3 Strategies to Better Motivate Your Team

Regardless of your industry or team size, being a leader is no easy task. You have to be a counselor, a disciplinarian and a source of encouragement all at once. Finding a balance between those roles some of which at first seem to conflict requires a crystal-clear strategic vision, passion for your people and a commitment to developing your own emotional intelligence.

Its possible to replace employees, but you can never precisely replicate an individuals specific skill set. In todays knowledge economy, the old adage that employees are your biggest asset rings true. One of the most important things you can do as a leader is show your employees you understand this, as well as thevalue they bring to the table that you have confidence in their skill sets and expect great things.

Setting high expectations not only inspires employees, but it also helps you get the best work from them. At the end of the day, your teams success equals your success. Below are a few key ways to keep your team motivated and, ultimately, help your entire organization succeed.

Rarely are employees satisfied with clocking in, clocking out and collecting a paycheck. They want to know that theyre learning and growing on the job,that theyre actually working toward something. In fact, according to Work Institute research, career development (or, rather, the lack thereof) is the leading cause of employee turnover in the U.S.

Show employees you care about their development by having conversations about their career objectives,and not just during your annual reviews. AQuantum Workplace study has found that when employees have these types of discussions more than once a year, there's a marked increase in levels of engagement. Be intentional about this process to ensure you regularly discuss professional goals with each of your direct reports,whether that be via an official quarterly meeting, a casual lunch conversation or something in between.

What should happen during these discussions? First, dial up your emotional intelligence and pay attention to how employees are feeling and responding to you. Make sure your employees know that their career success matters. Share your goals with them, and ask about their own. By discussing your own goals with your employees, youll show that you trust them and help them feel more comfortable opening up. Secondly, offer ways that you or the company at large can help them work toward their objectives. Dont leave the meeting until you both have some concrete action steps.

Encourage your employees to learn from work experiences both the good and the bad. This may require helping those you coach to recognize the learning opportunities in their workday. Employees are often pushed for time and dont prioritize their own learning,notes Michael Butler, principal at Pariveda Solutions, in a company blog post.As a leader, you can start by helping your team glean key lessons from their work experiences.

Butler recommends reminding your employees to reflect on what went well, what didnt go so well and how they can improve in the future. You can call out these daily learning opportunities in the moment or ask your direct reports to think through what could have gone better on a weekly 15Five or quarterly survey.

Identifying and responding to these learning experiences is incredibly powerful; ithelps create aculture of learning within your team. In addition, provide resources for continued learning throughout the year. These could take the form of an in-house training platform or financial support for an off-site workshop, among other options. Reward those who make an effort to improve and grow, whether thats with a gift card, a one-time bonus, access to further educational opportunities or even just bragging rights, such as Learner of the Month.

Employees want to have personal relationships with their colleagues, and Gallup research shows that work friendships lead to better performance. When employees truly feel a sense of camaraderie with their colleagues, they feel more compelled to take positive actions to benefit the business.

To help cultivate relationships, allow time and space for your team to interact while they accomplish tasks. That could mean adding 15 minutes of social time with snacks and drinks before an all-hands meeting or setting up huddle rooms as more casual conference rooms when teams just need an informal setting to collaborate. Support these tactics by encouraging teams to work cross-functionally. This breaks down silos, contributes to productivity and leads to more opportunities for personal connection.

Luckily, the possibilities for social engagement are virtually endless. You could organize a formal team-building event, a family picnic, an employee heritage celebration or a post-work happy hour. Keep your company culture in mind, and promote the types of activities you think would appeal most to those on your team.

Being a successful leader requires a delicate mix of attributes. You have to be able to set high expectations, motivate employees, provide support and also course-correct when needed. By focusing on employeess goals, development and relationships, youll set up your team and company for success.

