Bergen teen creates meditation garden for the stressed-out – NorthJersey.com

BERGENFIELD Irthu Pillai sawsomething in her life that she wantedto remedy.
"I saw everyone going to school and going to work facing stress every day," with no readily available solution, Pillai said.
So the Bergenfield High School freshman decided to create a meditation garden at Cooper's Pond.
"I thought if there was a meditation garden there would be someplace public where people could be in peace and at one with nature," she said.
The garden is in a section of the park overlooking a flowing stream where people come to fish. It was unveiled last month during a small ceremony.
There are severalrocks, a pebble surface, flowering plantsanda seedling that will grow into a shade tree.

Pillai, a Girl Scout in Bergenfield, started working on the garden in late June as part of a required project to earn a Girl Scout Silver Award.
She said that early on, she went to the mayor and council to seek approval of her project. Then she met with Phil Neville, who heads the Department of Public Works, who advised her on how to design and create the garden.

While Pillai did a good deal of work on the garden, she credits the assistance of everyone who helped get this project done, including her parents supporting her idea, local businesses that donated items for the garden, and DPW workers and others who helped her put it together.
"The fact that people would take time out of their day, without having anything to gain, to help me out, someone they don't know personally, was amazing," Pillai observed.
Since it opened, she has seen some people use the garden, and she hopes whenever it is warm, they will find it to be a useful resource in their lives.
One person who has checked out the garden is Mayor Norman Schmelz.
"I thought it was a beautiful idea. It's actually very relaxing. If you just sit there and close your eyes, you can lose yourself," Schmelz said.

Crystals and meditation: The hottest holistic trends for 2020 – Metro.co.uk
Posted: at 11:50 am
Working with crystals is meant to intensify your intentions (Picture: Getty Images/iStockphoto)
2019 has been the year of wellness. We now realise that health is so much more than simply going to the gym a few times every week we take a much more holistic approach.
That means looking at our health in terms of the whole package; from our physical fitness, to our diet, stress levels and state of mind.
So what are going to be the big holistic trends next year? Will we still be obsessed with all things mindfulness? What about our love-affair with meditation?
We asked the specialist Claire Taylor from at health advisory brand Civilized Health to reveal what the popular wellness activities are likely to be in 2020.
Celebrities such as Adele, Katy Perry, Victoria Beckham and Miranda Kerr have all spoken of their love of crystal healing.
Their rise in popularity is confirmed as the term crystal healing has seen a 263 per cent uplift in worldwide Google searches within the last year.
The popularity of crystals is soaring. People who work with crystals believe that the stones hold a line of frequency that emit vibrations. Working with specific crystals will see that your body realigns in order to match the vibrations of the crystal.
Working with crystals that match your personal goals (for instance career, love or wealth) will intensify your intention and ensure that your intention evolves into a reality.
If crystal healing is something that you would like to adopt into your everyday routine, I recommend carving out some time in order to establish what your goals are in each area of your life.
Then, commit to researching which crystals align with your intentions for instance, Rose Quartz can encourage peace and healing whereas Citrine emits wealth and prosperity.
Carry the crystal along with your intention and use it as a tool to focus and realign your energy.
I predict that 2020 will also see a rise in people working with the earths moon cycles and aligning their crystal work with these phases.
I am, personally, a huge advocate for acupressure mats and general interest in the product is growing.
Acupressure mat UK has received a 294 per cent rise in Google searches in the last year alone.
The acupressure mat is essentially a sheet that holds tiny plastic spikes that replicate the needles used within the practice of acupuncture.
The mats can erase tension and ignite a deep sense of relaxation. They are especially popular with those who experience aches and pains in their back and the ever-growing situation of tech neck.
Laying on the mat for a short time can provide the same remedies as acupuncture, without the use of needles. I strongly recommend wearing clothing when using the mat for the first few times as it can be painful.
Initially, lay on the mat for a total of five minutes at a time. Once this becomes less painful, increase the time spent on the mat until you reach a maximum of 30 minutes.
Do not be afraid to use the mat multiple times throughout the day instead of in one block.
The past year has seen an undeniable rise in mindfulness and breathing apps alike.
Many of us live in a fast-paced environment where we are striving for success in our perspective fields whist attempting to achieve the somewhat allusive work life balance. It is therefore no surprise that meditation has seen a 136 per cent rise in Google searches.
Many believe that practicing meditation means that you have to dedicate endless hours to sitting in a room in silence. This couldnt be further from the truth. The beauty of meditation is that it can be practiced anytime, anywhere.
Meditation reduces cortisol levels in the brain, which lowers stress levels and anxiety. Migraine sufferers also report that meditation eases and, in some instances, prevents symptoms.
Meditation requires participants to focus on breathing and focus. The mind is likely to wander. Instead of aiming to prevent this, notice where your thoughts go and retrieve focus back to your centre.
With practice, your mind will wander less and less.
We are often so focused on getting through the day that we rarely stop in order to reflect on how we feel. Practicing meditation in short spurts throughout the day presents the opportunity to asses how you feel and disperse of negative energy and improve concentration.

