Hain Celestial to Gain on Higher Demand for Organic Food – Analyst Blog

Posted: at 11:52 pm

without comments

Increasing appetite for organic products is bringing natural and organic food companies in the limelight, and The Hain Celestial Group, Inc. ( HAIN ) is not any exception. Tapping strategic opportunities, the company constantly endeavors to expand its footprint in organic and natural products and in turn, "Change the Way the World Eats."

Hain Celestial's latest attempt is the acquisition of Tilda Limited, a renowned name in Basmati rice and Rudi's Organic Bakery, one of the leading organic and gluten-free companies. Recently, it fully acquired Hain Pure Protein Corporation.

Earlier, the company had acquired leading packaged grocery brands - Hartley's, Gale's, Robertson's, Frank Cooper's and Sun-Pat - from Premier Foods plc. The company also acquired Ella's Kitchen Group Limited that offers organic baby food products under approximately 80 brands and in easy-to-carry pouches.

A leader in natural food and personal care product categories with an extensive portfolio of well-known brands and strong fundamentals, Hain Celestial is poised to surge as the economy gradually revives and demand for organic food increases.

If we look at the company's earnings surprise history over the last 12 quarters, Hain Celestial has topped the Zacks Consensus Estimate by an average of 3.2%, including an earnings surprise of 1.1% in fourth-quarter fiscal 2014. In the last concluded quarter, the company posted earnings of 90 cents a share that came a penny ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate and surged 39% year over year. Management cited that strong top-line growth, integration of acquired businesses and focus on high margin carrying brands led to bottom-line growth.

For fiscal 2015, management now anticipates sales in the range of $2,725 million to $2,800 million, up 27% to 30% from fiscal 2014. Earnings per share are expected between $3.72 and $3.90, representing a year-over-year increase of 17% to 23%.

Hain Celestial's strategic investments coupled with continued efforts to contain costs, increase productivity, and enhance cash flows and margins enabled it to deliver healthy results. The company expects to sustain its momentum as it remains well positioned to capitalize on the growing global demand for organic products through acquisitions, which have been crucial in building market share.

Going forward, we believe that the company will remain focused on increasing productivity and pricing efficiency. Moreover, Hain Celestial has undertaken a number of initiatives to improve its performance and position itself on the growth trajectory. The company's Stock Keeping Unit (SKU) rationalization program has helped in eliminating SKUs, which had lower sales volume or weak margins.

Players such as The Kroger Co. ( KR ), Campbell Soup Company ( CPB ) and Sprouts Farmers Market, Inc. ( SFM ) are entering as well as expanding their presence in the organic and natural food business.

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE:

2-Oct-2014

Contact: Susan V. Fisk sfisk@sciencesocieties.org 608-273-8091 American Society of Agronomy @ASA_CSSA_SSSA

Oct. 1, 2014Organic agriculture is growing rapidly in adoption by producers and consumers. However, it is not widely understood in terms of its potential for contributing to food security, economic development, and environmental health. To address this knowledge gap, "Innovations in Organic Food Systems for Sustainable Production & Enhanced Ecosystem Services," a two-day conference, will be held Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 1-2, 2014, in Long Beach, CA. The conference is sponsored by the American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America and Soil Science Society of America together with the Co-operative Research Program on Biological Resource Management for Sustainable Agricultural Systems under the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, (OECD).

This workshop will bring together leaders in organic agricultural systems from around the world to assess the current state of knowledge about innovations that enhance both sustainable food production and ecosystem services. Eighteen scientists from 12 countries will present the latest findings from studies of organic systems, and participants will discuss the implications for both practice and policy.

"We felt it was important to organize this workshop to synthesize, across international boundaries, our current state of knowledge about how organic agriculture and food systems can best contribute to society goals of sustainable food production and enhanced ecosystem services," says conference coordinator Ellen Mallory. "The workshop is structured expressly to generate discussion among participants, to identify research, extension, and policy needs, and to foster future partnerships."

Mallory, an associate professor at University of Maine, is coordinating the workshop along with Patrick Carr (North Dakota State University) and Kathleen Delate (Iowa State University) representing ASA; Mathieu Ngouajio of USDA-NIFA; and Lise Andreasen of ICROFS, Denmark.

Other program sponsors are the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA-NIFA) and the International Centre for Research in Organic Food Systems (ICROFS).

For more information about the Grand Challenges, Great Solutions meeting sponsored by American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America, and the Soil Science Society of America, visit https://www.acsmeetings.org/. Media are invited to attend the conference. Pre-registration by Oct. 20, 2014, is required. Visit https://www.acsmeetings.org/newsroom for registration information.

To speak with Dr. Mallory, contact Susan V. Fisk, 608-273-8091, sfisk@sciencesocieties.org to arrange an interview.

Organic Foods: Understanding Organic Food Labels, Benefits …

Posted: at 9:55 pm

Understanding the Benefits and Making Smarter Organic Food Choices Organic food has become very popular. But navigating the maze of organic food labels, benefits, and claims can be confusing. Is organic food really healthier? Is it more nutritious? What do all the labels mean? Why is it so expensive? This guide can help you make better choices about which organic foods are healthier for you and better for the environment, and how you can afford to incorporate more organic food into your diet. What is organic food?

Making a commitment to healthy eating is a great start towards a healthier life. Beyond eating more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and good fats, however, there is the question of food safety, nutrition, and sustainability. How foods are grown or raised can impact both your health and the environment. This brings up the questions: What is the difference between organic foods and conventionally grown foods? Is organic always best? What about locally grown foods?

