Consumers are creatures of habit but those habits can be complex, and can certainly vary according to such factors as geography, age and even fitness level. Businesses that can tap into those habits can often tap into a gold mine. However, it can be much harder than it seems, even for the smartest and most data-driven of entrepreneurs.
Thats the sense one gets after listening to Fritz Lanman, CEO at ClassPass. During a recent high-energy PYMNTS discussion with Karen Webster, Lanman talked about the value that ClassPass designed as a one-stop digital shop via which consumers can access gym classes and related programs brings to the modern health-and-wellness market, and the lessons the company has learned along the way, lessons that can be applied to other operators in the digital realm.
The appeal to an investor and entrepreneur like Lanman? For starters, the health-and-wellness trend keeps gaining steam, and there is little doubt that younger consumers will keep up that work. In addition, data and tech are at such a point that offering digital and mobile alternatives, and options for fitness-related classes, can be done in a seamless way a way that includes a seamless payments experience, too. Furthermore, consumers are always looking for variety, and for community something a digital operation like ClassPass can help build in almost a social-media-like way.
Indeed, those are some of the reasons that led Lanman to view ClassPass as worth his money and time and to become one of its Seed investors very early on. Not only that, but the nature of working out is changing for many consumers.
Our customers are coming in from the couch, or traditional gyms, or running, he told Webster. They are new to group work, which we think of as super-efficient for maintaining motivation and having that community element.
Habits And Sushi
Even the least fitness-inclined know that group work assuming the tone is positive can help anyone do that extra set of sit-ups, and thats the part of human nature that ClassPass is trying to tap. Simply put, ClassPass offers consumers who pay a set monthly fee to gain access to facilities operated by some 22,000 partners in about 2,500 cities around the world. Experiences covered under a pass can range widely, from yoga to boxing, weights, dance and beyond. ClassPass enables what it views as a seamless booking and paying experience online or via mobile devices, and helps its partners get rid of their excess inventory while, perhaps, gaining new customers. The company also offers workout videos that users can access via their mobile devices.
Throughout the ClassPass experience, habits are front and center. Our customer habituate is how Lanman described it to Webster. New ClassPass users tend to shop around for classes, programs and fitness experiences that suit them, then stick with what works.
Its kind of like a food delivery experience, he said. Once you find your sushi restaurant, you dont keep looking for sushi.
Of course, not everyone wants sushi every night (and one really shouldnt eat sushi every night in any case, lest they risk mercury or Sake poisoning) they might want pizza or other food to break the monotony. Thats where a service such as ClassPass can come in as well.
The discussion between Webster and Lanman happened as the company undergoes some significant expansion. Earlier this year, for instance,ClassPass announced its entry into the corporate wellness market, a launch aimed at appealing to consumers who get health-and-wellness benefits from employers, but who might find the choices of workout facilities and programs rather limited. The corporate wellness market, according to ClassPass, is pretty fragmented indeed, so is the rest of the fitness world, Lanman said, with perhaps 90 percent of gyms and studios owned by small, independent players and mom-and-pop operations.
That works in favor of ClassPass, which seeks to offer a single place where consumers can go to get seamless access to all those places. That helps those smaller operators, too. They get more chances to win over new customers, helping those gyms and studios expand their markets, and bring in new revenue.
Theres another part of the ClassPass proposition as well ratings, which can serve to make sure class instructors are given their best effort, lest they risk their future prosperity.
MoviePass Path
Thats not to say the ClassPass journey has been seamless, however. Lanman spoke with Webster about some of the hurdles the company has had to overcome, and some misfires. Among them? In the early days, when the area of focus was basically New York, the company offered via a promotion unlimited passes for users.
We quickly learned that was not a sustainable business model, Lanman said.
Like MoviePass, Webster offered, referring to the too-good-to-be true movie subscription service that just underwent a spectacular failure.
Customers loved it, but it was bad for us, Lanman added.
Plans now range from $9 per month, for four credits to book one class, to $159 per month, for 100 credits to book up to 37 classes. The failure of the unlimited passes, in fact, led ClassPass to its current credit model. Consumers can roll over those credits (up to 10 credits a month), with demand helping to determine the cost of a particular class or workout session via a dynamic pricing system.
However, as not all workouts succeed (how many of us have paid via back strain and other ways for lifting too much or running too hard?), not all business models do. Yet, successful athletes and devotees of fitness always find ways to bounce back, and thats certainly been the case with ClassPass.
Now, Lanman said, about half of the companys customers use the service to supplement their regular gyms or studios. The company still hasnt gotten the word out about itself to all members of its target demographics, though, he told Webster, work that continues. That said, the social- and community-building that ClassPass enables via its app it all goes back to human nature is significant in helping with company growth and word-of-mouth marketing, he said. The company also offers personalized class recommendations, along with rewards for bringing friends into the service.
Fitness and health are prime concerns for countless consumers around the world, especially younger ones approaching their peak earning years. One can count on more innovation and attempts at disruption in this space well into the 2020s.