SurveyMonkey productivity survey and the racial sleep gap – Fast Company
Posted: at 11:50 am
If someone asks you the image of the characteristics of a productive person, what comes to mind? Assuming youve read at least a few articles about time management, youll probably picture an individual who wakes up early, sleeps seven to nine hours a night, and incorporates meditation and exercise in their morning routine.
Fast Company recently commissioned SurveyMonkey to conduct a study of how people view their own productivity and corresponding habits. The survey polled 3,522 respondents of differing races, genders, age groups, and income levels, about what time of day they feel most productive, how many hours of sleep they typically get, and how often they meditate and exercise.
Its important to note that the data for this survey was self-reported. No one tracked the number of hours participants slept, and they werent given a clear definition of what it means to be productive. Its also worth noting that people tend to overestimate the number of hours they work, as Laura Vanderkam previously reported forFast Company.Regardless, the research provides some interesting insights into how participants perceive their own productivity and how they structure their lives.
Sixty-one percent of the survey participants reported that they felt the most productive in the mornings, while 22% reported feeling most productive in the afternoon. Just 17% felt most productive in the evening or late at night.Research on chronotypesshows that people are genetically wired to sleep and wake up at different times, which means that your peak productivity time will differ depending on when you typically sleep and wake up, and how many hours you need.
But the corporate world tends to reward early risers, meaning that things might be tougher for that 17% of respondents. A 2014 study published inthe Journal of Applied Psychology, for example, shows that many supervisors exhibit a morning bias. The authors wrote, Even when accounting for total work hours, objective job performance, and employees self-ratings of conscientiousness, we find that a later start time leads supervisors to perceive employees as less conscientious.
Most tips for a productive morning tend to include some form of exercise or meditation to get your day off to a strong start. The survey findings indicate that for most survey participants, exercise is a crucial part of their routine. Forty-three percent of respondents reported that they exercise a few times a week, while 22% exercised every day. Seventeen percent said that they exercise a few times a month, while 18% reported that they exercise less often than a few times a month.
When it comes to meditation, however, the survey presents a different picture. More than half of respondents said that they meditated less often than a few times a month. Eighteen percent reported meditating every day, and 16% said that they meditated a few times a week. Just 12% of respondents reported meditating a few times a month. Although these numbers seem low, its important to underscore meditations growing popularity. A 2018 study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed that 14.2% of adults have a meditation practice, a significant increase from 4.1% percent in 2012.
Stacey Gordon, CEO and founder of diversity, inclusion, and career strategy firm Rework Work, has some thoughts on why people have been slow to adopt meditation as a practice. Most people dont know what it is, Gordon says, but they dont want to admit that, or they dont know where to look for (accurate) information. John Chisenhall, director and owner of performance training firmDeRose Method Greenwich Village, previously told Fast Companys Stephanie Vozzathat people dont start meditation, because they think its boring and demands patience.
When it comes to sleep and productivity, the research is clear. Sleep deprivationeven a littleruins your productivity. According to an article in the Conversation, sleeping a mere 16 minutes fewer than usual can reduce cognitive performanceand cause workers to be more distracted.
Nearly half of the survey participants reported getting seven to nine hours of sleep in a 24-hour period, while 44% percent reported sleeping, on average, five to six hours. Breaking down the data by race, however, point to stark differences. Just over half of white respondents reported getting between seven to nine hours of sleep, which is the amount recommended by the National Sleep Foundation. Only 36% of black respondents reported getting this amount, compared to 44% of Hispanic respondents and 46% of respondents from other races. Fifty-two percent of black respondents reported getting by on five to six hours of sleep, compared to 42% of white respondents, 45% of Hispanic respondents, and 47% of respondents from other races.
Gordon says that this figure doesnt surprise her. Sleep studies show that African Americans are more sleep-deprived, she says. She points to a 2015 study published in the journal Sleep(and cited by an article in theAtlantic), which tracked the sleep quality of white, black, Hispanic, and Chinese adults in six U.S. cities. Six thousand individuals participated in the study, and the results showed that black participants were five times more likely to experience fewer than six hours of sleep on an average night, compared to white respondents. Chinese respondents were 2.3 times more likely than white respondents to sleep for fewer than six hours a night, while Hispanic respondents were 1.8 times more likely than white respondents to get this amount of sleep.
Gordon says that there are a lot of factors at play. Socioeconomic status, the safety of your surroundings, and the level of day-to-day trauma you experience can all play a big part in how much sleep you get. She also points to a growing body of research that suggests trauma may be inherited, which may shed light on the racial sleep gapparticularly between black and white respondents.
Gordon also says that ones background and culture have a major influence on the way you perceive rest and sleep. As a black woman, she says she was taught the idea that If youre sitting around, then youre lazy. Marginalized communities are often taught to be twice as good, she says. That kind of pressure may cut into your sleep time or prevent you from getting the rest you need to recharge physically and mentally.
Janice Gassam, the founder of consultancy firm BWG Business Solutions, echoes that sentiment. She wonders whetherblack people and underrepresented communities are working more and thereforegetting less sleep. Its possible that people who feel more productive at work also believe that they cannot or should not be sleeping as much. Maybe the grind mentality is more prevalent with underrepresented communities, because more is expected of them.