The term organic refers to the way agricultural products are grown and processed. Specific requirements must be met and maintained in order for products to be labeled as "organic."

Organic crops must be grown in safe soil, have no modifications, and must remain separate from conventional products. Farmers are not allowed to use synthetic pesticides, bioengineered genes (GMOs), petroleum-based fertilizers, and sewage sludge-based fertilizers.

Organic livestock must have access to the outdoors and be given organic feed. They may not be given antibiotics, growth hormones, or any animal-by-products.

Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) or genetically engineered (GE) foods are plants or animals whose DNA has been altered. These products have undergone only short-term testing to determine their effects on humans and the environment.

In most countries, organic products do not intentionally contain GMOs.

Although the U.S. does not require GM or GE foods to be labeled, you can still find out whether or not your produce is genetically engineered by looking at its PLU (price lookup) code on the sticky label added to grocery store produce:

The Truth About Organic Foods – Pros and Cons of Organic …

Posted: at 9:55 pm

without comments

The organic-food business is booming: About 70 percent of Americans buy organic food occasionally, and nearly one quarter buy it every week, according to the Hartman Group, a market research firm. For most of us, the reason is simple: We want natural food that's better for us and for the environment, says Samuel Fromartz, author of Organic, Inc. But buying organic can cost you as much as 50 percent more so read on to know when it's worth it.

What is organic food, anyway? Though organic food can be produced with certain synthetic ingredients, it must adhere to specific standards regulated by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Crops are generally grown without synthetic pesticides, artificial fertilizers, irradiation (a form of radiation used to kill bacteria), or biotechnology. Animals on organic farms eat organically grown feed, aren't confined 100 percent of the time (as they sometimes are on conventional farms), and are raised without antibiotics or synthetic growth hormones.

Is organic food better for me? Organic foods may have higher nutritional value than conventional food, according to some research. The reason: In the absence of pesticides and fertilizers, plants boost their production of the phytochemicals (vitamins and antioxidants) that strengthen their resistance to bugs and weeds. Some studies have linked pesticides in our food to everything from headaches to cancer to birth defects but many experts maintain that the levels in conventional food are safe for most healthy adults. Even low-level pesticide exposure, however, can be significantly more toxic for fetuses and children (due to their less-developed immune systems) and for pregnant women (it puts added strain on their already taxed organs), according to a report by the National Academy of Sciences.

Pesticide contamination isn't as much of a concern in meats and dairy products (animals may consume some pesticides, depending on their diet), but many scientists are concerned about the antibiotics being given to most farm animals: Many are the same antibiotics humans rely on, and overuse of these drugs has already enabled bacteria to develop resistance to them, rendering them less effective in fighting infection, says Chuck Benbrook, Ph.D., chief scientist at the Organic Center, a nonprofit research organization.

Is buying organic better for the environment? Organic farming reduces pollutants in groundwater and creates richer soil that aids plant growth while reducing erosion, according to the Organic Trade Association. It also decreases pesticides that can end up in your drinking glass; in some cities, pesticides in tap water have been measured at unsafe levels for weeks at a time, according to an analysis performed by the Environmental Working Group (EWG). (To find out about the safety of your tap water, visit the EWG website at ewg.org/tapwater/yourwater.) Plus, organic farming used 50 percent less energy than conventional farming methods in one 15-year study.

When is it worth the splurge? If you can afford it, buy local and organic, recommends Fromartz. Farmers' markets carry reasonably priced locally grown organic and conventional food; to find one in your area, go to localharvest.org. If you can't always afford organic, do spend the extra money when it comes to what the EWG calls the "dirty dozen": peaches, strawberries, nectarines, apples, spinach, celery, pears, sweet bell peppers, cherries, potatoes, lettuce, and imported grapes. These fragile fruits and vegetables often require more pesticides to fight off bugs compared to hardier produce, such as asparagus and broccoli. Download a list of produce ranked by pesticide contamination at foodnews.org, an EWG website.

When shopping for organic foods, always look for the USDA seal on any kind of packaged food. For meat and dairy, this seal ensures you're getting antibiotic- and hormone-free products. When buying meat or produce that isn't packaged, look for a sign stating that it's organic, or ask the store clerk.

Edmonton’s Organic Box is set to expand operations to provincially inspected food hub

Posted: at 9:55 pm

Danny Turner and his wife began the Organic Box in 2010, and while the demand for a weekly organic food delivery service in Edmonton grew, so too did the need for a larger facility.

For the last few years, weve been hearing loud and clear that what Edmonton needs is a food hub, and were doing it, Turner said.

After more than four years in its current location, the Organic Box will be moving is operations to a new 17,000 sq.-ft. hub (around three times the size of its present space) in east Edmonton.

After a year of planning and organizing funds (some sourced from the Social Enterprise Fund and the Development Bank of Canada), the organizations new home will become a reality in the first half of October and will be provincially inspected, Turner said.

Our first mission is to improve and grow the local organic food production in Alberta, and so thats where we focus a lot of our energy, he said, citing the produce department, all of which is organic and 95% of which is coming from Alberta and British Columbia.

In its present location, the Organic Box runs at about 150% of capacity, employing around 50 workers, who are working almost on top of each other.

According to Turner, the groups new home wont mean new hires; instead, it will give its current workers more space to make the team more efficient.

This new place will give us the chance to operate more efficiently and to continue to grow our customer base, he said.

The idea behind a food hub of this kind is to create and provide infrastructure and make some of it available to small producers of food from Edmonton and area, Turner said.
