Celcom launches new e-learning portal for students

KUALA LUMPUR: Celcom Axiata Bhd has launched a three-in-one online education service to help students prepare for their UPSR, PMR and SPM examination.

Known as Educube, the e-learning portal incorporates school, tuition and exams and offers over 70,000 questions with six key modules for students, including multimedia lessons, topical exercise, online notes, online report card and e-assessment.

Celcom Axiata Bhd Advanced Data chief operations Afizulazha Abdullah said the Educube would enable students to revise for their exams and enhance their learning experience in a fun and interactive way at any time via their computers, smartphones and tablets.

Education is the key. This is part of our initiative to provide an alternative and fun learning adventure for students in an affordable manner.

Its content is based on the official education curriculum and it's constantly moulded to deliver an innovative educational experience, he said at the launch of Educube here yesterday.

Students, he said, would also be given immediate feedback on their performance to help them identify their weak points and improve accordingly.

Schools and students can also participate in the online exams for UPSR, PMR and SPM where they can gauge their standing compared to others. Those who perform well in their actual tests will be rewarded.

Parents and teachers would also be able to monitor the students' performance via an online report card.

The Educube is available to both Celcom subscribers and non-subscribers at RM4.99 a month via an immediate SMS subscription and Educube cards respectively.

Non-subscribers can get the prepaid cards at Blue Cube outlets from next week, he said.

Discussing education reform at Stanford University last year, the leader of one of the nation's largest teacher unions decided to turn the tables and ask a question of the audience.

"You're all technology people," said Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers. "Could you actually help us?"

Weingarten said she received one call from Louise Rogers, chief executive of TSL Education, a United Kingdom-based company that operates an online network that lets teachers around the globe access, review and discuss lesson plans and other learning materials.

The result of that call, to be unveiled Tuesday, is Share My Lesson, an online portal that teachers will be able to access free of charge. It is expected to contain more than 100,000 user-generated materials.

"We've been trying to find a way to have teachers be able to access information quickly, actively and share with each other," Weingarten said. "It felt to me almost too good to be true, that some private entity had created a platform for teachers to be able to share."

Share My Lesson is expected to be the largest online resource for teachers in the U.S. and comes at a time when cuts to education budgets have led many districts to slash professional development. AFT and TSL have pledged $10 million to develop and maintain the site, which should be ready for teachers by August.

AP

"We must support the incredibly complex work teachers do at every opportunity, including by sharing and promoting best practices through online resources and communities of practice," Education Secretary Arne Duncan said.

He said the program would benefit teachers everywhere.

Teacher preparation and development in the United States vary dramatically. While some schools help beginning and veteran teachers hone and perfect their craft, many others complain of being left to their own devices to learn the best ways to communicate and teach students with different skill levels in one class.

Online driver’s training gets OK

Courtney Hergesheimer | Dispatch

Dana Goodwin, director of Advantage Driver Training in Columbus, teaches a class. He says online drivers education is no substitute for instructor and student interaction.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH Monday June 18, 2012 8:19 AM

Ohio teens soon will be able to opt to learn the rules of the road on the information superhighway.

Ohio will offer online drivers education starting in mid-September; it was one of several provisions of legislation signed by Gov. John Kasich last week.

Ohio teens younger than 18 currently must complete 24 hours of classroom instruction and eight hours behind the wheel with an instructor to obtain a drivers license. Under the new law, online courses can replace the 24 in-class hours, but behind-the-wheel training wont be affected. Online courses need the approval of the Ohio Department of Public Safety.

The change worries owners of Ohio driving schools, who say that jobs and youths will be in jeopardy.

This is a disservice to citizens of Ohio, said Dana Goodwin, director of Advantage Driver Training of Columbus. Theres no substitute for instructor and student interaction. They cant even make certain the student is the person sitting in front of the computer completing the work.

Ohio has 773 driving schools. Critics of the new law say as many as half of those schools could close because of online competition, usually from out-of-state operators.

Backers of the change say online options will offer families cheaper, more-flexible alternatives to traditional drivers education. And because students still need in-car training, the supporters downplay the threat to Ohio driving schools.

Celcom unveils Educube

CELCOM Axiata Bhd yesterday launched Educube, the 3-in-1 online education service where primary and secondary school students can participate in online exams.

Celcom, which has over 12 million subscribers, partnered solutions provider Orenda Sdn Bhd to provide the service.

"We are investing a significant amount of money in this service and for RM4.99 a month, we are confident that most of our customers will find this a value for money proposition," said Celcom advanced data chief operations Afizulazha Abdullah.

The service will also available for non-Celcom customers by early July, he told reporters after the launch here yesterday.

The plan is to increase the questions by 10,000 every year for all school levels while access via smart mobile phones will be available in the third quarter of this year, said Afizulazha.

The service contents are developed by a team of accredited academicians, while all assessment material is reviewed according to the country's national education syllabus.

It has also been endorsed by the National Parent Teacher Association.

Celcom is inviting schools from all around the country to participate in an online national exam and trials for UPSR, PMR and SPM before sitting for the actual national examinations.

"Through the online exams, students will be able to gauge their standing in the academic arena, in comparison with their team mates before the real exams and this increases healthy competition among them," he said.

To subscribe to the service, Celcom customers only need to send a text to Celcom, while subscribers of other telcos can buy subscription cards at selected Blue Cube and authorised dealers starting from next month.

Quick Question: Will online learning revolutionize education?

Posted: June 16, 2012 at 1:15 pm

Here's how five people answered this week's question posed by Capital Times freelancer Kevin Murphy. What do you think? Please join the discussion.

"I've taken online courses through a community college and it may work for some people but for my interests, I could never see doing it online. Being able to talk to people is how I learn best. I'm going to school to be a lawyer and I would never go online to get that degree. I really value the social aspect of what I do whether it's work or education or hanging out with friends so, as much as I like the online community, I just engage more and learn better when I'm with people."

"A year ago I started using the Internet to actually help me get better educated because I can't afford to go to college and I have been consuming as much information as I can. I ask questions and the Internet is an easy, affordable way to get those questions answered and I learn as I go along."
