What meditation actually does to your brain and how to measure it – Varsity

A simple Google search of the term mindfulness provides countless search results detailing various tips on how to practice mindfulness in your daily life and its endless health benefits. Meditation and mindfulness seem to have become catch-all phrases for mental and physical well-being, associated with emotional regulation and everyday self-awareness.
Practicing mindfulness is shown to have improved health benefits associated with blood pressure, cardiovascular health, and obesity. However, its advantages arent just limited to physical benefits the ability to practice self-awareness and attentiveness through meditative practices has been linked to lowered stress levels and reduced symptoms for mental disorders.
Meditation has clear psychological advantages in helping individuals deal with increased stress levels, improve attention, and build resiliency. However, a problem often arises with researching these claims: the lack of quantitative data to back up these statements.
While studies have explored the effects of meditation and have found mindfulness to be somewhat effective in aiding emotional regulation, these studies often lack appropriate measures to determine the significance of their results.
Recently, a new U of T-affiliated study published in the Frontiers journal highlighted the use of machine learning and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) technology to obtain quantifiable data that measures the mental states of individuals practicing meditation. It provides a promising approach to objectively assessing the effects of mindfulness on overall well-being.
The two types of attention
The lack of quantifiable data within mindfulness research makes it difficult to research what the meditating mind goes through namely, how ones attention is affected. The U of T-affiliated study focused on trying to identify one type of attention called internal attention in the brain through fMRI technology and machine learning.
In an interview with The Varsity, Dr. Norman Farb, a professor of psychology and a co-author of the study, noted that internal attention states are all about whats happening inside your own mind or inside your own body. Its experiences that wouldnt be accessible to someone else. This is contrasted with external attention, where you pay attention to stimuli from the outside world like sights and sounds.
The term internal attention was first coined in a 2011 study from Yale University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology psychologists. They described it as the predominant mode of attention used to access information already stored in the brain, such as retrieving long-term memories or making abstract decisions, like what to eat for lunch.
At the interface between internal and external attention is working memory, used for making decisions that involve immediate sensory information. For example, a student reading an essay will try to piece together the structure of the argument as they read.
Attention and mindfulness
Mindfulness practices often centre on evaluating the usefulness of thoughts and emotions. Farb explained that this kind of cognitive processing is actually an internal attention state because we are trying to access information already in the mind: our thoughts.
If the thought is wrong or unhealthy, or misconstruing a situation, then everything that comes after it is going to be wrong, he said. So thats the source that you want to attend to, like whats happening internally and how I perceive a situation.
He further elaborated that meditation is really a process of introspection.
In the classic sense, Im really looking internally at whats playing out inside me to understand the building blocks of much more obvious responses that are full blown emotions or a full blown move into hostility or avoidance, he said. This process of introspection supports the emotional regulation that is commonly the aim of practicing mindfulness.
The study suggests that being able to measure internal attention states would allow researchers to identify moments when participants lose focus on mindfulness tasks, and would provide crucial insight into the effectiveness of the meditation process for mindfulness practitioners of all experience levels.
Using machine learning to measure attention states
Being able to monitor these mental states would more objectively indicate whether meditational practices impact behaviour or alleviate stress, as mindfulness activities largely focus on emotional regulation and healthy self-reflection.
The study employs the use of machine learning analysis and fMRI technology in order to predict and track patterns of activity within a participants mind based on pre-labelled data. This process of machine learning involves feeding a set of data into an algorithm with predetermined conditions based on the specific factor being measured.
In this study, researchers asked 16 participants to go through a set of meditation activities designed to create internal attention states. Their brain activity was measured using an fMRI machine. Afterward, an algorithm was trained on the data until it could detect the distinct patterns of neural activity associated with meditation.
The study found that significant neural patterns associated with different attention states were present within all participants. It recorded specific patterns associated with meditative breathing for 87.5 per cent of participants through this methodology, including novice participants.
Once trained, the algorithm was able to accurately detect internal attention from the data 42 per cent of the time which was considered significant because a random guess would be successful 20 per cent of the time. This shows that the choices the algorithm made were not due to chance, but rather a genuine ability to recognize meditation from brain activity data.
As Farb explained, we want to validate that when we do know the right answer, that [the algorithm is] getting the right answer above chance, [that] it actually is making informed decisions. And then, we can try to apply it to situations where were not so sure whats happening.
While Farb cautioned that the relatively small number of study participants makes this result more of a proof of concept than a landmark breakthrough, the results of this study still provide an encouraging future for the use of machine learning in neuroscience.
The tested methods may be used to further understand mindfulness training and provide quantitative evidence that supports the effectiveness of mindfulness. Meditation may work for some mental health concerns; for others, medication or therapy might be more effective. Either way, an improved understanding of meditations effects will help us to prescribe the right course of action.
As Farb put it, there isnt a one-size-fits-all [approach to] mental health care, but understanding how each of these things works might make us better at guessing.

