Ten Guideposts to Self-Empowerment – Possibility Coaches

Posted: October 10, 2015 at 6:43 pm

without comments

Self empowerment is recognizing that within each of us is the capacity and ability to live from our natural state of being. The main characteristic of this state is peace. Simply put, your power is in your peace.

After many years of assisting hundreds of individuals as Life Coaches and Relationship Coaches, we have been able to identify what we feel are the ten essential guideposts or pillars to successfully achieving self empowerment.

Understand, that these guideposts are not steps to self empowerment. They are more like a checklist of requirements that you want to fulfill and complete to become empowered. There is no specific order for which to apply them. In fact, they can be processes you use together, simultaneously or separately, one at a time.

We call these ten aspects or attributes of self empowerment guideposts because self empowerment is a process. Each guidepost allows you to know if you are living from a position of empowerment. In other words, whether or not you are at peace.

So here they are. They are in no specific order. Apply each of them as tools and applications to create a greater sense of empowerment in your life. By mastering these guideposts, through your willingness to change, we guarantee that you will witness both subtle and extreme shifts in your life situations and conditions, as well as in your internal state of consciousness.

Guidepost #1: Recognition Recognition is about seeing to who, what, when and where you give your power away to. You may give it to other people, to situations and experiences or all of the above. It means you are giving external factors permission to control your emotional well-being. Once you recognize your participation in this disempowering process you can begin to break the cycle.

Recognition is also about seeing the talents and gifts you possess. If you are waiting for the world to recognize you, you may be waiting a very long time. You possess within you unique qualities and attributes that can guide you to feel empowered. Recognize them now!

Guidepost #2: Awareness Awareness is similar to recognition, yet it goes a little deeper. Awareness is the acknowledgment that you do disengage and disconnect from the power within you. It is also about defining why you disempower yourself in the first place.

Most important, the guidepost of awareness is about knowing that it is quite possible to take your power back at any time you decide to do so.

Guidepost #3: Responsibility To become empowered, it is imperative that you know exactly who and what you are responsible for in your life. When you do not know this parameter you are likely to live life as a guilt-ridden victim of circumstances. First and foremost, take responsibility for you own life and begin to feel more empowered. For a more detailed explanation on responsibility see our blog on this subject.

Guidepost #4: Releasing the Past Self empowerment, which is inner peace, can only happen in the present moment or now. When you hold grudges, criticize, judge and have a long list of regrets laced with guilt, you can never be at peace. Depression is the number one symptom of someone living in the past. Be open to letting go and forgiving. If you are challenged doing this on your own, team up with a professional who has been through the process and can assist you.

Guidepost #5: Releasing Worry About the Future Where the future and self empowerment meet is a fine line in the sand. As Life Coaches and Spiritual Teachers, here is how Chris and I see the future: you can plan for it; however, you must be open to giving up attempting to control it. Life, and what tomorrow brings you, is and always will be a mystery. Accept this truth; otherwise, you will continue to be stressed, anxious and fearful of tomorrow. Surrender to what is now and what is yet to be. Life requires risk-taking. Be open to flying with the eagle and not walking with the turkeys.

Guidepost #6: Trust Trust is a guidepost that moves you into the role of being a decision-maker for you and your life. Be willing to make choices and stand by them. If you do not like the results, make different choices. Trust is about having faith in the process. The process of life is always about creativity, expansion and who you are becoming. When you trust, you become more of who you authentically are. With trust you become grounded and empowered.

Guidepost #7: Cultivate a New Mindset Cultivating a new mindset is about your willingness to grow and expand as a human being. Observe your current, dominant thoughts, beliefs and habits. Do they serve you in a positive manner or do they keep you stuck? Cultivating a new mindset is also about acknowledging that you can control your mind and that it does not have to be the other way around. In our seminars and coaching sessions, we share a variety of mindset changing techniques that can move anyone toward a state of well-being and self-empowerment.

Guidepost #8: Share Your Greatness We have concluded that the process of Life goes beyond giving and receiving. It is all about sharing. If you are withholding your gifts and talents from the world and yourself, then you are preventing you from experiencing inner peace. Greatness is an active state that requires expression. Share your greatness! See greatness in others! Allow them to share with you.

Guidepost #9: Live in Alignment with Truth Most people live their life aligned to the myth that putting myself first is selfish and self-centered. As Life Coaches, we say, as long as you dont put you first you will never live in alignment with your truth and subsequently never be self-empowered. If you treat yourself like a second class citizen, how could you ever expect anyone else to treat you differently! Putting yourself first does not include doing so at the expense or harm of another person. It is about leading by example and doing what makes your heart sing.

Guidepost #10: Forgiveness All the guideposts we have listed are essential measuring sticks for inner peace and self-empowerment. If one guidepost was to standout above and beyond all the others in significance it would have to be forgiveness. Without real forgiveness, real peace remains elusive.

Real forgiveness is about forgiving others. More so, it is about forgiving yourself. Each of the first nine guideposts must contain a component of real forgiveness within them to activate the state of self empowerment. That is why Chris and I call them guideposts and that is why we say they can be practiced simultaneously or in any order you choose.

The purpose of these guideposts is to assist you to live an empowered life. Remember, self-empowerment is about knowing you never lost or could lose your power. You may have simply convinced yourself that you are powerless and that your happiness and peace resides elsewhere in some future universe or dimension.

In our practice, we have witnessed radical shifts in individuals when they have followed the Ten Guideposts to Self-Empowerment. We challenge you to print this blog and commit to following at least one guidepost today.

