The Three Forks formation lies below the Bakken in many of the same areas in North Dakota and Montana and saw additional testing and development by oil and gas operators active in the area during the second quarter of 2012.

Leader

Continental Resources (NYSE: CLR) has done more development in the Three Forks formation than any other operator active in the area. The company has delineated the play into four separate benches, or zones, and has drilled two successful wells into the second bench of the Three Forks in different areas on its acreage.

Continental Resources plans to drill wells into the first and third benches to test the productivity of these zones. The companys long term plan is to drill eight wells per 1280 acre section, with four into the Bakken and four into the Three Forks.

Continental Resources has grown rapidly on the strength of its Bakken program and will also benefit from the development of the Three Forks. In June 2012, the company increased its oil and gas production to over 100,000 barrels of oil equivalent (BOE) per day.

New Players

Murphy Oil (NYSE: MUR) is just starting the companys Three Forks development program and reported during the recent quarter that its first well in the Alberta Basin was producing 280 barrels of oil per day after being on production for almost seven months. The companys second completed well into the Three Forks was producing 100 barrels of oil per day after 70 days.

While these production rates might seem low to some investors, it is common for to see low rates at the start of development while operators refine their well design and completion techniques. Murphy Oil plans to drill a third well into the Three Forks in the fourth quarter of 2012.

Impact of extra farms minor, says scientist

Dr Paul Gillespie

A Cawthron Institute scientist appearing for New Zealand King Salmon yesterday told the hearing considering whether to allow the company to expand its farms that his personal opinion was that there should be no marine farming in the Marlborough Sounds.

Professionally, he believed the effects of extra salmon farms on the water column would be minor, and he was confident that monitoring systems could be set up to mitigate any effects from additional salmon farms in the Sounds.

Paul Gillespie was questioned by Sustain Our Sounds lawyer Warwick Heal about Cawthron's role in the application, and whether the company supported King Salmon's proposal.

Dr Gillespie said he did not accept any suggestion that Cawthron was pushing the company's proposal.

Cawthron scientists had assessed the application according to science. Scientists' personal views, which they kept separate from their professional views, could be totally different.

He had worked in circumstances where that was the case, and he had to be very careful.

Mr Heal asked Dr Gillespie for his personal view on the King Salmon application, and he said on a personal basis in this case, he had some bias.

"My personal opinion, I'm a reactionary. I don't like to see any development in any sort of natural environment. I'm a keen fisherman, I spend a lot of my time on the water. I have a place in the Sounds. I don't like to see any development, mussels or salmon. I like to see it wide open. That's just me.

"My professional experience and professional opinion is in my two briefings of evidence."

WHAT I READ: I never went to college, so I used books as my college. I love business and personal development books.

LAST BOOK READ: The last book I read was Entreleadership by Dave Ramsey -- awesome book about leadership and how to grow a business.

BOOK THAT MOVED ME: Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki was the first book I ever read by choice, and it began the journey of success and personal development.

ALL-TIME FAVORITES: I could easily list 15 favorite books, so this is a hard one. Think and Grow Rich by Napolean Hill, The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey, The Strangest Secret by Earl Nightingale

FAVORITE AUTHOR AND WHY: My favorite author would have to be Jim Rohn. He has a way of simplifying concepts to be used for success in life and success in business.

WHAT I READ AT THE BEACH: I can never be caught on a plane or on a vacation without some kind of fitness magazine!

IVE BEEN MEANING TO READ: Any book by Warren Buffet -- I have yet to read any of his books.

-- Originally from Sumter, Mitch Hodge moved to Florence four years ago to pursue a real estate career and found his passion in life as a Realtor and property manager at Eaddy Company. He has been married to his wonderful wife, Danielle, for three years. The Hodges have a black lab they consider their child (Sometimes its ridiculous, Mitch says). When theyre not spoiling their lab, the Hodges never pass up a chance to travel. Mitch said he and his wife consider themselves blessed to live the life they do and never take it for granted.

Ford Motor (NYSE: F) is showing high commitment in the development of its electric car segment where it proposes to put in about $135 million in the designing, engineering and production of key components. The Dearborn based automaker desires to double its battery testing capacity by next year.

