HAWTHORNE: Motivation through the BRAVO formula – Keremeos Review

Personal trainer Sean Hawthorne asks, if we know what to do, then why dont we do it?

Out of control. Ive owned and operated OneLife Health + Wellness Ltd. for over 17 years and for over 17 years Ive been one of the lucky few whove made a career out of a personal passion. I do what I love, with people that I really care about, all day long. Its the best job in the world and in what seemed like a blink of an eye it changed and theres nothing I can do about that. Is it changed forever? I dont know, none of us know, but lets look at we can do what I do to help with that sensation of skidding off the edge.

Before we take a look at some strategies to help in these strange times, Im giving my online course, The BRAVO Formula, away for free. By donation really, but there are no strings attached, if youve chosen now to change, excellent! Achieving goals, no matter how big or small, is part of todays tip on how to survive uncertainty and understanding and appreciating the skills of behaviour change is a big part of achieving any goal.

It doesnt matter what those goals are, rehabilitation, improved sports performance or weight loss, without learning how to change old negative habits, or how to develop new positive ones, the odds of success are exceedingly low. Losing weight and keeping it off has a success rate of between 5 and 10 percent 90 to 95 % of us determined to change our bodies fail and thats why I developed the Behavioural Reboot and Vitality Overhaul, the BRAVO Formula.

Throughout the course (and throughout my career) I use terms like influence, and Ive resisted using the word control, because as our current situation clearly illustrates none of us are in control of very much. A wrench was tossed in the works and the machine isnt working so smoothly anymore. The BRAVO Formula starts with change management, includes a great exercise routine thats not dependent on having a gym and shows you what you need to do to incorporate health and fitness into your world.

One of the pillars of the BRAVO formula is the concept of small victories, acknowledging that each win throughout the day, no matter how big or how small is crucial to our mental health and our continued success. In the course I talk about the findings of Theresa Amabile and Steven Kramer, industrial and organizational psychologists who present the results of a massive corporate study on high level job performance in their book The Progress Principle, but the idea of small steps to success is famously illustrated in the commencement speech given by US Navy Admiral William H. McRaven.

Changing the world starts with making your bed, its the small steps, those daily actions, and the acknowledgement of a win, that lead to real success and in this time of incredible uncertainty its crucial to not only maintain habits and routines, but to take the smallest actions that can lead to a feeling of empowerment and hope.

When Im feeling overwhelmed and out of control as a I do right now, its time to clean the junk drawer. Over the years of helping people with their health and fitness, this is advice that Ive shared hundreds of times. Clean that drawer, throw the garbage out, organize the pens and give yourself a sense of not necessarily control, but the ability to influence your surroundings. We will get through this, it wont be easy, its certainly not fun, but we will get through it. So, if your angst and anxiety levels are as high as mine, organize that drawer, gets some exercise, and appreciate the victory. Im off to defrost the deep freeze.

Feel free to e-mail me at sean@1-life.ca if you have any questions regarding the BRAVO Formula, or if you are looking for help setting up an in home exercise routine. Stay safe.

McTominay motivated to keep improving at Man Utd following injury frustration – Goal.com

The Scotland international midfielder suffered knee ligament damage during the festive period but is eager to take his game to even greater heights

Scott McTominay is determined to keep improving and do more at Manchester United, with the Scotland international hoping to have put injury struggles behind him.

The 23-year-old had to be patient when stepping out of a famed academy system at Old Trafford, but his persistence was rewarded when he broke through under Jose Mourinho.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has also found a regular role for the hard-working midfielder within his plans.

Article continues below

McTominay was, however, restricted to spectator role for two months earlier in the 2019-20 campaign after suffering knee ligament damage in a Boxing Day clash with Newcastle.

He worked his way back to fitness in time to score a memorable late effort in a derby win over Manchester City, but is taking in another enforced break during the coronavirus pandemic.

McTominay feels better prepared for a spell without football after spending time on the treatment table and is eager to take his game to even greater heights when cleared to return to the field.

He told Uniteds official app of his past experience and future ambition: I had a couple of injuries which were difficult to deal with mentally.

For me that is one of the main priorities, keeping your head screwed on mentally.

Physically I've always had that attitude to keep improving and wanting to do more and more to sustain yourself in the team, and keep yourself in the best shape as possible.

For me that has just been normal for me.

McTominay added on being in lockdown: I've had a training partner, Callum, who's asking me the questions, and we've had a really good week or two of training and eating all right foods, and staying on top of it.

So I feel like that motivation comes from him as well and everyone around me who are good people. So for me that is important.

