At annual retreat, University of Kentucky trustees discuss money and online education

Posted: October 14, 2012 at 7:10 am

The University of Kentucky Board of Trustees spent its annual retreat Saturday weighing the numerous pressures it faces in the greater world of higher education, including less state support, higher costs for students, fewer research dollars, and the uncertain but inevitable future of online education.

More particular to UK are issues such as a new way of budgeting, a housing boom, and a large and talented freshman class met with a nervous campus community that's facing another round of budget cuts.

Last year, the retreat helped determine that President Eli Capilouto needed to focus on undergraduate education, more residence halls and new academic facilities. Capilouto said the discussions with the board will be added to conversations with other parts of campus, including faculty, staff and students.

"What we're trying to do is serve as a bridge to our constituents ... the intersection of all these conversations, we think, will be useful in shaping the way we go."

One of the big issues will be online education. Vince Kellen, UK's Chief Information Officer, who was recently promoted to senior provost for academic planning, analytics and technologies, pointed out that many of the nation's elite universities are surging ahead in online education with Massive Open Online Courses, known as MOOCs, although it's not yet clear how or whether they will be profitable.

Capilouto said online education is already happening in pockets all over campus, but there is no centralized program.

"It's the fastest-growing segment in higher education," he said. "Where do we fit in all this?"

It's clear that trustees want Capilouto to figure that out.

"This is technology going on today," trustee Bill Britton said to Capilouto. "Be my leader what's going to be here five years from now? Do we have a plan for the next three years, five years, for what we're going to do for online education? It's here; we can either embrace it or get run over by it."

Continuing Education Provider Professional Development Resources Partners with The National Psychologist on New Online …

Posted: October 12, 2012 at 7:23 am

without comments

Professional Development Resources has announced a new partnership venture with The National Psychologist the Independent Newspaper for Practitioners to publish a series of new online continuing education courses that will offer a variety of brief clinical psychotherapy tips.

Jacksonville, Florida (PRWEB) October 12, 2012

The National Psychologist is an independent newspaper that circulates bimonthly to almost 30,000 practicing psychologists and graduate psychology students.

The first two online courses in the series, which were published this week on the Professional Development Resources website, are titled Psychotherapy Practice Tips, Part 1 and Psychotherapy Practice Tips, Part 2.

These new courses are designed to appeal to busy clinicians across mental health disciplines, who find it convenient to keep up their clinical skills by reading brief articles between sessions or during down time. The time-saving advantage of being able to read a large number of clinical articles in a very short time is important to most psychologists and other mental health professionals, who are required by their licensing laws to complete a designated number of continuing education credits each year.

The courses are very dense, says Leo Christie, PhD, president of Professional Development Resources. They each include 14 or 15 different clinical topics in the form of archived articles from recent issues of The National Psychologist. What is new and different about these courses is that they deliver a great deal of timely information in an easy-to-read format. The topic selection runs the gamut, including tips for treating complex post-traumatic stress disorder, coping with violent patients, the psychological impact of hearing loss, Internet pornography addiction, and more. Busy clinicians should be able to complete these courses online in two hours or less.

The two companies which are coincidentally celebrating their 20th birthdays in 2012 have had a working relationship since 2001, when The National Psychologist (TNP) first contracted with Professional Development Resources to cosponsor the TNP Quiz, which is featured in every issue and awards one hour of CE to those who read the issue and successfully complete the quiz. The relationship has worked and has led from continuing to cosponsor the quiz to the cooperative publication of other CE courses on ethics and risk management in psychotherapy practice.

At the start, all we did was work together on the quiz, says Christie. After a couple of years, Martin Saeman, managing editor of TNP, came up with the idea of creating CE courses based on some of the articles that appeared in the publication. We started out with selected ethics articles, later added risk management topics, and the rest is history. It has been a natural and comfortable alliance.

"The relationship between The National Psychologist and Professional Development Resources has been a good one from the beginning. These latest two new courses simply add a new 'clinical' component to our online CE offerings. Our goal has always been to provide our readers with news and information in an unbiased fashion much of which is not found in similar publications. This alliance is just an extension of this goal," says Saeman.

The two companies plan further cooperative courses including more ethics and risk management courses as well as possibly branching out into other topic groups, including technology and practice building.

EHS associate dean candidate Elizabeth Kirby: Online education, international involvement key in success

Posted: at 7:23 am

College of Education and Human Services associate dean candidate Elizabeth Kirby said Thursday online education and international collaboration are key in strengthening Central Michigan Universitys teacher education program.

Kirby, chairwoman of education leadership,is one of two candidates for the position and spoke to more than 30 people at an open forum in the EHS building. The associate dean will be responsible for supporting the dean with anything regarding the college, including curriculum, budgeting and the development of faculty.

