Texas 4-H Youth and UnitedHealthcare Launch Partnership at "Back to School-Back to Health" Event in Houston to Promote …

HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Texas 4-H through Prairie View A&M Universitys Cooperative Extension Program and UnitedHealthcare announced a new partnership to promote healthy living and empower youth to help fight the nations obesity epidemic.
The partnership, called Eat4-Health, is activating thousands of 4-H youth ambassadors to make healthy choices for themselves and encourage friends, families and people in their communities to make positive changes through training, creative programs and educational events. It currently spans 10 states, including Texas.
At the partnership launch in Houston, more than 500 4-H youth, families and community leaders from Harris County came together for a Back to School-Back to Health event to promote health, fitness and healthy living. UnitedHealthcares mascot Dr. Health E. Hound was on hand to lead participants in healthy exercises and participate in gardening activities. Representatives from UnitedHealthcare presented a $30,000 check to Prairie View A&M University officials and 4-H youth to launch the program.
The event took place at The Last Organic Outpost, a Houston area community garden, and featured hands-on gardening demonstrations, healthy-cooking classes and educational presentations by 4-H members on making healthy food choices. Exercise activities included Zumba and swing out dancing classes, a fitness challenge, and swing out dancing routines that encouraged attendees to participate in simple, fun group activities designed to burn calories and promote health. Participating families received bags of fresh produce donated by the Houston Food Bank and Target Hunger.
Establishing healthy habits is a step toward healthy lifestyles, Texas Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples said. Private-sector partnerships like Eat4-Health are great examples of how we can help reverse the escalating trend toward obesity and the costly effect it is having on our nation. I commend the Eat4-Health partnership for empowering our youth to make healthy living a priority. This project complements my initiative, the 3Es of Healthy Living Education, Exercise and Eating Right which calls on parents and children to adopt healthy eating choices and lifestyle habits. These positive initiatives benefit our personal health as well as our states economic health.
Eat4-Health builds on UnitedHealthcares successful partnership with National 4-H Council that began last year in Florida, Mississippi and Texas. The campaign is expanding to Arizona, Louisiana, Nebraska, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Tennessee. Each participating state 4-H organization is receiving a $30,000 grant funded by UnitedHealthcare to support healthy-living programs, events and other activities administered by 4-H that encourage young people and their families to eat more nutritious foods and exercise regularly. The partnership in Texas is being administered through the Prairie View A&M University Cooperative Extension Program.
Prairie View A&M University is proud to partner with UnitedHealthcare again this year to promote healthy living among 4-H youth and their families, said Dr. Alton B. Johnson, Associate Dean of the College of Agriculture and Human Sciences at Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) and Administrator of the Cooperative Extension Program. We are excited to continue this important work together and use this grant to support 4-H programs that help educate communities about these important messages. Todays event is a perfect example of how we can make a positive impact.
We are fortunate to once again work together with 4-Hers here in Texas to help make a difference in the lives of so many families in the state, said Norine Yukon, CEO of UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Texas. UnitedHealthcare and 4-H look forward to continuing this partnership that is harnessing the energy and excitement of 4-H youth to promote healthy living.
Participating 4-H state programs receiving a grant are developing action plans that provide innovative, hands-on learning approaches that target specific community needs in their state. Many of these activities will support healthy-living programs led by 4-H that encourage youth and community participation through events such as health fairs, cooking demonstrations, after-school programs, workshops and educational forums, among others. UnitedHealthcare employees will team up with 4-H at many of these events, assisting with planning and executing projects that lead to positive, sustainable change at the community and individual level.

If Texas Bans Planned Parenthood, The Fallout May Be Huge
Posted: at 11:19 pm
They say things are bigger in Texas, and apparently its true. The state may suffer a whopping $6 million loss if Planned Parenthood clinics are no longer part of the Womens Health Program, and tens of thousands of women could be without care.
Thats the word from a George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services report that analyzed the fallout from a Republican-led plan to kick Planned Parenthood out of the states Womens Health Program. The program, a family planning and health system that started in 2005, is run under a waiver from Medicaid and serves about 100,000-plus low-income women.
In a broader perspective, its a little sad to me that not very long ago, there had been a political compromise about family planning a birth control services, with conservatives and liberals agreeing that it was a good thing to help women take control of their reproductive choices and also decrease the need for abortions, Leighton Lu, director of the schools Center for Health Policy Research told TakePart.

Within the year that social contract has appeared to unravel, and there have been stronger attacks on family planning and birth control. I thought this was something everyone could agree on.
The Womens Health Program offers birth control and basic screenings for illnesses such as diabetes and cancer. It has always excluded institutions that offer abortions, and the Planned Parenthood clinics that were part of the program didnt provide them, so they were allowed in.
But according to the Austin American-Statesman, in February of this year state officials made a new rule saying that healthcare providers that were even associated with organizations that provided or promoted abortions were to be excluded.
Medicare and Medicaid decided this wasnt in line with existing laws that allowed women to choose their own healthcare providers, so they yanked the funding, which constituted 90 percent of the budget for the Womens Health Program with them.

The state said it would continue backing the program with state money. However, two lawsuits ensued: Texas is suing the federal government, and a number of Planned Parenthood affiliates are suing the state of Texas.

