PERFORMANCE/TOUR: Bernadette Peters at the Valley Arts Center
Posted: at 8:49 am
There are singers and there are actresses; there are entertainers and there are stars. And then, there is Bernadette Peters. On Saturday night, the nonpareil Broadway artist turned the Valley Performing Arts Center into her own personal salon, with magical results.
From first entrance in a glittering lilac gown that looked as if she'd been poured into it, the diminutive Peters held the capacity crowd in thrall. Launching a jazzy Let Me Entertain You" with an insinuating focus toward the front row, Peters moved on to No One Is Alone" from Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods," and her delicately inward intensity hushed the house. Thereafter, she could do no wrong.
Visually, Peters has vaulted time with decades to spareher physical maneuvers atop musical director Marvin Laird's piano during Fever" were especially deliciousand her comic skills are undiminished, as when selling There Is Nothing Like a Dame" to the men on the aisle. Vocally, the ineluctable timbre remains essentially intact, any loss of belting power or metrical freedom trumped by a near-legit purity in her upper register and a still potent ability to locate a song's emotional content.
Musical theater material dominated the program, interspersed with delightfully spontaneous patter and gracious introductions of each member of the ace on-stage orchestra, including former Mouseketeer Cubby O'Brien. Her charming Mister Snow" from Carousel" and heart-stopping Some Enchanted Evening" from South Pacific" (both Rodgers and Hammerstein) were representative poles of Peters' art, but most of the program went to Sondheim, whose songs Peters has few peers at interpreting. Acknowledging her recently ended turn in the Broadway revival of Follies" (which is headed to L.A. minus Peters), she delivered In Buddy's Eyes" and an astonishingly intense Losing My Mind" with indelible character truth.
And her penultimate Being Alive" and exquisitely intimate Goodbye for Now" conveyed the axiomatic, one-on-one communication with an audience that defines a great dramatic chanteuse, and that certainly describes Bernadette Peters.

Jinny Ditzler: Personal Transformation: What's Motivating You?
Posted: at 8:49 am
There's so much negativity flying around these days it's understandable and perhaps pardonable that even you get caught in its grasp. When it takes over, we quickly forget our worthwhile and meaningful motivations, and before we know it become part of the problem.
For example, the number of people involved in the blame game has reached astronomical levels. I can't believe what's happening between our leaders and would-be leaders! Few have much to contribute other than their latest sound bite about what's wrong with their opponents. Others jump on the bandwagon and start pointing fingers at them in print, on television and radio -- what a performance, Mr. Limbaugh!
But wait, what did I just do there? Wake up, Jinny: Is your true motivation to use this post to make others wrong and blame them? It sure looks like it, doesn't it? See how easy it is? Worse yet, I've just become part of the problem by adding to the poison that's pervading an environment in which too many good folks are already stressed, frustrated, unhappy, anxious, and afraid.
Becoming Aware of the Biggest Negative Motivations
Being a good human being -- the one you long to be -- seems to be getting harder and harder. You start the day with the best of intentions, and before you know it one of the tempting and destructive negative drivers has taken over:
I could go on, but you get the idea and probably have others to add to the list. I'm so disappointed in myself when I fail to catch myself in time. When I finally do -- maybe in retrospect, hours later -- I realize I've hurt someone, added to their burden, made them miserable, and increased their stress.
What's Possible?
Although I still fall into the pit too often, I'm starting to feel a sense of mastery over this costly, costly behavior. It is possible to gain control of our days and our destinies in ways beyond our ability to imagine.
I'm too embarrassed to tell you the pain I've caused others by forgetting who I am and what I'm here for. However, I will tell you that I'm learning. The results are making a positive impact on the difference I'm making to others and in the quality of my life.
I'm finding out that it's possible to step out of the rut of being right and to break the habits of a lifetime of being asleep at the switch and being part of the problem. This article is the first in a series about personal transformation, in which I'll be sharing what I've learned (and am trying to learn) about being more of the person that I know myself to be.

Ennis settles for pentathlon silver in Istanbul (despite being told she'd won stunning gold)

PUBLISHED: 06:55 EST, 9 March 2012 | UPDATED: 15:49 EST, 9 March 2012
The agony was slow to dawn on Jessica Ennis. She celebrated as the screen flashed her name up with the numeral 1 next to it and, then, as the maths was slowly, agonisingly calculated her position was brought up to date and she was declared second.
A joyous smile gave way fleetingly to disappointment. But, ever the professional and positive by nature, she gathered her composure in a flash and the grin returned.
It had been a typically brave performance from the poster girl of the London Olympics, but nothing like what had been billed ahead of the World Indoor Championships pentathlon.
Contrasting emotions: Jessica Ennis thinks she's won... but the scoreboard is then reversed (below)
This was meant to be a showdown between Ennis, the smiling little brunette and the stern statuesque Russian, Tatyana Chernova. But Chernova faded almost from the start. She finished fifth, a shadow of the woman who won the gold medal ahead of Ennis at the World Championships in Daegu last summer.
No, it was the Ukrainian Natallia Dobrynska, the 2008 Olympic champion, who pipped Ennis with an indoor world record of 5,013. Ennis scored 4,965, a personal best and national record.
It came down to the last event the 800m and the facts and figures did not look propitious for Ennis going into it. She needed to run 6.48sec faster than Dobrynska to prevail.
Naturally, as at Daegu, Ennis gave it everything. She won the race stylishly but finished only a fraction over three seconds ahead of her rival. Enough to give her a personal best 2min 8.09sec and second place ahead of Austra Skujyte of Lithuania.

