The University of Southern California has educated teachers for decades. This Los Angeles-based institutions online masters of arts in teaching is appropriate for teachers in any setting, including those who work at both inner-city and rural schools. Set in the Research Triangle city of Raleigh, North Carolina State University has developed one of the nations busiest and most comprehensive virtual campuses. The states flagship university offers more than 350 online courses and 90 degrees, certificates, and teacher-licensure programs through its web portal, including an online masters in education that focuses on the sciences. The University of South Florida, located in Tampa, has more than 40 years of experience teaching physical education, and its phys-ed curriculum can be delivered online through a combination of reading and practice. The universitys college of education and school of physical education and exercise science created its online masters in education with working teachers in mind. The program functions best when the theories participants learn can be put into practice immediately. Students do much of their studying in virtual classrooms, but USF also expects them to carry out projects in actual schools. The university offers the degree in two tracks: one for individuals with a current teaching certificate and one for those without.

USF structured the 30-credit curriculum of its masters in physical education around a core of eight required classes, including one action-based research project taken as the final class. Students select two electives to round out their program. Most of the required work relates to instructional design and learning assessment, but degree seekers also gain a foundation in research and mentoring. Electives touch on subjects like adaptive phys-ed, sports psychology, sports in society, and grant writing.

Founded in 1785, this Athens, Georgia institution is the oldest chartered state university in the country. CSUFs College of Education is the only university teacher preparation institution in Orange County accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. Founded in 1855 in East Lansing, Michigan State University was originally conceived as an agricultural college. Today, MSU offers more than 200 programs of study, including numerous online and hybrid degree programs designed with busy people and working professionals in mind. Ideal for classroom teachers, school administrators, coaches, and adult educators, MSUs College of Education offers a fully-online masters of education program for those who want to take their career in education to the next level.

This 30 credit hour program offers six concentrations in literacy education, P-16 school leadership, science and mathematics education, special education, technology and learning, and sport leadership. Instead of completing a thesis, students are required to participate in a capstone seminar, in which they develop and exhibit an online portfolio prior to graduation. Courses are taught in an accelerated cohort format, with lectures and coursework delivered through Desire2Learn, MSUs online learning portal. Most students are able to earn their degree in around two and a half years, taking one to two courses per semester.

While residents of Kentucky may not apply to MSUs online masters programs in education, the school offers a flat tuition for distance learners in and out of state. Additionally, students enrolled in at least five credit hours of courses are eligible to apply for financial aid and scholarships. Although the program does not confer graduates with teaching certification, individuals seeking licensure can apply for a recommendation or endorsement through the School of Education. Faculty advisors are available to assist students with the certification application process, as well as with many academic and financial aspects of the online masters program. Students are assigned an academic advisor upon acceptance to the program.

- [Voiceover] In this course we'll be discussing online education. So. let's first take a look at what it is. Online education is a form of education which is delivered and administered using the Internet. Twenty years ago it would have been difficult to imagine high-quality instruction delivered online. But today, in the digital age, it's become a reality. There are over 6 million students enrolled in post-secondary courses online. And that number continues to grow. Now online education or online learning is a broad term. Traditional education is considered to be on the opposite side of the spectrum. But in many cases elements of both can be integrated into a course. Let's take a look at some terms which represent the degree to which online resources are integrated. First, we have traditional face-to-face learning, in which there are no online components. Often, however, instructors in face-to-face courses will utilize the Internet to some degree to share resources and provide learning opportunities outside of the classroom. This is considered web-facilitated learning. Recently, a hybrid model has surfaced, which engage the students in a significant face-to-face component of the course, but also requires online instruction as well. This is known as blended learning. And then there is online learning, in which everything is done online and there's little to no face-to-face instruction. All aspects of the course are done online, including: the sharing of resources, discussions, accessing and submitting assignments, administering assessments and delivering feedback. In this course we'll be focusing on online instruction, although the principles within the course can apply to most of these models. Now, online education can be broken down further, for example, in the synchronous versus asynchronous learning Synchronous refers to the learning in which the instructor and students are interacting in real time. Obviously a face-to-face course is synchronous, but there are synchronous online courses as well, in which classes will meet through live chat or through videoconferencing. And then there is asynchronous learning, which is when the instructor and students do not meet in real time. Resources and activities are accessed and completed online, when is convenient for the individual who's taking the course. There are varying levels of asynchronous learning as well. For instance, this course that you're watching right now is completely asynchronous. We're not meeting face-to-face and there also isn't a time factor or time restriction. In other words, you don't have to complete certain chapters and assignments by certain due dates. Most online courses through a secondary or post-secondary program will not meet face-to-face but there will be set due dates and deadlines. Also there are often times in which a course maybe primarily asynchronous, however once in a while the instructor requires the students to meet together using a video-conference or a live discussion forum, making it slightly synchronous. Most online courses are asynchronous in nature, because this method maximizes the flexibility that online instruction provides. However, these are some of the factors you'll have to determine when creating your online course.

An online degree from Ashford University does not lead to immediate teacher licensure in any state.
