DENVER, July 25, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --In the neighborhoods of west Denver, many residents, particularly the elderly, suffer from nutrition-related illnesses, like high rates of diabetes and heart disease. The problem is compounded by lack of access to adequate nutrition education and grocery stores that offer good selections of fresh, healthy food.

Today ARAMARK, the global professional services company, will create an ARAMARK Building Community Opportunity Zonethat will be a hub for ongoing nutrition and wellness programs at Southwest Improvement Council (SWIC), which provides health and human services programs, affordable housing, meals for senior citizens and other services to underserved neighborhoods of west Denver. In partnership with the SWIC, the company will also launch a series of health and wellness workshops to help combat health issues facing many local residents

"Obesity, diabetes and other chronic diseases are major issues in our community, especially for the elderly. In fact, more than 15 percent of Coloradans over 65 suffer from diabetes," said Jan Marie Belle, SWIC's executive director. "People in this area often have a difficult time finding nutritious food. Our partnership with ARAMARK, and the work they are doing here today to create a place for our families to focus on health and nutrition, will be key to overcoming barriers to healthy lifestyles."

This effort is part of ARAMARK Building Community (ABC), the company's global volunteer and philanthropic program focused on strengthening local community centers and helping struggling families in 50 cities in the U.S. and abroad. Through ABC, employees use their culinary, hospitality, food and nutrition, facilities management and human resources expertise to create strong and vital communities.

"The mission of ARAMARK Building Community is to put our skills to work to improve neighborhoods by working with local community centers to enhance their capacity and programs. Our culinary and nutrition experts help people achieve healthier lifestyles that are essential to leading happy, productive lives," said Carl Mittleman, Regional Vice President for ARAMARK Sports and Entertainment. "Through our partnership with SWIC, we've been helping people succeed and neighborhoods thrive."

The ABC Opportunity Zone will include a new community health garden, created by the participating ARAMARK volunteers, to help senior citizens who are in need of access to fresh, healthy foods. The garden will supplement the center's existing food pantry and be available to the dozens of seniors who visit the center each day, including those who rely on the center for their daily lunch. In addition, an unused outdoor area will be transformed into a welcoming outdoor classroom, and will serve as a dedicated space for local residents to learn about nutrition and healthy and active lifestyles.

ARAMARK volunteers also donated healthy food items such as canned fruits and vegetables and whole-grain cereals for SWIC's food pantry, and a variety of gardening tools for the center's senior citizens to use in the new community garden.

Throughout the year, ARAMARK culinary and nutrition experts will host wellness educational classes for residents to help them understand health issues and identify solutions such as workshops on "Diabetes and Your Health," and "Shopping for Health." Classes will include healthy cooking demonstrations and nutritional information at the annual health and wellness day.

About Southwest Improvement Council (SWIC) Southwest Improvement Council is a nonprofit charity formed in 1987 by the residents of Westwood, an impoverished neighborhood in urban southwest Denver. SWIC's purpose is to improve living conditions for its residents through civic engagement, health and human service programs, and affordable housing, by identifying and building on the assets of the people in the community. SWIC's first projects included neighborhood cleanups, home repairs for seniors, and after-school education programs for children. Today SWIC provides housing counseling, meals and food for seniors, exercise and fitness programs, health and disease-prevention programs, afterschool programs for youth, evening recreation and gang-diversion programs, an urban wildlife refuge and 19 units of affordable multi-family housing. SWIC serves more than 3,000 people each year. Visit http://www.SWIC.denver.org for more information.

Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan takes his health seriously. Khans daily fitness routine starts early5 am. He begins with 20 minutes of stretching and then exercises for an hour on his Bowflex Revolution Machinea system that mimics traditional weights through the use of various discs with built-in tension coils. Khan also incorporates dumbbells into his workout, because Im getting old, he said.

Although there is a gym both at the Parliament and the Ministry of Health, Khan says he prefers to workout on his own. Hes even thinking of resuming karate in the near future. On August 12, the minister will host an event organised by the Fight

the Fat Campaign at the Queens Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain, to encourage people to follow his example, get active, eat healthy diets and lead more fulfilling lives. The event, part of a campaign launched by the ministry in November 2011, is open to the public and is free.

Michelle Obama says Olympics can promote health and fitness

Posted: at 5:14 pm

(CBS News) First Lady Michelle Obama is preparing to lead the presidential delegation at the kick-off of the 2012 Olympic Games Friday and, she said, this is an opportunity to encourage kids to improve their health and fitness.

"Leading our nation's delegation and traveling to London is truly a dream come true," Obama said on a conference call with reporters Monday. "Some of my fondest memories when I was young and not so young involved watching the Olympics on TV and cheering on Team USA."

Obama will lead a delegation that includes past U.S. Olympians such as Brandi Chastain, Dominique Dawes, Grant Hill and Summer Sanders.