Joe Cirulli, founder and CEO of Gainesville Health & Fitness Center, received a lifetime achievement award Thursday from Club Industry magazine during the Club Industry Conference and Exposition in Las Vegas.
In announcing the award, Club Industry noted that Cirulli opened his first club with three employees in a 1,500-square-foot space above a bank and today has three locations with 400 employees and 28,000 members.
Joe Cirulli is one of the biggest success stories in our industry, Pamela Kufahl, editor-in-chief, said in a news release. And despite becoming successful in this industry, he continues to hold true to his mission of helping to make his community of Gainesville one of the healthiest cities in America. He has not felt the need to franchise his concept and expand beyond his community, but he welcomes club operators from other communities into his club to share his expertise with them. That desire to serve his community and to serve the fitness industry makes him the perfect choice for our award this year.
The Wellness Councils of America gave Gainesville a Gold Well City USA Award in 2003 after GHFC teamed with Shands and the Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce to recruit businesses to participate in health and wellness efforts.
Cirulli is the 10th recipient of the award, joining such past winners as television fitness guru Jack LaLanne, Golds Gym and World Gym founder Joe Gold and Jazzercise founder Judi Sheppard Missett.

Valencell Partners With Contract Manufacturer Samsin to Accelerate Licensees' Time to Market
Posted: at 7:26 am
RALEIGH, NC--(Marketwire - Oct 11, 2012) - Valencell, an innovator in mobile health and fitness technology, today announced a partnership with Samsin, Innotec Co., Ltd., a Korea-based leading headset contract manufacturer for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Samsin is now an approved contract manufacturer of earbuds powered by PerformTek sensor technology.
This relationship enables licensees of Valencell's patented sensor technology to use Samsin as their contract manufacturer and accelerate their time to market. Samsin will help Valencell's licensees design, develop, test and manufacture their products.
Valencell executives will demonstrate PerformTek Precision Biometrics during the Hong Kong Electronics Fair in Samsin's booth #5B-F24. The Electronics Fair runs October 13-16 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center.
PerformTek Precision Biometrics captures accurate health/fitness data -- such as heart rate, speed, distance, pace, cadence, calories burned and VO2 max (aerobic fitness) and uses these metrics to provide meaningful fitness assessments. The technology seamlessly integrates into audio earbuds and smartphone apps people are already using while exercising. PerformTek continuously measures more real-time biometric and physiological data than any other fitness monitors with high accuracy and consistency.
"The industry has been waiting for a way to seamlessly measure fitness and performance metrics through devices people already wear during exercise. This new partnership with Samsin Innotech will accelerate the time-to-market for PerformTek licensees," said Dr. Steven LeBoeuf, co-founder and CEO of Valencell.
Samsin, the first headset manufacturing company in South Korea, makes products for many brand name OEMs. The company has a long history in the industry and is experienced with both Bluetooth and wired technology. Recently Samsin developed Valencell's own prototypes.
"For nearly 40 years we've provided headset contract manufacturing solutions for companies worldwide. Valencell has developed a breakthrough technology in this industry and we're pleased to be the approved and preferred CM for PerformTek Precision Biometrics," said S.K. Kim, CEO of Samsin, Innotec Co., Ltd.
In addition to earbuds, other form factors that utilize PerformTek Precision Biometrics, such as arm bands and wrist devices, are on the horizon. Attendees at the Electronics Fair interested in learning more about licensing Valencell's technology should contact info@valencell.com.
The Hong Kong Electronics Fair attracts attendees from around the globe and presents various electronics products and services, such as audio-visual products, navigation systems, telecommunications products and testing, inspection and certification services.
About Valencell Founded in 2006 and headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina, Valencell develops wearable fitness monitoring technology and licenses this technology to consumer electronics manufacturers, mobile device and accessory makers, and sports and fitness brands for integration into their products. Valencell's PerformTek sensor technology seamlessly integrates into audio earbuds and connects with smartphone apps people are already using while exercising. It measures more real-time biometric and physiological data than any other fitness monitor with a high degree of accuracy and consistency, and uses that data to give people meaningful health and fitness assessments. PerformTek has been clinically validated by Duke University and other independent research institutions.

Ó Caoláin casts doubt over fitness of our Minister for Health

The Irish Times - Friday, October 12, 2012
MICHAEL O'REGAN
DIL SKETCH:REFERENCES TO Minister for Health Dr James Reilly are never far from Dil proceedings these days. The same applies to his would-be nemesis, former minister of State Risn Shortall.
Yesterday, she was in the chamber for Opposition Leaders Questions, which were taken by Tnaiste and Labour leader Eamon Gilmore.
She sat next to fellow Dublin TD Tommy Broughan, an ideological soulmate who, like herself, is without the Labour whip these days. While they sat on the Labour benches, they were a distance from their erstwhile parliamentary colleagues who are still firmly under the whip.
Shortall and Broughan engaged in conversation, while Fianna Fils Willie ODea challenged Gilmore to clear up the confusion about allowances for public sector workers.
I am happy to clear up any confusion in Deputy ODeas mind, said Gilmore.
The Tnaiste should do that for Deputy Shortall, too, said Fianna Fils Timmy Dooley.
The Shortall-Broughan conversation ended abruptly when the source of Shortalls wrath was referred to by Sinn Fins Caoimhghn Caolin.
Is the Tnaiste in any way concerned at the contempt of the Minister for Health, Deputy Reilly, for those who question him, Caolin asked.
