OLATHE, Kan.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Kansas Virtual Academy (KSVA), a full-time, tuition-free public school is ready to start the new school year and give students throughout the state an education option designed to help them reach their full potential. KSVA students and teachers will prepare to start the 2021-2022 school year August 25, 2021.

For most families, the new school year comes with cautious optimism. Many families realized during the pandemic that attending school online is a safe alternative that allows them to focus on their childs future. According to a recent survey by Stride, Inc., 91 percent of parents agree that its important for their children to have multiple school options, including full-time online or a hybrid model that blends online and in-person learning. And almost two-thirds of parents would consider full-time online public school after their 2020 pandemic-driven virtual education experience.

Staffed by state-licensed teachers, KSVA offers students an individualized approach to learning with engaging curriculum designed for students who seek alternative pathways to getting an education. Despite wide-spread evidence of a COVID slide of learning loss for students in the U.S. during the pandemic, Stride K12-powered schools like KSVA reported lower learning loss rates than those reported in national studies. And in some cases, students enrolled in Stride K12-powered schools experienced learning gains.

Students choose online learning for a variety of reasons, including advanced learning, a bullying-free environment, and the flexibility to support extracurricular pursuits or medical needs while maintaining a focus on academics, said KSVA Head of School Cassie Barton. ISKSs online platform gives students the opportunity to pursue their academic goals in a supportive environment.

Visit ksva.k12.com to learn more about KSVA and how to enroll, or download the Stride K12 mobile app for iOS and Android devices - where families can enroll, get ready for the first day of school, and monitor their students academic progress throughout the school year.

AICTE to join hands with ed-tech firms for online education – Mint

Posted: at 2:50 pm

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is looking to set up an e-learning platform with participation from both government institutions and ed-tech startups to offer a wide range of online professional courses to students and mid-career professionals.

AICTE will also streamline e-learning options, delivery and regulations, in sync with the National Education Policy which seeks to adopt technology and offer flexibility in tertiary education. A formal announcement of the plans is expected to be made on Tuesday.

View Full Image

The regulator believes that the move will personalize learning models and prioritize them to meet the needs of every student. AICTE member secretary Rajeev Kumar said the use of technology in education is inevitable, reshaping the way people learn. AICTE members believe the move will be able to provide accurate education technology solutions directly to students and offer a huge choice of courses to suit their requirements, which will improve the overall learning outcome".

A government official, seeking anonymity, said an attempt was made in late 2019, but this time, the plans will be firmed up to provide a contemporary touch. The move follows the covid-led disruptions in education, which in turn made online-blended learning options more acceptable to the masses. The official mentioned above said some 25 ed-tech firms will be on board for the initiative.

The intention of the move is great and it brings private and government players in higher education space together. It also shows that the government is willing to capitalize the momentum gained post-covid outbreak. But we must promote this initiative and ask universities to join in," said Mayank Kumar, co-founder of upGrad, an ed-tech firm that is providing industry-linked and job-oriented courses in collaboration with several leading universities and institutions.

We have to bring students and institutions on board in large numbers and make the new platform more useful for credit transfer and driving flexibility," said Kumar, adding that upGrad is part of the initiative.

Essential E-Learning Ecosystems Move to the Head of the Class – PRNewswire

Posted: at 2:50 pm

without comments

NEW YORK, Feb. 16, 2021 /PRNewswire/ --Long before the COVID-19 pandemic, the trend toward digital online learningin both education and businesswas growing at a steady pace. As the pandemic surged, tens of millions were forced to work from home and college classrooms were shuttered, and the trend turned to a tsunami, leaving many businesses completely unprepared for the new normal. Now both the present and the future of learning and work has moved online, and whole ecosystems must move to e-learning to survive. Demand has surged for customized and scalable online learning products in a single, easy-to-use format. This is the sweet spot for AmesiteInc. (NASDAQ: AMST)(Profile), an award-winning artificial intelligence (AI) software company that delivers online learning ecosystems for business, higher education and K-12. Amesite's product portfolio is complemented by a robust suite of services that help partners implement new programs and improve existing ones. Most recently, Amesite introduced Manage, a creative new functionality that enables schools and businesses to efficiently build and customize new courses, or onboard existing ones, at their own pace. In September, Amesite completed its initial public offering, joining peers such as 2U Inc. (NASDAQ: TWOU), Stride Inc. (NYSE: LRN), Chegg Inc. (NYSE: CHGG) and Pluralsight Inc. (NASDAQ: PS) that strive to improve learning environments with their technology and services.

