The start of a new year is the perfect time to re-evaluate your fitness goals especially if you have had an indulgent festive season.

Every year brings new trends, with some more credible than others (remember the vibrating body belt?).

Here, the UAEs experts sort the fads from the facts so you can start 2024 with a well-informed fitness plan.

Fitness watches and trackers have been around for a while, but in 2024 the gadgets are stepping up a gear to provide more personalised stats and feedback.

In a bid to gain insight into our blood sugar levels, more of us will be adding a continuous glucose monitor to our wearables wardrobe.

The disposable sensors usually last about two weeks and attach directly to the skin (usually the upper arm) to provide information about the effect of diet and exercise.

Cyrus Rustom, owner of Boxica Gym in Dubais Studio City, explains: Glucose monitors are going to become more popular as people begin to understand that high sugar intake and unstable blood glucose levels are very bad for you.

People want to manage their blood sugar so they live longer, healthier and leaner lives.

This year, more of us will ditch extreme exercise and restrictive diets to focus on sustainable habits that nurture a lasting state of health.

According to Lauren Goggs, a personal trainer at Dubais Reset Fitness, this means focusing less on squatting double your body weight and more on being able to pick up your keys in later life.

Gone are the days where the fitness industry focuses on HIIT training, your one rep max and how long you can pound the treadmill for. Its all about functional fitness, she says.

In 2024, we are likely to see even the big commercial gym players recognising the importance of holistic wellness and adding more mindfulness and meditation sessions to their schedules.

Genetic testing involves studying your DNA to understand different aspects of your genetic make-up.

For fitness enthusiasts, this means getting personalised information on how your genes might affect your response to exercise, what nutrition works best for you and your overall well-being.

Genetic testing is becoming more available and accurate in discovering what forms of exercise and nutrition your body is best suited to, says Rustom.

The results can inform the way you train, what you eat and even how you sleep, whether that means eating more carbs, avoiding fish, taking up endurance training or upping your vitamin D.

Were going to be seeing a lot more of this personalised approach to fitness in 2024.

Gone are the days of working out in a sweaty warehouse surrounded by grunting meatheads.

In 2024, we will be treating ourselves to a more luxury gym membership with top-notch facilities such as FitnGlam, Studio Pilates and Reset Fitness.

The idea is to make exercise feel like a treat or a day out with friends, rather than a drill in self-flagellation.

Boutiques and even mainstream gyms are focusing on exercise as a wholesome experience rather than just the physical 50-minute class, says Goggs.

Friendship groups and real connections are being formed through gyms, and there has been a real strength in unity through games such as Turf Games, Battle Cancer and Hyrox coming to the Middle East.

If you have not embraced the invigorating chill of an ice bath in 2023, you might have overlooked the trendiest experience of the year. But, if you are still on the fence, fear not this cool trend is set to stay this year.

Recovery is a crucial and often underestimated aspect of overall fitness. It plays a fundamental role in achieving optimal performance, preventing injuries and promoting long-term well-being.

As well as ice baths, red-light therapy will also surge in popularity in 2024. The treatment uses low-level red or near-infrared light to stimulate cellular function and ease muscle pain, and is favoured by athletes after vigorous training.

Supplements will also fly off the shelves as the year progresses, according to Goggs.

It will be a huge year for recovery as we focus more on mental wellness as well as physical well-being, she says. With recovery comes the use of natural supplements, and magnesium has become the miracle mineral, with almost 75 per cent of adults deficient in it.

It can help with sleep, manage the central nervous systems, help us manage anxiety and its great for women's hormonal health.

Lions mane mushrooms are also making their way into the mainstream market, offering instant concentration, energy, focus and help with motivation.

Weight training has gathered momentum in recent years and more people will be jumping on the bicep curling bandwagon in 2024, according to Rustom.

Women particularly are learning that weights don't make you big and bulky, he says.

Weight training is actually good for improving body tone, staying lean, increasing metabolism and generally being healthy and stronger. In 2024, there's going to be a lot more women doing strength-based training and not just cardio all the time.

More people are educating themselves on health and fitness than ever before with podcasts and online tutorials, and we're seeing the effects of that knowledge in the gym.

The old myth that you have to do loads of cardio has been well and truly debunked. As a result, were seeing an increase in people eating well and training all round, including some cardio and some strength training.

Remember the days of Special K starvation, Atkins horror and 5:2 hell? Thankfully, restrictive diets are well behind us in 2024 as we move towards a flexitarian approach.

