A Shining Organic Food Retailer to Invest In

Posted: at 6:50 pm

The organic food market is on an upsurge. People have become health conscious and want to buy food that is made of natural ingredients. Therefore, this industry is doing really well. Customers are willing to pay a premium, too, for the natural products. However, this has also resulted in a large number of players in the industry, leading to stiff competition among them.

Whole Foods Market (WFM) is a premium food retailer, which offers organic and natural food to the affluent part of the society. However, it faces competition from many new players, which affected its results. Nonetheless, it has managed to put a blockbuster fourth quarter results recently, which beat the Streets expectations. Lets check.

Further details

Driven by higher demand and various strategies undertaken, revenue surged 9% to $3.26 billion over last year. The company managed to register an increase in the top line despite its product prices being lowered, as people continued to flock into its stores. Its same-store sales grew by 3.1%, driven by a 1.3% increase in the number of transactions and 1.8% jump in the basket size of the customers.

But the top line failed to meet the analysts expectations. It decreased its product prices mainly because of increased competition from big box retailers such as Kroger as well as from players such as Sprouts Farmers Market. Because of the lower prices offered by such retailers, Whole Foods was unable to attract customers.

Lower prices also affected the margins. Gross margins fell to 35.4% from 35.7% in the previous year. But the company managed to keep its bottom line in check. Earnings jumped to $0.35 per share as compared to the earnings of $0.32 per share in the previous year. The bottom line was also in line with the expectations of the analysts.

Host of efforts made

In order to win back its customers, Whole Foods made a large number of efforts. First, it is focusing on responsibly grown fresh produce, which will be grown under certain quality conditions, making its products more reliable. Also, it will enable the company to increase its prices once again.

Furthermore, it started with the concept of having wine bars in its stores, which is not present at any of the grocers stores. Also, it started with home delivery services of premium wines as well as some other products. It has also taken initiatives including one hour delivery in some cities.

The company is also looking at expanding its store base. It opened 13 new stores during the quarter and 38 new stores in the entire year. It plans to renovate 70% of its older stores too.

FBR Staff Writer Published 19 November 2014

US-based food processing company Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) has completed the previously announced acquisition of natural and organic food producer Specialty Commodities (SCI) for $191m.

Specialty Commodities processes and distributes healthy ingredients, including nuts, fruits, seeds, legumes and ancient grains for snack, ice cream, cereal, nutrition bar, health food, bakery, pet food and bird food producers.

Specialty Commodities will now operate as a part of ADM's new WILD Flavors and Specialty Ingredients business unit. Its majority owner is Goldner Hawn Johnson & Morrison.

ADM's WILD Flavors and Specialty Ingredients business unit president Greg Morris said: "We are continuing to expand our specialty ingredients portfolio to better serve our customers, improve returns and reduce the volatility of our earnings.

"Now that Specialty Commodities has joined ADM, we'll be looking at ways to combine SCI's healthy ingredients with ADM's existing products to offer our customers a wider and fuller range of products."

Ken Campbell, formerly ADM's North American Oilseeds vice president, has been named president, Specialty Commodities and Kevin Andreson, Specialty Commodities' former chief operating officer, has been appointed ADM's Specialty Commodities vice president.

CURRENT trends and strategies on organic food production and technology were among the highlights in Monday's opening of the 4th Regional Organic Agri-Fair Seminar and Exhibits.

With the Central Philippine University (CPU) as returning host, the weeklong event is led by the school in partnership with the Department of Agriculture (DA)-Western Visayas office.

During the event, themed Organic Agriculture: Opportunities and Challenges in Asean 2015, industry advocates are one in saying that the agri-fair is important in the coming Asean integration.

The opportunity for farmers and local government units to develop agricultural technology that is in line with the advocacy of organic food production will be availed at the technology and livelihood seminars prepared by the organizers, said the event organizers in a press release.

The weeklong agri-fair kicked off with seminars and art contests. A symbolic 4-K fun run also gathered running enthusiasts, agency representatives and students. (With reports from Cyrus Natividad)

Let them eat cake: Vivienne Westwood says her comments on food have been misunderstood.

Dame Vivienne Westwood says people should eat less so they can afford organic food.

Westwood made the comments on Wednesday after delivering a petition to Downing Street protesting against genetically modified food in the UK, reportstheIndependent.

Following her comments, BBC Radio 5 Live's Dino Sofos pointed out a legitimate flaw in her argument: not everyone can afford to eat organic food.

To this, she simply replied, "Eat less".

Sofos pointed out to the millionaire designer that people are already going to food banks because they can't afford to buy food.

"They don't have any choice - this is the point, isn't it," she said.

"You've got all these processed foods, which is the main reason people are getting fat. They're not actually good for you - they don't give you strength, they give you weight.

"I eat vegetables and fruit. I don't eat meat. I believe meat is bad for me so I don't eat it. It's also bad for the animals.