Recognizing the Need, Providing the Solution

Business and education have historically been conducted in person and offline, in offices and in classrooms. That dynamic has certainly changed. Among other things, 2020 taught the world that many interactions can be efficiently and effectively accomplished in a virtual format. One of the biggest impediments to more rapid uptake is that workforces are unprepared to learn online. Sure, Zoom and other communication platforms serve a purpose, but these aren't the type of comprehensive platforms that will properly shepherd in the next generation of educating people in a process that is easily accessible, affordable and engaging.

To achieve education transformation, technology must be able to easily address both new and legacy programs. Gone are the days of "one size fits all" video cassette sessions or, even worse, wasting money on printed material to provide information. People simply don't learn, retain or have the opportunity to excel under those moribund modalities. Furthermore, there's a necessity today to be able to teach a multiplicity of individual complexities such as safety and compliance Issues or new skills in data management delivered digitally and customizable in a single ecosystem with the ability to track and enhance efficacy.

Easing into the Digital Age

AmesiteInc. (NASDAQ: AMST)was founded for the exact purpose of overcoming these challenges and bring businesses, schools and universities easily into the digital age. Dedicated to improving the way the world learns, passion and technology drive Amesite, with the whole team committed to ensuring that education is accessible to all. Not just accessible, Amesite is intent on making education better, making teacher's jobs easier and encouraging engagement, which is when the best learning transpires. Considering that COVID-19 caused the loss of between 500 million and 1 billionschool years worldwide, the value of Amesite's platform becomes obvious.

Online education will almost certainly co-exist with traditional in-class learning even on the other side of the pandemic. "Online learning has the potential to transform all of education, and online tools are crucial for supporting all kinds of learning," stated Amesite CEO Ann Marie Sastry. "Online offers flexibility, engagement and customization for students. Most importantly it's often the only practical way that professionals can upskill. So it's absolutely essential that the best technology be deployed, to support growth for individuals and for enterprises."

Tech Teaches

Amesite builds and delivers unique artificial-intelligence software products designed to improve learning across any industry or educational discipline. For business, AMST provides a single, easy-to-use platform for compliance and training that increases productivity and up-to-date certifications. Amesite couples this success with best-in-class analytics to analyze trends with 24/7 dashboards and autogenerated daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports. With Amesite, businesses may gain invaluable insights that go beyond teaching and training employees. They can track employee progress and obtain insight on course corrections that work, break down analytics at multiple levels, and make data-based decisions while teaching employees with actionable, real-time analytics.

In K-12 education, Amesite's technology and focus on the user experience help solve the key challenges in K-12 learning. Stale, outdated interface design and complicated multiclick platforms can be boring and confusing for students and teachers. Amesite's social-media-inspired interface attracts and engages students. Updated content keeps education fresh and engaging, allowing instructors and students to interact with each other using upvotes and endorsements. The platform also delivers first-class communication tools with built-in video conferencing and messaging functionality and intuitive interface design.

In addition, AMST offers AI-driven, out-of-the-box scalable solutions for higher education. Universities and other higher education facilities can reduce training times often to zero minutes with intuitive interface design and transition effortlessly with full vendor support from Amesite. Amesite provides custom-branded turnkey programs on a cutting-edge learning platform.

Amesite provides universities, businesses and K-12 schools with essential tools to launch the products they need to upskill students and staff in whatever the core curriculum may be in a key trend, and it does so in a way that learning can go on at anytime, anywhere.

Empowering Learning

Amesite continues to demonstrate product excellence in creating and launching courses and programs tailored to its partners across diverse sectors. The company's new Manage feature now allows organizations to develop, establish and administer as many courses as they wish all in one place and on the same system. Manage is a category maker that empowers learning and development teams to launch with a solution for the whole company rather than a single course covering one topic or an unfamiliar new platform for existing materials. In fact, the ease of use may be unprecedented. Customers can create offerings using a "build-as-you-go, drop-and-drag" format, taking full advantage of the flexibility to customize and build as time allows. Plus, the AMST system's architecture allows for easy management as well as tracking new and existing programs without leaving the program.

Amesite's technology and passion support critical workforce goals such as high engagement, low turnover and high loyalty. It's not a tremendous surprise that AMST products deliver a remarkably high retention rate. The retention rate is an astounding 98% across all its enterprise, higher education and K-12 programs.