Bayside Park in Normandy Beach to be Rebuilt With Fishing Amenities, Meditation Garden and Playground – Shorebeat

Bricks Bayside Park, devastated during Superstorm Sandy and in relatively poor condition ever since, will undergo a major turnaround over the winter and retake its spot as one of Bricks most beautiful public properties come spring.
The park, in the Normandy Beach section across Route 35 from Brick Beach III, is a major hot spot for crabbers and anglers during the summer. The park is also a place of respite for residents and visitors alike, who have enjoyed its gazebo surrounded by small intimate paths through the dune grass and native plants. The newly-rebuilt park will maintain all of these aspects and build on them, Mayor John Ducey said.
The township council on Monday night awarded a $722,022 contract to Price Construction, of Freehold, to undertake the rebuild. In a separate measure, the governing body awarded an $84,690 contract to Albert Marine, of Waretown, to rebuild the bulkhead and boardwalk that runs along the perimeter of the waterfront park.
Were going to construct it over the winter so it can be opened in time for Memorial Day weekend, said Ducey. Thats the goal we want it to be enjoyed by everybody once the beaches are open.
The park will feature extensive amenities, including fish cleaning and bait stations, a meditation zen garden (which may be used for waterside yoga practice) plus brand new playground equipment for children. Additionally, a cornhole game will be located at the park.
The signature gazebo will also be rebuilt and placed at the center of the park.