After Blue Monday a couple of weeks ago, the first Monday in February continues the theme of dreariness and depression of post-Christmas winter. With freezing temperatures, the days shrouded in darkness, andspring still seeming a long way off,it is hardly surprising that a lot of people are feeling under the weather.

With sick days and reduced productivity because of illness costing UK firms more than 77 billion, there is a clear incentive for employers to put measures in place to ensure a healthy and happy workforce.

The number of days employees take off sick has actually been reducing over recent years, with the ONS reporting that, while staff were absent for an average of 7.2 days per year in 1993, by 2017 this had fallen to just 4.1 days.

Emma Long, Commercial Director, BizSpace explains that there could be a number of factors might be behind this, including improved general health amongst the UK population, but also a growing trend of presenteeism (a feeling of job insecurity amongst staff that leads to a fear of being away from the office or leaving on time) and improved technology, meaning that people are more likely to work from home if they feel unwell than take a day off sick.

Yet, while the statistics appear to be moving in the right direction, they could actually be masking a more serious problem. Our always-on culture means that switching off has become a sign of weakness. Whereas previously people could use the excuse of not wanting to infect others to take the day off and forget about work for 24 hours, the ability to work remotely has led to people staying away from the office but still doing a full days work.

On the surface, this looks like a win for employers, but it could actually be having a negative impact on long-term health. Sick days serve a useful function of giving people a break when they need it most. With no excuse to stop work when dealing with minor illnesses, people might not take the time they need to recover from illnesses, leading to further complications and a negative impact on mental health over the long term.

By focusing on reducing the number of sick days their employees take, companies are failing to take into account the issues of reduced staff productivity and longer term health problems, including mental health issues. In short, to try and reduce sick days is to focus on the wrong thing; employers should instead be aiming to improve the long-term health of their employees.

This could be done in a number of ways.

After beating Southampton 4-0 at Anfield on Saturday, Liverpool drew level with the Nottingham Forest side of 1977/78 on 42 top flight matches unbeaten, with only Arsenal's 'Invincibles' of 2003/04 now ahead of them with the longest ever unbeaten streak, standing at 49 games.

It's worth noting, though, that within Forest's 42-game unbeaten streak, they drew 21 games, while Arsenal won 36 and drew 13 within their 49-game run, whereas Liverpool have posted 37 wins and five draws, stretching all the way back to the 1-0 away win against Brighton & Hove Albion on 12 January 2019.

Throughout much of the season, there has been a conscious effort among Liverpool fans not to tempt fate regarding the league title, which is entirely understandable given the scars of all those false dawns from years gone by. But over the past couple of months, as Liverpool have pulled far into the distance and left Manchester City reeling in their wake, the conversation has shifted to where and when, rather than if, the title will be confirmed. To still deny it at this point starts to look ridiculous, to the extent that it would suggest an unreasonable lack of faith in this remarkable team and manager.

Whereas last season, Liverpool and City drove each other to keep on winning week after week, Liverpool have obliterated their competition this time round to the extent that they simply don't have any challengers left to fend off. Whenever questioned on the topic of winning the league, Jrgen Klopp and his players have been steadfast in their refusal to look beyond the next game, maintaining a steely focus which has guarded against any form of complacency.

Although wrapping up the title as soon as possible is clearly the primary objective, Liverpool will know full well that they have given themselves a genuine chance to write their name in the history books as the best side the Premier League has ever seen. Only 13 more games lie between them and an unprecedented unbeaten 'Centurions' season, and at this stage it's not remotely unreasonable to start thinking about this as a distinct possibility. The players won't say it publicly, but they'll know it's within their sights.

Liverpool can match Arsenal's 49 game unbeaten run against Manchester City at the Etihad in early April, which, on paper at least, looks to be by far the toughest remaining obstacle in their path. Should they emerge the other side of that with the unbeaten record still intact, though, it becomes increasingly difficult to see who can possibly stop them.