This section extensively uses a font called Papyrus. For greater viewing pleasure, download the font here

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.

We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?

You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.

We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it is in everyone.

And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."

"Over the years that I have been associated with Takara, I have marveled at her abilities to access energetics that reactivate the harmonics of love, trust, truth and balance within the lives of all those that are guided to be in her presence. She tenaciously supports and honors the upliftment of the human experience and constantly accesses spiritual wisdom that allows for the balancing of mind, body and spirit. Her joyful presence is a blessing to all. She continually strives to perfect and share her healing techniques and abilities. She holds a place of certainty that life can and will be lived through "ease and grace" as each of us steps into our full potential and truth." - Millie Stefani, Spiritual Advisor, Color Sound Healer, Co-Founder of Forchianna

I know that sounds truly absurd.

And if you had said that to me 20 years ago, I would have thought you were completely nuts. But I didn't know then what I know now. I had not yet experienced the level of personal growth and energy healing that I have now experienced and share with others.

My name is Takara and I am a much happier and more fulfilled person than I used to be.

Most of the positive changes in my life happened because of my relationship with my true (or higher) self and The Divine Presence (God) made possible through this crazy connection I have with dolphins.

For a long time I was pretty unhappy.

From outward appearances I had all the things most people think they want out of life - a great career, more than enough cash, typically a great guy, wonderful friends, Lear jets, limo rides in Manhattan, travel to exotic places, and more. Deep down I wasn't happy and I was hiding that fact even from myself.

But just like most people, when you truly aren't happy, eventually your soul finds a way to show that to you.

I affectionately call that profound moment the "metaphysical 2 x 4 up side the head."

It involves a great loss, or death, of something you hold dear - a relationship, a job, your health, or a loved one. And once you have experienced this loss, you can no longer go on pretending that your life is working.

It is these magical moments that offer the greatest opportunity for profound change.

So when the opportunity knocked, I grabbed onto it for dear life. I did things, tried things, and learned things that I had never even considered previously. And I took up a quest to become my highest potential - whole, happy, and free.

I was after the Holy Grail of my own magnificence.

The tales of my personal and spiritual unfolding seem practically endless. Many of my spiritual adventures are available in my articles and the various books I have written.

In my quest for personal and spiritual growth and magnificence, I've done native american sweat lodge, firewalk, mantra meditations, guided journeys, and vision quest. I read piles of books, attended many workshops and seminars, experienced hands on energy healing and other private sessions, and a whole host of other things I felt intuitively guided to pursue. Some were easy. Others were definitely not.

Finally one day while I was doing a guided meditation, dolphins just spontaneously showed up in my mind's eye. I giggled and cried and finally felt like I had truly found "home" and "my true path."

It is a path of joy and laughter.

And it involves being completely enveloped in a loving, healing energy.

That dolphin connection to the Divine has opened up for me some amazing things. And now my job is to share with you what I have learned and experienced - so that you too can have direct access to higher wisdom, insight, healing, Oneness and joy.

"Your BOOK IS FABULOUS! Blessings for sharing with us your beautiful connecting Dolphin Spiral. I noticed an immediate connection to my Dolphins, I am closely connected and this heightened my awareness." - Kennette

(Get your free copy of the eBook Kennette is referring to when you get the Magnificent U Starter Kit.)

Your information is safe with us. Our List is NEVER shared or sold!

Through my free ebooks, articles and newsletters, I offer insight and an introduction to a new way of thinking and a glimpse into the energetics that I make available.

My email in-box is often flooded with messages from people thrilled to have found one of my websites and to experience my words. (Read over 100 Testimonials about my work here).

Dancing Dolphin Essences, my books, workshops, and the long distance energy healing sessions I offer immerse you more fully into the depth, breadth, and expansiveness of wisdom, healing, and consciousness I am making available to you.

Joy: The Experience takes it all to an entirely new level.

Spirituality, Oneness, the Divine, and Enlightenment are things that you experience, not some logical mental process.

You can read a million books, attend workshop after workshop, and spend hours contemplating the meaning of life. But until you experience being enveloped in love, feeling the Divine, and at one with the Universe and all things, you do not truly "know" those things.

My presence and the divine healing energies I work with offer a doorway to those experiences that is a lot easier than thinking you are going to pass out from the heat in a sweat lodge, less painful than your hands becoming completely rigid in a rebirthing session, and not nearly as scary or intimidating as doing a firewalk or riding a horse bareback and blindfolded.

Those were all interesting and invigorating when I did them, but I don't find myself drawn to repeat those experiences again.

As I love to say . . .

The Self Empowerment Guide

Posted: September 16, 2015 at 5:46 pm

without comments

Here is a look at some of the information from the guide. Enjoy!

Let's start with the levels of empowerment.

There are essentially four levels of empowerment.

Physical Empowerment Emotional Empowerment Mental Empowerment Spiritual Empowerment

I have included a fifth level. Financial Empowerment. I feel that financial empowerment is a combination of several of the others and want to give people additional tools to help achieve it for their own help and to help their family.

Physical Empowerment

Lets take a look at the aspects of physical empowerment. Your life, your health, your physical environment. All of the physical things around you both living and nonliving.

How are you going to get what is out of balance into balance?

First off what do you want to change? Your weight perhaps? The way you look?

Of course there is diet and exercise. What about balancing acid and base? How about conscious and unconscious eating?

When you learn more about how to be aware and how to be more observant, then when you ask yourself "How can I change the way I look and feel?" You will have a system to help make some changes.

I was at a friends house recently. One person came in, sat down and proceeded to finish off half a bowl of potato chips. I tried to stop her by calling her name a couple times in an attempt to wake her.