Through my career and my life, my focus has been education, she said. This opportunity to utilize my skills and strengths is extremely appealing.

The future of the programs online classes were quickly addressed.

Weve talked about this, weve looked at this and weve felt a serious intention to creating the biggest capacity we could to deliver education anytime, anywhere and also being able to be portable and flexible, Kirby said.

She said the losses in teachers and students in Michigan would force the department to look at what could be offered online.

Weve lost 1,100 teachers in Michigan the past few years and weve lost 50,000 students. That all plays its way upward in terms of who is going to come to CMU, Kirby said. The competition is immense. In essence, we want to be competitive and we want to attract audiences inside Michigan and outside.

In terms of international involvement, Kirby is working on bringing Chinese teachers to campus in hopes of bringing them back for a summer program.

I think globally that outreach is important and the relationships will only strengthen the college, Kirby said.

Kirby also spoke about her scholarly works and how it is important for leaders to continue to learn.

Online Ed Offers Cost Savings to Adult Students

Posted: at 5:10 pm

without comments

For adults who want to complete a college degree, online education programs offer various cost-saving options, a group of online program leaders said recently.

Through Prior Learning Assessments, or PLAs, students can earn college credits in areas they've already mastered without taking courses, panelists noted during "Debt and Disillusionment: Extending the Economic Advantages of Online Learning," a conference held in early October in Washington, D.C.

"We say come to us and show us what you know ... and we'll give you the credit, regardless of how you achieved it," said Ed Klonoski, president of Charter Oak State College, a virtual institution.

[Find out how to take online courses for free.]

Adult students with extensive professional training can particularly benefit through certain types of PLAs, the panelists said, including examinations, which offer the opportunity to earn credits through tests, and portfolios, which allow students to amass a lump sum of college credits at once.

Any student can attempt to test out of subjects at online schools including Excelsior College, which offers 50 exams that can count toward degrees. The tests cost between $95 and $395, and a passing score can earn between three and eight credits at Excelsior, college Provost and Chief Academic Officer Mary Beth Hanner said after the conference.

Students who fare best with these exams are typically independent learners, Hanner noted, and having discrete knowledge in the area being tested helps. (Examinations range from English Composition to Pathophysiology.) Test preparation is up to students, and, while test scores can be canceled after completion, no refunds are given for failed exams, she said.

"We tend to recommend exams for folks who really are self-starters," Hanner said.

Adults with significant professional training could also consider earning credits in bulk by creating a portfolio that showcases their experiences. LearningCounts.org, a project offered in part by the College Board, helps students create online portfolios for credit, said panelist Chari Leader Kelley, who serves as the vice president of LearningCounts.org at the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL).

Though costs and credits can vary by institution, CAEL's online portfolios are accepted at schools including Excelsior, Walden University, and Bellevue University (as well as at a variety of traditional universities).

Penn Foster College Chooses Vsnap To Integrate Video Messaging For Faculty And Students

Posted: October 10, 2012 at 8:10 pm

without comments

SCRANTON, Pa., Oct. 10, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --Penn Foster, Inc., a global leader in online education, offering programs in high school, career school and college, today announced that after an extensive review it has selected the Vsnap video messaging platform to help faculty and staff better engage and support Penn Foster's more than 150,000 students. With Vsnap, Penn Foster employees can easily record short video messages for students, as a more personal alternative to email or other text communication. This is part of Penn Foster's commitment to creating more personal connections within its community as a path to increasing students' success.

In addition to offering apps that make it easy to record and send short video messages, or "vsnaps," from Apple and Android smartphones and tablets, Vsnap also hosts the videos and provides a simple system for measuring their effectiveness. Each vsnap is 60 seconds or less, and can be shared to a recipient's Twitter handle, LinkedIn account, or email address.

By using Vsnap, Penn Foster has the ability to send and store an unlimited number of video messages, and access rich measurement tools to guide the school's usage. In addition, students will be able to send vsnaps to one another and to faculty, further deepening the cohesion of the Penn Foster community. Close to 90 percent of all college students have a smartphone, and according to eMarketer are seen as a necessity by undergraduates. With the rise of social networks, consumers have become more comfortable with communicating via video, and with Vsnap, students can more easily connect with faculty and school administrators.

"We have been testing the Vsnap software with strong results both internally and in academic learning situations," said Joe Gagnon, president of Penn Foster. "The tool aligns perfectly with our commitment to making sure that students feel supported as they use education to advance their goals. This enterprise agreement will give us access to richer analytics, as well as the opportunity to customize the branding on the video messages."