Of course, unexpected things can happen in football matches, and it's by no means a foregone conclusion that Liverpool won't hit a surprise bump in the road between now and then, while they still have to face Arsenal and Chelsea afterwards. That said, given this side's collective capacity to find solutions to virtually every scenario it's confronted with and with such a vast array of options within the squad for Klopp to choose from you'd back them to continue coming up with the answers to every question thrown their way in the weeks to come.

While some might suggest the 'Invincibles' talk is merely an unnecessary distraction to the main task at hand, it can arguably work the opposite way, as a powerful source of motivation for Liverpool to aspire towards, a tangible target to keep their motivation right until the very end, even once the title is mathematically beyond doubt.

Regardless of whether they do or don't manage to achieve such an incredible feat, they'll still have written one of the most memorable chapters in the club's history and go down as legends who'll be spoken about for generations to come (which they arguably are already).

But if they can go all the way and lift that shiny gold trophy along with the big silver one, it would end the 30 year wait in a manner so spectacular that not even the most optimistic of supporters could possibly have dreamt of.

Chin Up: A little motivation for the Fight for Air Climb, and some advice if you want to try it – Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

As a firefighter, Elijah Krajewski knows theres no worse feeling thannot being able to breathe.

Thats one of the reasons that hes participated in theFight for Air Climbs at the U.S. Bank Centereach spring for six years. The event is a major fundraiser for the American Lung Association.

But thats just one of the reasons.

Krajewski, 35, lost more than 50 pounds after doctors told him a few years ago, when he was in his late 20s, that he had very high cholesterol. It was bad enough that he needed to go on medication, but Krajewski has a difficult time remembering to take meds.

Honestly, it was easier for the assistant chief of the Wind Lake fire department to move the scale 235 pounds down to 180.

He thinks about that sometimeswhen hes training with a 70-pound weight vest. Its such a relief to drop itwhen hes done.

And he thinks about all the weight hes lost, too, when hes in the stairwells of the U.S.

Bank Center. Because its the equivalent of the 50 to 60 pounds of firefighter gear hes wearing.

Thats right.

As if the 47-floors 1,034 stairs werent challenging enough, Krajewski and other firefighters like him make the climb with an air tank, helmet, protective clothing, boots and more.

And as if thatweren't enough, after doing that for five years, Krajewski decided to do the ultimate climb a challenge of climbing up as many flights as possible within one hour.

Krajewski has gotten stronger and faster and leaner every year.

At first it took him about 18 to 20 minutes to get to the top one trip only, with all the 50-60 pound gear. It was brutal. After sprinting to the 20th floor, his body was not ready to push that fast any more.

I hit a wall, said Krajewski. I was just completely exhausted. But nothing really prepares you right? Stairmaster at the gym is great. Running stair wells is good, its not the same.

He kept training and whittled that time down to 10 minutes. That was almost too easy (for him).

I was looking for a challenge. One time wasnt enough for me, said Krajewski.

So in 2019, he completed three climbs in under an hour as his first ultimate attempt. Hes been training ever since he has other competitions on his to-do list like the Firefighter Combat Challenge and a half Ironman and will go for four for the March 7 climb.

Its a different experience, he said. Ill never be the best at it but I just enjoy doing it and trying new things.

Hes so fit now he plans to skip stairs up to the 25th floor for the sake of speed, and then take single steps the rest of the way, without stopping. He maintains this pace by running with a metronome in his headphones.

There is time for you to train for the climb if youd like to try it.

Most climbers arent this fast.The men's Fight For Air Climb record is 5:02, set in 2017 by Sal Impellitteri of Oak Creek; the women's record is 6:21, set in 2015 by Liz Ruvalcaba of Saint Charles, Illinois, and tied in 2019 by Danielle Anton of Milwaukee.

The key is to walk stairs as much as possible for the next month.

Krajewski will climb for anhour on a stairmaster at 90 steps a minute or do repeatedsprints up stairwells. He also runs at his gym, the Princeton Club in New Berlin, wearing a simulator mask.

