Fourteen Key Personal Development Skills

By Gen Wright
It's helpful to take a high level perspective on personal development, looking broadly at all the important skills. This can help identify areas you may be weak in, and serve as a mental checklist to help you focus. While this is not an exhaustive list of elements important to personal development, these are some of the most important.
1. Continuous Learning: Take responsibility for your own lifelong personal development, knowing that its the secret to success in all areas of life, and your most valuable asset. Your knowledge and experience is personal wealth you can never lose.
2. Positivity: Find the positive aspect in everything, accepting what cannot be changed, and acting on what can, towards a positive result. Dont let circumstances drive your state of being, let your state of being drive your results. Smile and use humor to help drive a positive attitude and share it with others.
3. Personal Excellence: Strive to do your best in everything you do. If its worth doing, its worth doing well. Not only to achieve superior results, but so that if you fail you can remain positive rather than wishing you had tried harder. Look to be creative in your personal excellence rather than follow the safest, lowest risk path.
4. Honesty: Maintain honesty and integrity in all that you do. Trust and respect by others is hard earned, yet can be permanently lost over the smallest lie. Decide that honesty is one of your core values, and stick to it at all costs.
5. Know Yourself: You are a unique individual with your own strengths and weaknesses, all others have these also. The difference with a successful person is they have learned to leverage their strengths, and to identify their weaknesses so they can improve those areas through learning and practice. Accept yourself as you are without comparison to others, if you look you will find much about yourself to be proud of and thankful for.
6. Appreciate the Moment: Seek happiness in the present moment, even in the simple things around you such as nature, a good conversation, or a good meal. Excessive contemplation on the past or future steals this appreciation from you. Some techniques to support this is getting out in nature, and meditation.
7. Communicate Well: Learning to communicate well with others is an essential skill, which includes speaking, writing, listening well, and body language. Nearly everyone can still find areas to grow with these skills, and should receive constant attention. Becoming a good listener is one of the top areas of improvement you should seek, become truly interested in other people and it will work wonders.
8. Embrace Mistakes: Mistakes are a prerequisite to personal development; you must choose either courage and success, or safety and being average. Mistakes are a learning opportunity so long as you are not repeating your mistakes, if you have learned from a failure then pat yourself on the back. Carry this to others mistakes also, forgive them with this understanding in mind.
9. Embrace Change: Change is a constant part of life, and integral to personal development and success. Become excited about change, and look to it with a positive attitude. Be a leader by being the initiator of positive change. If you fear change, then you fear personal development, as self improvement is about changing yourself.
10. Increase Your Value: Know that personal development is not a selfish activity; rather it increases your value to others, ranging from relationships, business, and career. Too many people focus on changing others, which rarely works as well as changing yourself. Make a difference externally by changing yourself internally.
11. Be Giving: Seek to be giving, compassionate, loving, yet humble, knowing you receive what you give out. This is a secret to finding happiness in life.
12. Balance: Seek balance in all areas of life, considering family, relationships, career, business, health, leisure, and spirituality.
13. Gratitude: Be thankful for the gift and opportunity of life. If you have a spiritual belief, pursue the core tenets of the teachings and make them part of who you are.
14. Find Your Excitement: Find things in life that excite you, and act on them. Embracing things which excite and motivate you will move you more quickly into success and happiness, and attract the things you need to get there. This attitude will support and integrate with all the above tenets.

Personal Development – DPhiE

Delta Phi Epsilon Sorority has identified five areas of development and personal growth among our members which cultivate a well-rounded and balanced woman. These areas are known as our five S's - Scholarship, Self, Service, Sisterhood, and Social. Every active undergraduate member of DPhiE is expected to complete 21 PEARLs (or activities) each academic year. The purpose behind this is so that she can intentionally engage in activities that fulfill areas of each of the five S's. By the end of the year, each woman will complete at least four PEARL's associated with each S, in addition to a Personal Development Pearl (PDP). The PDP is a long term goal that a sister will work on over the course of the year. PDPs are focused around something that a sister wants to personally improve upon in her life. Examples of this would be learning to play an instrument, learning another language, train for a marathon at the end of the year, or perform in a community theater production. The possibilities are unique for each sister to support her in becoming the woman she wants to be.
Sisters receive the support and encouragement of her chapter's Vice President of Membership Development and/or PEARL Coordinator as she works on completing her PEARL requirements.