Fitness Fridays: Lauren Moses Wouldnt Recommend Diet Pills And Flat Tummy Teas After They Left Her Underweight And Unhealthy – MadameNoire

Lauren Moses went to college, and like many people, let the freedom, and the stress, get the best of her. She turned to food for comfort, and before she knew it she gained close to 50 pounds.
Everything just went up, she said. My clothes sizes went up, I had a hard time going up the stairs. I had a hard time going down the stairs, walking up hills.
When she started trying to lose weight, she wanted a quick fix, so she guzzled slimming teas and took diet pills. While she did lose weight, she felt terrible, and she ended up being smaller than she even was in high school. The quick fix way of doing things took a toll on her.
I was trying to find anything. I was trying to find a slimming tea, a slimming pill, she said. I would go to CVS and whatever slimming thing I would find I would get. That didnt work? I would go to another thing. I was more obsessed with getting skinny and looking thin rather than getting myself together, getting myself healthy.
Eventually, she had an epiphany about her process, and realized that while skinny, she wasnt healthy at all. She got rid of all of the pills and teas and took charge of her health with old-fashioned clean eating and activity. The 25-year-old DMV native ended up packing on muscle while maintaining a lean yet curvy figure. As her way of looking at health and wellness grew, so did the people who followed her after she started tracking her journey and posting workout videos on Instagram.
I started out with 30 followers and then it just started to grow and then it started to grow really quickly, she said. I look back today, I think Im at 18.6 thousand.
Shes grateful these days for the positive messages that she gets, the results shes seen from the hard (but healthy) work shes put in and the feeling she has about herself now.
Honestly, when I do my videos its so fun to look at the comments and read the messages, and I didnt have that when I was using the teas or taking the pills, she said. I didnt have that happiness and satisfaction.