Just get out there. Right? said Krajewski. Dont be afraid to be looked at and to be weird because everybody has a starting point. And if you get frustrated, mix it up.

Josh Jackett is a veteran climber who was willing to share some great advice for those looking to try and some data.

He is a Milwaukeean who runs Stair Life, an online social media outlet intended to provide news and information on stair climbing around the country, mainly for competitive and hobbyist climbers. Jackett said the Facebook page maintains a calendar of climbs around the country and publicizes stair climb results locally and nationally.

Stair Life is an information resource, and not a group.

Jackett also is the captain of Stair Club Milwaukee, a loosely associated club of competitive and hobbyist stair climbers in the Milwaukee area who participate in climbs locally and nationally. Stair Club Milwaukee has fielded a Fight For Air Climb every year since 2015 and will be there again in March.

Honestly, anyone can do it, said Jackett. You don't have to go fast or push yourself to your limits. It's a really unique experience whatever your reason is for doing it, whatever your fitness level is, or whatever effort you want to give it.

Jackett said if you have access to a stairwelltake advantage of it, especially a long one.

Things like running, cycling and spinning, rowing, the elliptical, or swimming will help increase your cardiovascular fitness. A machinesuch as a StairMaster is a good option.

Stair climbing is a cardio activity, but it also taxes your legs pretty significantly," Jackett said. "The more time in advance you start preparing, the better, but even a month out, you should focus on increasing your cardio base leading up to the climb and preparing for an intense effort.

Also, depending on your fitness level, maybe consider taking a day or two or three of recovery or taper immediately before the climb.

The 2020 Fight For Air will be his eighth straight Milwaukee Fight For Air Climb, and his 15th stair climb at the U.S. Bank Center.

Jacketts personal best at the US Bank Center is 6 minutes 36 seconds, set at the 2018 CF Climb.

Stair Club Milwaukee has fielded a team at both the Milwaukee Fight For Air Climb and CF Climb Milwaukee every year since 2015. We've finished with the fastest overall time among all teams at all of those climbs.

The 2018 Stair Club Milwaukee team holds the Fight For Air Climb team record of 30:31 (6:07per person average across top five team finishers).

Stair Club Milwaukee has fielded three teams at two different Chicago area climbs, finishing first at the 2018 Oakbrook Terrace Fight For Air Climb, second there in 2019, and third at the 2020 Aon Step Up For Kids last month.

- The men's U.S. Bank Center record is 4:50, set by Justin Stewart of Springfield,Illinois, inthe 2011 CF Climb.

The women's US Bank Center record is 5:55, also set at the 2011 CF Climb by Cindy Harris of Indianapolis.

- The men's Fight For Air event record is 5:02, set in 2017 by Sal Impellitteri of Oak Creek.

China Coronavirus: Logistics and Supply Issues and China Staff Motivation – China Briefing

A consecutive jump of 29 percent and 25 percent more confirmed cases, respectively, of the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) over the last two days show how the non-symptomatic incubation period is beginning to manifest itself. People are feeling well but are actually infectious during this period, which can apparently last from between 7-14 days.This is why quarantine periods are being introduced worldwide.

Basic mathematical modelling indicates that the infection rate will almost certainly increase, with a 29 percent increase in cases to reach 7,711 yesterday, and a further 25 percent increase overnight to reach 9,096 cases today. This, when carried forward, shows an initial increase into the tens of thousands in China during February. With an estimated mortality rate of 2 percent, the numbers will be a shock, but appear at present to be affecting the elderly and sick. Healthy patients appear to be recovering, which is good news.

This means that most Chinese emphasis will currently be on prevention, helping patients recover, and aftercare. It remains odd that thus far, international governments have not appeared to be offering any assistance to China in terms of medical supplies, other than shipments organized by the UN.