United had worked their way back into contention for a top-four finish prior to football shutting down, while also reaching the quarter-finals of the FA Cup and Europa League, with Solskjaers side hoping that a green light will be given to complete their fixture list at some stage.

Molly-Mae Hague binge eats crisps and can’t find motivation to exercise in isolation – Mirror Online

Posted: at 8:43 pm

Molly-Mae Hague is struggling to feel motivated during the lockdown and has ended up binge-eating crisps.

Taking to social media, the former Love Island star shared her frustrations with her 3.9 million Instagram followers.

In her latest post, the 20-year-old social media influencer praised followers who have been keeping active and making the most of self-isolation.

She said: "Work outs and exercising and everything else... I literally cannot find it in me to do it. I hate home workouts.

"I need to find a way of work out at home that's fun and enjoyable because we don't know how long it's going to go on for.

"So I definitely need to stop eating crisps and do something more productive."

The former Love Island star has been holed up with her boyfriend Tommy Fury and documenting their time together all over social media.

As they near the one-year anniversary mark, the couple appear to have gone from strength to strength even with the added pressures of living together through the pandemic.

The only remaining Love Island couple of the season were adjusting to staying indoors just like the rest of us.

"The last couple of days have been a bit hard on me and Tommy - especially now that all the gyms are shut, all the restaurants are shut... It's crazy," she said on social media recently.

"But yeah, I'm thinking of you all."

Despite her recent fitness worries, Tommy later baked some yummy homemade chocolate brownies that Molly-Mae appeared pretty pleased with.

Although Molly-Mae is following government guidelines and staying in doors, it hasn't stopped the influencer plugging her PrettyLittleThing collaboration in a number of her recent posts.

"outfit @prettylittlething Haul just gone live on my YT channel," she captioned another sultry Instagram pose a few days ago.

Dublin star James McCarthy has lost none of his motivation after seven All-Ireland medals – Irish Mirror

Posted: at 8:43 pm

without comments

Until last September, only three players had started each of Dublins All-Ireland finals in the 2010s - Stephen Cluxton, James McCarthy and Cian OSullivan.

Unfortunately for OSullivan, he didnt line out in the 2019 drawn final against Kerry or the replay, leaving

Cluxton and McCarthy to continue on together. Nine finals each, nine starts each.

Dublin used 36 players in total in those nine All-Ireland finals, winning seven and drawing with Mayo in 2016 and Kerry in 2019. Just three of the 36 featured in all nine finals Cluxton, McCarthy and, perhaps surprisingly, not Michael Darragh Macauley or OSullivan but super sub Kevin McManamon.

All of which leads us to consider exactly who was the player of the decade?

Unfortunately, Cluxtons self imposed media ban and McCarthys modesty means that neither is ever going to lay claim to that title, not publicly at least.

Asked about his incredible All-Ireland record, McCarthy told Irish Sunday MirrorSport: Youre always trying to be fit and ready for the business end of the season, every year.

"Ive been really fortunate over the years that while I have picked up injuries, theyve always been at times that have given me a chance to recover and to get back in time.

Starting each final, thats a nice statistic to have when you finish up, to look back on.

McCarthy, who recently turned 30, has time on his side to eventually eclipse Cluxton who turns 39 later this year.

The powerful wing-back admitted his motivation to keep going is strong, despite having won virtually every honour in the game.

He said: Its simple enough, I still get a huge kick out of just playing football. Unfortunately right now the circumstances arent great but hopefully well be back at it at some stage, whether its mid-summer or late-summer.

Hot on McCarthys heels with eight All-Ireland finals is a group of eight Dubliners including Diarmuid Connolly and Dean Rock. Ciaran Kilkenny and Jonny Cooper are the only two of that group who have started all eight, just missing out on the 2011 success.

Doege motivated by QB competition at home in Lubbock – WDTV

Posted: at 8:43 pm

without comments

West Virginia football has maintained high expectations for its players when they return to the team, whenever that may be.

WVU junior quarterback Jarret Doege is doing his part. The Lubbock, Texas native is consuming his days by running, lifting and practicing his throws with a friend at an open field. Fellow Gray station, KCBD, in Lubbock caught up with the Copper High School product in his hometown.

"Just trying to stay sharp," Doege said. "I want to be at my best when I get back so I could show them that I have been working."

Doege knows he has to be in tip-top shape when he returns to Morgantown. The Bowling Green transfer is vying for the starting quarterback spot with senior incumbent Austin Kendall.