She stopped with eyes wide open and she woke up to what she was doing to herself. She was as shocked at what she was doing as she was that someone was calling her name.

People walk around in a state of sleep. They do things like a robot on automatic pilot. After a while they look in the mirror and say "Oh my gosh, what happened?" Its time to wake up before it becomes too late to really live.

Emotional Empowerment

What does your life feel like? What factors are preventing you from getting out of that chair and into a different state of being?

The first thing you have to look at is, do you have control over your emotions or do they have control over you. Achieving the balance is the key. Even if you have no emotions, it means that you are way out of balance. How can you generate happiness? How do you remove the barriers to having a happier more balanced life? When you say, "I want to be happy", what does that mean? How can your world give you something unless you define it?

Think about all the things you wish to change about your life. How do you neutralize the bad things? How can you draw in more of the positive "life force increasing" events and things into your life? How can I achieve peace of mind?

Emotions flow, thoughts flow, your life flows. When we learn how to adjust the flow we can use what is a natural process to enhance our lives and the lives of many others.

Stress puts a negative effect on our bodies. Once we learn how to eliminate stress at the source then we have more energy for our own health. There are many resources for stress management. I am going to give you one for preemptive stress elimination. You can remove stress at its source by taking some action towards eliminating the factors that cause stress.

Mental Empowerment

Feed your body feed your head. Let's take an honest look at is what you are allowing to go into your head. If you eat bad food you will have a bad body. If you feed your head with bad images, bad words, and bad thoughts you will get a bad head. Sounds simple enough?

Would you like to know a little more about the power you have over your thoughts and body?

Try this on for size.

Here is an experiment. 1. Close your eyes 2. Visualize biting into a lemon. 3. Remember the sour taste and texture. 4. Count to 10 while thinking about the lemon. 5. Is your mouth watering?

Now think about this for a second. Is there really the bite of a lemon in your mouth? Did your body react though? Of course it did. Look at the command you have over your body just by thinking.

What are the bad thoughts and images doing to you?

In the Self Empowerment Guide, there are several easy to use techniques to counter the constant bombardment of thoughts and images that continue to give you dis-ease. Do you like the discomfort that these thoughts and situations give you?

I didnt think so.

Your thoughts can either help you or hurt you. You can learn to change your thoughts and change your life for the better.

Spiritual Empowerment

Would you like to align your life with the positive things just outside your current reach?

Here is a reminder of things about you.

You are an infinite being who decided came down to this place and this body to endure the hardships and enjoyable times. Why did you do this? You might ask. It is so you can evolve as a soul and by evolving as a soul, connected to all of the rest of us, we are all evolving.

There are the things we evolve from and the things we don't evolve from. When we have examples of hardship around us it is our choice to decide what we do with them and how we grow from them. It is also our choice to move those experiences away from us as well. Even when we complain about how hard things are, we are given an opportunity to evolve from them. There is always free will as well as choice even when we feel or have forgotten that we truly have it. There is even the choice to remember that you have free will.

Take a look around you at the people around you. Who are your friends, confidants, your mentors and your students?

Why are they here?

They are here to assist you in your growth and evolution. Deep inside they understand this and willingly participate in helping you create the situations you need for the maximum amount of growth that you can handle.

Whether you chose to see this or not is very truly up to you. Not seeing or not believing a thing is there is your choice as well. The sooner you come to the realization that we are all creators of our world and co-creators of our world it will be easier to understand that putting effort into evolving will help not only ourselves but all of us. All of us have been given the gift of free will. Making an effort to improving our lives and the lives of others is a wonderful choice to act upon.

If you truly feel it is not worth the effort, how about doing it because you are going to help that little girl on the swing set? What about that little boy playing in the sand box? How about the friend or family member who just needs a push in the right direction. That animal who is wondering where its next meal might come from. Empowering yourself and working on your evolution sends a rippling effect to all of us. You are worth it and so are we.

We are all truly courageous individuals to take on this evolution on behalf of all of us.

This is a beautiful thing.

Authors note: I wrote the above when my daughters asked me why we are here. There are a lot of times we don't understand what our lifes purpose is or why we are living. With some effort we can find our own answers to these questions and start living self empowered lives. Thank you. - Jase Peck

Financial Self Empowerment

In the Self Empowerment Guide we have a section dedicated to generating abundance. We want you to learn how to attract money and abundance into your life. The author has taught how to attract abundance classes for over 15 years. In his abundance class he gives an offer if you do not double the money you invested in the class within a week he will refund double the cost of the class to you. To this date there have been no takers. When you understand that with a few changes it is easy to get abundance to flow to you.

If you have ever felt bad about receiving money, or are perpetually without cash to purchase something, or in a bad financial situation, then you need to invest in the guide.

There are several techniques to help you undo the programming and change the mindset that keeps you from generating abundance. People speak of the law of attraction. You attract to you what you most think about. This law is actually a very old piece of wisdom. It has been around long before movies or books like The Secret.

In the self empowerment guide we help you to understand the sources of programming and help you to change the way you have allowed yourself to think. You do the discovery and you do the work. You also get the results.

The information works. Engaging it gives you the proof.

We have a save money guide along with the financial empowerment section of the guide. There are over a hundred and ten ways to save money alone in that part of the Self Empowerment Guide. Everyone can benefit by saving money these days. Not everyone is aware of places to save some extra money.

All of us need to be focusing on getting financially empowered. Cutting your costs and purchasing things that have value are two important lessons for us right now.

I have added the first ten of the more than one hundred ways to save guide here. Please use some of the ways to save right now.