The company is in the process of building an in-house production facility to fasten the development of its hybrid and electric vehicles by 25 percent and bring it to the market. Building an in-house unit instead of outsourcing the job will not only help the company to speed up the entire manufacturing process, but simultaneously reduce costs as well. This will also improve the flexibility of Ford to respond as per consumer demand

In addition, to overcome the challenge of expensive batteries and electric drive component, Ford is trying to increase the number of models that can be manufactured on a single line. For instance, in its transmission plant near Detroit, the company makes the hybrid version on one side and uses the other side of the aluminum palette to manufacture the conventional six-speed automatic transmission. Earlier, the company would buy these transmissions from a Japanese auto parts supplier Aisin. However, building it in-house allowed the second largest US automaker to trim down development costs by 20 percent as it saves on shipping and component costs.

Ford looks extremely committed in the electric car zone. The carmaker already has over 1,000 engineers working in the electric car unit. Last year the company added around 60 more engineers to its work force and is expected to employ more in the future. These engineers will exclusively be committed to conduct the R&D at the companys Dearborn lab to develop new technologies that would help in bringing out reasonably priced fuel efficient cars.

The carmakers focus in this segment is increasing. This is in response to the accelerating demand from customers who want fuel efficient electric cars with better specifications, improved battery life and infrastructure. Competition to build a greener engine is intensifying. Lets check out the current scenario.

Players going green Currently the electric vehicles segment is being dominated by archrival Toyota Motors (NYSE: TM) with 72 percent market share in the first half of the year. On the other hand Ford captured only 4 percent of the EV market. However, the second largest American carmaker has ambitious plans of giving prime attention in the operation and development of hybrids, plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles. It expects the sale of electric vehicle to constitute a quarter of its new vehicles sales by 2020 compared to a mere 3 percent in the previous year. Other than Toyota, Ford also competes with General Motors (NYSE: GM), Nissan Motor, and the new entrants Tesla Motors and Fisker Automotive.

The automaker is preparing itself to fight the market leader Toyota with its current line of offerings this fall.

So, whats in the pipeline? In May, the company launched the electric version of its Focus car which is known for its fuel efficiency and directly competes with Nissan Leaf. The 2013 Ford C-Max Hybrid and Ford C-MAX Energi plug-in Hybrid are expected to arrive this fall. The automaker claims that its C-Max can cover 570 miles compared to Toyota Prius v that can go 450 miles on a tank of gas. The automaker, which holds 500 hybrid patents, is also getting ready to launch All-new Fusion Hybrid that targets the same consumer segment as Toyota Camry Hybrid. The company also expects to start working on the Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid by this year end and aspires to make it the most fuel efficient car in the midsize segment.

tenXer Raises $3 Million in Series B Funding to Accelerate Growth in Personal Productivity Tracking

Posted: at 7:18 pm

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

tenXer, the technology company redefining personal productivity, today announced that the company has raised a $3 million series B funding round led by True Ventures, a Silicon Valley-based capital firm that invests in premiere early stage startups. Radar Partners, Khosla Ventures, and several high profile angel investors also participated in tenXers series B funding round.

In addition, Puneet Agarwal of True Ventures will also be joining the tenXer board of directors, which includes Kevin Compton of Radar Partners, tenXer co-founder Niel Robertson, and tenXer CEO Jeff Ma.

We love to partner with the most dynamic, promising entrepreneurs out there, and Jeffs background and the huge market he is attacking made investing in tenXer a no-brainer for True. We are happy to join with co-investors Radar Partners, Khosla Ventures and several angels in support of tenXer, and we are beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to work with someone of Jeffs caliber, said Puneet Agarwal, a partner at True Ventures.

tenXer plans to use the latest investment to grow the team with key hires in marketing, product management, and engineering. The company also plans to expand its service offering outside of the software engineering industry. In just three months after releasing the invite-only beta of tenXers human capital management platform, the feedback that the team has received from early users has been encouraging.

