Fueled by changing demographics, online education is quickly becoming what some experts describe as disruptive innovation.

That is, it will change the way we think about higher education, said Dr. Philip DiSalvio, dean of University College at the University of Massachusetts Boston, an expert on online education trends.

DiSalvio described disruptive innovation as something that changes the face of an industry. For example, cellphones replacing land lines and pay phones.

According to DiSalvio, by 2016, 25 million college students will be taking some of their classes online.

If that trend continues, by 2018 there will be more full-time online students that take all their classes (online).

Over 70 percent of students in higher education can be considered nontraditional adult leaners, he said. Thats why online learning is resonating.

DiSalvio said many traditional bricks-and-mortar institutions, even elite ones such as MIT and Harvard, have expanded into the online realm.

It really is a way of adjusting learning opportunities to the current student population, he said.

Larry Ladd, director of accounting firm Grant Thorntons higher education practice, said he believes the future of brick-and-mortar institutions is un-certain, adding that students want courses that fit their needs and schedules.

In online courses, the student is measured more carefully and there is more accountability for the student. People imagine online courses as a passive experience, but its a very active engagement ... engagement is a key factor in learning, he said.

UNC administrators explore online course options

Posted: at 6:43 am

In the Universitys effort to keep education accessible, administrators are focusing their efforts on an up-and-coming forum, online education.

And now, they are exploring a new way to put course content online for free.

Carol Tresolini, vice provost for academic initiatives, said the University is considering a partnership with Coursera, a massive open online course (MOOC) provider.

MOOC providers offer free courses from some of the nations top universities to anyone with access to a computer.

Provost Bruce Carney will present a short summary about the strengths and weaknesses of online education and online course providers such as Coursera to the Board of Trustees on Nov. 14.

Rob Bruce, director of UNCs William and Ida Friday Center for Continuing Education, said the most important element of online education is access.

Im thinking of (former UNC-system President) Bill Friday, and he constantly advocated for access, and access to education distance education really can bring that about, Bruce said.

The Friday Center offers about 138 courses, which reach about 4,000 students worldwide each year.

Leslie Parise, a member of UNCs faculty executive committee, said online education is unique because it reaches students who would not otherwise be able to receive an on-campus education.

I believe evolving technology will drive change whether it is initially embraced or not.

Improving Online Education Technology, One Computer Scientist at a Time

Posted: at 6:43 am

without comments

Online education startups are training a new generation of coders to solve their own problems.

One technological sticking point that faces online education startups like Coursera, which I profile today in MIT Technology Review's November digital education report, is how to grade assignments from tens of thousands of students. This inability for computers to easily grade short answer questions, essays, or even drawings sets a limitation on course offerings, especially for humanities and social science classes. Right now, Coursera is solving this by setting up a peer-grading system for some classes so students can evaluate each other's work.

While artificial intelligence has not advanced to a state that the robo-graders can take over, Coursera might end up solving some of these problems in unexpected ways, including by training a new generation of data scientists.

Consider the case of University of New Orleans mechanical engineering major Luis Tandalla, a native of Quito, Ecuador. Tandalla, who is 22, took Coursera co-founder Andrew Ngs wildly-popular machine learning course online through Stanford University last year, and has since taken several more computer science classes offered through Coursera. He took these classes online, rather than his own university, partly because the teachers were some of the top professors in their fields. "They are the professors that wrote the books," he says.

With his new knowledge, he entered a contest sponsored by the Hewlett Foundation on the crowdsourcing site Kaggle and this October won the $50,000 top prize. His accomplishment? Writing the algorithm that most improved how accurately computers can grade short-answer essays without human help.

When I spoke with Tandalla, he told me he plans to use the prize money to pursue graduate studies in computer science. In the end, Coursera and other online learning platforms could help train a new crop of computer scientists, like Tandalla, who improve the quality of online education across a far wider range of fields.

Is the Government the Solution to the Housing Problem? 10.22.12 (Pt 1) RE 360 w/ Louis Cammarosano – Video

Is the Government the Solution to the Housing Problem? 10.22.12 (Pt 1) RE 360 w/ Louis Cammarosano
Louis and Ryan discuss the direction that the housing market would take if Obama were to be reelected or if Romney becomes President. Louis thinks there will be not much of a difference and notes that real estate has not been a centerpiece of the Presidential campaign. Louis notes that the government is not in the best position to "fix" the housing market or the economy. Louis notes that access to increased credit leads to an ability to spend more which leads to higher prices. Ryan and Louis discuss the impact of student loans on the housing market. Louis notes that young people #39;s inability to purchase homes puts down ward pressure on the housing market. Louis predicts that fewer people will go to physical campuses for their college education in the coming years but will receive their education online for less cost. Louis also predicts that the student loan market will collapse just like the housing market did.From:HomeGainIncViews:0 0ratingsTime:14:35More inNews Politics