Amesite offers the passion, products and service that wins and keeps customers, while making a positive impact on communities worldwide.

The New Age Is Here

There was a growing movement towards digital learning long before anyone had even thought about a COVID-19 pandemic. As it unfolded, a seismic shift occurred for education and businesses to stay operational, a dramatic transition that quite possibly reshaped culture forever and certainly changed the way the world learns. A new sector seems to have developed around the new normal in education.

2U Inc. (NASDAQ: TWOU)operates under a mission to eliminate the back row in higher education, building, delivering and supporting more than 475 digital educational offerings, including undergraduate and graduate degrees, professional certificates, Trilogy-powered boot camps and GetSmarter short courses. This month, the company partneredwith the Institute for Management Development, a Swiss-based academic institution with global reach created by business executives for business executives, to expand online programs.

Stride Inc. (NYSE: LRN)is active in philanthropies with a mission centered on reimagining learning as a lifelong and deeply personal experience. The company provides innovative, high-quality, tech-enabled education solutions, curriculum and programs directly to students, schools, the military, and enterprises in primary, secondary and postsecondary settings. The company has learners in all 50 U.S. states and more than 100 countries. COVID was a boon for business, with revenue during the third quarter surging 46% year over year to reach $376.1 million.

Chegg Inc.(NYSE: CHGG)operates under the mantra of "A Smarter Way to Student(R)," striving to improve educational outcome by putting the student first. The company came into the national spotlight more than a decade ago when it acquired "Shark Tank" participant Notehall, an online marketplace where students can buy and sell class notes, ultimately incorporating it into the Chegg Homework Help site. In general, Chegg's business is all about supporting students through high school to college and into careers by helping them succeed in classes through services available online 24/7/365. Like Stride, Chegg caught investors' attention with a jump in revenue during the coronavirus economy, which resulted in raising 2021 guidance.

Pluralsight Inc.'s (NASDAQ: PS)Skills unithelps enterprises build technology skills at scale with expert-authored courses on today's most important technologies including cloud, artificial intelligence and machine learning, data science, and security among others. The Skills product also include tools to align skill development with business objectives, virtual instructor-led training, hands-on labs, skill assessments and one-of-a-kind analytics. Flow complements Skills by providing engineering teams with actionable data and visibility into workflow patterns to accelerate the delivery of products and services.

Common threads run through what these companies, which are leaders in the new normal education sector, are doing. Technology is imperative to provide individuals, institutions and businesses the tools that they need to teach or learn on demand. As Amesite's Sastry indicated, digital education isn't going anywhere when the pandemic is a thing of the past. In fact, it is probably only going to become even more mainstream.

Iowa City’s education-technology industry accelerates during pandemic thanks to online learning boom – The Gazette

Posted: at 2:49 pm

without comments

IOWA CITY In a matter of weeks last March, Riley Eynon-Lynch saw use of his companys product increase by 1,000 percent.

We have an amazing technical team that could scale our infrastructure really fast, and then amazing sales and marketing teams running 10 trainings a day, said Eynon-Lynch, the CEO and one of the four co-founders of Pear Deck, an education technology company in Iowa City.

One of Pear Decks professional development events had 40,000 teachers watching. Daily training sessions had 1,000 teachers as viewers.

Its part of the Iowa City-based education-technology industrys accelerated growth since the start of coronavirus.

It became a more important part of education for a lot of teachers and schools, Eynon-Lynch said.

A 2019 report commissioned by the Iowa Economic Development Authority estimated the size of the global ed-tech market to be $57 billion. Now, its expected to be $1 trillion in the next eight years.

Its blown up because of the online learning thats occurring, said Kate Moreland, the president of Iowa City Area Development Group.

ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW ADVERTISEMENT

Were going to see a lot of products as a result of this period. ... We think its an ideal time to help get our share of that market and kind of plant our flag in Iowa around it.

The best case scenario in the next five to 10 years, Moreland told The Gazette, would be for the Iowa City area to be recognized nationally and internationally as a place where learning is being advanced.

Adam Keune, co-founder of Coralville-based Higher Learning Technologies, anticipates ed-tech also filling a void for adult education as the Iowa workforces needs change.

Theres going to be a lot of people that are going to need to be retrained in a lot of industries, Keune said.

Its just the reality we live in.