Energize your chakras with magical healing power of reiki meditation – Times of India
Posted: at 11:50 am
Do you have any idea that you can meditate upon your chakras with Reiki meditation? Have you ever experienced the healing power of Reiki meditation? The universal life forces of Reiki transfers tranquillity within us, which is extremely beneficial for our mind and body. Chakras are the spinning wheels of energy centres, which carries a magnificent responsibility to emanate energy to keep our mind and organs functioning at an optimal level. So, meditating upon these energy centres and energizing them with Reiki, will not only heal but also will open your doorways to peace, serenity and mindfulness. So what is Reiki? An ancient Japanese healing technique, which promotes spiritual healing and self-improvement. It is a one of kind therapy which provides a treatment which feels like a wondrous glowing radiance i.e. life force energy that flows through and around the body. It is administered by laying on hands and completely based on the idea of invisible life force energy.
Word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - The Rei was thought to signify universal, transcendental spirit or boundless essence. The Ki represents life force energy, and is equivalent to Chi or Prana in its quality. So, essentially, Reiki is a universal energy and it is said to be transmitted by a Reiki practitioner through his or her hands in order to heal self or other people holistically.
In a world full of stress and negativity, our chakras get blocked when they come in contact with negative influences. A block is a place where your energies are confined or forbidden to flow freely. If the energy cannot flow freely, that is a major source for any type of illness and mental diseases. Reiki meditation helps you to declutter those blocks and get the energy flowing. When the energies flow freely, it helps your body to create harmony within and it releases imbalances created by negative influences. No Chakra works efficiently irrespective of the others, they are all part of the whole. Each Chakra works efficiently only when other Chakras are fully aligned and engaged with the energy system.
To energize and heal your chakras with Reiki meditation, sit comfortably positioning your spine upright. Invoke the Reiki energy to channel through your body. If you are a beginner and not attuned with the healing process, you can always take the help of a Reiki practitioner and receive healing. Reiki will not channel through your body until and unless a Reiki Grand Master has given you the attunement for a certain level of Reiki.
Take 5-10 deep breaths and allow your mind and body to relax. Chant the word OM couple of times to enhance relaxation. Once you reach the meditative peaceful state, start meditating from the root chakra going eventually up straight to the crown chakra. It helps to place your hand on the respective chakra points to enhance the healing. Whatever Reiki level you are attuned to, just visualize the Reiki universal life force energy is being received by your root chakra through your hands. For level 2 or above practitioners, visualize sending the respective Reiki symbols inside your chakra. Beej mantras related to respective chakras can also be chanted with the process to enhance the meditative experience.
It is also helpful to visualize the respective colours at the Chakra points. E.g. visualize the colour of the Root Chakra that is red. Like this, keep channelizing Reiki energy into your root chakra for at least 3 to 5 minutes as per your healing preference. Visualize your root chakra is now strong and healthy. All the blocks from the root chakra are removed. Now eventually do the same with all the 7 chakras in your body. Starting from the - root, sacral, manipura, heart, throat, third eye and crown chakras. After imbibing the Reiki energy in all 7 chakras, you can do the same manifestation to cleanse your aura as well.
You can even practice write a wish or a goal and request for clarity and manifestation to come to you through Reiki meditation. This helps us more on focusing on our goals. It helps to think in a certain away. Write down your goals on a piece of paper and put it in a box and channel Reiki to that box. It helps in sending out positive energy out into the universe and helps in manifestation purposes. It is also called a Reiki wish box.

True Meditation is letting go of the meditator – IndiaPost.com

Adyashanti
True meditation has no direction or goal. It is pure wordless surrender, pure silent prayer. All methods aiming at achieving a certain state of mind are limited, impermanent, and conditioned. Fascination with states leads only to bondage and dependency. True meditation is abidance as primordial awareness.
True meditation appears in consciousness spontaneously when awareness is not being manipulated or controlled. When you first start to meditate, you notice that attention is often being held captive by focus on some object: on thoughts, bodily sensations, emotions, memories, sounds, etc. This is because the mind is conditioned to focus and contract upon objects.
Then the mind compulsively interprets and tries to control what it is aware of (the object) in a mechanical and distorted way. It begins to draw conclusions and make assumptions according to past conditioning.
In true meditation all objects (thoughts, feelings, emotions, memories, etc.) are left to their natural functioning. This means that no effort should be made to focus on, manipulate, control, or suppress any object of awareness. In true meditation the emphasis is on being awareness; not on being aware of objects, but on resting as primordial awareness itself. Primordial awareness is the source in which all objects arise and subside.
As you gently relax into awareness, into listening, the minds compulsive contraction around objects will fade. Silence of being will come more clearly into consciousness as a welcoming to rest and abide. An attitude of open receptivity, free of any goal or anticipation, will facilitate the presence of silence and stillness to be revealed as your natural condition.
As you rest into stillness more profoundly, awareness becomes free of the minds compulsive control, contractions, and identifications. Awareness naturally returns to its non-state of absolute unmanifest potential, the silent abyss beyond all knowing.
Less & less technique
It is perfectly OK to use a more directed technique such as following your breath, or using a simple mantra or centering prayer, if you find that it helps you to not get lost in thought. But always be inclined toward less and less technique. Make time during each meditation period to simply rest as silent, still awareness. True Meditation is progressively letting go of the meditator without getting lost in thought.
If an old painful memory arises during meditation, simply allow it to arise without resisting it or indulging in analyzing, judging, or denying it.
It is useful when experiencing fear in meditation to anchor your attention in something very grounding, such as your breath or even the bottoms of your feet. But dont fight against the fear because this will only increase it. Imagine that you are the Buddha under the Bodhi tree, or Christ in the desert, remaining perfectly still and unmoved by the body-minds nightmare. It may feel very real but it is really nothing more than a convincing illusion.
If you get an insight or sudden understanding of a situation during meditation, simply receive what is given with gratitude, without holding onto anything. Trust that it will still be there when you need it.
If the mind keeps forming images, some favorable and some annoying, just focus attention on your breathing down in your belly. This will help you to not get lost in the images of the mind. Hold the simple intention to rest in the imageless, silent source prior to all images, thoughts, and ideas.

