New Deep Learning Discovery Paves Way for AI Interpretation of Brainwave Data – PR Newswire India

A new paper published in theJournal of Neural Engineering shows the successful first application of self-supervised learning, a very promising recent approach to train deep neural networks, to directly learn what EEG looks like, without using any labelled data
TORONTO, Jan. 25, 2021 /PRNewswire/ --Interpreting the results of electroencephalogram (EEG) graphs, which are used to visualize brain activity of everything from meditation to neurological disorders, is one of the greatest challenges facing brain researchers. Machine learning has the potential to relieve some of this burden, but EEG data is extremely multidimensional and can be expensive, and time-consuming to annotate. It also requires the deep expertise of neurologists and sleep experts. This means there are typically not enough labelled examples for supervised deep neural networks to learn from in order to create an efficient AI.
While labelled-EEGs identifying sleep stages and brain activity are scarce, there is ample unlabeled data that exists. In his new paper, Uncovering the Structure of Clinical EEG Signals with Self-supervised Learning, Interaxon Inc researcher Hubert Banville and researchers at Universit Paris-Saclay, University of Helsinki, and Max Planck Institute applied self-supervised learning to extract features from unlabeled EEGs. Banville found that when limited numbers of labelled data were available, his self-supervised learning approach outperformed traditional supervised learning methods that rely purely on labelled data. These results were obtained on two very different EEG classification problems: identifying sleep stages in overnight recordings, and detecting EEG pathologies. Moreover, without access to any labelled data, his approach also uncovered a fascinating structure in the data that relates to clinical information such as sleep stages, pathology and age.
Put into practice, these intelligent new approaches will allow the scientific community, including researchers at Interaxon Inc., the developer of Muse headbands that has one of the largest brain data (EEG) collections in the world, to leverage, mine and utilize large amounts of unlabelled EEG data to efficiently discover relevant information in EEG. This has potential to improve the performance of algorithms used in everything from consumer sleep and wellness support tools like Muse S, to swifter diagnosis of neurological disorders.

Orgasmic meditation – What is orgasmic meditation? – cosmopolitan.com

There are several different types of meditation, from zen and chakra to yoga, and they all have their benefits. But, theres one that you probably wont find on meditation apps and that is the unique practice of orgasmic meditation, otherwise known as OM.
Orgasmic meditation involves a partner stroking the upper left quadrant of the clitoris (as this part is supposedly the most sensitive) for 15 minutes, gently and with a lubricated finger. Sounds pretty familiar, but how exactly does it work as a form of meditation?
Despite its name, the practice isnt solely for women and people with vulvas to reach the end goal of an orgasm. While a more intense orgasm is a bonus, during this 15-minute session, the focus is on removing any other distractions and prioritising the process of pleasure itself.
It may sound a lot like regular sexual stimulation, give or take a few minutes, however sex and relationship psychotherapist, Miranda Christophers, explains the difference. Orgasmic mediation is to do with the mindfulness aspect. Its being aware that other thoughts may come in, but moving them to one side and then going back into focusing purely on the sensation. It's about focusing within the body rather than within the mind and really noticing the feeling.
Essentially the meditation aspect comes from being present in the moment, rather than focusing too strongly on how long its taking you to reach orgasm, saying the right things or looking at pornography, or your partner.
Orgasmic meditation is a practice that was adopted and made mainstream in 2004 by co-founder of OneTaste, Nicole Daedone. Daedone claims she was introduced to this practice by a Buddhist monk in her 2011 TEDx Talk. During Daedones leadership of the company, she marketed orgasmic meditation as an opportunity for people to reclaim their sexuality, improve their sex lives and even help with recovery from sexual trauma.
Quite a lot of power and pressure to put on such a simple method, but with these claims in mind, its not surprising that orgasmic mediation became so popular.