Flexible eating is all about consuming enough calories and relaxing the macro count, opting for more nutritionally hefty whole foods and avoiding processed rubbish.

We are starting to understand that good bodies are built in the kitchen and each and every one of us is looking to cut out the amount of processed food we have in our diets, shifting towards a more natural, organic stocked cupboard, says Goggs.

Fads like electrical muscle stimulation live and die very quickly as people realise there are only so many problems you can throw money at and there are no shortcuts to a long sustainable healthy life.

Jackson Browne, a renowned American rock musician, singer, songwriter, and social activist, recently had a health scare while on tour. It forced him to cancel shows in Sydney and Melbourne. But, positive news has since followed.

According to touring agency Frontier Touring, Brownes health has improved, allowing him to continue his shows in New Zealand.

What got everyone worried? It was the news of Jackson Browne's illness, the information regarding which has been kept private. Browne was unable to perform due to his declining health, which stirred the concern of fans worldwide. He was reported to be trying out antibiotics and had undergone a period of vocal rest.

However, the exact kind of infection Jackson Browne was suffering from wasn't publicly disclosed.

Despite his health setback, Browne expressed his commitment to fans and rescheduled the shows he was forced to cancel. True to his words, he announced new dates for Melbourne on November 29, 2023, and Sydney on December 1, 2023.

The swift recover and return to his busy tour schedule is indeed good news for all of his fans. The tour has marked Browne's first live performances in both countries in five years. Supporting him on the tour is the Australian artist Liz Stringer, well-appreciated for her heartfelt lyrics and soulful tunes.

Fans of Michael Bolton, the famous musician, were taken by surprise when he announced last Friday that he had stopped touring and performing due to a sudden health issue. The reason was a brain tumor that doctors discovered in him late last year.

Unexpected hardships happen to all of us at times. They also happened to Bolton in the year 2023. Just before the world was preparing to celebrate Christmas and New Year, he found out about a brain tumor in his head. The doctors told Bolton that he needed urgent surgery to get better.

Bolton shared this with his fans on social media, both on Facebook and Instagram. His message read:

His surgery was a success. He didn't fail to appreciate them either. He thanked his fantastic medical team for their skilled work.

Now, Bolton is at home, safe and sound. His family is taking good care of him, and he's getting stronger day by day. He said:

Michael Bolton might be taking a break from performing, but that doesn't mean he's idle. His fans miss his performances, but Bolton reassured them. He wrote that he was disappointed to postpone his shows but was trying his best to get back to performing soon post brain tumour surgery.

Though Michael Bolton started his career as a hard rock singer in the 1970s, it was his transition into pop rock in the '80s and '90s that won him the most love. His popular romantic songs such as "Thats What Love Is All About," and "When a Man Loves a Woman" are still adored by his fans.

He even bagged two Grammy awards for "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You" and "When a Man Loves a Woman." His last crowd's favorite was "Go the Distance," a song he sang for the 1997 Disney movie "Hercules."

But Bolton's been in the media for more than his songs. He has amused his fans by dressing up as various famous movie characters for a song on "Saturday Night Live. Bolton has even made cameos in commercials for big brands.

Last year, despite his health decline, he toured in Las Vegas, Mexico, and Italy. His health issue has forced him to pause for a while now.

2024 is here, and that means theres likely been an influx of interest at your local gym, running club, or other fitness establishment. Theres never a bad time to get start working to improve your fitness, but the advent of a new calendar year is a great time to kick off new habits and streaks.

If one of your goals is to improve your fitness or simply burn more fat before swimwear season, you may have considered using an exercise bike or turbo trainer. There are plenty of bikes available in most conventional gyms, but if you're looking to buy one, you've probably heard of Peloton. Aside from being one of the best fitness apps, the company has pioneered the at-home spin-class bike experience with their Peloton Bike, complete with guided workouts with experienced trainers.

However, Peloton isn't cheap. If you're using an exercise bike in the gym, or considering buying a more basic bike without the cost of Peloton's rolling monthly subscription, you can still get some nuggets of wisdom from one of Peloton's best trainers, Sam Yo, who was kind enough to sit down with TechRadar to discuss the best way to use an exercise bike to get fit in 2024.

Sam draws his professionalism from his kaleidoscope of experiences and uses this to help others achieve their fitness and mindset potential. Having spent two decades in the entertainment industry merged with 15 years as a fitness coach, Sam combines his technical expertise from his training with his serene mindset from his time as an ordained monk in Thailand.