Right now people need ways to save money. Save money out of preparation, not out of fear.

The phrase save it for a rainy day was used to remind people that its good to have a little extra when you cannot work outside.

There is a lot of programming that people allow themselves to be a part of. If you allow yourself to be programmed you will be disempowered. Its time to change the programming to believing in yourself and what you can do.

Here is a gift to help you to save enough money right now so that you can invest it in something that can help you. I know several people who only used the ten we have listed here to save themselves a couple hundred dollars in just two weeks. This is part of my gift to you for coming to my website. Please share this website with everyone you know.

If we can work together and empower each other we can truly make a change in this world.

Here are ten ways to help you financially right now.

1. Turn off those lights. No I am not saying live in the darkness. (Actually I hope to get you out of the darkness) Just shut off the lights in the other rooms. Unplug devices that you are not using. Most household devices draw a small amount of electricity even when they are powered off. Laptop power packs and even the monitor you are using are examples. If there is a light on it, then it is drawing current from the electric company and money from your wallet. At the end of the month you captured a few dollars as a gift to yourself for making the effort.

2. Go on a diet. I have a friend who was reading on a snack box about how much is one portion. She counted out seventeen cheese nips, put them in a bowl and that was her snack for the night. At the time I couldnt help laughing as I finished my box. The next night she had a bowl of cheese nips while I sat hungry contemplating a drive to the store. (More money) She even lost 5 pounds from eating only one portion at a time.

3. Empty the glove box. If you drive, spending gas money carting around objects is pretty silly. I used to let my kids leave a ton of toys in the car to keep them occupied. One day I looked in the back seat and saw that I was the chauffer for passengers who were literally along for the ride. When next I looked I saw a bunch of things in the trunk I had forgotten too. Instead of hauling everything up and down hills and in and out of stop and go traffic. I put the kids toys in a backpack (a bag or box will do just as well) the other items in the house. In the end I think I saved a mile per every four or five gallons. I was quite literally paying to taxi around objects.

4. Buy bigger now, save bigger later. No I am not saying buy that new car you always wanted. Although if you really focus your efforts you will most likely be able to save and generate enough money to do so. I am saying there are some lower cost food places like Aldi's, even Wal-Mart has some discounted food items. Next take a look at the price per ounce. Very often the item that is 32 ounces is 5 cents per ounce and the item that is 16 ounces is 7 cents per ounce. Do the math you are saving 2 cents per ounce or 64 cents for the bigger item. Here is an example. What does a bottle of water cost these days? How about 16 ounces for about a dollar and a half? If you buy 8 bottles of water you spend 12 dollars for one gallon of water. Amazing right? Yes and you thought gas was high.

5. Entertain yourself for free. Yes there are dozens of free events. Free concerts, DVD night with family and friends, a walk in the park, a trip to the library. Take a friend they probably need to become empowered too. Reward yourself with beauty not food. If you had a good day at work, take a walk, if you had a bad day at work, take a walk. If you take a friend the conversation is free. If you are alone and are talking to yourself, people might look at you funny. Borrow videos from friends, share yours as well. One free event a month will net you twenty to fifty dollars of savings.

6. If you dont use it then lose it. Take some of those old books to the used book dealer, sell them on eBay or give them away to friends. (A book exchange) My mother used to have a bunch of books in a room. For a long time I thought she just moved them around. I found out later she was sharing them with friends and her friends were sharing with her. Take those old clothes and drop them off at the goodwill store. If you have been on a diet by using the infomation above then instead of an abundance of weight, you now have an abundance of clothes.

7. If you dont need it, leave it. Do you really need that new issue of the latest sports magazine? The bran new dress? The latest designer fashion? If you need a suit for an interview then please do what you need to, but when you leave it at the store you leave money in your pocket.

8. If you can make it then create it. The time to do so that is. Take the time to do some simple crafts with your kids. Help them make games. Draw on the sidewalk with a rock and things like that. Start a garden. Buy some seeds with a friend and share them. I have a garden every year. After the initial planting I always have left over seeds I share with my neighbor. One tomato seed can give you dozens of tomatoes. Plant good seeds in your life.

9. Fix it or Pitch it. If the button fell off, sew a new one on. If someone else can sew it for you then barter something that you can do. Take the old clothes put them in a box to use when you are outside in the garden or just sitting watching television with your one portion of cheese nips. If you cannot fix it then why heat it with your furnace? Why spend gas on it by carrying it in your car?

10. Look around, save around. Take a look around your house or life. Is a neighbor taking too much of your time complaining about their has-been exes? Do you keep buying batteries when you can go get rechargeable ones that in the end last longer and save being in a landfill? Learn to let go of the things you no longer need and extend the things you do.

11. Of course there is an eleven. Wait three months before purchasing seasonal things. Buy that windbreaker in the winter as well as some of the short sleeve shirts. Savings 50%. Buy next years winter jacket at the end of the winter season. I usually buy my camping supplies in July. I bought a four wheel drive vehicle in March and saved $6500 from the same vehicle I priced just 30 days before.

12. Here is a great trick. When you save some money on something, take it as cash and put it into a piggy bank or some storage. This way you will physically see the result of your efforts. Think of ways to invest this new cash into things that can make more money for you. A garden? Maybe invest it in a type of account that will gain you some interest.

Every time you save money on something, take the cash or coins and put them somewhere. Try it! It is pretty fun to do and see. One of our empowered friends funded a week long vacation at the beach from the money she saved and stored. When she was down at the beach they laughed because they saved some money by going to the grocery store for food and put the money they saved from the restaurant in storage for next years vacation.