SisterhoodOrganizational Knowledge and Skills
In order for the sorority to function as a family and have an environment that fosters positive personal and group development, the chapter itself must be strong. Individual sisters must have the skills to manage the affairs of the chapter and lead their fellow sisters. All members must have knowledge of how the sorority operates and what are the expectations are of the members. Sisters must also have an understanding of the Greek system, the benefits of being in a sorority, and the policies relating to Greek life. A strong sorority experience involves mutual friendship, support between members, and activities that increase the bonds of sisterhood. Workshops in this area include: Panhellenic; campus Greek policies; chapter management skills; chapter goal setting; group dynamics; marketing/chapter PR; and officer development. Retreats and sisterhood activities with planned educational programs to increase communication skills and the understanding of sorority values could also be included in this area. (A simple sisterhood dinner would not suffice for a Pearl experience, but may continue to be part of sisterhood activities as often as the chapter likes.)
Scholarship
College is designed to prepare students to function as educated and productive members of their families, their professions, and society. Delta Phi Epsilon recognizes academics as a priority and aims to enhance the college mission by providing information and assistance on educational concerns, intellectual development, career preparation, and life style planning. Workshops in this area should include: time management; study skills; using campus resources (career center, learning center, library, etc.); cultural and fine arts events; faculty dinner speakers; literary reviews/debates; resume writing and interviewing skills; social skills for business; balancing family and career; and goal setting for personal advancement. Chapters are strongly encouraged to invite experts (faculty members and others) to guide you through information and ideas that may be new to you (i.e., different topics such as appreciating African Art, understanding Japanese, business culture, realizing the impact of man on the rain forests, etc.)
Service
Delta Phi Epsilon aims to develop women who will be contributing members of society. Service Pearl Experiences should be designed to expose members to relevant societal issues and provide opportunities to make a positive impact within as well as outside of the sorority. Through membership in Delta Phi Epsilon, you have the chance to become aware of important issues, discover new ways to be more involved, and begin to participate in community service and philanthropic projects. Service Pearl Experiences should be designed to encourage members to continue their involvement in philanthropic and community events after college. Activities should include: Fundraising for Delta Phi Epsilon's philanthropies and other philanthropic organizations; community service projects; and participation in campus service programs. Invited speakers could address such topics as volunteering for literacy programs, understanding the long term impact of the AIDS crisis, women's involvement in local politics, scientific discoveries that will have social implications (i.e. global warming, toxic waste management, etc.), local policies on smoking, recycling, voter registration, etc. Chapters can arrange for speakers from the campus, League of Women Voters, United Way, and other community service organizations, philanthropic and community leadership societies, and other political, social service, and non-profit professional societies.
Social
Social Pearl Experiences provide you with opportunities to enhance your communication and leadership as well as the ability to work with and relate to others in a variety of situations. College graduates need the knowledge and experiences of social skills in order to effectively participate in one-on-one situations and small and large group settings. You should use the Social Pearl Experience to explore diversity, multiculturalism, and gender issues, as well as leadership development. Workshops in this area should include: listening and communication skills; gender differences; diversity and multiculturalism; conflict resolution; leadership training; handling difficult social situations (including sexual harassment, substance abuse); and conversation skills, especially as they relate to membership recruitment. Social Pearl Experiences involving other groups, (i.e. fraternities, sororities and NPHC groups), workshops and opportunities to practice skills (mock interviews, receptions with administrators, gender communication workshops, etc.) are appropriate for this area and are encouraged.
Self
College is a time of change for young women, and the sorority is uniquely positioned to assist you in positively meeting new challenges and offering support and encouragement. By promoting positive self-awareness and providing opportunities for self-discovery, your sorority involvement will help you develop individual strength, establish a personal set of values, and clarify your purpose as a student and a member. Self pearl experiences should focus on developing physical and mental well-being. Workshops should include: personal fitness; nutrition; managing stress and anxiety; women's health issues; body image; self-esteem; personal safety; personal values and spirituality; promoting personal creativity and risk taking; and maintaining a positive balance.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT PAPER. I was born in Vietnam in 1982. My family includes my parents, my older and younger sister and me. I was the middle child. In Vietnam, my mom is a dentist, while my dad is a construction engineer. My parents are educated and so they always stress about the importance of educations. They are both loving parents who work really hard to take care of my sisters and me. They always want to make sure we have a roof over our head, food on the tables, clothes to keep us warm. Both are working parents and we are in middle range income in society. Both of my parents have different religion. My dad is Buddhist and my mom is Catholic. However, they came up with agreement that my sisters and I both come to the church once a week and to the temple when needed. I also have two sisters. My older sister was born three years before me and my younger sister was born four years after me. We have a close relationship. We often play with each other and share our stories, our toys. We have a good bond sisterhood. When I was young, I often play with both my sisters. We pretended to be a mother taking care of baby doll. Those were the precious times of our childhood. We do run into fight, arguing but soon those arguing evaporates and we learn to be good sisters again, who watch out and take care for each other. In school, I was usually a good student who obeys and listen to my teacher. I was good in academic also. I often got rewarded for my academic standing. From my first grade to the end of my high school years, I was always regarded as one of top students in my class. My parents were always proud of me. Although I was really strong academically, I lack social skills. I often have social anxiety, paranoid, that it made really hard to make friends and stayed close for a long time. I often hung out with few friends. I did not have a lot of friends due to my shyness and anxiety. However, most of my close friends are trustworthy, kind hearted, and loving. As a...