The instantly-familiar act of putting your feet on the pedals and simply cycling makes the exercise bike an easy pick for fitness newcomers. However, even experienced gym users can stand to benefit from regular cycling workouts, both indoors and outdoors.

Cardio is key to our health, whether you do it indoors or outdoors, with the physical and mental benefits helping lower blood pressure, control blood sugar, and improve all-around wellness, Yo explains.

Indoors we have more control of the environment, therefore we can have more consistency in our training. We've all been there when we plan to exercise outside but it's pouring down with rain or your work meetings have overrun, leaving no time before it's dark outside.

On an exercise bike, we can control when we want to simulate climbing a hill by simply turning up the resistance, whereas outside, all you can do is pick a route and follow it. Still, cycling outdoors, whether on a conventional bike or one of the best electric bikes, is important.

The outdoor experience provides a connection to nature, fresh air, and varied terrain, stimulating the senses and offering a change of scenery. There is a thrill that we are constantly adapting to our environment, sparking awareness as opposed to staring at a blank wall or control panel indoors on a machine, Yo says.

Outdoors can be a social and community event with others which is a huge bonus because you have others helping you be accountable to your fitness goals. You can also recreate this on the Peloton App with classes with people from all around the world sending virtual high-fives to encourage one another.

We asked Yo how Peloton tailors its workouts, and how he adjusts his own, to help anyone feel as though theyre able to get involved, regardless of experience levels.

Peloton has many beginner programs for those starting their wellness journey and we are consistently adding more, he explains.

In these classes, there's an emphasis on technique, positive reinforcement, and building confidence. Also, different class durations to ease those into longer classes are also available making it more seamless to schedule a 20-minute class in your day when you know that is all the time you have.

The class instructor will always give a wide range of options for all fitness levels participating so everyone is catered for and can take part which makes it an inclusive experience for all.

If you're just starting out, hop on the bike for 20 minutes on a low level of resistance, perhaps while watching one of the best streaming services or listening to a podcast. You don't have to go all out and leave it all on the bike: you can aim to make exercise enjoyable by making it your time to watch an episode of The Bear, while still getting more movement into your day.

Once you become confident on the bike, you can gradually up the intensity, switching to guided workouts on paid apps like Peloton, Apple Fitness Plus, or free services. Even YouTube has a stack of spin classes, although they're missing key elements of interactivity such as customised music and leaderboards, which apps like Peloton make good use of.

Once users have worked their way through those beginner stages, HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) might appeal to many riders as a time-efficient way to train hard, burn fat and improve fitness. HIIT is very popular, but Yo recommends caution, offering a more balanced plan if weight loss is your goal.

We must remember that HIIT training is a high-performance training method that gets your heart rate over 80% of its max, and when we work at that extreme level we are using glycogen, the stored carbohydrates, as your main energy source, he says.

This will help 'burn' but if you really want to target fat, you have to work at a steady state intensity under 80% of your max heart rate, where fat is used as the main energy source for you to move.

You will have to work for a longer duration, but you have more control over what energy source you are using for your specific goal. My advice is to do a combination of both in your program and know that there is no "quick fix" - just the consistency of working out regularly.

As someone with a heart condition, thats positive news. Id certainly grown concerned a lack of HIIT would essentially cause me to struggle to shift fat. Low-intensity, steady-state cardio done for longer periods is simple and achievable even off the bike: one writer tried swapping the gym for getting 10,000 steps in every day for a week.

Once you can cycle for 20 minutes on a low resistance, try upping the resistance by one or two points and your time by five or 10 minutes. Soon you'll be doing harder, longer workouts, binge-watching some of the top TV shows of 2024 while putting in some serious virtual miles.

So, what final advice does Yo have for fitness newcomers in 2024? In short, have fun with it.

First identify what your goal is, how many times you want to exercise and most importantly what you enjoy doing, he explains.

There is no point putting your mind and body through something that you don't enjoy because in the long-term you will probably quit. A fitness plan can be catered to anybody's needs but establishing your individual why, motivation and joy will keep you going.

You will discover your inner strength with every new milestone but it starts with step one...just move!

I wore every Apple Watch for a week while fitness training and here are 5 surprising things I learned – iMore

When the Apple Watch first launched in 2015, it was more of a fashion accessory than a health and fitness device. There was also just one model which came in two sizes and that was that. The only decision you really had to make was whether you wanted the 38mm or 42mm variant and what pricey strap you were going to pair with it.