OneTaste was a US business that taught orgasmic mediation workshops, including dozens of women OM-ing together. It got really popular, but faced a great deal of controversy over the price of its workshops and the way it ran its operations, particularly when Bloomberg published an expose on the company in 2018. "Many whove become involved in the upper echelons describe an organisation that they found ran on predatory sales and pushed members to ignore their financial, emotional, and physical boundaries in ways that left them feeling traumatised," the investigation found.
The company was also described by former community members and staff as similar to a "prostitution ring". OneTaste responded calling the claims outrageous and denied that employees were ecnouraged to engage in sexual acts with each other. Shortly after this, OneTaste closed its US locations.
Orgasmic meditation wasnt exclusive to the US either, TurnOnBritain brought this practice to the UK, also with in-person classes, coaching and events but has since stopped providing these offerings, according to their website. Instead, they are offering private consultations.
There are a range of OM meetup groups worldwide, either no longer running classes or with postponed classes due to COVID-19. So, while OneTaste as a company name may no longer be around, OM affiliates still exist.
Orgasmic mediation centres female pleasure, which is naturally alluring to most. But on a deeper level, and with the alleged benefits in mind, it speaks to those who seek a more profound experience with their bodies.
Miranda says, There is a lot of benefit to focusing the body on sensations and can include genital touching. This can progress into mindful self-pleasure or mindful masturbation. If they're experiencing sexual dysfunction such as vaginismus, its a way they can go into really being present in their body, feeling the sensations, and then allowing arousal to build through that.
Although orgasmic meditation is sold as a partnered experience, somatic psychologist and sex therapist, Dr Holly Richmond, says a woman or person with a vagina can perform this act by themselves too.
This practice creates an intention around sexuality to really focus on how you can feel best in your body, she says. The best sex starts with knowing ourselves, our own bodily exploration and what feels good to us without the projection of what feels good for other people.
While Miranda and Dr Holly see the benefits of orgasmic mediation, they both say it wouldnt be their go-to recommendation for their own clients.
As mentioned, the founding company, OneTaste, had its controversies, but even if you separate the company from the act of orgasmic meditation, it isnt a flawless practice. For Dr Holly, her issue with orgasmic meditation largely lies in the name.
I love that its a practice about presence, and I think all women would benefit from that, but because of the nature of the name orgasmic, it feels like a goal-oriented process, she says.
In my practice, I would work on developing a sexual template with a woman and figure out what turns her on and what her buttons for desire and arousal are. This would be a few weeks or months into her self-pleasure protocol.
It could hurt if she just went for orgasmic meditation with the goal of this is definitely going to help me reach orgasm. But if this practice doesnt work for her, I wouldn't want to put any more shame or blame, [or aid in] someone feeling broken or incapable, so that's why I like to start with just self-exploration and pleasure.
As a result, focusing on the mindfulness aspect of orgasmic meditation is the priority here, but even with that, Miranda states that this practice shouldnt be seen as the be all and end all of all things pleasure in attempts to be one with your body.
Mindful pleasure is great, but there's nothing wrong with also enjoying more eroticised pleasures and orgasms. Nothing needs to be one dimensional, she says.
You could try different things and the important thing is that nothing becomes too narrow. The wider the lens and interests, then the more enjoyable and healthier somebody's sex life may be.
Whatever you might think of orgasmic meditation, if we strip it down to its simplest form of just combining mindfulness and elongated pleasure, its fairly harmless. But, relying on it as a DIY or partnered experience to resolve all of your sexual issues or awaken your sexual wellbeing, isnt recommended by certified therapists - and understandably so.

Considering we move through each day under the impression we are consciously aware of our thoughts and actions, how many times have you found yourself opening the fridge and forgetting what you were looking for?No,just me?
If not, can you honestly say that you are consciously aware of your thoughts and actions at all times?Didnt think so.
What does it mean to be 'mindful'? Simply put, we become more mindful by checking in with ourselves to see where our thoughts have gone, coming back to the physical sense of where we are sitting and what we are feeling.
Meditation can be done anywhere:on the bus, in the doctors waiting room, 5 minutes before an exam.Its not the length of time you spend, albeitthe longer the better, but the quality.
