A Personal Message from Alan Chapman (Businesballs founder/owner)
My partner and soulmate Liane Ashberry died in April 2015. Shortly before Liane died we finished four years of writing and recording an album of original songs. The album is called Ploughed Heart, by Rude Angel (released 9th October) - we were a little amateur trio, now a duo. Our songs - especially Liane's beautiful lyrics and vocals - were mainly inspired by Liane's loss of her daughter Ella age 11 to bone cancer in 2009, together with Liane's extraordinary love, fun, spirituality and generosity in life. The songs are variously touching, uplifting, sad, etc., and some people seem to love them. After losing Ella, Liane raised over 60,000 for bone cancer research and children's cancer treatment facilities. She was the most selfless giving person I have ever known. Proceeds of our album will as far as possible go to Liane's charities, extended now to mental health and suicide reduction, because sadly Liane took her own life. The devastation is beyond words. If you can support us in any way I would be hugely grateful. See our band's website http://www.rudeangel.co.uk, and our facebook page. You can hear all the songs free at Soundcloud. There is a Youtube video of the single 'Rhythm of Sound' from the album. To promote the album, please sign up to our 'Thunderclap' which will announce the album on 24th October to all of your Facebook/Twitter contacts. Thank you so much. Love to you all, Alan Chapman xxx.
P.S. If you wish to send a message please post a comment or like us on our Facebook page, or share something about us, or follow/retweet us on Twitter, or help spread the word in some other way. Thanks.

What is Personal Development? – Myrko Thum

Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate. ~ Carl Gustav Jung
Yesterday I was at a birthday party of one of my best friends, who just turned 30. One of the guests asked me what I currently do, so I told him Im building something in Personal Development
which earned me a blank stare from him! As the seconds ran by I could literally see him articulating the question: What is Personal Development?
So I was trying to find common ground by telling him Personal Development is a bit like Self-Help, but more proactive from my perspective. Just like Self-Improvement, which he had an understanding for. The fact that he obviously was lacking some real personal development of his own, got me into elaborating on the topic more and more, earning more and more interest from him
Personal Development is theconscious pursuit of personal growth by expanding self-awareness and knowledge and improving personal skills.[Tweet this!]
Those skills include my mind, my body, my spirit as well as my level of success in all areas of life, however I may define that. The ultimate goal of Personal Development for me is to be a self-realized human being. That means living consciously at my full potential and reaching real happiness in my life.
By progression I mean that there are essential steps to take when starting out with Personal Development. I believe thatin the process of personal growththere are specific milestones to reach, and that without tackling these, personal growth is not really possible or at least not complete.
Maybe you are still not convinced that Personal Development is for you and you may still ask Why? The reason is simple:
Life is just better when we have done work on ourselves.[Tweet this!]
And that includes our mental, physical, emotional, social and financial life. I think its fair to say:
Personal Development makes you happy.[Tweet this!]
You cant really argue with that goal
So how can you get started on your own journey of personal growth. Or if you have already started to consciously follow personal development, how can you get to the next level? During my now over 10 years work on that topic, I identified several of those milestones mentioned above.
There is the basic motivation to improve yourself. Its either coming from inspiration and you are looking to get better than you already are, or it comes out of desperation: something unpleasant challenges you to grow. For instance, what brought you here today?
One of the first things you need is something I would sum up as acceptance. Acceptance means to see your life / your situation as it really is and accept that. Stoprationalizing things you are truly unhappy about and tell yourself the truth. That may also mean you have to look at areas of your life where it really can be painful to accept the status quo. If you connect to the truth you have laid the most important basis to really grow. You have to know where you stand. From there you can move forward. Without that its just not working. Period.
I think the most essential things in Personal Development deal with how you look at the world and how you see yourself in the world, which then determines how you act in the world. Are you a victim or a winner? Do you see yourself as self-confident or not? Are you in control or not? Are you successful? Are you happy or not, and in what parts of your life.
Much of it is about making the unconscious conscious. Thats what this blog is really all about (and then to do the work). Its always the first part to become conscious of how we really work on the inside. Only then we can get control over it. For instance the idea from above of telling yourself the truth, acceptance, is just the same: to make the unconscious reality, that we may haveignoredbefore, conscious. Just that we can make progress now, while before it wasnt even on our radar in was just unconscious.
In psychology this is calledthe four stages of competence:
Quote from Wikipedia:
Makes sense. And in Personal Development we are talking about this process for our whole personality.During this process we make unconscious beliefs that limit us conscious (see my articleHow to Change Self-Limiting Beliefs). We take responsibility for ourselves and stop pointing to others for results that we are responsible for. (see Take Responsibility in Your Life). This moves us back to power again, since we are the one in the driving seat. We are response-able, which enables us to dream again, set a life-vision and set some exciting new goals for our life (see The Fastest Way to Set Motivating Goals).
We learn to get more energy (see How to Increase Your Energy) and how to use it intelligently. We get more self-awareness and improve our mental focus (see How to Develop a Laser-Sharp Mental Focus). We develop a personal development plan that will guide us to where we really want to go.
There are a lot of more things to improve in our own personal growth. But with those mentioned tackled, I think we start to lay a strong the foundation for Personal Development.
So, next time someone asks me What is Personal Development? I may just give him a link to this post.
And coming back to the question, what would you have said? What is Personal Development for yourself?
The rest is here:

Purdue OWL: Writing the Personal Statement
Posted: September 26, 2015 at 12:47 am
Summary:
This handout provides information about writing personal statements for academic and other positions.
Contributors:Jo Doran, Allen Brizee Last Edited: 2012-05-08 09:59:04
The personal statement, your opportunity to sell yourself in the application process, generally falls into one of two categories:
1. The general, comprehensive personal statement:
This allows you maximum freedom in terms of what you write and is the type of statement often prepared for standard medical or law school application forms.
2. The response to very specific questions:
Often, business and graduate school applications ask specific questions, and your statement should respond specifically to the question being asked. Some business school applications favor multiple essays, typically asking for responses to three or more questions.
Answer the questions that are asked
Tell a story
Be specific
Find an angle
Concentrate on your opening paragraph
Tell what you know
Don't include some subjects
Do some research, if needed
Write well and correctly
Avoid clichs
For more information on writing a personal statement, see the personal statement vidcast.

Top 100 Personal Development Blogs for 2015 – The Start of …
Posted: September 20, 2015 at 8:46 pm
Were kicking off 2015 with an absolute bang!
Damn, I love this time of year. Its all about setting your year up for massive success and what better way of doing that then presenting you with the best personal development blogs for 2015. In fact, we bring you the Top 100!
This is the third year that we have compiled the Top 100 personal development blogs and every year we see more and more blogs adding great value to people all around the world.
I must say, because of all the awesome value that everyone is putting out there on the internet, it is getting harder and harder for personal development bloggers to make this list. So if you have made the list of the Top 100 personal development blogs this year then I, and everyone else, give you HUGE congratulations!
But firstly, I hope you had an absolutely fantastic night to bring in 2015. Sylvia and I went to a friends apartment with views across Sydney Harbour in Australia to witness some absolutely spectacular fireworks. It was the perfect way to farewell 2014 and launch into the New Year.
Now, more than ever, is the perfect time to regain focus on what you truly want in life and ensure you have the strategies and support you need to be successful at it too. The turn of the New Year gives us a clear time to separate the past and move forward into the future.
Thats why I love this time of year. Its the perfect time for creating new habits, setting your goals and making real change in your life.
Being a student of the personal development industry most of my life, Im always on the lookout for the latest and greatest resources to not only implement into my own life but to also share with those around me. Since Ive been running my own business Ive fallen more and more into the well of personal development and self-improvement and I absolutely love it! With the internet now a common place for everyone and the free economy being born, its amazing to know that what was once hidden from the majority of people and limited to a select few people paying $5,000 to access information at a weekend seminar, this information is now mostly widely available for free on the internet or at least at a much more affordable price.
The key to all this information is being able to pull whats relevant for you and being able to apply that information in a systematic and successful way that will lead you towards your desired life.
I feel honoured to know that over the last few years Ive had the pleasure of getting to know a lot of the blog owners in this list and share some great experiences with them. I can certainly say that after sifting through each and every self-improvement blog, Im highly impressed with everyones work!
It is somewhat tricky putting together a list of the Top 100 personal development blogs as it can be rather subjective in nature. To avoid this, Ive removed any of my own opinions or judgements and let pure metrics do the talking.
As with previous years, what I have created is a list of personal development blogs that rank from the most trafficked (largest number of visitors) down to the least trafficked. This list will provide you with a clear indication of how large a website is and its relative importance in the personal development blogosphere. Keep in mind, even though the blogs towards the bottom are the least trafficked, they are still within the Top 100 out of hundreds and thousands of personal development blogs out there on the internet (if not more!).
One thing to keep in mind, however, is that a larger site (a site ranked towards the top) does not necessarily indicate that the site is of better quality. Generally speaking, you will find that the larger sites have been around for longer and have more blog posts and content being crawled by Google. Because of this, they are sure to have larger audiences. In saying that, however, the top sites have lasted the test of time and continue to have strong readership so they must be doing something right!
Last year we introduced the concept of magazine-styled or multiple-authored personal development websites. These are websites that originated as personal development blogs but have grown to a level where there are now multiple authors providing content on a regular basis.
Keeping in tune with last year, I have decided to again separate these blogs as they are more commercial in nature and not really websites that I would classify as blogs.
Yes, there are still some blogs in the Top 100 list that have multiple authors (including yours truly), however the key difference is that in the Top 100 list the blog owner is still the main, active contributor to the website and they are the primary person that you will be learning from.
Rather than eliminate these websites completely, I always decide to add them here as they are still fantastic resources to learn from, a great means of finding personal development professionals that you might relate with and are also great guest posting sites for those personal development bloggers that would like to write an article on another site.
If you feel your blog or website should be included above or removed from the above and added to the Top 100 below, please let me know.
This is YOUR LIST.
This is a resource that I encourage you to save and come back to on a regular basis. As we progress throughout the year we all face different challenges and often those challenges have already been faced by others elsewhere in the world. Thats when I suggest you return to this list and find the right blog to guide you.
Each personal development blog is unique and has its own style and purpose. You will also find that you will resonate strongly with some blog owners and their content and perhaps less so with others. For this reason, there is a wide variety of blogs on the list; including business, career and work, happiness, health, productivity and more. The one thing in common is that they all are themed around self-improvement.
My recommendation to you is to browse through each of the blogs below at least once and then pick out the two or three blogs that really resonate with you.
Think about the below questions as you sift through each blog:
Be sure to subscribe to their content and make personal development a key focus for you this year. Its like having a free mentor or coach.
The Top 100 Personal Development Blogs are ranked in order from the most-trafficked (largest number of visitors) to the least-trafficked (although the smallest in this case is still a Top 100 Blog!)
There are two primarytools that have been used for determining this ranking.
Firstly, I have used the Alexa rank of the website as the primary ranking method.Alexaprovides a relative ranking of each website based on the number of visitors it receives. A rank of 100,000 would mean that the site is the 100,000th most visited site on the internet. With the millions and millions of websites on the internet, such a ranking is classified as pretty good! Just so you know, Googles rank is #1, Facebook is ranked #2 and YouTube is ranked #3. The Top 100 Personal Development Blogs are ranked by Alexa scores (asof January 2015).
Secondly, I have included Google Page Rank.Google Page Rankis one of the tools Google uses to determine a sites relative importance. This is done primarily by how many quality backlinks the website has. Generally, a score of 3 or higher represents the site is of relative importance. The Top 100 Personal Development Blogs are not ranked by Google Page Rank, however I haveincluded thePageRank of each blog for you to utilise if you wish (you can filter by this).
People often question the validity of such tools, however, when comparing more generally the relative size of a website they are quite accurate and very useful indicators. Other tools might indicate that a lower-ranked blog in our Top 100 is infact larger than a higher-ranked blog, but generally speaking, the Top 10 websites will always be larger than those ranked 10-20, and those ranked 10-20 will always be larger than those ranked 20-30 etc. To sum it up, the larger and more trafficked sites will always tend to be ranked higher regardless of the tool being used.
Do you want to get really funky with the Top 100 blogs? Im pleased to let you know that the Top 100table is dynamic. This means that you can search for your favourite blog to see where it is ranked and sort by any column, such as page rank or alphabetical order. This is your list. Have fun with it!
Theres one small change to how the blogs are ranked for this year. There were a few blogs last year that somehow snuck into the Top 100 without having any PageRank. Therefore, for this year, Ive only included those blogs that have a PageRank of atleast 1.
Without further ado, let me introduce you to the Best Personal Development Blogs for 2015!
CONGRATULATIONS to every blogger that has made this Top 100 list! I personally give you a high-five and want to thank you for your contribution to this world.
If your blog is one of the Top 100, you have the honourof displaying the following badge on your site. This is the most comprehensive list of personal development blogs currently on the internet and Im honoured to have you as part of this! Simply use the code provided below to add it to your site.

