Summer Reading for Kids with Dyslexia

The summer months are important to your child's academic development in two ways. First, childrens need to be reminded of what they learned during the school year so that they remember it when they return in the fall. Second, and perhaps more important, children with dyslexia can discover the joys of reading and other academic skills in the relaxed summer season.

Choosing the appropriate summer camp for your child can be challenging for parents. Learn from one mother's experience: unable to find the right summer program for her child with LD, Ann Cathcart started a camp herself to create exactly what she wanted for her son. Here are her tips on what to look for in a summer camp experience for your child with learning differences.

Meet Cece Bell, the award-winning author and illustrator of children's books including El Deafo, which won a Newbery Honor and the Geisel Award in 2015. In this funny, poignant graphic novel memoir, Bell chronicles her hearing loss at a young age and her subsequent experiences with the Phonic Ear, a very powerful and very awkward hearing aid.

Georgia was hard-hit by the recession. However, the Peach State's recovery has recently started to pick up steam. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce's Bureau of Economic Analysis, while the state's economy overall grew at a rate of 1.8 percent in 2013, and growth during the fourth quarter of 2013 was an impressive 3.9 percent.

Here are a handful of highlight careers in the state of Georgia according to total in-state employment and 2013 median annual income as reported by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics:

Here's a roundup of the top programs and degrees in state

These degrees' popularity may stem in part from the fact that the skills and knowledge gained are highly transferable. Online schools in GA offering these majors may help students prepare for careers in many different occupations.

Perhaps the fact that the popular TV series The Walking Dead is filmed in Georgia plays a part, but data indicates more than 4,000 students graduated with degrees in the visual and performing arts during 2012-2013.

The state has almost 70 public colleges, universities, and technical colleges. Public education is governed by the University System of Georgia (USG), which is overseen by the Georgia Board of Regents. The USG has over 318,000 students enrolled, making it the fourth-largest university system in the U.S.

In addition to the public system, Georgia is also home to over 45 private post-secondary institutions, including technical and vocational schools. Georgia's roster of institutions of higher education includes several historically black schools.

By far the most populous city in Georgia is its capital, Atlanta. The other cities in Georgia's top five by population are Columbus, Augusta, Macon and Savannah. Students living in or near these cities may have many choices of post-secondary institutions. However, with many colleges and online schools in Georgia offering online programs, living in more rural areas may be less of a barrier to the pursuit of an education than it has been in the past.

In 2013-2014, tuition and fees costs in Georgia averaged the following by institution type:

Keep in mind prices may vary by individual institutions. Comparatively, Georgia may have a lower cost of living than more urban areas of the country like California or the northeast. This makes the Peach State an attractive option for those interested in pursuing higher education.

The state lottery also funds the HOPE Scholarship, and all Georgia residents who have graduated from high school or earned a General Educational Development certificate are eligible for this award. Eligibility requirements also include maintaining a 3.2 or higher grade point average and attending a public college or university in the state. The Georgia Student Finance Commission is another resource for identifying financial aid for which students might be eligible.Of course, eligible students should also file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Georgia is a member of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and its affiliate organization, the Southern Association of Community, Junior and Technical Colleges. Students should factor an institution's accreditation status during their college or university selection process. This is because schools operating without accreditation may not provide students with the skills necessary to obtain a job in today's competitive market. Post-secondary education can be an expensive undertaking, so like any other investment, students should do the research necessary to ensure they are getting the most bang for their proverbial (and literal) buck.

Online Education – US News & World Report

Posted: April 10, 2016 at 4:41 pm

Online colleges offer many different types of undergraduate and graduate degrees, and have benefits and drawbacks for prospective students to consider.

Experts say the quality of an education from an online college is, in many cases, just as high as one pursued in person, and that online learning offers the ability to communicate with a professor and other students through technology. Enrollment in online courses has grown each year for more than a decade.

People interested in getting an online college degree, especially working adults looking to go back to school, should consider the flexibility of online learning given their responsibilities outside the classroom. Those with full-time jobs and families might find a part-time online degree program ideal, enabling them to juggle their various daily responsibilities without having to commute to a physical classroom. In many online degree programs, students can access course material on their own time and in a location of their choice, regardless of their distance from a physical campus.