Ani Trime’s 10 Affirmations for a Peaceful and Open Mind – Lion’s Roar
Posted: at 11:50 am
The late Tibetan Buddhist nun Ani Trime developed a series of simple, straightforward affirmations to teach people to plant seeds of positivity in their minds. Here are 10 affirmations from her toolkit for cultivating a freer, more open mind.
Tibetan Buddhist nun Ani Trime Lhamo was always a gruff, plain-spoken West Virginian with the worlds biggest heart. For the better part of four decades, she practiced Buddhist meditation, encountering many of the traditions rich teachings on wisdom and compassion. She found them life-changing and thought they should be accessible to everyone so she made it her lifes work to share them with people in an ordinary, everyday way.
Among all of the Buddhas teachings, the one Ani Trime loved best is With our thoughts we make our world. When you wake up on a gray morning with a full agenda and dread the day, you generally get a dreadful day. But you can train your mind; you can learn to see what youre thinking and cultivate ways of thinking that are healing, positive, and helpful to you and to others. You can plant different seeds in your mind and see what grows. In fact, thats she called our meditation group The Garden Club.
Ani Trime developed a series of simple, straightforward affirmations to teach people to plant different seeds a toolkit for cultivating a freer, healthier, more open mind. Over the years, she refined the affirmations working hard to make them practical and clear.
Ani Trimes Little Book of Affirmations136 pages; 3.6 x 4.75Full-color; illustrations throughout$12.95; hardcoverStorey Publishing
A few months before her death in 2016 at the age of 88, Ani Trime set out to preserve these affirmations. She wanted to offer one affirmation to work with each week in the year, a tool to tend the minds garden. Although she couldnt complete her book of affirmations, those of us who knew and loved her did, and we continue to use it in meditation. Now, thanks to a group of talented artists gathered by Marzena Torzecka, an illustrated edition of Trimes 52 affirmations is available to everyone: Ani Trimes Little Book of Affirmations.
To work with these affirmations, begin by sitting in meditation for 5 to 10 minutes. Then bring the affirmation to mind. Say the first part of the affirmation in your mind as you breathe in; and say the second part of the affirmation as you breathe out.
As you say the affirmation, you might let yourself connect it to some situation in your life, but resist the urge to analyze it much. Instead, just stay with the affirmation and let it ease your way through whatever comes up.
After you have done a number of breaths 7, 10, 21, whatever you like let that effort go and return to silent meditation for a few moments. Notice what your mind and heart feel like. If you find a particular affirmation useful, you might like to repeat it at various points during the day, to keep it fresh.