How do we do it? If you would like to dip your toe in the water, follow these steps:
Step1: Find your seat You can sit cross-legged, on the edge of some cushions or on a chair, making sure your back is well supported and your knees are bent at a right angle with feet touching the ground.
If your feet do not touch the ground, prop them up with some books or a footstool.Rest your palms on your thighs and tilt your pelvis forward slightly to ensure the lower back is not rounding.
You may find you need more cushion to sit on if you are on the floor or more support at your lower back if you are on a chair. Either close your eyes or, if youre sitting somewhere in public, pick a point to focus on and soften your gaze.
Step 2: Be awareof your physical presence Begin to notice each part of your body that is in contact with the floor or the chair.Your feet, your thighs, your 'sit-bones', your hands resting on your thighs.
Settle into this pose, feeling your hips heavy and rooted to the ground and the crown of your head extending towards the ceiling.
Step 3: Be awareof the external environment Start to notice the sounds around you - children playing, traffic, birds singing.Notice how the air feels. Observe all of these things but take an imaginary step back from them.Treat them as you would wallpaper in a room.You know its there but you no longer really see it.
Step 4: Bring awareness internally As you have stepped away from what is going on around you, begin to take stock of your thoughts.Where is your mind going right now?Are you caught up with the events of the week that has passed, the people who may have gotten on your nerves?
Or are you racing ahead to the future?The lists, the chores, all of the things you need to do, the places you need to be, the things you need to have.Try to watch each thought as if you were watching someone else think it.As if you were watching a movie with someone playing you and thinking your thoughts.
Step 5: Bring your focus to your breathing Without changing anything, become aware of how you are breathing.How is the breath entering your body?Where does it go when it is in there and how does it leave?Is it fast or slow?Deep or shallow?
Then begin to draw your breath down into the belly, lengthening the inhalation and the exhalation to really slow the breath down.Steps 1-4 are really the setup stages and shouldn't take very long.
Now we begin to meditate:
Start by counting each inhalation until you reach the number 10.Then start again.Do this for a little while
Then switch to count each exhalation until you reach the number 10. And then start again. Dont worry if you lose count or concentration.Just start again.
After a little while, let go of any focus and just see where your mind wanders off too.Again, dont get too concerned with what youre thinking about.Consider yourself a non-judgemental observer.
Following that, begin to bring your attention to where you feel the breath entering the body. This might be at the nostrils, the back of the throat, wherever it is for you, focus on that for the remainder of the session.
Step 6: Come back to the present Following these steps, begin to bring awareness again to the sounds around you, your physical presence and start to bring yourself slowly out of 'the zone.Sit for a while to let yourself settle before going about your day.

How Headspace is helping users cope using meditation amid COVID-19 – Yahoo Finance

Headspace Co-Founder Andy Puddicombe joins Yahoo Finance Live to discuss the growth of guided meditation and the companys new Netflix series.
- Downloads for mobile mental health apps have surged during this pandemic as the COVID-19 pandemic takes a psychological toll on people. That has led to a boom in business for Headspace. Let's bring in the co-founder of Headspace, Andy Puddicombe. We should also note that he's also a former Buddhist monk.
Andy, let's talk about the growth that you have seen, though. Walk me through some of your numbers here. Early on in the pandemic, of course, there was a lot of attention on Headspace. Clearly you have sort of expanded beyond the app now.
ANDY PUDDICOMBE: Yeah, I think, you know, early on in the pandemic, I would say even if you go back and rewind to sort of March and April of last year, we saw downloads sort of double overnight. And a huge amount-- as you say, huge amount of attention, I think, recognition that it wasn't just physical sort of illness that people were in danger of.
A lot of people were struggling kind of with their mind. And we saw that extend sort of beyond just sort of the consumer base as well, right through into sort of B2B, for example, and business organizations looking at how they can better look after their team members when they're at home, often in very sort of challenging situations. So we've seen across the whole sort of business quite a big increase over the last 12 months or so.