In the self empowerment guide there are over 100 more ways to save money. Everyone wants value for their money. Imagine saying to people that you purchaced a guide that saved you dozens of times more that you paid for it.

It is your right to have a happy abundant life. We want that for you as well.

The human mind is complex it perceives things differently according to our beliefs and thought patterns. This unique part of our body gives us the insights and mental prowess to go through life by utilizing our own abilities to survive and adapt. But if you want to live life to the fullest then you better let your creative juices flow to come up with great ideas for self-improvement in both your personal life and career.

Everyone has the capacity to be creative, as long as they dont put a limit to their capability to think and to accept new ideas from the outside. But there are certain hindrances that stop the flow of creative juices on our brain and here are some ideas on how to burst the dam and let the creative you show itself to the world.

Get Rid Of Your Stress

Stress is one of the hindrances in letting your creative juices flow out of you. In most cases, our problems, fears, inhibitions, physical exhaustion, or even our emotions can become a hurdle that stops our mind from thinking anything beside the problem.

Stress management can help get rid of this problem and let your mind relax to boost your creativity. It also helps you focus your eyes on an object that gives you comfort or that can help you relax. You might also want to indulge in your favorite activities to help you get rid of negative thoughts that stop your brain from being creative.

Expand Your Repertoire

Using your own stock knowledge may not be enough to guarantee a fresh flow of creative juices to run through your head. If you want to get some good ideas then you better get out of your hiding-hole and look at your surroundings to get some good thoughts to enter your head. Visit the local park, mall hopping, or even visit your friends to get you in the right mood.

Do What You Want To Do

Get in touch with your hobbies and favorites to help your brain relax and let it do what it is accustomed of doing. You can draw, sing, or even compose a new melody on your piano to help your mind focus on the task at hand. Fresh ideas do come out when you are focused on a specific goal so you better think of what you want to do and start doing it to train your mind to be creative.

Voice Out Your Thoughts

It might help if you come up with ideas while voicing it out loud. You dont need an audience; you just need to listen to your own voice to help your mind focus on the task at hand. It would also help to have someone to talk to and help you come up with creative ideas.

As the famous saying goes 2 heads are better than 1 so you might want to ask some of your few friends for a serious brainstorming session while having fun in the process to avoid stressing yourself out.

Reading And Watching Television

Reading is a great way to exercise your mind to think. If youre reading fantasy novels or short stories, you might notice that your mind visualizes the flow of the story as you read each line. You can easily get new ideas out of your head when it is in this state so give it a try if you want to come up with creative concepts for your goal. Television is also a great way to refresh your brain with new ideas to add to your creativity. Feel free to jump from one channel to another until you find a show that catches your attention. Relax and focus and let your mind wander as you enjoy a comfortable time watching.

Dont force the creativity to come out. In truth, doing so would only give you a headache when you push your brain to its limits. Try to relax and let your thoughts wander; focus on it as if youre watching a movie, and let it do all the work while your body is complete and total rest.

Empowerment – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Empowerment refers to increasing the economic, political, social, educational or spiritual strength of an entity or entities.[according to whom?]

Robert Adams points to the limitations of any single definition of 'empowerment', and the danger that academic or specialist definitions might take away the word and the connected practices from the very people they are supposed to belong to.[1] Still, he offers a minimal definition of the term: 'Empowerment: the capacity of individuals, groups and/or communities to take control of their circumstances, exercise power and achieve their own goals, and the process by which, individually and collectively, they are able to help themselves and others to maximize the quality of their lives.'[2]

Sociological empowerment often addresses members of groups that social discrimination processes have excluded from decision-making processes through - for example - discrimination based on disability, race, ethnicity, religion, or gender. Empowerment as a methodology is often associated with feminism: see consciousness-raising.

"Marginalized" refers to the overt or covert trends within societies whereby those perceived as lacking desirable traits or deviating from the group norms tend to be excluded by wider society and ostracized as undesirables.

Sometimes groups are marginalized by society at large, but governments are often unwitting or enthusiastic participants. This Act made it illegal to restrict access to schools and public places based on race. Equal opportunity laws which actively oppose such marginalization, allow increased empowerment to occur. They are also a symptom of minorities' and women's empowerment through lobbying.

Marginalized people who lack self-sufficiency become, at a minimum, dependent on charity, or welfare. They lose their self-confidence because they cannot be fully self-supporting. The opportunities denied them also deprive them of the pride of accomplishment which others, who have those opportunities, can develop for themselves. This in turn can lead to psychological, social and even mental health problems.

Empowerment is the process of obtaining basic opportunities for marginalized people, either directly by those people, or through the help of non-marginalized others who share their own access to these opportunities. It also includes actively thwarting attempts to deny those opportunities. Empowerment also includes encouraging, and developing the skills for, self-sufficiency, with a focus on eliminating the future need for charity or welfare in the individuals of the group. This process can be difficult to start and to implement effectively.

One empowerment strategy is to assist marginalized people to create their own nonprofit organization, using the rationale that only the marginalized people, themselves, can know what their own people need most, and that control of the organization by outsiders can actually help to further entrench marginalization. Charitable organizations lead from outside of the community, for example, can disempower the community by entrenching a dependence charity or welfare. A nonprofit organization can target strategies that cause structural changes, reducing the need for ongoing dependence. Red Cross, for example, can focus on improving the health of indigenous people, but does not have authority in its charter to install water-delivery and purification systems, even though the lack of such a system profoundly, directly and negatively impacts health. A nonprofit composed of the indigenous people, however, could ensure their own organization does have such authority and could set their own agendas, make their own plans, seek the needed resources, do as much of the work as they can, and take responsibility - and credit - for the success of their projects (or the consequences, should they fail).