"At Vsnap, we admire Penn Foster's deep commitment to making their students feel special," said Dave McLaughlin, co-founder and CEO of Vsnap. "We are very pleased to be helping their team create that personal and emotional connection as a way to better serve their students and to drive the growth of the company. It's exciting for us because we share the values of the Penn Foster team, and because their student population of more than 150,000 gives our young company an amazing opportunity to have enormous impact."

"With Vsnap we are adding a layer of collaboration and a personal touch on top of our classes, making it easier for our student body to embrace learning and succeed," continued Gagnon. "That's our mission, and it's our growth strategy. The more successful students are, the more successful we are as a company."

The benefits to online learning are known from scalability, flexibility, and affordability to greater student achievement. However, with a debt-free model like Penn Foster, it is also proving to be a viable, low-cost strategy that could substantially help overcome the huge, recession-driven deficits in education budgets across the country.

About Penn FosterPenn Foster is a global leader in online education, providing high school diplomas, career-focused degree and vocational programs in the fields of allied health, business, technology, education, and select trades. Penn Foster has a rich history in distance learning, tracing back to their roots as the International Correspondence School in 1890. The institution today, comprised of Penn Foster High School, the largest high school in the United States; Penn Foster College and Penn Foster Career School, graduates 25,000 annually, and has always been dedicated to educating and training America's working population.

About VsnapVsnap is a tool that businesses use to make their customers feel valued. It's a simple system that makes it easy to record, share and measure short video messages, not more than 60 seconds, as a more personal alternative to email or other text communications. The benefit is that recipients take action about 40% more than email recipients, and that they tend to be more evangelical on online social networks. Vsnap is a free product with premium features for businesses becoming publicly available in the coming months. Vsnap is privately held. The company is headquartered in Boston, MA, and recently closed a $750,000 investment round.

The Learning Annex Disrupts Adult Education — Again

Posted: at 8:10 pm

without comments

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - Oct 10, 2012) - The Learning Annex today launches its new, celebrity-curated online education marketplace which will connect experts and learners for the exchange of knowledge. The new Learning Annex platform will allow learners and experts to purchase and sell knowledge through a variety of offline and online means, including classes, live tutoring, online, phone calls, micro-consulting and email chat.

Continuing with its long tradition of working with celebrities, the new Learning Annex has enlisted mogul Russell Simmons, dating expert Siggy Flicker and home/design power couple The Novogratz to share their favorite experts or classes with their followers. The new platform will also provide celebrities with the ability to promote their own products, services or charities, teach a class or offer their expertise in various methods to Learning Annex members. New celebrities will be added to the platform every week.

Learning Annex founder and chairman Bill Zanker says, "More than 30 years ago, The Learning Annex changed adult education by offering experts and information in a shorter format, with one-night classes. Since then, the company has successfully provided more than two million people with the tools they need to enhance their lives and careers. I wanted to do something online that would transform and disrupt the way people currently connect with experts."

Zanker continued, "I believe that everyone has expertise to sell and that people want to purchase that knowledge in a convenient way. Just as Airbnb made people realize that an extra room in their home or apartment can be a source of income, the new Learning Annex provides a platform for people to monetize their knowledge. It's an exciting time for online adult education and our new platform is way to unify an otherwise fragmented market."

To support the launch and growth of the platform, The Learning Annex recruited internet industry veteran David Galvan to serve as the company's chief executive officer. Galvan has held leadership roles at technology companies such as Schedulicity, Yahoo!, AOL/Netscape and Motorola, among others, and is responsible for overseeing the company's transition from an offline provider of adult education classes to a robust expert marketplace, curated by celebrities.

"I'm honored to be working with such an extraordinary brand like The Learning Annex during this pivotal time," said Galvan, CEO. "The market for local individual experts in the adult education, life-long learning and self-help market is highly fragmented, inefficient and ripe for disruption. Since The Learning Annex's creation of the market, the industry has shown little innovation or change and represents a $100 billion global opportunity."

About The Learning Annex For more than 30 years, The Learning Annex has been the premier producer of education classes, bringing courses and lectures from high-impact speakers, such as Suze Orman, Deepak Chopra, Donald Trump, Rudy Giuliani, P. Diddy, Richard Branson, Bethenny Frankel, Tony Robbins, Harrison Ford, Bishop Desmond Tutu, Al Gore and many more. The new Learning Annex is the most comprehensive celebrity-curated online marketplace that connects experts and learners for the exchange of knowledge. The Learning Annex platform allows learners and experts to purchase and sell knowledge through a variety of offline and online means, including classes, live tutoring, online, phone calls, micro-consulting and email chat.