That's not the case anymore though. There are now not only three models to decide between, but they all offer a slightly different experience and at significantly different price points too. I wore all three for a week whilst working out to see whether you really need the top dog Watch Ultra 2 or whether the humble Watch SE does just fine. Here's what I learned.

If you're someone who enjoys (perhaps the wrong choice of word) high intensity interval training or HIIT as it is more commonly known then you'll probably have learned not all fitness devices are created equal and not all can track this form of exercise particularly well. The quick changes in heart rate mean that unless you have quite an advanced tracker on your wrist (chest straps are better here), you may notice a delay in it registering the peaks and troughs of your heart rate as you move through intervals.

Both the Apple Watch Series 9 and the Watch Ultra 2 are very fast to respond to these heart rate changes in my experience however likely thanks to a combination of the new S9 SiP and the third generation optical heart rate sensor they both offer. Meanwhile, the Watch SE was a little slower by a couple of seconds, but in HIIT, those seconds count. That's not to say the cheaper model isn't capable at tracking HIIT workouts as it most definitely is, but if you want a near enough instantaneous response to your heart rate changes, it's the Series 9 or Watch Ultra 2 you'll want.

Remember GymKit? It was a feature Apple launched way back in 2017 so it's certainly not new but it is hugely underrated, especially if you go to a gym with machines that support it. GymKit has been replaced by third party services in some cases though it's not entirely redundant and whether you use GymKit or a third party service, the premise is the same: you can easily connect your Apple Watch for better two-way metrics. I have a Peloton Bike+ at home and that model has GymKit, which is the reason I bought it over the standard Peloton Bike.

The best thing about GymKit and other third party services is that you don't need to have the Watch Series 9 or Watch Ultra 2 to use them. The Watch SE is also compatible so you can just tap your watch against compatible gym equipment (once set up) or something like the Peloton Bike+ and metrics like your heart rate plus distance and speed transfer between the machine and your watch. This gives you accurate calories burned and heart rate training zones for a better view of how much work you've actually done rather than an estimate.

There are certainly benefits to investing in the Apple Watch Series 9 or the Watch Ultra 2 especially in the case of more extreme sports. The Watch Ultra 2 has double the water resistance (100m) of the Watch Series 9 and the Watch SE for example, as well as being compliant for diving, but if you're just doing some laps at your local pool, all Apple Watch models track the same metrics. The same can be said for other workout types too. Whether it's an outdoor walk, an indoor run, a dance class or Pilates, the Watch SE, Watch Series 9 and Watch Ultra 2 all offer up the same interface, the same detail and the same stats.

Take something as simple as an outdoor walk for example, the Watch SE, Watch Series 9 and Watch Ultra 2 all offer up time, distance, active calories, elevation gain and heart rate. All three Apple Watch models have built-in GPS too and while the Watch Ultra 2 offers precision dual-frequency GPS (L1 and L5) for more accurate data compared to the Watch Series 9 and Watch SE, this doesn't matter for a walk around the block. If you're a hiker, or you like a bit of adventure then that's a slightly different story, but for most of us, the Watch SE will more than suffice.

While the Watch SE is more than capable at offering superb fitness tracking without the extra bells and whistles you may never use, there is one area where the Watch Series 9 and (especially) the Watch Ultra 2 are superior: outdoor workouts. Now I'm not talking about the sensors because as I mentioned, I got the same maps and same data from all three models whichever device I looked at. When the sun is shining though, the extra brightness on the Watch Series 9 is noticeable compared to the Watch SE. This is even truer for the Watch Ultra 2 that has triple the brightness of the Watch SE so if you are someone that loves an outdoor run or walk, you'll benefit from the Watch Series 9 or Watch Ultra 2 when that winter sun appears.

It's also worth mentioning that these models will be helpful when skiing or surfing too as while I didn't manage to get to the slopes or ride any waves with these three watches on, the reflection from the snow and water will mean a brighter display is beneficial. When it comes mountains, the Watch Ultra 2 also offers higher altitude support than the other models so that's worth keeping in mind too.

Yes, I am talking about training overall here but sleep should be part of your training because without it, you're not going to be able to do that run or cycle to the best of your ability. Learning how well (or not well) you've slept, can help achieve your fitness goals too so it's something that's worth keeping an eye on. As with standard fitness and workout tracking, the Watch SE is as capable as the Watch Series 9 and Watch Ultra 2 when it comes to sleep tracking. You get almost all the same data across all three models.