"I'm just going to focus on little details in my throwing and staying in shape and just be prepared for when I get back," he said. "We have a little competition going and I think that just makes everybody better. At the end of the day whoever Coach Brown picks is best for the team."

Jarret was granted immediate eligibility last year after his transfer from the Falcons but WVU elected to redshirt him. Doege played in the Mountaineers final four games with three starts. He went 79-for-120 for 818 yards and 7 touchdowns with 3 interceptions.

JJ maintains his motivation in testing times – Chronicle

BASKETBALL: The cancellation of the NBL1 North season has been a tough one to stomach for the Toowoomba Mountaineers.

Joe Johnson was one of a number of players primed for a breakout season at the top level.

A strong season in the Toowoomba Basketball League saw him average 29.5 points per game, including 48 in the opening round.

There was a chance that this could be the (breakout) season, Johnson said.

Its disappointing but understandable why they made the decision. Its tough when you put in all that preparation and work to find out its not going to happen.

With that being said its not going to stop me from being ready and working hard for next season.

I was feeling pretty good about myself, and I still do. As for my form, I just tried to stay aggressive and have confidence in my abilities to do what I do best and what Im good at.

I struggled a bit last year with my brother passing away.

It really motivated me to work my butt off everyday in the gym.

It started to show in the TBL season, and hopefully coming to the end of lockdown that can motivate me even more.

It was this family tragedy that hurt Johnson, who looks to his brother as an inspiration in more ways than just on the court.

He really believed in me. He was one of the few people that really did, he said.

I had a lot of people that shrugged me off growing up and said that I wasnt going to amount to much as a player.

I didnt start out the greatest and wasnt one of those kids that you looked and thought would be talented.

He pushed me every day and is looking over my shoulder.

I still look after his kids and they also motivate me. I learn from them and they learn from me, and I just want to be a role model for them.

While the training regimes of all athletes have been severely hampered with government restrictions in place, Johnson said he is making the most of the situation to try and stay in game shape.

Ive been doing lots of body weight work, he said.

People forget that push-ups and sit-ups are some of the best things they can do.

I got myself a weighted vest and have been doing plenty of things around the house that Ive been able to use for altering exercises.

Ive used a chair for dips and box jumps, just standard exercises that anyone can do.

Ive had to get a bit creative with a couple of things, but Ive also brought a boxing bag which is always great for fitness.

It was a bit hard to get a hold off, I had to wait until it appeared at Kmart and took the opportunity when it came up.

Im lucky enough to live near a hoop which Ive recently discovered.

Its outdoors so Ive been able to social distance, and get in as much work as possible.

Its been a godsend.

Johnson said that Mountaineers players would share their home workouts to get them into the community.

Weve all been doing our home workouts, he said.

It can show the community what were working on and can help kids learn that are inside.

A trauma psychologist weighs in on the risks of ‘motivational’ pressure during quarantine – Upworthy

Posted: April 11, 2020 at 6:44 pm

without comments

A "motivational" message has been circulating during the coronavirus lockdown, which is allegedly supposed to kick our butts into gear since most of us now have more time on our hands.

Here's one version:

On its face, it may sound logical. We often don't do things because we lack timeor think we doso now that we supposedly have more time, we should be doing those things now, right?

Just one thing thoughthere's a deadly global pandemic and massive economic crisis happening, which might be just the tiniest bit distracting right now, Jeremy.

A trauma psychologist from Beirut weighed in on this idea that we should be extra productive right now, and she didn't mince words. Alaa Hijazi's Facebook post has been shared 19,000 times, so people are clearly appreciating her wisdom. She wrote:

I thought I was spared the horrid 'motivational' phrase going around now'If you don't come out of this with a new skill, you never lacked time, you lacked discipline'until I saw it on my local yoga studio page.

As a trauma psychologist, I am utterly utterly horrified, enraged, and bewildered about how people can believe and spread this phrase in good conscience.

We are going through a collective trauma, that is bringing up profound grief, loss, panic over livelihoods, panic over loss of lives of loved ones. People's nervous systems are barely coping with the sense of threat and vigilance for safety, or alternating with feeling numb and frozen and shutting down in response to it all.

People are trying to survive poverty, fear, retriggering of trauma, retriggering of other mental health difficulties. Yet, someone has the nerve to accuse someone of lack of discipline for not learning a new skill, and by a yoga teacher!

This cultural obsession with [capitalistic] 'productivity' and always spending time in a 'productive,' 'fruitful' way is absolutely maddening.