SPOTLIGHT
Translated as "my own history of dance", La Dance, Une Histoire a Ma Facon is a solo performance by Beau Geste Company's Dominique Boivin. The work is an expression of his personal relationship to the great masters of dance with a humorous twist. Guru spoke with him ahead of his performance which is part of French-Thai cultural fest La Fete:
HOW DID YOU FIRST BECOME INTERESTED IN DANCE?
When I was 16, I was madly in love with life and being on stage. Before that I took dance classes without even being aware of being in contact with a sort of artistic expression. Finding myself suddenly in love with life and being able to articulate it through movement literally threw me in the role of the actor and the interpreter. It was at that moment I felt the force of this art and the possibilities of dance as a form of expression.
WHAT IS YOUR PERFORMANCE ABOUT?
The show is about the history of dance and how Western dance has evolved. It is a journey into the past in attempt to shed light on the present and perhaps the future because there is a desire to connect. Like all other art forms, dance cannot avoid time; there are trends, tendencies.
WHAT ASPECT OF HISTORY ARE YOU ATTEMPTING TO PRESENT?
The question is to identify the situation of dance in France and take a look at its evolution. My job is to answer this question and remain as integrated as possible, but not as an historian. Of course I hope that the public, after having seen this solo, will realise that dance, like any other mode of representation, evolves with the time.
IS DANCE UNIVERSAL?
One might think that dance does not need translation to the extent that it doesn't involve words. However, different cultures have their own readings of the body. Today the world is changing fast and information flows more easily, thanks to the internet. Thailand is a large country with a strong culture. With this solo, I am sharing with the public of Bangkok a way of re-examining history and also the dance.

Personal Training Business Workshop Brings Resistance Band Training Expert Dave Schmitz and Other Top Fitness Pros to …
Posted: at 9:41 pm
Fitness Revolution in Napa will be hosting a fitness business workshop, featuring resistance band training expert and founder of Resistance Band Training Systems, Dave Schmitz.
Napa, CA (PRWEB) March 08, 2012
The workshop will provide hands on instruction geared toward both helping fitness businesses grow and improve their training techniques. The fitness experts plan to discuss a variety of topics concerning aspects of training and fitness marketing.
All personal trainers face two main concerns, said Pat Rigsby, CEO of Fitness Consulting Group, the group organizing the event. The first is that they are constantly trying to improve as trainers, and the second is that they want to find ways to grow their business.
By bringing together leaders in the fitness community, the Elite Training Workshop seeks to address both concerns. One of the fitness industry leaders appearing at the event is resistance band training expert Dave Schmitz.
Schmitz, recently named one of the 100 Most Influential People in Health & Fitness, has decades of experience training athletes with resistance bands. His company, Resistance Band Training Systems, sells bands, band workouts and other training products.
The Band Man, as Schmitz is affectionately called, will be presenting two lectures. The first focuses on using resistance bands as a way to position oneself in the personal training market. The second goes into detail on how to get better at training with bands.
All kinds of athletes benefit from resistance band training, Schmitz says. I developed bands as a way to boost performance, but their roots are in injury rehab and prevention. Resistance band workouts are safe, fun, and effective. Best of all, anybody can do them.
Joining Dave Schmitz will be President of Robertson Training Systems Mike Robertson, and Mens Health contributors B.J. Gaddour and Robert Remedios. Remedios has trained professionals and Olympians, while also authoring books on strength and power training.
The fitness experts will be presenting on a number of different subjects, ranging from fitness-specific topics like strength and core training, to business topics like how to run a fitness boot camp.

Messi shrugs off personal achievement
Posted: at 10:39 pm
Lionel Messi shrugged off another night of personal achievement to focus on helping Barcelona into the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
The Argentinian became the first man to score five times in a game in Europe's premier club competition in another sensational solo display as title holders Barca eased into the last eight with a 7-1 thrashing of Bayer Leverkusen.
Pep Guardiola's side were at their unplayable best with young substitute Cristian Tello also scoring twice as they advanced 10-2 on aggregate.
Messi, 24, was the undoubted star but he was quick to play down his own role to concentrate on the bigger picture.
He said: "The most important thing tonight is that all these goals we scored take us one step closer to winning the Champions League, which is our objective.
"We went out there wanting to ensure qualification for the quarter-finals and we achieved that.
"I have always said that it's fantastic when things come off for you and you play well, but only if you meet your aims for the match. That's what happened against Leverkusen.
"The team played very, very well, the performance had some beautiful moments and we scored lots of goals."
Messi's modesty failed to deflect attention away from another magnificent display.
The FIFA World Player of the Year earlier became the first man to score four times in two Champions League games - he also hit four against Arsenal in 2010 - before adding a fifth with a crisp left-foot finish from the edge of the area.

Last nights haul plus the recent hat-trick for Argentina against Switzerland means Messi has scored 14 goals in his last five games for club and country. Its all about enjoying the moment; from how it went with Argentina the other week to how its going right now for my club.
The sweetest part of it, for me, is that the team continues its run of form at the moment, winning games in style; thats the way to go as far as we can in the Champions League.
As for the draws for the next rounds, I dont care which opponents we end up facing or when. Any club which has reached this stage is only here because it has done its work very well, and whoever we draw is going to be tough opposition.
Barca team-mate Cesc Fabregas claimed Messi is the best player ever to play the game. The midfielder said: You can expect anything from Leo. He is the best player in history; we have never seen anyone like him. He didnt play at the weekend and he wanted to do well. He enjoys being on the pitch and we are happy to have him.
