McAfee shifts cloud security focus to email, personal data
Posted: June 11, 2012 at 9:12 pm
Summary: McAfee is refocusing its cloud security platform to hone in on three areas: email, Web and identity.
McAfee is upgrading its Cloud Security Platform with some new features intended to address the three primary channels of traffic, which are defined as email, Web and identity.
Phil Hochmuth, program manager of IDCs Security Products service, defended these choices in prepared remarks, asserting that identity, Web and email security components are critical as enterprise IT customers deploy both on-premise and off-premise Cloud-based solutions over the next several years.
Protection for mobile workers is a big theme here, in particular. Along with an identity manager that extends policy control decisions to both in-network and mobile devices, McAfee is also touting its Client Proxy for providing authentication and redirection of traffic from off-network laptops to a McAfee Web Protection solution.
These improvements might come in handy to alleviate woes about sensitive data and security related to BYOD trends as well as remote workers.
Overall, the framework is designed to enable business customers to extend their security and policy enforcement into the cloud, along with providing real-time protection and data about threats to all verticals, including the three aforementioned channels.

Hamilton leaves behind personal problems to take victory at Montreal

The rest of the Formula One field take note: Lewis Hamilton is back, and he feels good in his skin again.

After a 2011 season marked by personal troubles a very public break-up with girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger, and tensions surrounding the firing of his manager father, Anthony and several ragged outings on track that saw Hamilton finish a disappointing fifth overall, things are different this year for the 2008 world champion, both on and off the track.
Well, Ive always just said that I was waiting to try and get all the pieces of the puzzle into the right place, getting my life into gear, getting things organized, said a smiling Hamilton, who was relaxed and comfortable talking about his personal turnaround.
I had a lot of bad years. There were certain things that werent right. It took a lot longer to get them right and sorted. I think probably the relationship with my family has made the biggest difference.
Hamilton wouldnt go into detail when asked to elaborate and and only said: Its just better. It was okay before, but its just incredible now.
Scherzinger is also back in his life, cheering him on from the McLaren hospitality area during Sundays 70-lap race at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, where the reinvigorated 27-year-old McLaren driver got back onto the top step of the podium. It was a cool, calculated performance reminiscent of his maiden F1 win on the same track in 2007.
Coincidentally, his first victory of 2012 came in the race where he surpassed his hero and F1 legend Ayrton Senna in starts with the famed McLaren team. Three-time world champion Senna raced 96 times for McLaren between 1988 and 1993. He died in a high-speed crash in the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix at Imola while driving for Williams.
While Hamilton hadnt won until Sunday, the season hasnt exactly been terrible for the British driver. The McLaren ace had two poles and four podiums in six starts prior to Montreal, where his win vaulted him from fourth to first in the championship standings. He now has 88 points. Ferraris Fernando Alonso is second with 86, with Red Bulls Sebastian Vettel third on 85. Drivers get 25 points for a win.

Credit Sesame Secures $12 Million, Sees Tremendous Growth in Helping Consumers Better Manage Personal Credit and …
Posted: at 9:12 pm
SUNNYVALE, CA--(Marketwire -06/11/12)- Today, Credit Sesame, the free service that helps consumers easily monitor their credit and loans in one place and save money on debt, announced that it has raised $12 million in new funding. Globespan Capital Partners led the round with participation from Credit Sesame's existing investors, Menlo Ventures and Inventus Capital. The latest round of financing will support Credit Sesame's expansion to reach millions of Americans.
U.S. households carry $14 trillion of debt in mortgages, credit cards, consumer loans, and student loans. Yet the average consumer lacks an easy, objective tool to help them make smart financial decisions. By providing consumers with instant, free access to credit scores and critical financial information, Credit Sesame meets this need and goes a step beyond. Credit Sesame's proprietary analytics engine analyzes a consumer's credit profile against thousands of available financial products in the market to find solutions to help consumers save money and meet their individual financial goals.
"As investors, we believe that Credit Sesame has tremendous potential to help Americans achieve a better financial future," said Daniel Leff, Ph.D., Globespan Capital Partners. "The company is solving a real problem for consumers and has already demonstrated great success in helping its users simplify the daunting task of understanding their comprehensive credit and debt profile, and how they can improve their finances with little or no effort. We are happy to fuel the company's growth and help Credit Sesame realize its goal of reaching millions of Americans."
Since its public launch, Credit Sesame has experienced tremendous user growth and now oversees more than $22 billion in consumer loans and debt on its personal finance platform. Credit Sesame currently finds $175 million a month in savings for its users. As a result, nearly half (48%) of the users now frequent the site 2- 3 times a month to stay abreast of their finances and realize ways to stop overpaying on their debt. The company's performance is also well reflected in its revenue growth, which has quadrupled quarter over quarter.
"Credit Sesame helps consumers better manage the critical part of their finances they often neglect: their credit and debt," said Adrian Nazari, founder and CEO of Credit Sesame. "While consumers are out investing countless dollars and hours, trying to time the market for a slightly better return on their investments, we're giving them the edge back home, making sure they're not incurring thousands of extra dollars in cost each year on their loans and credit needs."
Credit Sesame will use the funding to expand its market reach and to continue investing in its patent-pending analytic tools developed by Stanford University scientists and vetted by top banks. The company plans on hiring talent in marketing and engineering and enhancing its mobile app, the #1 free credit score app in the iTunes store.