The process of which enables individuals/groups to fully access personal or collective power, authority and influence, and to employ that strength when engaging with other people, institutions or society. In other words, Empowerment is not giving people power, people already have plenty of power, in the wealth of their knowledge and motivation, to do their jobs magnificently. We define empowerment as letting this power out."[3] It encourages people to gain the skills and knowledge that will allow them to overcome obstacles in life or work environment and ultimately, help them develop within themselves or in the society.

To empower a female "...sounds as though we are dismissing or ignoring males, but the truth is, both genders desperately need to be equally empowered."[4] Empowerment occurs through improvement of conditions, standards, events, and a global perspective of life.

Legal empowerment happens when marginalised people or groups use the legal mobilisation i.e., law, legal systems and justice mechanisms to improve or transform their social, political or economic situations. Legal empowerment approaches are interested in understanding how they can use the law to advance interests and priorities of the marginalised.[5]

According to 'Open society foundations' (an NGO) "Legal empowerment is about strengthening the capacity of all people to exercise their rights, either as individuals or as members of a community. Legal empowerment is about grass root justice, about ensuring that law is not confined to books or courtrooms, but rather is available and meaningful to ordinary people.[6]

Lorenzo Cotula in his book ' Legal Empowerment for Local Resource Control ' outlines the fact that legal tools for securing local resource rights are enshrined in legal system, does not necessarily mean that local resource users are in position to use them and benefit from them. The state legal system is constrained by a range of different factors - from lack of resources to cultural issues. Among these factors economic, geographic, linguistic and other constraints on access to courts, lack of legal awareness as well as legal assistance tend to be recurrent problems.[7]

In many context, marginalised groups do not trust the legal system owing to the widespread manipulation that it has historically been subjected to by the more powerful. 'To what extent one knows the law, and make it work for themselves with 'para legal tools', is legal empowerment; assisted utilizing innovative approaches like legal literacy and awareness training, broadcasting legal information, conducting participatory legal discourses, supporting local resource user in negotiating with other agencies and stake holders and to strategies combining use of legal processes with advocacy along with media engagement, and socio legal mobilisation.[7]

The growing access of the web in the late 20th century, has allowed women to empower themselves by using various tools on the Internet. With the introduction of the World Wide Web, women have begun to use social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter to start online activism.[8] Through online activism, women are able to empower themselves by organizing campaigns and voicing their opinions for equality rights without feeling oppressed by members of society.[9] For example, on May 29, 2013, an online campaign started by 100 female advocates forced the leading social networking website, Facebook, to take down various pages that spread hatred about women.[10]

In recent years, blogging has also become a powerful tool for the educational empowerment of women. According to a study done by the University of California, Los Angeles, medical patients who read and write about their disease are often in a much happier mood and more knowledgeable than those who do not.[11] By reading others' experiences, patients can better educate themselves and apply strategies that their fellow bloggers suggest.[11]

With the easy accessibility and affordability of e-learning (electronic learning), women can now study from the comfort of their home anywhere, anytime.[12] By empowering themselves educationally through new technologies like e-learning, women are also learning new skills that will come in handy in today's advancing globalized world.

Most women across the globe rely on the informal work sector for an income.[13] If women were empowered to do more and be more, the possibility for economic growth becomes apparent. Empowering women in developing countries is essential to reduce global poverty since women represent most of the worlds poor population.[14] Eliminating a significant part of a nations work force on the sole basis of gender can have detrimental effects on the economy of that nation.[15] In addition, female participation in counsels, groups, and businesses is seen to increase efficiency.[16] For a general idea on how an empowered women can impact a situation monetarily, a study found that of Fortune 500 companies, those with more women board directors had significantly higher financial returns, including 53 percent higher returns on equity, 24 percent higher returns on sales and 67 percent higher returns on invested capital (OECD, 2008).[17] This study shows the impact women can have on the overall economic benefits of a company. If implemented on a global scale, the inclusion of women in the formal workforce (like a Fortune 500 company) can increase the economic output of a nation. Therefore, women can also help businesses grow and economies prosper if they have, and if they are able to use, the right knowledge and skills in their employment.

Many of the barriers to women's empowerment and equity lie ingrained in cultural norms. Many women feel these pressures, while others have become accustomed to being treated inferior to men.[18] Even if men, legislators, NGOs, etc. are aware of the benefits women's empowerment and participation can have, many are scared of disrupting the status quo and continue to let societal norms get in the way of development.[19]

Research shows that the increasing access to the internet can also result in an increased exploitation of women.[8] Releasing personal information on websites has put some women's personal safety at risk. In 2010, Working to Halt Online Abuse stated that 73% of women were victimized through such sites.[20] Types of victimization include cyber stalking, harassment, online pornography, and flaming.[21]

Recent studies also show that women face more barriers in the workplace than do men. Gender-related barriers involve sexual harassment, unfair hiring practices, career progression, and unequal pay where women are paid less than men are for performing the same job.[22] Such barriers make it difficult for women to advance in their workplace or receive fair compensation for the work they provide.

The UK's Department for International Development are working to address constraints to the empowerment of adolescent girls in developing countries. Researchers mapped organisations that competitively seek innovative ideas from both the private and non-profit sectors potentially to reach girls, youth and/or women in developing country contexts and provides support in the forms of finance and technical assistance to bring their ideas to market.[23]

According to Thomas A Potterfield,[24] many organizational theorists and practitioners regard employee empowerment as one of the most important and popular management concepts of our time.