- Yeah, there's no shortage of reasons here in the pandemic to focus in on mental health and really try and meditate. And obviously the benefits out there have been proven in certain studies. But when you think about the increasing competition, I was shocked to see one-- one, I guess, article looking at more than 2,500 apps launching since 2015 to focus in on the meditation space. What is it that you at Headspace do differently to maybe help people on that journey?

ANDY PUDDICOMBE: Yeah, it's amazing. When we-- we started back in sort of 2010, and we launched the app in 2012. And at that time, there were-- there were no other meditation apps. And I know-- I hear there's over sort of 5,000 now. So you're right. A lot-- a lot of sort of attention in this space.
We-- we decided very early on to focus on two things, and that's authenticity and science. We feel that the-- you know, we didn't come up with these things. Meditation has been around for sort of 2 and 1/2, 3,000 years. And we look at that as R&D. And that's a lot of R&D.
And it works because it's sort of been-- you know, that authenticity has been sort of looked after over the years. So we try not to mess with that too much. But at the same time, we try and give it additional sort of credibility by sort of measuring the scientific benefits of meditation and mindfulness.
So we have over 75 sort of clinical trials in process. 25 are already completed and have been published. But for us, it's a really important thing, to try and bring together kind of that, as I say, that authentic sort of essence and mix it with sort of modern-day-- modern-day science.
- Yeah, it does feel like there has been a real shift in the way at least Americans look at meditation and how effective that is to-- to the way we live every day. You've already got a Netflix series out as well. Where do you see the business going from here? The app, as popular as it is, I imagine isn't where you plan to end Headspace.
ANDY PUDDICOMBE: [LAUGHS] Well, I mean, I think like all of these things. You know, like, our-- our vision was to improve-- we set out to improve the health and happiness of the world. It's something-- it's still our North Star. The app is obviously an integral part of that. It allows us to reach an incredible number of people around the world.
And the Netflix show is really exciting because I think, you know, when we first launched, people were like, really? Meditation on your phone? But isn't the phone stressful? And in the same way, when we launched on Netflix, it was like, really, meditation? Isn't that just-- you know, on an entertainment platform, how can that work?
And what we've discovered is that it's reached a huge number of people in the same way that when we launched on the phone, it was meeting people where they were. In the same way now, through Netflix, we're meeting people where they are. And we'll continue to do that.
I think where you'll probably see the biggest shift is within health care. So we have a big science and health team, and they're working to sort of integrate Headspace fully into sort of medical environments to ensure that we get to a stage where sort of meditation is democratized, where anyone can get access to it. And hopefully in the future, people will even have it paid for by their health care insurance.
- Yeah, I could see that happening. I mean, for someone like me, who maybe hasn't been attached to the meditation space-- we've had Deepak Chopra come on the show a number of times. He's personally tried to help. You know, there's obviously the apps, like Headspace out there. There's podcasts now. There's a lot of things.
For whatever reason, very difficult for me to get involved. But when it comes to maybe the surprises that you've seen since the space has grown, what has shocked you the most? Is it kind of the people who maybe hadn't focused in on meditation now being drawn into this? Is it the money that's now attached to this space and investors finally embracing meditation for what it can be? What, to you, as the founder of Headspace, stands out?
ANDY PUDDICOMBE: It's a great question. I think the efficacy hasn't surprised me. I'm really happy to see the science kind of catch up and to prove that there are kind of very real benefits. I think the surprise is more the-- sort of the background. It's the-- it's not just meditation.
For me, this is about kind of the health of the mind. And it's sort of the health of the mind catching up with the health of the body. We've had decades where we've talked about how important it is to look after the body. And yet we've kind of ignored how important it is to actually be happy internally, regardless of how healthy we are on the outside.
So I think it's that commentary and seeing it's more sort of socially acceptable now for people to talk about their internal struggles, to have permission, maybe, to talk about struggling with sleep, or feeling anxious, or feeling stressed. And I feel like that's the starting point. Unless we can talk about those things as a society, as a community, then nothing really changes. So that's the thing that kind of makes me happiest. And-- and hopefully that will-- that's a trend that will continue on.