There are extra sensors on the Watch Series 9 and Watch Ultra 2 for tracking blood oxygen (how much oxygen your red blood cells carry around your body) and they also have a body temperature sensor for tracking ovulation in women, which can be helpful, but the main sleep data is there across all models. You can therefore see heart rate, time awake, time in light sleep, time in deep sleep, time in REM (dreaming) and respiratory rate no matter what Apple Watch you have.

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 and Watch Series 9 most certainly have their advantages, especially in the case of the Watch Ultra 2 with its larger display and extra elements, like dual-frequency GPS and 100m water resistance. What I learned from wearing all three for a week to train however, is that the Watch SE really is more than sufficient in pretty much every area when it comes to tracking exercise and workouts. Being able to monitor blood oxygen levels is useful if you are planning on climbing mountains for example, but for day-to-day, it's a nice to have metric and not a necessary one.

With the same software, same access to some excellent health and fitness third party apps and the ability to track the same metrics for most workouts, the Watch SE delivers everything most people need and more, with the Watch Series 9 and Watch Ultra 2 merely adding a cherry to an already great cake.

A new year brings renewed resolutions, and for many, physical fitness is top of mind.

Just continue to get better, whether its cardio or [getting] a little stronger, Ryan Kovarik, a member at Limitless Performance in Kitchener, said.

The gym has officially entered its busiest season, with 30 new members joining the facility this month alone.

This year its super busy, said owner Adam de Jong. Its not only new people coming in but its also our current members, long-term members that are super excited to set some new goals.

According to Forbes Health, nearly half of this years resolutions revolve around getting in better shape.

[People] want to be strong, they want to be healthy, they want to be fit, they want to eat healthy, they want to sleep well, de Jong told CTV News.

According to Andy Kovacs, a financial planner with Sunlife Financial, more of his clients are looking to protect the money they currently have rather than worry about making more.

Despite the direction that our institutions and our economy are headed, Canadians still want to be in financial control, Kovacs told CTV News.

He points at a volatile 2023 thats left many Canadians on edge.

People want to make sure that their families can be taken care of, their businesses, their communities, because weve got a lot of challenges, Kovacs added.

The third most prioritized resolution is making positive improvements to mental health, especially as we emerge from the pandemic.

Registered psychotherapist Josh Zettel, at CARESPACE Health+Wellness in Kitchener-Waterloo, said more people are drawing attention to their mental health issues, rather than bottling them up.

I think people are looking to experience the benefits of working on mental health, he said. I think people have also seen other people invest their energy and invest their time into developing mental skills and improving mental health so that it doesnt have as much of an impact.

For those looking to improve their mental health, Zettel suggests the following:

The survey shows most resolutions last two to three months before theyre given up on.

Experts say the best way to stick with your goals is to practice smart and healthy habits.

Really understand and connect with the values behind your goal, Zettel advised. Why is it important to you? Why do you want to fulfill it? Why do you want to achieve it?

It is a laudable objective to improve your health and fitness, especially at the start of a year, and there were many at Port Moresby Road Runners at Murray Barracks on Saturday afternoon who took the first step towards that goal for 2024.

Hagai Gideon got the year off to a cracking start in the 2.8km event, winning easily in 11 minutes and 39 seconds from Jim Alfred (12.06) and Philip solo (13.28).

Two of Buda Awowaris daughters, Natasha and Tanya were equal first females in 15.14.

Road running is for runners and walkers of all standards and amongst the walkers was the dynamic duo of Ajit Muttu and Simon Nutley who crossed the line together, equal 19th in 37.09. The late-starting Lionel Emmanuel (43.14) and Junior Mavia (42.43) completed the 22-strong field.

While his daughters were doing great things in the short race father Buda was busy winning the 5.6-km event in 30.41 from Yoba Mathew (34.36), Paul Sayer (36.15) and Soa Gor (37.36).

What is the term used for a person whose first name and second name starts with the same letter? Not sure, but we have to find out soon as there are plenty of them.

They dominated the second half of this field: Titus Tobia (41.28), Henry Horou (52.09), Jerry Jack (52.33) and Havae Harupa (53.18).

The long race took the runners right around the big block and here Swans Pinampio started the new year the same way he finished the old one, with a victory and a stylish one at that in 42.56. Hans Lambrecht and James Gurumi were equal second in 43.46, while Trent Scott made a welcome return in 46.31.

Josek Woka (53.02), John Ulelu (55.12) and Dominic Armbrust (59.23) were gallant in a gladiatorial finish to the days proceedings.

Next Saturday Road Runners will be back at UPNG Waigani for three events starting at 4.30pm. All are welcome.
