Huron County says Namaste to new business that aims to unmask meditation

Meditation, according to the Oxford Dictionary, is to think deeply or focus one's mind for a period of time, in silence or with the aid of chanting, for religious or spiritual purposes or as a method of relaxation.
Brenda Murphy is the owner of Interior Consciousness, a business that focuses on teaching and educating people about meditation and mindfulness. Launched this past March, Interior Consciousness aims to help those interested in meditation to achieve their wellness goals and assist in co-creating their lives.
By calming the mind, meditation and the practice of mindfulness allows for us to become more thoughtful and responsive instead of reactive human beings, Murphy said. Mindfulness is present moment awareness without judgment.
Murphys interest and practice of meditation began when she was a teenage athlete where she would meditate and do some yoga before and after each workout session. This ritual stuck with her throughout university and adolescence, as she became a wife, a mother and a business professional. Her practice deepened a few years ago after being involved in a propane explosion, which she describes on her website as devastating.
My injuries matched those of our home: shell intact, but the inside destroyed, Murphy writes. My life as I knew it was gone and I was required to build and heal both the physical home and the spiritual home.
With the damage her home received and sustaining injuries to her brain, lungs, ears, sinuses and central nervous system, Murphy was left with not only pain and ruin but Post Traumatic Stress Disorder as well.
Depression, crippling anxiety, anger and hopelessness were my new unwanted friends and I joined the club of walking wounded, Murphy writes. I decided to give myself permission to heal in a way that spoke to me. That is not to say that the ailments suddenly disappeared, although some have; it means that with my meditation and mindfulness practice, I no longer suffer. Today I am living a life of joy, peace and vitality.
It was with this new outlook that she chose to rise above and made the decision to share her experience and knowledge with the community in the form of Interior Consciousness. She is a dedicated to the practice of meditation and yoga, receiving her certification in January of this year through the McLean Meditation Institute in Sedona, AZ.
After practicing meditation and yoga for 35 years, I feel that with my certification I finally have the knowledge to compliment my personal experience, Murphy said. I wanted to share my experience and knowledge with our community.

Students, teachers in government schools to get Vipassana lessons

Vipassana is an ancient meditation technique of India which was also practiced and preached by Lord Gautam Buddha.
Teachers and students in government schools in the city will soon have the option of taking Vipassana meditation lessons and the Delhi government will bear the expenses involved in the training.
Deputy Chief Minister and in-charge Minister of Education Department Manish Sisodia in a tweet on Monday said, "Preparations are afoot to train students of government school in Vipassana mediation."
"Teachers of these schools will be taught Vipassana and orders have been issued in this regard. They will be sent for training in Vipassana at the official expenditure," he said on the micro-blogging site.He said the Delhi government recently issued orders for training and learning of Vipassana meditation technique to the teachers and students of state government schools. The order, however, is not mandatory and only those interested can volunteer for the programme.
"Vipassana will be helpful in personality development and stress management," he added. Incidentally, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is an ardent practitioner of Vipassana and had once expressed his desire to devote himself to it after retiring from politics.
Vipassana is an ancient meditation technique of India which was also practiced and preached by Lord Gautam Buddha.It is believed to provide peace of mind and happiness to its practitioner.

Mindfulness very gently moving around the world’s classrooms

What is happening?
Mindfulness meditation the practice of quietening the mind to bring awareness and attention to the present moment is increasingly being used in schools around the world as a tool to improve student wellbeing and enhance academic performance. Although originating in Buddhist religious tradition, it is a secular form of the practice that has become popular in classrooms and workplaces.
One particular program making headway on an international scale is the Britain-based Mindfulness in Schools Project. It provides two main courses designed specifically by teachers for use in the classroom: ".b" pronounced "dot-be" (Stop, Breathe and Be) aimed at older children, and "Paws-be" geared towards 7- to 11-year-olds. Now taught in more than 20 countries with a curriculum translated into numerous languages, co-founder Richard Burnett hopes that mindfulness meditation will one day be taught in all schools "just like reading and writing".
Why is it happening?

In recent years, mindfulness training has been incorporated into workplaces around the world, including government organisations, companies, hospitals and prisons. Research has overwhelmingly highlighted the many benefits of the practice in adult populations, including enhanced performance, improved emotional management and reduced workplace stress; inspiring even more workplaces to implement mindfulness training programs.
These favourable results have led educators to consider the potential value of mindfulness meditation in schools to improve student concentration and overall wellbeing; particularly given the myriad multimedia distractions they face and the rising incidence of anxiety and depression.
Where is it happening?
This year, the Mindfulness in Schools Project has scheduled teacher training in Scotland, Ireland, the United States, Canada, Finland, Thailand, the Netherlands and Australia. Its ".b" curriculum has been translated into Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Icelandic, French, German and Spanish, indicating its growing international appeal. However, it is just one of many mindfulness programs currently in operation.