Prospective online college students should be aware that an online program isnt always less expensive than one earned in person and federal financial aid may be available for those who take enough credits.

Online learning also has its downsides, and not every subject is suited for online education. Prospective students should be on the lookout for scams, which includes making sure a program is accredited. Pursuing an online college degree requires more personal responsibility from students as they complete assignments and group work based on their own schedule. Online students also need to be prepared to effectively manage their time. And though communication with instructors and students is possible through electronic means, prospective students should weigh whether they want to sacrifice face-to-face interaction for the flexibility online education provides.

Texas Virtual School Network – Texas Education Agency

The Texas Virtual School Network (TxVSN) provides Texas students and schools with equitable access to quality online courses and instructors. It is a valuable resource for interactive, collaborative, instructor-led online courses taught by state-certified and appropriately credentialed teachers trained in effective online instruction.

TEA under the leadership of the commissioner of education, administers the TxVSN, sets standards for and approves TxVSN courses and professional development for online teachers, and has fiscal responsibility for the network. Education Service Center (ESC) Region 10 oversees the day-to-day operations of the TxVSN network. The TxVSN is made up of two componentsthe TxVSN statewide catalog of supplemental high school courses and the full-time TxVSN online schools program.

The TxVSN statewide course catalog provides supplemental online courses for high school graduation to public school age students. The catalog offers students across the state opportunities to enroll in high school, Advanced Placement, and dual-credit courses offered through the network by approved providers. The TxVSN catalog works in partnership with public schools to meet the needs of students. To view available courses, visit the TxVSNonline course catalog. To learn more, visit the TxVSN website.

The TxVSN Online Schools (OLS) program offers free,full-time virtual instructionto eligible Texas public school students in grades 3-12 who enroll in one of the six TEA-accredited public schools approved to participate in the program. Instruction provided through the TxVSN OLS is 100 percent virtual. Students in the program are not required to be physically present on campus during instruction.

All courses offered through the TxVSN must meet the state curriculum requirements, known as the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills or TEKS, and the International Association for K-12 Online Learning (iNACOL)National Standards of Quality for Online Courses (outside source).Courses are also reviewed for alignment withaccessibility standards(PDF, 232.02 KB). TxVSN courses are taught by teachers who are Texas-certified in the content area and grade level of the course or meet the credentialing requirements of the associated institution of higher education. They are also trained in best practices for delivering online instruction. Students do not need to be physically present at school during instruction of TxVSN courses.

Distance Learning : Texas State University

Posted: at 8:45 pm

The Office of Distance and Extended Learning, in addition to administering the self-pacedcorrespondence, extension, and continuing education programs, provides information on Texas State's distance learning programs, courses, initiatives, and resources.

Distance education is a formal educational process in which the majority of instruction (interaction between students and instructors and among students) in a course occurs when students and instructors are not in the same place. At Texas State, most distance education courses are offered via TRACS, an Internet-based learning management system for delivering course materials, facilitating class discussions, implementing assignments and quizzes, and supporting learning outcomes. Courses typically fit into one of two categories:

Fully online course - A course which may have mandatory face-to-face sessions totaling no more than 15 percent of the planned instructional time. Examples of face-to-face sessions include orientation, laboratory, exam review, or an in-person test.

Hybrid course - A course in which a majority (more than 50 percent but less than 85 percent) of the planned instructional time occurs when the students and instructor are not in the same place. Mandatory face-to-face sessions may total up to 49 percent of planned instructional time.

Many states have prescribed an authorization process for institutions from other states that deliver online courses to their state residents. Therefore, before accepting enrollments for online and correspondence self-pacedcourses from students residing outside of Texas and not planning on relocating to Texas, Texas State must be in compliance with the distance learning regulations of the states in which students reside.

For more information on state authorization and for a list of states in which Texas State is in compliance with state authorization rules, visit the State Authorization page.

Texas State School of Social Work's online MSW (Master of Social Work) program was ranked 11th among Top Colleges for Online Social Work Programs by BestColleges.com. These rankings are based on several factors, including school and program reputation, student satisfaction, peer and instructional quality, and overall affordability.

See the Schedule of Classes for a list of courses offered online or in a hybrid format through TRACS, on evenings and weekends, and at the Round Rock Campus. Listings are divided accordingly on the Schedule of Classes main page.
