Hays Medical Center employees will kick off a new 10-day fitness initiative Monday.

The initiative is intended to promote the hospital's Exercise is Medicine program, which encourages staff and patients to exercise regularly.

"We just want them to be aware of the whole initiative," said Stephanie Schaffer, director of the Center for Health Improvement. "We've got to keep encouraging physicians and nurses to make sure we're talking about exercise."

A hospital-wide goal for the program is to get 250 associates to complete a free 30-minute fitness consult by the end of the 2013 fiscal year.

The EIM program encourages patients and staff to exercise for at least 30 minutes three times a week.

Qualifying patients also can receive a free fitness consult when recommended by a physician.

The following activities are included in the 10-day employee initiative.

Fitness classes draw dozens downtown

SOUTH BEND -- In an effort to draw people downtown and contribute to the overall health of the community, Downtown South Bend Inc. hosted two free fitness classes Saturday on the plaza in front of the Morris Performing Arts Center.

The morning began with an hourlong yoga class at 8 a.m., followed by Zumba at 9. About 50 people attended each of the classes led by local fitness instructors.

"It was great," said South Bend resident Sara Cavadini, who participated in yoga. "It was really nice to see so many different people, and it was nice to be outside in the morning when the weather is nice."

"I really enjoyed it," said Karen Kruz of South Bend, who attended the yoga class with her daughter and her mother, Amy Nuner. "We were just talking about coming back next week."

"I really like the waterfall right here," Nuner added, referring to the fountain outside the Morris.

Kruz said she planned to explore downtown a bit afterward and maybe grab some breakfast, which is no doubt what DTSB had in mind when it decided to offer the classes.

Downtown South Bend plans to host more free classes on the plaza, including cardio dance and jazzercise classes, every Saturday between now and Aug. 11. The classes will be led by local instructors representing a number of area fitness centers.

"I am very excited that we have a beautiful venue in downtown South Bend to exercise outdoors together," volunteer event coordinator Judy Wein said, making a point to thank DTSB as well as area health clubs and fitness instructors.

Wein wasn't the only one excited.

"I thought it was a great idea," Mishawaka resident Pam Guild said while waiting with her daughter and grandson for the Zumba class to start. "I read about it (in the paper) and I was real impressed. I think Downtown South Bend has done a lot to bring people downtown."

B&G Club Health Fair Focuses on Kids' Fitness

July 13, 2012

Kids at the Boys & Girls Club in Charlottesville spent the day learning about healthy eating and healthy lifestyles.

The 10th-annual health fair is sponsored by the University of Virginia Medical Center. A number of faculty, residents and staff took part to show the kids healthy habits.

Kids took part in a number of activities from running to CPR training and even a Zumba class.

UVa. also offered physicals for any high school students participating in sports.

"Children learn a little bit about health and nutrition in school and they learn some at home, but the more knowledge they have and learn as a child, the healthier adult they'll be," said Nancy McDaniel, a pediatrician at UVa.

The health fair is part of UVa.'s continuing efforts to make an impact in the community.

"Over the years I've been doing it, I've noticed these kids, they look healthier," McDaniel said. "They're slimmer, they're more active and it is just good for them to be able to make their own decisions about activity and food."

More than 200 children took part in the Boys & Girls Club's health fair.

Livingston Co. Health Center to offer weight loss and wellness Program

Posted: at 12:14 am

without comments

Open registration begins this week for Livingston County Health Centers 10 week Weight Loss and Wellness program for adults who would like to get educated about improving their level of health and lose a few pounds along the way.

The Weight Loss and Wellness program focuses on two of the more important aspects of a healthy lifestyle: nutrition and activity. Its not a diet but rather a comprehensive program that emphasizes a healthy lifestyle approach to weight management by integrating fitness, nutrition and the behavioral aspects of eating. Through this program, participants will experience an enhancement of their quality of life.

Each participant completes a Health Survey, Wellness Screening and receives an individual consultation, after which, educational support will be offered for a ten week session, beginning Aug. 15th.

The Wellness Screening component of the program includes a heart health screen including measurement of blood pressure, cholesterol, lipids and glucose and body mass index to determine risk for heart disease. Participants meet individually with a health center RN to review screening results and set individual goals for improvement. Each week, participants weigh in and educational classes are held every other week.

The goal for the participants completing the program is to lose 2 percent of their body weight by the end of the program and/or have established a regular activity/exercise routine of three times a week for at least 30 minutes a day. The program will continue to follow up on participants, offering a subsequent wellness screening and evaluation of continued progress after the program ends.

Basic blood work is done before beginning the program. If you would like to receive a complete panel, attend the July 25th Adult Blood Draw Clinic at the health center, from 7 to 10 a.m. If youve had blood work done in the last 6 months, simply bring a copy of those results to put on file. Those interested in being a part of the August session should call 646-5506 to set up an appointment with Program Coordinator Anita Perry, RN or come by the health center office at 800 Adam Drive to register. Registration is limited.

Please check with your doctor before significantly changing your diet or starting a new exercise regimen.

Cancer Health Home>>Cancer>>Health news Written by: Cary Castagna, QMI Agency Jul. 13, 2012 Tosca Reno, left, does weights with trainer Rita Catolino, a resident of London, Ont., and certified personal trainer with GoodLife Fitness.(Kelsey-Lynn Corradetti photo) Click here for images of Tosca Reno.

Tosca Reno figures the best way to honour her late husband -- fitness guru and publishing magnate Robert Kennedy -- is to get her butt back in the gym and "re-enter the world of physique competition."

So that's what she's doing.

"I don't know if there's a right and wrong way to grieve," Reno, 53, says in a candid phone interview with Sun Media. "This feels right for me."

The well-known Canadian swimsuit model and New York Times bestselling author let her own health fall by the wayside during her husband's illness earlier this year.

"No one saw that coming," Reno says. "And it accelerated very, very quickly."

The man credited with coining the term "hardcore bodybuilding" suffered a stroke Jan. 29.

"He recovered from that," Reno recalls. "But at that time, we learned there were metastatic tumours in his brain that basically involved his entire brain and it wasn't very long for him."

Kennedy died April 12 at the family home in Caledon Hills, north of Toronto. He was 73.

Reno admits she has yet to come to terms with his death.