MadameNoire: Tell me how your fitness journey got started. It began in 2014, correct?
Lauren Moses: Yeah, so what happened was, I went off to college and you know people gain the freshman 15. I actually gained like freshman 50. I dont remember the exact number, but I went in 130-something pounds straight out of high school and I started eating. I was just stressed out and I was stress eating. I wasnt exercising and I found comfort in food. One day I took a picture of myself and I was just like, oh my gosh, I dont even recognize this person anymore.
When I started, I wanted a quick fix. I didnt want to exercise so I would go to the tummy teas or I would try and find a diet pill, some type of quick fix. It wasnt about the journey, I just wanted to get back to my skinny self, I guess. It took me a while to see that even though I was losing some weight, I was still having a hard time going up the stairs. I wasnt healthy, but physically I looked it. Mentally I wasnt. It had to take me putting the pills down, throwing the tea away and just getting my butt up at the crack of dawn, taking a run or taking a walk or running up and down the stairs. That motivated me to start my workout journey. Sometimes I would yo-yo. I would be all in and ready to be fit and then Id fall off the wagon and eat a little too much and think, why try again? It took really last year for me to finally stay motivated.
You said that you were doing the fad diets and overexercising and ended up being very, very small, but you werent happy with where you found yourself. Can you elaborate on that part of your journey?
At my lowest I went all the way down to 120. Even though I looked small, I felt terrible. I would drink excessive amounts of green tea. I would go to the gym for three hours a day and just do cardio. I was just tiring myself out and I never had energy. The diet pills left me bloated and exhausted. Even though I looked semi-good, on the outside I felt terrible. I felt worse than I did when I gained a whole bunch of weight. I also didnt feel accomplished. I just looked at myself in the mirror and thought, is this what it takes to look a certain way? There has to be a simpler way.
I threw everything away and for a time, it got harder because my body was so used to this certain method that I had to step away from. I started lifting weights and I started to run and feel accomplished. I think the sad part about the fitness world is that we promote losing weight and being skinny. We dont really talk about how we get there. I got there, I got skinny, but when I tell you I felt terrible? I felt exhausted all of the time and didnt want to do anything. Isnt the point of losing weight to be healthier? I was kind of defeating the purpose. Even though I was okay on the outside, it didnt really help me on the inside. I had this mindset of get skinny, get skinny, get skinny, but when does it become enough? Now my mindset is get fit, try this new exercise. I set goals for myself, short and long term. Before, my whole goal was just to get skinny. I try to preach against that now. I tell people to not make it a destination, but a journey. I try to preach that its not about getting skinny, its about being your own body goals.
So would you say the teas and pills people promote are dangerous based on your experience or is just that people who want a quick fix are using these tools wrong?
I think its a couple of things. I think there are people who are like how I was. They want a quick fix. So we see a tea, we see the words fat loss and we just automatically think, if I drink this Ill get skinny. Im sure there are teas that will help promote weight loss and waist trainers that will help, but I feel like it becomes dangerous when we start using the terminology of this and just this. Like if you use this waist trainer, you will be small again. Your whole waist will shrink. If you drink this tea you will drop the pounds. I dont see it as much anymore but I used to see it when I was taking those teas. It would just be like, take these teas and youre good to go. You dont hear any mention of clean eating or exercise. Thats when it gets dangerous. Here you have these people not changing their eating habits or exercise habits and they believe if they drink this tea or wear this waist trainer, they can still go on with the bad habits they have and look like someone else. Also, people resort to surgery, which is fine, but they dont disclose how they got their body. Promote whatever you want but be authentic. As fitness influencers, its important for us to be transparent and authentic because we have followers who are going to take everything we say seriously. Thats how people end up wearing this waist trainer thinking, why havent I lost these inches on my waist? Or youre taking these pills like I was and thinking, why arent I losing this weight? Why do I feel terrible? I just try to combat that. I try my best not to promote the teas or the pills because I know the secret to my weight-loss goal is clean eating and exercising.
Can you speak on the importance of embracing the things about your body that you cant change that are based on genetics? I know you initially struggled to accept your thighs.