I actually cant count how many times a friend, an article, or a news report has recommended that the best way to deal with 2020 anxiety is to meditate. To which I am constantly asking: WHEN? Chris Hemsworth feels my pain. And he just made a series of videos illustrating what parents go through when they try to practice meditation or any kind of self-care this year with children in the house.
Is it just me, or is it getting harder and harder to find a place where you can just get away from it all? Hemsworth asks in a series of videos for his wellness app Centr aptly titled Affirmations That Positively Absolutely Probably (Most Likely) WILL NOT Make Your 2020 Worse. The best of them features the Thor actor sitting on the bottom of his pool, apparently the only place he could find peace and quiet. Except not.
Imagine yourself far, far away from wherever youve been stuck lately, he says in voiceover as we watch him struggling to remain crosslegged underwater. There are no distractions here. Nothing to break your calm. No one demanding your attention.
Except as he says this, one of his sons swims into the frame.
Simply push your worries away, he goes on, physically pushing his son away, until its just you, your thoughts and this moment of absolute tranquility.
The boy were not sure whether its Sasha or Tristan, his 6-year-old twins keeps buzzing past his dad. He is both the very manifestation of those thoughts that intrude whenever we try to meditate, and also just like every child who notices their parent is trying to do something for themselves.

Nearly every great leader will refer to leadership meditations using different terms. The point is to organize your thoughts, value systems and imagination. The practice readies the most valuable asset on the farm or in any business for your highest of responsibilities. Those are problem-solving, decision-making, innovation and planning.
IBMs founder Tom Watson posted the infamous THINK signs that hang throughout IBM to this day. Google was credited with its hypergrowth phase due to its policy of dedicating 20% of employees time to thinking and working on innovation and new ideas. Odds are, if you think about your best breakthroughs, then many of them may have come in the shower; on a walk; or while leaning back midafternoon with a java, tea or sodaor even after 5 p.m. with a beerin hand.
Im not a Buddhist, but I once read of Gautamas five meditations in a book by James Allen, the author of the classic As A Man Thinketh. Allen and the five meditations inspired me to write five similar questions that would be more akin to what Watson of IBM posited to his team and what Peter Drucker suggested leaders think upon in order to innovate in high-impact areas.
The practice is simple. Grab your drink of choice. Sit down, relax, read the questions, and just think for three to five minutes about ideas relating to each question. Your mind will wander, but bring it back to the point, take a sip, think some more, and keep coming back to the answers that come to your mind as you ponder the questions.
Only after youve invested that three to five minutes, consider writing down your best ideas and thoughts. Odds are you will stumble on some gold in a matter of days, not weeks, and results in months, not years.
Now, stop working, and start thinking!

How to Meditate When You Have No Idea Where to Start – Self

If youre wondering how to meditate, theres a good chance its because youve heard all sorts of things about how good it can be for you. People love to suggest meditation for a variety of reasons: to reduce stress and anxiety, to ease depression, to put you to sleep, to make you feel more present, to magically transform you into a better, more grounded human being. The claims go on and on. And while the benefits of meditation have been greatly exaggerated in a lot of ways, plenty of people find it to be a worthwhile practice and we agree. With everything going on in the world, its a solid time to explore meditation and whether it might be useful for you too.
Meditation may seem simpleand in many ways, it isbut people are often unsure where to start and whether theyre doing it correctly. To help you learn how to meditate and integrate it into your life, SELF asked meditation experts some of your most common meditation questions.
First things first, there are many different kinds of meditation. Meditation is generally used as a broad umbrella term that covers a wide array of contemplative practices, many of which are drawn from Buddhist traditions but have often been adapted and secularized for application in Western society, neuroscientist Wendy Hasenkamp, Ph.D., science director at the Mind & Life Institute and visiting professor of contemplative sciences at the University of Virginia, previously told SELF.
With that in mind, the questions of what meditation is and how to meditate arent exactly straightforward ones. Its kind of like asking how to play sports, Diana Winston, the director of mindfulness education at the UCLA Mindful Awareness Research Center and the author of The Little Book of Being, tells SELF. Just like there are many types of sports, there are many types of meditation, she says. And just like different sports share important things in common (like competition and physical activity), meditation has core tenets too. I define meditation as any practice that cultivates inward investigation, says Winston.
For this article, were going to focus mostly on mindfulness meditation. Why? A few reasons. For one, mindfulness is at the heart of many different types of meditation. Plus, its very accessible to beginners and has the most convincing body of evidence regarding its mental health benefits (more on that later). Its also a very popular form of meditation, especially in recent years. Chances are, if youre interested in developing a meditation practice to support your mental health, the type of meditation youre thinking of is mindfulness meditation.
Like meditation, theres no single universal definition of mindfulness, but experts generally agree on the gist: focusing on the present moment with openness and without judgment. If you check in on your mind at any point during the day, youll probably notice you're thinking about the past or thinking about the future, or youre generally planning, obsessing, worrying, and catastrophizing, says Winston. Mindfulness is getting in the practice of pulling our minds away from these places to come back to the present moment. And so, mindfulness meditation is the formal practice of cultivating mindfulness.
If all that sounds like a little abstract for you, consider that youve probably meditatedor at least felt meditativeat some point in your life. In my classes, I always tell my skeptical beginners to share their favorite hobby, Laurasia Mattingly, a meditation and mindfulness teacher based in Los Angeles, tells SELF. Then I tell them that theyve meditated before. Any activity that allows you to be fully present without worrying about the future or the past is a doorway into meditation.
Heres where things get a little tricky. The proven scientific benefits of mindfulness meditation are hard to sum up (so much so that SELF has a whole separate explainer on it). The TL;DR is that there are three conditions with a strong and convincing body of evidence to support the effects of meditation: depression, anxiety, and chronic pain. Meaning, a not insignificant amount of meta-reviews and meta-analyses have found that mindfulness meditation can moderately help with symptoms associated with these conditions (or in the case of chronic pain, how people cope with symptoms, at least).
