Organic fare is usually synonymous with such towns as LA, New York and DC, but you were probably unaware that Pittsburgh has an excellent organic food scene all its own. From farm-to-table enterprises, to tiny establishments that shot their section of the city to the forefront of Pittsburghs collective psyche, the restaurants listed below were selected for their outstanding menus, service and unbelievably fresh fare. Check out the top five below and be sure to visit to support these local eateries, and celebrate keeping your nutrition out of the big-box grocery.
Point Brugge Cafe 401 Hastings St. Pittsburgh, PA 15206 (412) 441-3334 http://www.pointbrugge.com
A quaint little neighborhood bistro, tucked right into the heart of Point Breeze, is just what the chef ordered. Inspired by Belgian cuisine (its cousin restaurant, Park Bruges, is more of a French establishment), Point Brugge is a wonderful little addition to the East End. With organic, locally-sourced options, youll be glad you tried it. PBCs claim to fame is its delicious mussels flown in weekly from Prince Edward Island, which are served three different ways, with unlimited crusty bread to top off the meal.
Legume 214 N. Craig St. Pittsburgh, PA 15213 (412) 621-2700 http://www.legumebistro.com A restaurant with an ever-rotating menu to accommodate seasonal fare is a-okay with Pittsburghers so well received, in fact, that Legume was named one of Pittsburghs best new restaurants in 2008. Legumes menu is inspired by its customers and growers, and the owners always try to please the community. Charmingly enough, Legume offers demonstrations throughout the year, such as beekeeping demonstrations, pickling classes, and fun, themed events. The establishments menu is a little pricey, but if youre looking for a light bite that wont crush your wallet. Head down during lunchtime when Legumes exquisite dishes start out smaller, and some are priced at $9.
Eleven 1150 Smallman St. Pittsburgh, PA 15222 (412) 201-5656 http://www.elevenck.com
Chilled pea and asparagus soup, local tomato salad, semolina gnocchi and seared salmon are just a sample of the fine dining experience that youll enjoy at Pittsburghs own Eleven. Part of the uber-visible Big Burrito Group (which also includes Umi, Soba and Kaya), Eleven is an elegant, well-appointed break from the typical sandwich-and-chain shoppes that line downtown Pittsburgh. Featuring organic, local fare and an exquisite chefs tasting menu, your evening (or even mid-afternoon lunch) will be the ultimate in fine dining, from your bar-recommended beverage to sumptuous dessert.

Eden 735 Copeland St. Pittsburgh, PA 15232 (412) 802-7070 http://www.edenpitt.com
With a specialized focus on raw fare, Eden is a surprising interloper on Shadysides ethnic radar. Eden is a farm-to-table eatery that puts great emphasis both on the raw/live food movement and also the RAISE campaign (a food-service industry idea that raises the standard of the treatment of food-service employees). Raw and/or live food might sound somewhat unappetizing, but trust that chef Hilary Zozula only has her customers palates at the forefront of her mind. Cheesecakes, gorgeous gnocchi dishes and even pierogi await your taste buds, and the best part of Eden is that its a BYOB establishment with no corkage fee.

Living in the Bay Area can be a veritable paradise for the health-conscious. Eating organically is one way to reduce your intake of pesticides. The Bay Area is located adjacent to an area ripe with fertile farmland and is full of people passionate about creating a sustainable food system. Catering to both vegetarians and omnivores, here is a list of five of the best restaurants with organic food in the Bay Area.
Since opening its doors in 1971, Chez Panisse has been devoted to serving only the finest locally sourced, seasonal, organic foods. The menu changes daily depending on which foods are freshest. There is a prix fixe menu each evening, with fancier fare offered Friday and Saturday, and a more rustic dinner on Mondays. The restaurant is open Monday through Saturday and accepts reservations up to one month in advance.
Jesse Ziff Cool boasts an impressive 35-year Peninsula-area career in organic food. With multiple restaurants, cookbooks and a thriving catering business, Cool has been a local pioneer in the sustainable foods movement. Flea Street Caf, like all of Cools business ventures, is entirely devoted to locally sourced, sustainable, organic ingredients. Vegetarians and meat lovers alike will delight in Flea Streets vibrant seasonal offerings with everything from braised short ribs to stuffed squash blossoms.
Located on the Marina in Fort Mason, Greens Restaurant offers diners some of the most picturesque views of the San Francisco Bay. A 35-year-old fixture in the city, Greens serves up organic all-vegetarian fare. Much of the fresh produce used in the restaurant comes from the North Bays Green Gulch Farm. With generous portions and a diverse menu, omnivores will not miss the meat. Arrive early for dinner to snag a table with a view of the sparkling bay and Marin Headlands.
Millennium serves up some of the finest gourmet vegetarian fare in the Bay Area. The restaurant is dedicated to a completely sustainable menu which entails everything from organic ingredients that are locally sourced, to recycling and composting the restaurants waste. No dishes contain animal ingredients, so vegans can relax with a rare opportunity to enjoy everything on the menu. Several dining options are available from a five-course chefs tasting menu, to the Frugal Foodie meal which includes an appetizer, entre and dessert. Pre-selected wine pairings are available for an additional charge.
Located in downtown Berkeley, Pathos dishes up a selection authentic organic Greek favorites ranging from moussaka to dolmades. The wine list contains a satisfying selection of Greek wines as well as ouzo and metaxa. Diners can enjoy a variety of delicious lamb and beef dishes, as well as a few vegetarian options. Pathos is open Wednesday through Sunday and reservations are recommended.

Mainstream reporting lately gives a pass to the pesticide industry that pours millions into lobbying government and media elites and defeating voter ballot initiatives to require labeling of GMO foods.

When I sat down with Sutton Kiplinger, Greater Boston Regional Director of The Food Project, she narrowed in on the challenge for the food movement.
We need to stop looking at the Earth as a fearful foe that can only be tamed with science, domination, and chemicals. We also need to stop looking at our hunger as something that can be satisfied with anything edible, rather than real, wholesome organic food.