I went to a doctor years ago and she told me my thighs would never be slim, or as slim as people would want them to be. They might be smaller, but I would forever have this shape. I feel like thats an important trait and I try to be transparent when people ask me how to get their thighs big. I had to let them know that genetically, Im a very curvy person. Even when I was heavier, I still had my curves. I think thats important because I dont want to say, To get my thighs, do this. Its just not going to happen. I do exercise my legs and do as much as I can but Im just always going to be curvy. So what I typically did was embrace self-love and be transparent about the fact that I used to hate them. I used to think they were too big and growing up it was all about being slim and I didnt fit in that category. It was a journey to self-love and understanding I could do as many squats and leg extensions as I wanted but my thighs are going to have more meat on them. Its just how it is. Its about embracing what you can do and what you have rather than looking at the next person and being sad that your body doesnt like look that. Thats just being honest with yourself when it comes to your fitness goals because sometimes people have these unrealistic goals, they dont meet them and then they beat themselves up about it. You have to be honest with yourself. I embrace it.
Whats been the key to maintaining your curves while attempting to lean out? You have done a great job with that.
One of the things I say is that it seems that people will either do cardio or strength training. I incorporate both. Its also important to not eat over my calories. The total amount of calories I allow myself a day is 1200, which is normal for my body. If I go off and do 1500, I will go to the gym and burn 300 so I can maintain. Or what I used to do was I would go to the gym and do 400 calories so I would be in a deficit with my calories. When youre in a deficit, youre going to lose weight. So thats how I was able to lose it was complete cardio. When I started my journey, I was doing cardio every day, and I was starting to lose my glutes. They became smaller, I didnt have any muscles and I had all this loose skin. After I did research, I realized I needed to do weight training get the toning going. I started doing both: 30 minutes of cardio and 30 minutes of strength training. Thats when I was able to see my glutes firm up and muscles in arm. I tell people all of the time that you have to combine them. You cant build muscle with cardio. Even with all the cardio, you cant build abs. Cardio is meant to slim down and boost metabolism but youre not going to build up any strength or muscle. Thats what strength training is for. Ive been able to do both and theyve helped me maintain my figure.
How has your diet helped you slim down? What are you eating these days?
I will be completely honest. I had a hard time figuring out before what my diet was going to be. I tried keto. I tried being completely strict. I tried Atkins. I tried all of that stuff and what I had to realize is that this cant be a diet, this has to be my lifestyle. I cant just do keto for a week and then go back to what I want. Ive tried that before. I did keto for a week, it was a little too strict for me. The next week I went to town on bread and gained all the weight back. What works for me is low carb. I will make alternative food. Instead of using regular flour for my flour Ill use almond flour. Instead of using sugar I would use Splenda. I would train myself to prefer those types of foods. There is a low-carb bread I have or I would use a wrap. That typically works for me because Id find that when I would eat regular bread I would bloat easier or it would be so hard to get rid of. Its just bad for me. Thats why I teeter-totter when people ask me about my diet, because what works for me may not necessarily work for another person. But for about seven months now its been low carb and low carb has worked for me. This is something I plan to do for the rest of my life. When I go out to eat I might tell them to hold the bread or I might get more meat and veggies on my plate and I will get healthier carbs like brown rice or sweet potatoes. I try to stay away from white rice and white bread. Ive tried my best to do that and its been working. Now, that doesnt mean that if Im at a kids birthday party I wont take a piece of cake. That might happen, but I try not to beat myself up about it. There may be times where you indulge when you dont need to but that just means the next day you dust yourself off and try it again. A lot of people, including me, have struggled with that because we go off of our diet and we beat ourselves up and then were like, whats the point? But you have to have that mental strength to say, maybe I shouldnt have had that extra pizza, but guess what? I did and Im going to move on and try harder the next day. Im not good at just completely alienating food and I dont really believe in that because when you do that, its difficult. I believe in replacing rather than completely removing my favorite foods, which is chocolate [laughs].
What is the advice you would give to people who are trying their best but are feeling dejected and ready to throw in the towel on their weight-loss and fitness journey?
You have to be your number one supporter. You can not look for when you lost a pound for other people to notice. You are putting all of your happiness in what that person says. If your friend told you that they lost a pound, would you say, Oh, whatever, or would you say, Im proud of you? So why is it when we lose a pound were just like, I guess. I was expecting more. Whatever. You have to try to push yourself and its so hard because the scale will go up and down and you will fall when it comes to your diet sometimes, but you have to be your own cheerleader. As soon as you start thinking those negative thoughts of why am I doing this? I cant stay fit to save my life. When that happens, the negative thoughts start increasing to the point that you dont want to do it anymore. You have to support yourself. You have to stay motivated. I would not be where I am today if I did not support myself. You have to be positive and thats with whatever you want in this world. You have to be your own best friend. There are already people looking to tear you down, why would you add to it?