The Iowa City area already has myriad educational-technology companies. Testing giant ACT, which was founded in 1959 in Iowa City, is the longest-tenured company in the area.

Leepfrog Technologies, which provides course catalog services and other software for hundreds of universities, started in 1994.

While Pearson and McGraw-Hill are not headquartered in Iowa City, they also each have a significant footprint in the Iowa City area.

The 2019 IEDA report listed the presence of ACT and other existing ed-tech companies as a benefit as the state builds its own education-technology footprint.

Eynon-Lynch sees having other education technologies in the area as a workforce benefit as well.

There are employees around that already know the space, and even if theyre looking for a switch from their current employment, they can stay in Iowa City, he said.

The University of Iowa has helped the region attract education technology companies. Adam Keune, the co-founder of Higher Learning Technologies, said working with nearby schools both at the university and K-12 levels has given HLT a sandbox for new products.

A great example is when we started with our nursing product, Keune recalled in a virtual panel hosted by ICAD Thursday. All of our products are free to University of Iowa students.

That way, he can hear feedback from both students and faculty.

Debi Durham, the director of IEDA and the Iowa Finance Authority, said she has been talking to the state Department of Education about embracing this opportunity more.

We need more cooperation from our education department, Durham told The Gazette last month.

We need to be able to work with them to solve problems proactively, but more importantly, to test some of these things. ... They need to be a partner on this, and they need to understand that all eyes could be on Iowa for this sector.

Iowa is not alone in trying to become a center for ed-tech.

The IEDA report mentions Chicago, Denver, Pittsburgh and Madison, Wis., as other places eyeing this industry.

Durham said ed-tech first caught her attention in a 2017 conversation with the previous president of ICAD and the previous chief executive officer of ACT.

ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW ADVERTISEMENT

The Iowa EdTech Collaborative, a partnership between ICAD, IEDA, the New Bohemian Collaborative and other organizations, has worked to fund more ed-tech start-ups in Iowa.

Eynon-Lynch credited support from ICAD and other groups for making the Iowa City area a suitable home for Pear Deck when it started 2014.

We didnt move here for those reasons, but those were the things that made us feel like this is a good place to start a company, he recalled.

Pear Deck merged with Los Angeles-based GoGuardian in November, but Eynon-Lynch said the company plans to keep all Pear Deck operations in Iowa City.

While the switch to remote learning forced many schools to more fully embrace education technology, Eynon-Lynch is confident schools will continue using Pear Decks platform even when schools are fully reopened.

Pear Deck really helps teachers make sure theyre reaching every student, every day, Eynon-Lynch said.

We think thats going to be a value that persists, even when COVID is over.

Hes already been seeing it with schools that have resumed in-person instruction.

Their usage of Pear Deck increased at the beginning of the outbreak but didnt decrease when they went back to school, Eynon-Lynch said.

Education majors adjust to online student teaching – The Post

Posted: at 2:49 pm

Students in the Patton College of Education have had to overcome unforeseen challenges in completing their student teaching due to COVID-19.

Education majors are normally placed in a southeastern Ohio school district for a 16-week professional internship. However, schools have been more cautious about letting interns into their facilities in order to keep students and staff safe.

Kathleen Haskell, coordinator of professional internships in teaching, said she has experienced adjustments in placing students in student teaching positions. Haskell said she places around 200 candidates a year.

Haskell said that local districts that have taken multiple Ohio University student teachers in the past have chosen to not take any this year. Students living out of state due to COVID-19 had to complete an out-of-area petition to be able to do their student teaching elsewhere, Haskell said.

Since the pandemic, we have approved probably 10 out-of-area internships that, prior to the pandemic, we would not have because we just literally could not find them a place, Haskell said.

Haskell said some school districts that have enough vaccinations for staff will offer them to prospective student teachers, a hopeful sign for the gradual return of in-person internships.

The setbacks from the pandemic, though, have not stopped student teachers from making the best of their virtual internships.

Allie Davis, a junior studying early childhood education, is currently completing a virtual internship at The Plains Elementary School.

Despite teaching virtually, Davis is able to build relationships with her third grade students through activities like morning meetings, or through math and reading lessons in smaller breakout rooms. Davis said that while she wishes these relationships could be deeper, she still enjoys bonding with the students.

They still tell me about their lives everyday and theyre very open, even on the computer, Davis said.

