Snchez: Profits, people and the environment

THE world is indeed getting organic. Consumers are supporting the movement from their pockets. The recent 9th Negros Island Organic Farmers Festival is the proof of the pudding in the eating of organically-produced food.

The NIOFF, with the theme One Negros, One Green Economy, has gathered 216 exhibitors compared to 2013 where only 156 joined. The five-day event grossed P3.18 million. Last year, the organic farming festival earned P2.556 million.

Ramon Uy Jr., president of Organik na Negros! Organic Producers and Retailers Association (Onopra), said that after the reported P3.18 million earnings, more people are still coming to buy their products even during its official last day on November 23, 2014.

As vice president of Onopra, allow me to express our collective thanks to the organic food producers and processors, upland farmers, indigenous peoples, cooperatives, local government units, non-government organizations, and peoples organizations who took part in the 9th NIOFF.

I took part in the preparations for the event. My task was to invite resource persons from the UNs Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Mountain Partnership.

In behalf of the NIOFF organizers, let me express our collective thanks to the Rome-based MP Secretariat colleagues Rosa Laura, Romeo Thomas Hofer, Sara Manuelli, and Antonella Sorrentino. Also to FAOs Dr. Eulito Bautista who dropped other prior commitments to be with us in Bacolod for the NIOFF. Let us have more of this cooperation in developing the Negrense green, especially its mountain, economy.

Likewise, I express our collective thanks to the Non-Timber Forest Product-Exchange Programme Philippines. Drs. Ramon Razal and Erwin Diloy, and to anthropologist Mara Teresa Miks de Guia-Padilla for sharing with us your expertise.

The 9th NIOFF showed that Negros Islands emerging economy can make profits, people and the environment come together, not necessarily in opposition to one another. Negrenses can face the Asean Economic Community when we become a link to the regional economic integration in 2015.

We will face it building the green economy. As the FAO noted, global temperatures rise and weather patterns become more erratic, the intersection between climate change and agriculture is crucial to understanding the role agriculture plays in contributing to and mitigating global warming.

Carbon sequestration, lower-input of fossil fuel dependent resources, and use of renewable energy all present opportunities for organic agriculture to lead the way in reducing energy consumption and mitigating the negative effects of energy emissions.

Gurgaon gets first organic food market, minus middlemen

Posted: at 12:50 pm

GURGAON: The Millennium City on Sunday got its first taste of organic produce being sold in a weekly market, where consumers brought vegetables and fruits directly from farmers, thereby taking middlemen out of the equation.

Organized by the Sushant Lok RWA at the community centre, the market brought together 11 farmers from nearby areas like Sohna, Damdama and Faridabad, who sold lab-tested organic produce to the residents.

The farmers were allowed to charge customers 20% higher than what they charge a middleman. "If a farmer sells the produce at Rs100 per kg to a middleman, we allowed him to sell it for Rs120 per kg to the customer, who normally gets it at mark up of 50-60%," said Sudhir Sachdeva, a member of the RWA.

Adarsh, a farmer, said that contrary to popular perception, costs are lower in organic farming, and it is only the demand-supply dynamic that drives up prices. "Farmers use manure, neem oil and earthworms to increase soil fertility. Such fertilizers and pest-control solutions are easily available at affordable prices," he said, adding that if such markets are held regularly, the cost would come down.

Sachdeva, who floated the idea of an organic market, said that while packed foods contain certification of 'organic produce', there was no check on vegetables in the markets. He said that the RWA members visited the farms and got the samples tested before allotting them space. Ravi, who owns a four acre organic farm in Sohna, said, "One should visit a farm to personally check whether vegetable are organically produced. I am glad that representatives from the RWA visited my farm. It helps in gaining trust of the customer."

And judging by the enthusiastic response, the organic market is here to stay. On Sunday, over 300 people shopped at the market with around 350 kg of vegetables and fruits being sold. Sachdeva said holding the market near the Raahgiri venue also helped in getting it noticed as many health-conscious people visit the area.

The RWA plans to hold the organic market every Sunday, and if the response continues to be encouraging, a daily market may also be in the offing. "The idea is to make it bigger and better. Next week, we will organize a health talk for elderly and a gardening session for kids to teach them to grow fruits and veggies at home. The session will be taken by the farmers," said Sachdeva.

Although Sachdeva said that there are currently no plans to collaborate with other associations, some RWAs have welcomed the move. RWA president of Sector 15 (Part I), Ramesh Vashisht said they too would be keen to organize an organic market in their society.

President of Sector 14 RWA, K S Yadav, said, "We organize a vegetable market every Thursday and Sunday. Having organic produce in the market is a good idea. But it is important to ensure that the produce is actually grown organically."

For the Holidays: Change Your Beliefs Around GMOs

Posted: November 24, 2014 at 7:48 pm

Recently re-published byAgriPulse, three renowned guest authors wrote a great opinion piecein the Des Moines Register on the beliefs and narratives aroundGMOs and organic food.

The authors include Nina Fedoroff, Ph.D., a plant biologist who hasserved as science and technology adviser to the secretary of state from 2007-10, Ken Cassman, Ph.D., an international agronomist at theUniversityofNebraska, and Marshall Matz, former counsel to the U.S. Senate Agriculture Committee specializing in nutrition and food security.

In their piece, The Ghost of Thanksgiving Future, the experts discuss while 2014looks tobeanabundant Thanksgiving, dramatic change in beliefs will be needed if we are expected to feed9 or so billion at the global dinner table on Thanksgiving 2050:

The beliefs and narratives that need rethinking are those around GMOs and organic food.

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are crop plants and animals improved by modern molecular techniques, rather than older, often less precise methods. GM crops, such as insect-resistant corn and cotton, have been in commercial production for almost two decades. They are now grown in 27 countries on more than 400 million acres by 18 million farmers, more than 90 percent of whom are resource-poor, small-holder farmers.

GM crops have increased farm income, reduced pesticide use, soil erosion and carbon dioxide emission, and benefited consumers by decreasing fungal toxin contamination of corn, they argue.

Its a fact that neither people nor animals have been harmed by consuming food or feed containing GM ingredients. Even decade ago, we thought that people would be reassured as evidence grew, as it has, that GM crops are safe. But thats not what happened. Instead, more and more people have come to believe that they are dangerous.

These attributes of GMOs are especially important since its been estimated that to meet the challenge of global food security, the worlds farmers will have to produce more food in the next 50 years than all theyve produced in the last 10,000 years combined.

So how does changing our belief system around GMOs and organicshelpto feed a rapidly growing population? The authors address:

Our belief systems and narratives matter, perhaps more than ever in the age of electronic social media. The organic food industry supplies a mere 4 percent of our food, but amplifies its message by promulgating the myth that organic food is more healthful and environmentally sound.