Tate wins hurdles, LSU Track teams in title contention on Day 3
Posted: at 5:12 am
From LSU Sports
DES MOINES, Iowa Lady Tiger senior Cassandra Tate kicked off Friday's finals by taking home the NCAA title in the 400-meter hurdles with a personal-best performance to lead a point barrage by the Lady Tigers as they totaled 40 points with their five scoring opportunities on the third day of the 2012 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships being held at Drake Stadium.
Senior Rebecca Alexander and juniors Kimberlyn Duncan and Charlene Lipsey also enjoyed silver-medal winning performances in their respective events, while senior Semoy Hackett captured a bronze medal for her effort as the Lady Tigers wrapped up the day in a 40-40 tie with the Oregon Ducks.
LSU and Oregon have emerged as the leading contenders for the women's team title this weekend as they head into Saturday's NCAA Championships finale at Drake Stadium.
The Tigers have also positioned themselves for a run at the men's team championship on the strength of a bronze-medal finish by senior Kyron Blaise and the scoring efforts by senior Michael Lauro and freshman Aaron Ernest to highlight Friday's final-round action at the NCAA Championships.
The Tigers have tallied 23 points in three days of competition as they will head into Saturday's finale with the fourth spot in the team standings, trailing Florida (36), Virginia Tech (28) and Arizona (24).
"This group really understands what it means to make a run at the national championship," said LSU head coach Dennis Shaver. "They had an attitude about it today to go out there and get it done. I am proud with the way both of our teams competed again today. They went out there and did exactly what they had to do to give themselves an opportunity to compete for the team title tomorrow.
"To have Cassandra Tate go out there in the very first event and win the (400) hurdles was huge. That just sparked our team today. The other girls in the warm up area getting ready to compete saw it and really got even more excited to go out there and run themselves. What a great way to start the day."
Tate led off with a bang as she became the fourth Lady Tiger all-time to be crowned the NCAA champion in the 400-meter hurdles as she sprinted past UCLA's Turquoise Thompson over the final hurdle and set a new personal record of 55.22 seconds to take the title. Thompson finished as the NCAA runner-up to Tate with a time of 55.28, while Tennessee's Ellen Wortham took third place in 55.82.
While running in Lane 4, Tate ran strong down the backstretch and overtook Wortham in Lane 6 at the 250-meter mark before pulling even with Thompson to her outside in Lane 5 down the homestretch. That is when she outlasted Thompson over the final hurdle in a sprint to the finish line to take the victory.

MIT Blackjack Guru Launches Personal Productivity Platform tenXer
Posted: at 3:19 am
SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
tenXer, the technology company redefining personal productivity, today announced the launch of the tenXer platform, designed to revolutionize human capital management from the bottom up. Using measurable metrics to power game-like and social motivation systems, tenXer produces dashboards, leader boards and activity streams that are all designed to make employees better at their jobs, regardless of industry.
tenXer CEO and Founder Jeff Ma is the inspiration for both the movie 21 and the book Bringing Down the House by acclaimed author, Ben Mezrich. Ma created the concept for tenXer last fall when he saw a huge opportunity in the human capital management industry. tenXer focuses first and foremost on the everyday individual worker; the employee opposed to upper management. The company built a proprietary, data-driven platform that enables employees to better understand and improve their work performance, allowing them to be more intrinsically motivated and therefore more productive.
Ma has been a pioneer in the use of data in both the gambling and sports industries, and his recent book, The House Advantage, takes these lessons to the business world. After selling his most recent company, Citizen Sports, to Yahoo!, Ma has been fascinated by the concept of how data can be used to motivate people and change their behavior in the work environment. tenXer takes advantage of the shift toward cloud-based services that already collect large amounts of data about what people are doing at work. Accessing this data is becoming increasingly easier and tenXer is the first company to turn this data into motivation.
We are building a platform that allows any employee to easily analyze and understand their daily work habits, said tenXer Chief Executive Officer and Founder Jeff Ma. We believe that this is the backbone to creating a real revolution in human capital management. In our opinion, the feedback loop at work is broken. It is too infrequent, too subjective and too opaque. Our goal is to use measurable metrics to power instantaneous, objective and transparent feedback.
When many executives look at their financial reports, they too often look past one of the largest expenses payroll. Getting smarter productivity out of their workforce is paramount. But often their efforts are ineffective because they are top down and seen as overheard or are too subjective, explained Kevin Compton of Radar Partners, an investor in tenXer. This is exactly what Jeff Ma and his team of tenXers have set out to fix. They are building a powerful tool to help all of us become better at what we do by using objective metrics and intrinsic motivation.
Motivation comes in the form of graphs, charts and activity streams which allow the user to analyze their past performance and see how their current performance is tracking toward their future goals. In addition, the user is able to see how they rank versus their peers in a variety of different lead boards spurring healthy and fun competition.
Currently, tenXer integrates with workforce tools like GitHub, Pivotal Tracker, Jira, Google Mail/Calendar and Phabricator. The company plans to quickly add non-engineering tools like Twitter and Zen Desk.
About tenXer
tenXer is the company redefining personal productivity by building a platform that allows any employee to analyze their daily work habits. tenXer has raised money from investors including Radar Partners, True Ventures, Google Ventures, Webb Investment Network (Maynard Webb), Social and Capital Partnership (Chamath Palihapitiya) and Founders Fund Angel Brian Singerman. tenXer is privately-held and headquartered in San Francisco, California.