What we need is more self-compassion, more gentle acceptance of all the difficult emotions coming up for us now, more focus on gentle ways to soothe ourselves and our pain and the pain of loved ones around us, not a whipping by some random fucker making us feel worse about ourselves in the name of 'motivation.'"

Indeed. Even those of us who are still employed full-time are finding it difficult to focus some days like we used to. The enormity of this pandemic and the global shutdown over it weighs heavy on all of us. Our sense of normality has been turned upside down and the uncertainty over what even the near future holds makes sustained attention a challenge.

Add in the fact that many people now have children at home who used to be at school or childcare, many are struggling to figure out how they're going to pay rent or buy groceries, many are watching businesses or careers they've spent years building crumble before their eyes, many have health conditions that make them anxious about catching the virus, and it's not hard to see how neither "time" nor "discipline" are our big problems right now.

If you want to go read books on hustling and build up some skill set, Jeremy, go for it. But let's not lay a guilt trip on people who are going through a traumatic experience that none of us have experienced before and none of us were prepared for.

Recovering Woods finds motivation in postponed Tokyo Olympics – Cyclingnews.com

Posted: at 6:44 pm

without comments

Michael Woods (EF Pro Cycling) is back on his turbo trainer as he begins his recovery from the broken femur he sustained in a crash at Paris-Nice last month. The Canadian is aiming to be competitive in time for the World Championships road race in Switzerland in September and he also has an eye on the Tokyo Olympics, which have been postponed to 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"At the moment Im finding motivation in the fact that the Olympics have been postponed to 2021," Woods told his team website.

"The World Championships also look like theyre going to happen in September, and those were the two biggest goals for me this season, and now I think I can certainly be back 100 percent for both of them."

Paris-Nice was the last WorldTour event to take place before all racing was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The calendar is currently clear until at least June 1, but the Tour de Suisse (June 6-14) has already been cancelled, while it remains unclear as to whether the Tour de France, scheduled to start on June 27, will take place as planned.

On Thursday, the UCI reiterated its desire for the 2020 World Championships to go ahead in Aigle and Martigny from September 20-27.

Although Woods intends to be back in action by September assuming the cycling season has resumed by then he stressed that he had no intention of rushing his recovery, pointing out that his athletics career had ended prematurely due to a stress fracture.

"Im lucky in a way by having the experience of ruining one athletic career by not doing it right in the recovery process, and its taught me some valuable lessons," Woods said. "Ive set a date for when I want to be back by but its not set in stone, so if anything pops up Im not going to rush it, Im just going to take it as it comes."

For the time being, Woods is in the early phase of his rehabilitation, and his work on the bike is limited to some low intensity outings on his home trainer.

"When I was able to get on the bike it was just so nice, I was buzzing afterwards, even though it was just 15 minutes at a 50 watt average, it was just lovely to move the leg and be a bit more active," he said. "Now theres an opportunity for people to drop me for a change. Im getting passed by everyone on Zwift right now."

Cam Heywards snub of the All-Decade team leads to motivation for 2020 – Behind the Steel Curtain

Posted: at 6:44 pm

without comments

People love lists. This has been proven time and time again. Whether it is the NFL Networks Top 100 list, or weekly Power Rankings, fans love to debate where their favorite team/players rank among their peers.

Recently, the Pro Football Hall of Fame released their All-Decade teams from 2010-2020, and while the Pittsburgh Steelers were represented with Antonio Brown and Maurkice Pouncey, there were no defenders who made the list.

And there is one current member of the black-and-gold who took offense to being snubbed.

Mr. Cameron Heyward.

Heyward took to his verified Twitter account to talk about not being on the list, and how it is going to motivate him for the upcoming 2020 season.

It seems as if Heyward isnt just thinking of being a snub, but he is angry about being left off the list. When you think about it, when it comes to All-Pro and Pro Bowl voting, the fact Heyward is labeled as a defensive end in the Steelers 3-4 base defensive package has always hurt him and put him against pure pass rushers. This has since changed, but it doesnt help his case when those who dont take the time to look at Heywards complete body of work, and overall success, when it comes to these accolades.

For Steelers fans, they feel for Heyward, but they should find solace in the fact Heyward is going to come into the 2020 season with a fire in his belly to prove those voters wrong, and this could equate to success for the black-and-gold.

A fired up Heyward could turn an already legitimate defense into a force to be reckoned with not just in the AFC North, but in the NFL.

Get your popcorn ready...

Be sure to stay tuned to BTSC for the latest news and notes for the black-and-gold as they prepare for the 2020 NFL Draft, and the upcoming regular season.