When I read about this for the first time I was not all that impressed but as I continued to study its premise and then actually put it to use in my life I was astonished at the amount of confidence I had in myself to achieve some of my greatest aspirations.

Concentration is the number one key to effectiveness, when you have the ability to sit down and single-minded without distraction focus on that one major task, your ability to accomplish that task just multiplies ten times over.
When youre facing self-doubt and weakness there is no better way to overcome such terrible feelings then to accomplish a difficult task and truly give yourself something to take pride in.
The overwhelmingly powerful feeling of self-pride can help you defeat any negativity that is constantly clawing at your door to success.
The successful achievement of a goal that you have set for yourself will without fail and with no exceptions build your confidence and create the drive within you to increase your own expectations.
One of the other great personal development tips that I had learned from one of the many great audio programs that I listen to daily is 80/20 rule.
When facing your day you first must ask yourself what are the 20% of the things that I have to do that accounts for 80% of the value of my work.
You would be amazed with the results you will see just in your increase of the productive accomplishments you have throughout your day and there is a direct correlation between your productivity and the amount of self-confidence you have.
A program that I have turn to when my self-confidence is in question is Jack Canfields Maximum Confidence, with his mix of personal stories and expertise in the field of personal development he delivers a very entertaining and educational audio program loaded with powerful and effective personal development tips.
In this mix of live and studio recordings, Jack Canfield will help you more Personal Development Tips such as building maximum confidence, just as hes helped thousands of people create the life of their dreams.
Jack is an internationally known expert in the areas of self-esteem, peak performance and the psychology of achievement.
He is the founder and co-creator of the amazing New York Times #1 Best-Selling Chicken Soup for the Soul book series.
Always work on the top 20% because there is never enough time in life to do everything but there is always enough time to do the important things.
So always work on the top 20% of the items on your list that make up for the greatest amount of value whether it be what you accomplish at home or at your job.
I realize that I never did mention that you must make yourself lists. This is one of the best personal development tips, making a list is crucial to really getting things done. When you know what it is you are to get done within a day you do not waste any time trying to figure out where to begin.
It is pretty typical for people to write their list of things to do and then pick out that which is easy and fun to do first which NEVER leaves time to accomplish anything of true value and then they wonder why they dont get things done and this can weigh very heavy on your mind.
When we truly want to develop personal power and help keep our mood from slipping into a negative pattern we must constantly feed our minds with positive productive thoughts.
The sense of pride that you will feel for getting things accomplished is a very strong tool in maintaining a positive mental attitude.
You must train yourself to concentrate on the hardest yet most valuable tasks if you really want to achieve the type of success that propels you forward in life. By keeping these personal development tips at the top of your list of things to do on a daily basis you cannot help but to see improvements in your life.
The ability to single-minded concentrate on one thing at a time, to persevere and to will yourself to accomplishing that one major task is a huge key to building your personal power and it is a trait that is shared by all great achievers.
Time management which is really life management is crucial in accomplishing the tasks at hand. That is why I mentioned making a list, when you make a list it is like giving yourself a blueprint of things that must be done. You will not be found scratching your head wondering what to do next.
Keeping your mind busy on important details leaves very little room for worry and self-doubt and it does not allow negative thoughts to slip into your consciousness.
When you are accomplishing things you are using your mind in a valuable positive way. Without a list and without staying busy you are inviting trouble in and you are just wasting time and let me tell you this, THAT IS PERMANENT, you never get it back, time is our most precious commodity.