SPOKANE, Wash. - Staying active as the temperatures get cooler can get difficult, so here is an option where you can get your workout in and stay warm.
Empire Fitness is one of Spokane's newest gyms located in Logan Neighborhood, near Gonzaga University.
The fitness center offers a range of classes from yoga, to running club. Treadmill classes will also be added soon to their schedules. During the summer, the gym offers rooftop yoga.
Empire's signature workout, is known as "EMP." This is a one-hour, high-intensity strength and conditioning workout. The workout changes each day. These classes typically involve free weights, TRX, or even ski erg machines.
Beyond the gym, they also offer childcare.
They've partnered with Wellness Tree to open an in-house juice bar, which is expected to open in January 2020. Wellness Tree is a health bar in Spokane's Perry District, serving smoothies and smoothie bowls, as well as coffee and teas.
If you're interested in trying out Empire, they do offer your first class for free, so you can try it out before spending money.
The gym has a special offer going for Gonzaga's Fall Family Weekend. If you're a Gonzaga student, you and your family can take any of Empire's classes for free during Fall Family Weekend. They're also holding Wellness Weekend happening Saturday, where you can get massages, and get coffee and treats at Forza.

I met with two wonderful schoolteachers last week. They came into my gym to try us out and see if we could help them with their health and fitness goals.
If you know a schoolteacher, youll know that they are selfless and dont do it for the money. They sacrifice their most valuable commodity, their own time, to help the ones who are responsible for the future of our country the kids.
They finally made the decision to take a slice of this time they selflessly have given up for their students to take care of themselves. One teacher explained that she had overcome breast cancer and a number of other ailments. Despite the hardship, she was ready to give herself the time she so desperately deserved the time that her body so desperately needed. It was time for her!
They normally would stay after school and prep for the next day. Although not on the clock or getting paid, when the bell rung for dismissal, the bell was also signaling for them to keep working, but not get paid. Schoolteachers already make way less then they deserve, but add the extra time they spend not getting paid, and many make less than a fast food clerk per hour.
We are all given the same number of seconds in the day 86,400. We are given the same 1,440 minutes in a 24-hour period. Some conquer their goals and achieve billionaire status like Bill Gates, others squander it with wasted YouTube time, social media and video games. They squander it in a make-believe world that is indifferent or even glad you did!
My challenge this week is to consider the seconds you are given, the minutes you are blessed with, and the opportunities you are bestowed to be better.
You deserve the time. You deserve the time to work on your body, your health, your level of stress, your appearance. Discipline yourself to be a physical being.

A KILTED fitness duo reckon exercise is vital to improving mental health not just keeping us in shape physically.
Stephen Clarke and Rab Shields made a name for themselves by donning Scotlands traditional dress in cheeky fitness videos watched by millions on Facebook and YouTube.

The Perth-based personal training duo, known as The Kilted Coaches, are also backing The Scottish Suns Mind The Future campaign, which aims to tackle the nations spiralling childhood
mental health crisis with three key aims.
And they are adamant that working out can benefit the minds of kids and adults alike, with one of their clients even coming off anti-depressants after training with them.
Stephen, 36, says: One of the main problems with the fitness industry and the social media aspect of it is that people are put off because it looks unachievable.
It looks like you have to drink kale smoothes all the time, train seven days a week, lift heavy weights and run marathons.

But something as simple as walking more or gentle jogging can have positive effects on happiness and feelings of positivity and well-being.
He adds: We have found that the best way to reach people is to make them laugh and smile without any threatening messages.
If we can just make a video that makes someone smile and then their brain opens up to the possibility of making more positive change, thats good enough for us.
Our message is that anything is better than nothing. It doesnt matter where you are starting from as long as youre doing a couple of steps beyond what you normally do.
If we can inspire someone to say fitness isnt as scary as they thought it was, Id say weve done a pretty good job.
As Scotlands most-famous fitness duo, The Kilted Coaches film their videos shirtless and in the great outdoors.
While they know its an unsual method, they reckon its helped them reach millions of people they would have otherwise missed.

Rab, 35, says: We have been friends since we were 13 years old but came together in 2015 with the message of health and happiness rather than health and fitness. Our branding initially was
terrible, we were trying to be clever with marketing, didnt have the kilts on and were trying to be the fitness guys with a softer message than most.
If you want to be known globally theres no way getting away from our Scottish accent and one of our main messages is to be yourself.
Being the Scottish fitness guys, we put our kilts on and do things in and around Scotland so when they think of Scotland they think of us.
But they are also keen to promote opening up about mental health.
The duo have already made several videos describing their own battles.
Stephen admits: Ive suffered with anxiety in the past. Those videos were really well-received and I love the fact we can associate with it, we will do anything we can to help that.
For everyone who has been outspoken about their mental health, there are probably 1,000 others keeping it bottled up and not talking about it.

"We work with a friend of ours who is a doctor of psychology and, through conversations, we realised feeling anxious is a normal emotion, its nothing you should be ashamed of.
Even feeling depressed for a while is normal its only when it stays with you and is not dealt with that it can be a problem.