In this virtual classroom, Davis faced obstacles such as getting students to pay attention when they are distracted and showing them how to use reaction commands on their computers. She said she hopes to return to a traditional classroom setting for better interaction, but mostly for the students sake.

I think that the students are going to be getting a better education in person than they would if they were sitting at home on a computer, Davis said. Thats why I really want them to go back. Its for them, not for me, because Ill get over it, but they really need to go to school.

Mya Contillo, a teacher who graduated from OU in December 2020 with a major in integrated language arts, completed a virtual internship before landing her current job teaching virtually at Belpre Elementary School.

Contillo started her professional internship teaching in person in spring 2020, but after the pandemic hit, she continued teaching online.

Learning how to teach online was a learning curve for Contillo, who said she had difficulties in creating online curriculums, teaching at a slower pace and forming relationships with students.

And I was also just disappointed that I didnt get to go into the classroom, of course she said. You learn so much just being in the field.

Ultimately, Contillo said she finds gratification in what she is able to do for her students during the pandemic.

You know, as crazy and difficult as its been for not only teachers, you have to realize, like, its 10 times harder for the students to just adapt to this learning environment, she said. I think that, as a teacher, its just made me really grateful that I do what I do, because I feel like Im bringing a sense of normalcy to the students everyday lives.

Some schools could reopen this week with L.A. County set to meet threshold Tuesday; parents rally to demand on-campus learning – KTLA Los Angeles

Posted: at 2:49 pm

Some schools is Los Angeles County could resume on-campus learning as early as this week with the county poised to meet a state threshold for reopening, officials said Monday evening.

On Tuesday, public health officials expect the county to reach the state threshold for reopening schools, an adjusted case rate of 25 per 100,000.

This encouraging news means that dozens of elementary schools will be permitted to reopen for in-class instruction for students grades TK-6 as early as this week, the health department wrote in a statement.

Schools will still have to submit plans outlining their safety protocols to county and state health officials to get permission to reopen.

Further information is expected to be released by public health director Barbara Ferrer in a Tuesday news briefing that will be livestreamed on KTLA.com.

Earlier Monday morning, a caravan of parents and their children descended on downtown L.A. for a demonstration demanding the immediate reopening of schools.

I want my kid to get an education, parent Susanne Jacobson told KTLA. Hes in eighth grade. Hes not ready for high school next year. He hasnt had an education in a year. Distance learning is not working.

A group called Students First Coalition of Los Angeles organized the car rally outside the Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration building, where the L.A. County Board of Supervisors has its office. Participants honked and held posters with messages including, Our kids deserve better. Another poster read, Let me go back to school!

Some protesters emphasized the prolonged closures toll on childrens mental health.

Its actually not OK, kids could get mental breakdowns, I hear some kids get depression from it, said Brody Moos, a fourth-grader.

Remy Moos, whos in third-grade, complained of the discomfort of online school.

My eyes are on the screen too much, and it kind of hurts my brain, the student said.

Coalition leaders spoke to reporters during the rally outside the building.

We represent hundreds, if not thousands of schools here in Los Angeles County who have prepared to reopen our schools safely. And we want the opportunity to open our schools now, said Tom Konjoyan, whos head of the Village Christian School in Sun Valley and founded the coalition.

Earlier this month, the group penned an open letter to Gov. Gavin Newsom saying the states phased reopening framework cannot stand, and that all schools should with proper and appropriate mitigation strategies in place be permitted to open immediately.

According to the group, the missive as of Monday afternoon has been signed by more than 1,600 parents, 82 medical practitioners, 145 private school staffers, 42 private school administrators, 28 public school staffers and one public school administrator.

Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Austin Beutner has also pushed for the state to make reopening schools a priority. On Monday morning, he announced the districts first COVID-19 vaccine site for eligible employees. Beutner again asserted that vaccinating all school workers is key.

A clearly articulated plan to provide vaccinations to school staff in the nations second largest school district, combined with the leadership Los Angeles Unified has already shown in preparing its campuses, can be a model for other school districts across the country, Beutner said.

A Calimesa man has been arrested in connection with a brush fire in Riverside County that killed two people and destroyed dozens of homes in 2019, authorities said.

Antonio Ornelas-Velazquez, 38, was arrested Saturday and charged with involuntary manslaughter and unlawfully causing a fire resulting in great bodily injury, according to a spokesperson with the Riverside County district attorneys office. After posting $75,000 bond, Ornelas-Velazquez was released Sunday, according to jail records.