Ciulla discusses an inverse case: that of bogus empowerment.[25]

In the book Empowerment Takes More Than a Minute, the authors illustrate three keys that organizations can use to open the knowledge, experience, and motivation power that people already have.[3] The three keys that managers must use to empower their employees are:

According to author Stewart, in her book Empowering People she describes that in order to guarantee a successful work environment, managers need to exercise the right kind of authority (p.6). To summarize, empowerment is simply the effective use of a managers authority, and subsequently, it is a productive way to maximize all-around work efficiency.

These keys are hard to put into place and it is a journey to achieve empowerment in a workplace. It is important to train employees and make sure they have trust in what empowerment will bring to a company.[3]

In economic development, the empowerment approach focuses on mobilizing the self-help efforts of the poor, rather than providing them with social welfare. Economic empowerment is also the empowering of previously disadvantaged sections of the population, for example, in many previously colonized African countries.[26]

What is Empowerment, why is it so important, how do I get it?

Posted: at 5:03 am

Self-empowerment in its simplest form means taking charge of your own life, in your work place, with your colleagues, with your subordinates, with your superiors, with your body, with your illness and for you caring for yourself. Well this sounds obvious but how come most of us dont do it. The reason for this is that we dont have the full understanding of how to do it properly or even what it means. We seem to rely on some sort of gut instinct or thought pattern within us, that we think this is the way it should be done. When we find out through some experience that, that is not so. we become confused, feel angry, feel hurt, indignant, feel rejected, feel not good enough, etc, etc. The list is endless. So what is the answer? Well lets look at it this way if you had the knowledge and understanding of what and how to do, then you would know how to do things so that they dont blow up in your face. But in order to do this, one needs knowledge of some sort. Another way of putting it is to say that self-empowered individuals do not give away their power or allow others to infantilize them, they use it appropriately. But to do this, one has to own and know your own power and be able to access it and use it appropriately. But how do you that?

The first thing to know is that we all have it, each and every one of us. The only difference between those who own and know their power and use it appropriately and those that dont, is the internal belief system that they have, that they cant have that power.

Ok, if I accept that, then how do I look at my belief systems, or even for that matter find them and overcome them. This is relatively easy and there are many articles on this web site that will help you and give pointers. Please see the articles suggested at the bottom of this article.

Well the first thing to do is, when a situation arises that you have a reaction to be it anything then it is to see where is that feeling in my body, what does it feel like. Try to imagine what it feels like. Once you have that feeling of what it feels like then have a good look at it and trace it back in your life to the first time that you felt like that.

Then have a look at what was going on at the time. What were the circumstances, what was happening to you, what you took on about yourself that did not encourage you to have power, be in your power, to be authentic, that I gave away my power. Your reaction in the present moment is that moment from the past that you are reliving now when the circumstance came up.

In this past moment lies the gem/s for you to ponder on, and overcome. Herein lies the answers that you have been looking for. If you cant do it for yourself then get someone who is specialised to help you to get the answers and understanding for you. Once you have overcome that hurdle, you will have started to build knowledge about yourself and how you operate. When the next similar event comes up then you will be empowered to overcome that similar kind of situation, and will not react negatively. You will be able to handle that particular situation easily.

If you do this exercise over and over again every time you have a reaction to anything, you will build up huge knowledge about yourself. Through this methodology you will eventually overcome all of your reactions. As you do this more and more you will overcome your fears that were holding you back, making you feel dis-empowered. When you have reached that stage you would have become rather powerful or empowered in your own right.

Example Lets look at an example to try and illustrate our point. In our country (South Africa) with the problem of HIV / AIDS. Now people with HIV/AIDS have a typical victim consciousness about them, they feel totally dis-empowered. Ok so how did this come about? Looking at the typical person who has HIV / AIDS, they are generally the ones who have been the victims of society. The have been subjected to negative authority experiences, negative societal experiences, negative cultural experiences, negative cultural experiences, negative home and family life experiences, negative environmental experiences, one being living in townships being imposed on them telling them what and what not to do. This is what I call victim consciousness in this article. They have not been encouraged to think for themselves, in fact just the opposite, they were told not to think. Just do as they were told.

They are subjected to the medical system that is also completely dis-empowering. They are subject to an economic system where they are generally the down trodden one, the abused one, where they have to irk out a measly living etc. etc. From their point of view they see life as hard, that they dont deserve, that they are not good enough, that they are never encouraged to be better, they must just accept the life situation as it is. This then has become a life long pattern for them and they think that this is the way life is and never actually challenge it. They think that this is their lot this is how the dice fell and there is nothing they can do about it. They feel a victim. This is nothing else than a learned behaviour a kind of conditioning. Now look at the symbolism of this and how it is reflected in their disease. Their immune system becomes compromised and they become powerless to defend themselves against disease entering into their body. In my practice I have not yet come across anyone who has the disease that does not have a pattern of victim consciousness in them somewhere.

In order for those who have HIV / AIDS, they need to learn to view themselves as the experts about what they need and what is involved in taking care of themselves. They need to learn to become empowered. Once this attitude develops, the people with AIDS (PWA) will need to be quite vocal about what his or her needs are. Unfortunately, this often has the effect of making other people uncomfortable around the person living with HIV/AIDS.