The first lady, who has made fighting childhood obesity a priority with her "Let's Move" initiative, said the games are an opportunity to promote health and fitness.

"I decided I wanted to turn that Olympic spirit and inspiration into action by using these games as a way to get more kids up and moving."

Obama said she is excited to host a "Let's Move!" event for 1,000 American military children and American and British students Friday. The event, co-sponsored by the State Department and by Nickelodeon, will include sports stations, entertainment and appearances by Olympic and Paralympic legends.

She also declared July 28 "Let's Move! Olympic Fun Day," encouraging children and communities to cheer on Team USA and participate in athletic events across the country. At least 200 communities have signed up, and the number is expected to grow throughout the week.

While in London, in addition to her fitness campaign, Obama will also attend a reception for heads of state and hold a private meeting with Samantha Cameron, the wife of British Prime Minister David Cameron.

Deputy National Security Adviser for Strategic Communications Ben Rhodes said the trip is an important way for the first lady to continue building the special relationship between the U.S. and the U.K.

"While this visit is about the Olympics, its also about advancing the close ties between the U.S. and the United Kingdom," Rhodes said.

Wired cashes in on health tech boom with new conference, online vertical

Posted: at 5:14 pm

without comments

Capitalizing on the soaring interest in all things health tech, Wired magazine plans to host its first conference on digital health this fall and launch an online content vertical.

In an announcement Monday, the Cond Nast title said it was partnering with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation for a conference on the intersection of health, technology and science, and the future of healthcare. The Living by Numbers event will be in the same vein as Wireds 4-year-old Wired Business Conference, and comes as investments and innovation in the sector continue to rise.

Earlier this month, we reported that, according to a recent study from digital health startup accelerator Rock Health, investments in health tech are up 73 percent over the same time last year. In the past year, the Quantified Self movement has also gained momentum, as consumers turn to fitness- and health-tracking devices, such as the Nike Fuel Band and the FitBit, to track their steps, calories burned and other physical activity.

There are new opportunities to share data and collect data and analyze it, said Brian Quinn, a senior program officer at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. We see this data as a tool for helping us achieve [better health].

In addition to the conference, Wired said it will launch a new health-focused vertical on Wired.com to give the titles health tech coverage a dedicated destination. A Wired spokesman said the site is in the midst of a redesign and plans to launch the health vertical close to the conference. As readers migrate away from traditional platforms, the new vertical and conference gives Wired alternative ways to earn revenue.

Some of the conference speakers include Craig Venter, founder and president of the J. Craig Venter Institute in Rockville, Md. and leader of a team that mapped the human genome; world record holder Ashton Eaton, who will represent the U.S. at the 2012 Summer Olympics; Stephen Wolfram, CEO and founder of Wolfram Research; and Timothy Ferriss, author of The 4-Hour Workweek and The 4-Hour Body.

Press Release

T2 FOUNDATION/U.S. SKI TEAM ATHLETES ANDY NEWELL AND JESSIE DIGGINSTALK SKIING, FITNESS AND OLYMPICS WITH YMCA SUMMER CAMP KIDS IN BROOKLYN

Brooklyn, New York As the world gears for the summer Olympic games in London, T2 Foundation and U.S. Ski Team members Jessie Diggins and Andy Newell met with YMCA campers to talk about what it takes to be a world-class athlete, the importance of fitness and the meaning of team spirit, while introducing kids to cross-country skiing.

The event was organized by the T2 Foundation, a non-profit committed to supporting elite athletes and inspiring youth, SIA, the trade association for snow sports, which is interested in promoting all aspects of cross-country skiing and the YMCA, which is committed to nurturing the potential of kids, promoting healthy living and fostering a sense of social responsibility.

Over 140 campers age 7-12 took part in the event.

Before learning a series of exercises Jessie and Andy use in their everyday training, like critter crawls and various types of bounding with ski poles, the group gathered for a talk about being a World Cup athlete and Olympian. They watched a video of the athletes racing this winter and they got a show and tell of cross-country equipment. The crowd went wild when Andy strapped on his roller skis and raced around the indoor track.

Go around the track, go around the track! they chanted.

The event was a total success. The kids loved meeting Andy and Jessie and having the chance to interact with them. Hopefully, the kids will be inspired and carry the experience with them, Marina Knight, Director of the T2 Foundation said.

BY The Associated Press

NEVADA The western Missouri city of Nevada is embarking on a health care initiative which organizers hope could become a model for communities around the nation.

The goal is to improve both the health of the residents and the quality of health care they receive.

The Kansas City-based health care technology company Cerner is teaming up with local officials on the initiative. The city's hospital will spend $10 million on an electronic medical records system that will allow information to be shared with the town's two dozen doctors and medical experts in bigger cities.

Nevada's city government may build bike lanes and sidewalks to encourage exercise. An educational campaign will promote better nutrition and health screenings. Residents will alsocompete in fitness challenges like walking and weight-loss contests.