Have you ever tried experiencing the benefits of Meditation and even tried doing it? Yes? No? When many of the people think of Meditation, they often feel uncomfortable because there are myths that may create the reasons for not practicing Meditation. It is a legitimate exercise of mind which carries uncountable benefits for your mind like reducing the stress level, making a mind lighter and peaceful.
A brief understanding of Meditation
There is not only one type of mediation, and theres a lot. A few examples are Zen mediation (to gain experience with nature of existence), Kundalini Yoga (helps to incorporates movements), and mindfulness meditation (a popular meditation technique which allows you to become more aware of the surroundings). In simple words, Meditation is an exercise that helps an individual to know its inner soul.
Common Characteristics of Meditation-For beginners
A guide of Meditation for Beginners
I know its hard for a beginner to sit for hours and meditate. Sitting and meditating means, emptying your mind, not thinking anything, and listening to your breath. But to solve this issue you can try a self-help app for meditation.
Mindtastik is a guided meditation app that you can use to practice meditation with bliss and mindfulness. A beginner individual can start meditating from this app with simple meditation exercises and progress to add it to the daily routine. Mindtastik app offers meditation exercises for every level and helps you relieve stress, anxiety, sleep better and much more.
You can download the Mindtastik app from the official Google Play Store & App Store for free.
If you are reading this, you can immediately begin to meditating by following the simple steps and see if Meditation is your thing.
First and foremost, choose a convenient time and place
Meditation is an exercise that is done to relax your mind, so it is essential to select a time when you know youll not be disturbed. If you can manage to find a convenient time during either sunrise or sunset, that is the ideal thing you can do to calm your mind. Undoubtedly, to keep your mind calm, you need a calm place. So, find a quiet place and have peaceful surroundings too. Both the factors will give you an enjoyable meditation.
Choose your comfortable position to sit
Be comfortable and relax while meditating. Sit in a position that makes you comfortable. Try to sit straight as much as possible, and make sure to close your eyes throughout the process.
Listen to your breath
After choosing a convenient time, place, and comfortable positing to sit, listening to your breath is one of the primary ways to get concentrated while meditating. Initially, take few deep breaths, inhale from the nose and exhale through the mouth. And then slowly steadily, feel your body, and even scan your body. Throughout the process of Meditation, you will be doing this without moving anywhere.
Be patient while ending your Meditation
Dont get in a hurry after completing your meditation process. Once done, feel relax and open your eyes gently, and then take some time to make you aware of your surroundings.
Why should an individual try Meditation at least once in a life?
Have you met anyone who does Meditation regularly? If yes, you must have found something peaceful in that person which you might dont have. If No, I would like to share the reasons why an individual should try Meditation in their lives.
Meditation is neither like a superpower which youll be going to have if you meditate, nor a magic remedy. But still, science has proved this one of the most excellent ways for mental calmness. And when you experience it, you will be thrilled with the results.
Here are the results which people are getting already because of their meditation regularity.
* Increase the power of thinking and awareness
Meditation helps an individual to control their thought process and increases the realization of their thoughts. Usually, our thoughts control us, and they took us on a ride throughout the day. The power of Meditation helps you to determine that with which thought one should move ahead.
* Decreases the level of stress
In recent years, studies have been found that todays surroundings are increasing the level of stress and mental illness. Meditation is one of the ways to get rid of psychological stress.
* Increase the level of concentration
Having a concentration on one thing is difficult in todays life. Meditation increases the level of attention, and even innate ability to focus.
* It is free
The most crucial aspect of Meditation is, it is free at home. Anyone can do it; no money is required. You can do it at your home, office, or even on vacation if you have added Meditation in your routine. Give it a try, and you will be forced to add it to your routine life soon.

Kanye West Is Building An Amphitheater Known As "The West Meditation Space" – AllHipHop
Posted: at 11:50 am
(AllHipHop News) Kanye West is plotting to build a massive amphitheater on his ranch in Wyoming.
Back in September, the rappers wife Kim Kardashian revealed the star had bought the sprawling property, known as Monster Lake Ranch, and was keen to relocate his family from Calabasas, California.
While Kim later told her husband the move would have to be put on hold while she studied for her legal bar exam, which she is planning to take in 2024 in Los Angeles, the Jesus Is King hitmaker is moving forward with his plans and has begun building work.
According to documents obtained by TMZ, he wants to build a 70,684-square-foot amphitheater, with photos of the site showing hes already cleared an area for development.
In his filing, the "Gold Digger" musician describes the facility as the West Meditation Space Large Impact Structure, and states the facility will be open-air.