Be the Expert About Your Own Life The concept of being the expert about your own life is one that many people have some difficulty in seeing and understanding. Let me explain. We all have been raised to believe that a physician knows what's best for our health; a priest, minister or rabbi what's best for us spiritually; a therapist what's best for us emotionally or mentally. Thus, traditionally an expert has been someone else whom we were taught to defer to and trust unconditionally. Questioning the opinions of these experts was not encouraged. The blind acceptance of authority has been a fundamental component of the existing power structures in this society (and in most others as well). This has now become a learned behaviour which in turn has become our own belief system. This belief system is what runs our lives for ever more until we decide to challenge it and then change it within ourselves. Now when these belief systems become ignited in us, in a life situation, where the person is required to act in his power they feel that they cant (feel powerless) and that they have no right to. Thus they react in a powerless type manner / in a victim type manner and so become submissive, powerless, non challenging, accepting etc etc and so the cycle goes on.

Empowerment Empowerment means to gain knowledge and understanding. Self empowerment means to gain knowledge and understanding of the self. Think of it like this. If you knew absolutely nothing about a car and its inner workings, and the car broke down somewhere far from home. You would have no idea what to do to fix the car, so that you can go on. Yet if you had a good knowledge and understanding of the car and its inner workings then you could figure out what needs to be done, get the tools and spares to do it, and fix it. In this situation you would be empowered (feel empowered) for you would know what to do to get yourself going again. You would not just sit in the car and wait for someone to come and sort out the problem for you.

So self-empowerment means to gain knowledge over the Self. In a similar way that you would have gained knowledge and understanding on the inner workings of the car.

So what does this mean? It is essential to gain knowledge of how we all work. What happens on the inside, what are the mechanisms that play and how do they affect our lives. This is a study on its own. Some of the articles listed below and on this web site will give you a broad understanding. Then the next stage would be to find out and understand where did our personal belief systems come from. Once we understand that then we can have a look at the interaction of the two, and see how they run our lives, and how we attract certain events into our lives that reinforce our personal belief systems. This is in line with one of the universal laws that states, that which is on the inside will be reflected on the outside. So to put it in terms of the HIV / AIDS example above if you are feeling a victim on the inside, then on the outside, will reflect your real life situation.

Another Example Let me give you another example of a child in an upmarket home, who has everything done for them, everything is given to them and they never lack for anything. They are used to just giving orders and getting what they want. This kind of child then grows up and goes out into the working world carrying this experience with them. This is their belief system about the world and the way it operates. They expect to be able to carry on the same kind of life style they were used to when they were growing up. They suddenly find that they are in constant conflict with their co workers, their subordinates and superiors. They cant understand why and what is going on that life does not work like that. From the outside looking in we can easily see what is going on but from the inside of the person they have no idea they think that this is the way that life should be and that is how they think they should operate. They cant see why people are in conflict with them. They simply have no idea.

And so we can go on and on with examples of life.

Empowerment Characteristics So lets define and discuss empowerment and in particular self empowerment. Lets start with empowerment. Empowerment is probably the totality of the following or similar capabilities:

Self empowerment means then to have the personal knowledge and belief in self to be able to perform any or all of the above. A self empowered person reflects within themselves a feeling of self confidence that is demonstrated by the following qualities;

We at the Self Empowerment and Development Centre have programs where we teach you to discover first of all how you work on the inside, then we also offer processes for you to find out what your belief systems are that are subconsciously operating in your life. Self Empowerment Exercise – Inspired Personal Development

Here's an eye opening self empowerment exercise to help you take a quick inventory of your values, priorities and goals. It's a great little 'check up' to see where your priorities are taking you, and if they are helping you travel in the direction of your dreams.

"When you realise that every action you take is based on your own priorities, you realise the vast power that is in your own hands." YOU are the WIND

Just work through the 6 Steps below. As you'll see at the end of the exercise, you can go back to number 3 and work through this exercise in any area of your life.

What are 10 of the top values you have been honouring in your life? Your highest values are primary qualities that you most want to have in your life. You base your decisions on these, and they determine your behaviours, how you relate to others, and the actions you take. Identifying these will help you to appreciate your existing self empowerment... it's you who gets to decide what values you want to live by.

There are hundreds of possible values, from achievement to zeal, and every letter in between. List 10 that speak loudly to you.

Prioritize the 10 highest values you have identified, with #1 being the most important to you.

Now take a little inventory of where your life is at in this moment regarding 'a close personal relationship with a significant other'. Examples of taking a brief stock in this category might be:

I'm in a long term loving relationship and am very happy;

I'm in a long term relationship and not very happy;

I'm single and want a happy relationship;

I'm single and very happily so

Then browse over your list of 10 top values and see if you can identify which of your chosen values might be contributing to your 'present personal relationship status'.

Next, state what your optimum 'personal relationship status' goal would be in a perfect world.

Now, think about how your values might re-organize or change if you want to give relationship priorities greater weight. Would doing so be helpful to achieve your highest vision of a personal relationship in your life? In consideration of this, you might also like to review some literature on what is important in the type of relationship you envision. ex. Love as a Way of Life by Gary Chapman

This is a simple yet powerful self empowerment exercise.

It can help with your holistic personal development in any area of your life that you would like to examine a bit more closely.

Just go back to Step 3, and instead of taking inventory of where your life is at regarding 'a close personal relationship' try it in these various areas:

Work and career

Income and financial

Physical and health

Mind and learning

Social community

Spiritual experience

When you do these exercises, you'll be following the threads that show you the reasons as to why your life looks as it does. You can be thrilled to see these connections, and to know they are in your power to change!

"I've gone through life believing in the strength and competence of others; never in my own. Now, dazzled, I discover that my capacities are real. It's like finding a fortune in the lining of an old coat." Joan Mills