Personal Development Goals – Simona Rich
Posted: at 9:42 pm
If you are not sure what kind of personal development goals you can set for yourself, here is the list that will help you decide. It contains many examples of self improvement goals in the areas of spirituality, productivity, health, relationships and personalfulfilment.
Hopefully this list of personal development goals will give you ideas of what goals you can set for yourself.
If you are still struggling with coming up with personal development goals, heres what you should do:
1. Go to a place where you wont be disturbed.
2. Identify the area of your life you would like to change most.
3. Identify the things in that area of life you are least satisfied with.
4. Come up with ways to improve those aspects.
5. Set a definite personal development goal together with a plan of how to achieve it.
Your personal development goal can be anything that improves your personality/body/health in some way. Such self growth goals can include other people or be only about you. However know that if your goals include other people, you cannot affect them directly because every person has a free will. So the best thing to do is to set goals that you can fully control.
For example, if you decide that your self improvement goal is to lose weight, such goal is good because you are the only force that impacts your weight. But if you set a goal for some particular person to like you, you dont have full control of that goal. Of course, if you improve your personality that person might as well start liking you, but this depends only on that person therefore you cannot guarantee the final result.
Some self growth goals can seem overwhelming they are the ones that you know would take a long time to achieve or theres a lot of work involved. If you have such goals, you should make them look more achievable by taking them apart into smaller, more manageable steps.
For example, if you have a goal to earn a large income, you can go about such goal this way:
1. Set a time period for a goal to be achieved (e.g. 12 months).
2. For each month set specific steps you should take to start earning a bit more income.
3. Each month you should aim for the higher income until your desired income is achieved.
Using this method no personal development goal will seem too big to achieve.