The decline in infection rate may not occur until mid-February, meaning businesses operating in China need to react fast and ensure staff work from home with immediate effect. There are implications to this type of arrangement. We discussed the technical aspect of putting in place a work-sharing platform into your business in the article How to Operate Your Business in China Remotely.

There may also be additional financial considerations as concerns staff HR. We discussed the treatment of staff operating remotely, and/or unable to return to work, in the article Managing Your China HR during the Coronavirus Outbreak.Note it may be necessary to pay staff additional leave and entitlements, including overtime, if they are to work from home.

Meanwhile, ongoing updates as concerns the situation in China are being monitored in the article Managing Your China Business during the Coronavirus Outbreak: Ongoing Updates and Advisory,which covers all relevant ongoing news and regulatory updates as concerns the situation.We will continue to update this and provide advice.

Elsewhere in China, the situation, at least at present, appears to be causing stresses to the internal China supply chain. We hear reports from across the country of price hikes (which are illegal) and shortages of some items. Hong Kong residents have complained about a shortage of face masks, while towns throughout China appear to be finding other essential supplies difficult to obtain. Stocks are running low. This suggests that the government will soon start to release stockpiles, probably with assistance from the Chinese military as providers of distribution assistance. It is entirely possible thePeoples Liberation Army (PLA) will be utilized to get supplies into cities, towns, and villages across China. Typically such maneuvers happen overnight. This should be no cause for alarm.

International governments should be offering assistance to China with supplies of food and other basics,and given yesterdays WHO announcement of a global emergency, this can be expected.

For foreign investors, Q1 2020 requires an understanding of the basic reorganizing of your business practices in China, which are mainly related to working from home, minimizing travel, and for those in China, economizing on supplies. Business plans need to be adjusted downwards, as sales decrease and costs increase, at least for the next three months and very probably into Q2 as well. Our own firm is looking at re-modelling our business plans to discount any new client investments in China for the next 6 months. Other areas of Asia, and we have concerns about the situation in Thailand and Vietnam, may also find themselves confronting similar decisions. It is important your business prepares for a cash flow hit in the dip of new business income in the first quarter of 2020.

Foreign investors in China also need to work hard to motivate and ensure their Chinese staff feel part of the family and protected. Personnel need be be occupied as much as possible during this time to keep them motivated and their minds off the problems.

Our business and staff operated during the SARS epidemic, and as a firm, it made us much more aware of the corporate measures needed to give our business infrastructure as much support as possible. That extends to ensuring your Chinese staff are cared for, and made to feel useful, wanted, and needed. It is not a time to abandon them.

It is easy to make money and run a business in China when the times are easy. Difficult times in China require a determination, concentration, and managerial skills to be at the fore in order to overcome problems as they run their course. This situation is no exception and we encourage foreign managers involved in and with China to be especially diligent and be seen to be providing support to their colleagues and employees as much as possible. That means motivation and emotional support, and not overplaying the negativity aspect. Chinese staff are under a lot of stress at this time, and this will continue for several weeks.

The human resources aspect of business in China needs the accent on being human towards staff in China now, more than ever at this time. Please reach out to your China staff and help keep them feel wanted, onside with your business, safe, motivated, and protected. The best way to do this is to speak regularly with them, hold Skype and other calls, be prompt with salaries, and keep them busy with work to do. Above all, be positive. There will be difficult days ahead; however, China has acted promptly to contain the spread of the virus, and the situation will pass in late spring. In the meantime, foreign businesses in China face a battle now is the time for foreign investors and managers to step up to the plate, and support your business and your Chinese staff.

You never know how many chances youll get at eternal NFL glory; this may be your one and only shot to earn a championship ring during your career. While every Kansas City Chiefs player knows that reality first hand, theyll all have a little extra motivation on Sunday evening: their head coach, Andy Reid.

While Reid has done just about everything possible during his NFL career, hes never won the Super Bowl. His Kansas City Chiefs players want to change that.

