities, energy efficiency and performance for NAS devices. The platform, based on the Atom D2550 or Atom D2500, is billed as a solution for small businesses and consumers grappling with exploding storage needs in a secure, accessible way.

"With the huge number of devices coming out, from traditional laptopswhich have been with us for decadesto tablets to smartphones, the opportunities for consuming data are huge," said David Tuhy, general manager of Intel's storage division, at a briefing here Thursday.
There are already NAS devices using previous generations of Atom on the market. But with the launch of its Atom-based storage platform Thursday, Intel trotted out new NAS systems using it made by customers Asustor, QNAP and Thecus. More firms are expected to launch systems based on the platform in the near future, Intel said.

Intel markets its higher-end Xeon processors for bigger data storage applications like servers. But, for NAS devices, which typically have two or four hard drives, Atom offers sufficient capability, Tuhy said.
"We think we have a really compelling price point solution with Atom in this category," Tuhy said.
The market for NAS devices is expected to be worth more than $6 billion by 2014, according to IDC.
Intel said its Atom-based storage solution features built-in hardware acceleration for HD content (video surveillance and playback as well as media playback), support for multiple operating sytems, including Microsoft Windows and Linux, and support for software-based RAID data safeguards so that files are recoverable even if a hard-drive fails. The solution also offers scalable I/O connectivity to support four to six SATA drives with hot-plug capability of up to 14 USB ports and integrated support for digital display and dual display, as well as up to 4 GB of main memory.