"tenXer is an essential tool for measuring the impacts of adjustments in our development practices. Our team continues to have evolving discussions on what fast, healthy, and collaborative means for our team. The insight into our work habits that tenXer provides are a vital part of our evolution," said Trey Hicks, VP of Development at Trada, a Boulder based start-up specializing in crowdsourced paid search. Hicks and his team were early tenXer beta users.

This is tenXers second round of funding. The companys Series A funding round was led by Radar Partners and was closed in September 2011. In less than a year, tenXer has grown to a team of nine and has launched their product in beta. The initial effort is geared towards software engineers and focuses on integration with heavily used tools like GitHub, Pivotal Tracker and Jira.

The quantified self is a tremendous movement that has penetrated places like health care, fitness and social planning but it is still untapped by those looking to improve at their jobs. We are going to do our best to change that, said Ma.

tenXer, the fourth company founded by serial entrepreneur Jeff Ma, was created in 2011 with the goal to reinvent human capital management from the bottom up. Ma gained notoriety as the inspiration for the main character in the book Bringing Down the House and the movie, 21. His experiences at the table shaped a fascination in how metrics and data can be used to motivate people to higher levels of achievement. Seeing a need for a better tool using similar philosophies to help people improve in their jobs, Ma started tenXer.

Early bird or night owl? Blood test reads personal body clock

Posted: at 6:13 am

Are you an early-bird-gets-the-worm kind of person, or do you need a bulldozer to shove your head off the pillow each morning?

Scientists in Japan say they can tell the setting of your bodys circadian clock just by examining a small blood sample.

In a report published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers said they have developed a convenient method of estimating an individuals personal body time by examining the concentration of hormones and amino acids in two blood samples taken 12 hours apart.

The development could carry great benefit for those who are dieting, or taking medication with severe side effects: Certain anti-cancer drugs are most potent when taken at specific body-times, and toxic at others.

Internal body time refers to the molecular time-keeping mechanisms that regulate the sleep, digestion and metabolic processes of all mammals.

While scientists have long known that personal body times can vary by as many as 12 hours between individuals -- the difference between a so-called morning lark or night owl -- they have found it difficult to determine an individual's exact circadian clock setting. The current method is invasive and time-consuming -- medical workers must draw a persons blood on an hourly basis for up to 24 hours, and track levels of the hormone melatonin.

The studys lead author, Takeya Kasukawa, a genomicist with the RIKEN Center for Developmental Biology in Kobe, Japan, wrote that the new method examines the level of 50 different metabolites and compares them to a timetable. Blood must only be taken twice in a 24-hour period. The method pinpoints personal body time to within three hours, the authors wrote.

The study, and formulation of the timetable charts, was based on the observation of six healthy male volunteers in their 20s.

An individuals circadian rhythm can be altered by shift work, jet lag or an irregular lifestyle. Determining a persons body clock setting is important for the administration of medicine, and researchers said it could also have in impact on weight gain and dieting.

Studies with mice concluded that the animals got fatter while eating at the wrong time for their circadian rhythms. These results suggest that food intake at different body times can alleviate or exacerbate diet-induced obesity, those authors wrote.

Rasika Somarathna and N P Rajadurai in Ratnapura

* Govt policy guided by peoples well-being

* Equity in development will be ensured

Development projects will not be carried out at the cost of the environment or by causing hardships to the people, although the country is on the path of rapid economic development, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said.

The President said projects which will cause loss of personal property on a large scale and environment degradation will be rejected and added his government was not prepared to implement projects which would cause hardships to a section of the people to benefit others.

He said certain Opposition elements were trying to obtain political mileage from the issue while spreading falsehoods to mislead the people. The governments policy in respect of all affairs will continue to be guided by the vital interests and well- being of the people. This will not yield to any other consideration, he said.

President Rajapaksa was speaking at the United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) election rally in support of its candidates contesting the upcoming polls from the Ratnapura district to the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council on Saturday.

The President said the government has not neglected any village.

Development activities are taking place in all of them in line with the policy of achieving equity in development, he said.

Speaking on the upcoming PC polls, President Rajapaksa said Provincial Councils and other local government bodies were playing a very constructive role in developing villages, districts and provinces.