The Kansas City Chiefs are a historic NFL franchise; Andy Reid is one of the leagues winningest coaches. Both of them, however, desperately need to win the big game.

While the Kansas City Chiefs dominated the early days of the American Football League, success has been harder to come by in recent years. The club appeared in Super Bowl I and Super Bowl IV, winning the latter game; after that title, though, fortunes turned. The Chiefs have had plenty of talented players, ranging from Christian Okoye and Priest Holmes to Jamaal Charles and Eric Berry, but never could get over the hump. When the playoffs rolled around, Kansas City always found a way to choke.

Andy Reid also finds himself in a similar position. While Big Red has spent more than two decades in the NFL and has established himself as a premier offensive coach, he cant shake an unfortunate reputation. When the Big Game comes around, Reid is written off as a choker whos bound to mismanage the clock. Although thats not exactly faira head coach only has so much influence on a single-elimination gamehell still want to lift the Lombardi Trophy to complete his CV.

While every Kansas City Chiefs player should be ready to take care of business on Sunday, theyll have a little extra motivation when they take the field. The team wants to help Andy Reid win his first Super Bowl as a head coach.

One of the best coaches to ever coach football and to never have a Super Bowl as a head coach, thats one of the biggest things I feel like is on my list as far as things Id love to happen this Sunday, defensive end Frank Clark told reporters. I know the joy hes going to get. Ive got more years to play, to give myself a shot doing this. Coach aint old, but hes getting old. Just keeping it real its the nature of the game. You never know when someones time is going to end, so you want a guy like him to be able to enjoy the benefits of winning that championship and be able to see that.

Hes a Hall of Fame coach, fullback Anthony Sherman added, summing up the teams sentiments. For him to be able to go down with a ring and a championship, itd be a great feeling for a lot of these guys on this team. I know a lot of us want to win this for him.

Winning a championship game is never easy. Two things, however, will be on Andy Reids side come Super Bowl Sunday.

First, the head coach has an impeccable record coming off of bye weeks. While the pre-Super Bowl festivities may have changed the teams schedule a bit, Reid has had two weeks to gameplan for the 49ers. Given Big Reds experience and track record, theres no doubt hes cooked up something special on the offensive side of the ball.

Beyond that, Reid has the most talented player in the Super Bowl, if not the entire NFL, on his roster in the form of Patrick Mahomes. While the 49ers are an incredibly complete team, sometimes you just need a superstar to go out there and win the game. If you were creating a list of players who youd entrust with that responsibility, Mahomes would be near the top.

What does motivation mean to you?

Motivation to me means not letting anything from your past stop you from succeeding, taking all the negative things people say and turning them into positives, seeing so many successful people around you and know that we are all human and anyone can achieve what they want.

How do you manage stress at work and in life?

The biggest stress reliever for me in work and life, in general, is music. I listen to all types of music and there is a different genre for every mood I am in. Its very easy to get stressed in life and its important to find a way to cope that works. It may be different for everyone.

Which books do you read and recommend to get inspiration and motivation?

I believe books can inspire and motivate us which is why we should adopt the habit of reading. Some of my favorites are: Think and Grow Rich, the Rich Dad Poor Dad series, and The Law of Attraction.

Jrgen Klopp has revealed Danny Ings form for Southampton has been a source of joy to his many friends at Liverpool, but outlined why his side are determined to maintain their outstanding Anfield record by making sure he has a quiet afternoon.

The forward left the Reds for Saints in the summer of 2018, initially on loan before the deal was made permanent last July.

So far this term, Ings has struck 16 goals in all competitions for Ralph Hasenhuttls side and Klopp is, of course, well aware of the threat he will pose to his teams ambitions today.

However, the manager believes the motivation levels that have enabled his side to go 19 points clear will once again be in evidence when Liverpool take to the field.

He wrote in his column in the official matchday programme: Today at Anfield we must be ready for a team that doesnt care about what position in the table either of us currently has.