You should get in the habit of asking yourself what is the best use of my time right now? And if you are not accomplishing the most valuable task at that moment, simply put GET TO IT.
You MUST get into the habit of always working on the most important things all the time and you must concentrate solely on that task. This is one of the best personal development tips that I can give you that will improve and increase your personal achievements.
When you are truly using your time in the most valuable way you will feel terrific inside. Concentrated effort is a source of energy and enthusiasm, when you are working on something important you feel terrific and useful inside as opposed to accomplishing nothing leaving yourself feeling horrible and opening the door for all sorts of negative thoughts.
If you habitually ask yourself the question: Is this the most valuable use of my time right now? And you consistently act upon it you will start to accomplish more in your life then you ever thought possible and a feeling of accomplishment leaves no room for negativity.
To sum up what I have discussed, you must always concentrate on the most important tasks which will make you much more effective because it will be the most valuable use of your time. Always remain completely focused on the task at hand, approach it with a sense of urgency and stick with it until its completed.
Having implemented this key to personal power in my own life has helped me to achieve more in both my personal and professional life then I had thought possible.
Just the fact that I had a system to follow kept my mind busy and focused on POSITIVE events, circumstances and outcomes.
I truly turned my life around in that I learned I could still contribute, I could work on my focus and accomplish things that mattered which left me feeling better about myself, my life and my overall personal development and growth.
I experienced improved self-confidence and greater self-esteem, my self-image shot through the roof and everything in my life improved as a result.
To concentrate and I mean to really focus on building my personal power proved to me that I had a use in this world and that I had more to offer this world than I had ever thought before.
I hope you follow these personal development tips as I know without a doubt in my mind that your life with be all the better for doing so.
Master these keys to personal power and you will soon learn how to tap your invaluable mental resources and free yourself from the imaginary chains of fear, doubt, and negativity. When you break through the success barrier once and for all, youll wonder what was stopping you to begin with.
As you build upon your own personal successes, you will begin to understand as never before the power of your mind to shape, determine and change the circumstances of your life.
A positive action step to help you jump-start you your new journey for self-discovery and personal growth. Focus on current personal strengths in every arena of your life and begin to build list of all your past and present personal achievements. Carry your list with you at all times and continue to add to the list as you discover and develop new talents and abilities.
As your list grows be sure to review it often, daily would be best, now use what we will call your self-discovery list to create a new list of your own personal development tips.
Now you can share your list with others as this will help to embed the personal development tips which helped you the most into your subconscious mind creating a never ending cycle of positive, productive personal growth improving your life in ways that you could only have imagined before embarking on your journey of self-discovery and personal development.

Figuring out whats most important when it comes to self help, personal development, or self improvement can be tricky. Each person is different and no two people are at the same place in their lives. Whats a person like me to do when trying to help out?
Ask what you want to see, read, and learn!
So thats just what I did. A few months back, I put a survey up as the first couple of questions at the beginning of the strengths test and yall did an awesome job of getting me some good information! I have a much better understanding of what it is most people are looking for when it comes to making life better.
Sure, some of it may seem obvious, but since were all on different chapters of our personal development journey, you never can be too careful when it comes to finding out what matters most. Ready for the results? 🙂
I only had the survey up for a few weeks, but it looks like we had about 153 strengths test takers answer the optional survey questions. That was about 5% of all visitors to the test. So we didnt get a lot of participation, but we did get some good data.
Now out of that 153, there were 128 good data points. The Lord of the Rings and less-than-nice answers were deleted. We have some VERY interesting people out there, folks. Overall, a relatively small sample size, but theres still some good information to be had.
Im not really surprised by whats up there, but I am little surprised by some of the ordering. Good to know!
Oh and I did have some other good answers so I might as well include them here since youve read this far.
Health and fitness this far down the ranks?! Whoa that was a big surprise for me. I guess people who are looking to figure out their strengths already have the health and fitness subject pretty well covered. Interesting.
Keep that in mind when youre reading over these results. The audience that is taking this test is probably not your average Joe and Jane. These are the real go-getters that are well on their personal development journey and are looking to optimize their life through their strengths and weaknesses.
Good information and I am very thankful for all of those who participated. I hope the information will be useful for you.
Got any good insights or conclusions from the survey results? Im curious to hear your thoughts! Send me an email and lets chat. Thanks!
And if you havent found your strengths and weaknesses, yet, then click on over and take it already! 🙂