- And Andy, you said earlier about integrating Headspace into the medical space. What exactly does that integration look like? What are some of the conversations you're having around that?
ANDY PUDDICOMBE: Yeah, so right now, for example, in fact, a good number of referrals come from doctors or from therapists. The difference is that right now, sort of consumers pay direct for that. I think in the future-- and we're already kind of partnering with some-- some large health insurance companies.
But in the future, I think there's the potential for that to be covered by your health insurance, but also to have it part of a system of care. So we've worked with-- we've chatted with hospitals about when patients go in for surgery, for example. How could we best prepare a patient for surgery in reducing anxiety, in making sure they feel better prepared?
Likewise, on the other side of that, when they're recovering, how do we help to create the most conducive conditions for recovery? So, you know, it's an interesting space, right? You're lying there in hospital. You actually can't do a huge amount, and it's very easy to just look for distraction, when actually we could use that time to actually improve the-- not only the health of the mind, but actually to increase the speed of recovery in the body as well.

Can you guess what every womans worst nightmare is?
Promising Young Woman follows Cassandra, who has dropped out of medical school and is now working in a coffee shop and living with her parents. She is also still navigating the traumatic experiences of some specific events that took place during her time in medical school.
This is an absolute firecracker of a film. Director Emerald Fennell and actressCarey Mulligan have crafted a blistering, terrifying tour-de-force that examines every inch and crevice of feminine rage. What happens when a woman finally has enough? What happens when a woman is subjected to too much abuse and mental turmoil? The answer might surprise you, but it shouldnt. Many might call the lengths that Mulligans character Cassandra goes in this film unrealistic, but I could only watch in awe at all the things she did here in subdued agreement. The trailers for this film led me to believe that this was about something else in terms of the reasoning behind Cassandras warpath of rage. Theres a nice level of subversion of expectation when its revealed what exactly Mulligan is doing, why she is doing it and who she is doing it for. I wont spoil anything so you can learn for yourself what lies beyond any initial trappings you may have about this film.
One of the best things this film does is that it does not try to mount a smear campaign against all men. Fennell is smart enough to navigate around this very broad sentiment, even if the men in the film certainly might warrant this response. Fennells screenplay and direction are top notch its almost unbelievable this is her directorial debut. She has such an immensely strong vision and her screenplay only further helps to sell everything shes saying here. Her grasp on her creation is astonishing. I cannot wait to see what she will do next, and until then, I will be waiting with baited breath.
Carey Mulligan is a performer Ive long been enamored with dueto her ability to kill just about any role, but her performance here might just be her very best. Shes so insanely capable of curating a stunning array of emotions in mere minutes, that Id dare to call it dangerous at how fast I sided with her. I was the literal embodiment of Lucille Bluth saying Good for her.
What I find most interesting about the film is it has familiar beats you might find in other revenge films, but this one focuses more on the grief that follows afterwards and how that grief can affect the ones around you who may not even be directly harmed. Fennell understands this thoroughly and uses this to her utmost advantage in telling her story.
I havent seen a film quite like Promising Young Woman in a long time. Each time I thought I pinpointed where I believed the film to be going, it took a whole new, unexpected turn. This is most notable in that absolutely insane ending. I just stared at the screen, mouth agape and audibly said, Ohoh shit! It was a bold move going the route it took, but it payed off in spades. Its absolutely shocking, but I was utterly transfixed, much like with the rest of the film. The film has a distinctive, visual style to boot that features some of my favorite cinematography of the last year. A moment near the end involving sunlight is like a painting, and the scene where Cassandra stands in the middle of a blue outline frame is stunning, then when Bo Burnhams character reaches down to kiss her slightly in and out of that blue frame is a damn near perfect biblical image. The framing and visual style of this film is so aesthetically pleasing in many ways.
2020 was a very strange year, especially in the world of film, but Promising Young Woman is so fantastic, so shocking and so unique it will absolutely be the film that defined 2020 for me. Believe the hype.