They have international quality throughout and they play to their maximum. This makes them a dangerous opponent. And of course there is one player in their ranks we know better than most: Mr Danny Ings.

For 90-plus minutes today he is our opponent, but other than that he is always our friend at Liverpool. I am not even half-a-per-cent surprised to see what he does this season. Richly deserved, also.

I would never dream of telling Gareth Southgate what he should be considering, but given he is a top operator and clever coach, Im sure hes aware thatDanny is someone who could help his country again in the near future.

Today I hope he has an off day, but other than that his story this season really brings joy to those of us lucky enough to know him.

Moving back to us, we have a very quick turnaround since our game on Wednesday in London. We knew this and we planned for it, but still we must now manage it.

The win against West Ham was very pleasing in how the boys managed the game. They will need to show the same qualities and then some more this afternoon, I think.

Anfield has been an outstanding home for us so far this season, but its been this way because we have all worked to make it so, players and supporters always together. For this to have a chance of continuing, so must the approach and that means working harder and harder each time.

What defines us in this moment is the desire to always be better in the next game than we were in the last. I think after Wednesday we can do this.

The last fixture here on home soil was Manchester United and without question the energy from the crowd was decisive. It was as if the Kop willed Alis ball and Mos sprint and finish. I hope that is fresh in the mind of the Liverpool fans today. I hope they know that their contribution is what makes those moments possible.

After Wednesday I was asked whether I needed to find different ways to keep the players motivated. It was the easiest question I have been asked all season. An empathic NO.

The motivation for these players is simply winning the next battle, be that a header or tackle, or a sprint, or a save or finish. They are motivated to win in each and every second of the game. And if you keep this mindset win the moment that you are in the rest takes care of itself.

Knowing how strong Southampton are in all departments is motivation today. Knowing we face an opponent who believes they can and wants desperately to beat us is motivation.

Knowing that in our dressing room we have a group of people who want to share amazing common experiences each time they present themselves is motivation.

My players have been asked a lot of questions so far this campaign but they dont tire of giving the right answer.

I love how they are their harshest critic and their own inspiration. Whatever the outcome today I am certain we give all we have and do it for each other. This is all I can ever ask. For the supporters and players, its 3pm on a Saturday and Anfield is ready for us. Knowing that is all the motivation we need.

MILWAUKEE Twenty-four hours after Kobe Bryant was killed in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California that took the lives of his daughter, Gianna, and eight others, a Milwaukee man spoke out about the cherished memories made with the NBA legend. Jordan Patterson met Bryant when he was 13 years old, through Make-A-Wish Wisconsin.

Patterson, battling kidney dysfunction, got to travel to Los Angeles with his family to sit down with Bryant.

Meeting Kobe was probably the highlight of my life, said Patterson.

During some of Pattersons darkest days, No. 24 was a light.

It boosted my spirits so high, said Patterson, who called his Make-A-Wish trip life-changing.

Im really grateful for that, said Patterson.

Before spending time with Bryant one-on-one, Patterson watched his hero make the game-winning shot against the New Jersey Nets during the trip back in 2012.

This is the picture when I met Kobe, said Patterson. This is after I met him.

During their conversation, he got to know the basketball superstar as more than a great athlete but a great person, as well.

Signed all my pictures, took any pictures I wanted, answered all my questions, said Patterson. It was just an unreal experience.

It added to his personal healing, and also his wherewithal, said Giles Patterson, Jordans father.

Eight years later, Jordan Patterson and his family called those memories even more special as they worked to make sense of the tragic death of a man who granted a simple wish passing on lifelong lessons.

His legacy will always live with us, said Giles Patterson.

If you just work at your craft, anything is possible, said Jordan Patterson. Anyone can be great, and that just sticks with me every day.

Bryant helped grant more than 200 wishes through Make-A-Wish two on Wisconsin.
