Inside the illegal underground gyms of the COVID-19 pandemic – CNET
Posted: October 24, 2020 at 4:56 am
When gyms closed, many reopened in secret.
Michael* pulls up to the back entrance of his warehouse gym at 4:50 a.m. He parks, walks up to the big metal garage door and begins to open it with the chain pulley, trying to be a bit quieter than usual -- just in case another tenant in the strip mall is there, too. After a few squeaks and shrieks from the chain (and a few winces from Michael), the gym is open for business. Except it's not, really.
A few states eastward, Samantha* sits in her car in the parking lot of her local boutique fitness studio. She stares at the storefront and wonders when she'll be able to unlock the doors again. She mulls over how her studio will survive -- how she'll pay her employees -- and decides to run discreet classes for cash fees.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced hundreds of thousands of businesses to close abruptly, including gyms and fitness studios. When that happened in early 2020, gym owners reluctantly closed their doors, hoping to reopen in two weeks when things went back to "normal." But, things have yet to return to normal, and many fitness professionals, who either didn't want to or couldn't afford to stay closed, secretly reopened their gyms against public health orders.
Michael and Samantha decided to reopen their businesses to survive. They decided to pay their bills and their employees, despite the known health risks of congregating in groups while the novel coronavirus raged on. They took as many safety precautions as they could -- limiting the number of people allowed inside their gyms, sanitized surfaceswith rigor, requiredfacial coveringsand tried as best they could to keep air circulating without opening windows and doors, so no one would see the fitness classes running. They hoped those precautions were enough to protect their clients. And they aren't the only ones going against public health restrictions.

In 2020, prohibition isn't about alcohol.
In 2020, prohibition is not about alcohol -- it's about fitness.
In the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, most businesses were closed to prevent groups of people from congregating in indoor spaces, where the coronavirus can more easily spread. Gyms were some of the first businesses to close, based on the idea that the gym environment is more conducive to spreading germs than other spaces. In a gym, you have people breathing heavily (either masked or unmasked), sweating and touching a lot of different surfaces -- all things that can spread the coronavirus.
Despite those safety concerns, people across the US spent several months doing something they weren't supposed to be doing -- working out at a gym with other people. Gym bros longing for a muscle pump have squeezed themselves into tiny apartment gyms (where they don't even reside),professional athletes found workarounds to practice their craft, and across the city perhaps most obsessed with fitness, Los Angeles, an entire network of speakeasy gyms have emerged to fit the needs of those who want to work out, even though the city closed down fitness facilities.
As you might imagine, opinions on this are strong. As one Reddit user said in response to an NPR story about secret gyms, "...Gym owners caught doing this should be charged with murder when this is finally over. [I'm] disgusted."
In response, another user says, "These people know the risks associated with...working out in an enclosed space Instead of attacking gym patrons, you should make candy bars and smoking illegal. Make it mandatory that everyone in the US lose weight, punishable by fine or imprisonment."
In any case, history shows us that prohibition doesn't work -- or, at least, it doesn't work well. Banning something people want doesn't stop people from doing that thing. It just makes them do it in secret, public safety concerns be damned.
Read more: Is it safe to go back to the gym during coronavirus?
Working out in secret isn't anything new, but it's definitely more common thanks to the coronavirus.
Michael and Samantha aren't an anomaly. Gym owners all around the US took their operations underground and offered fitness classes or workout spaces to people who were willing to risk anything for fitness. In 2020, that risk is potentially contracting a deadly disease that's killed more than 220,000 people as of this writing.
Paul Bamba, a celebrity fitness trainer and owner of the gym Trifecta Strong in New York City, says his role as a fitness business owner in New York has enlightened him to several underground gyms in the area. One in particular had to hide its operation from a US National Guard troop and state officials at one point, Bamba says.
"It goes to show the lengths people were willing to go to get a workout in during the lockdown," he says.
Bamba explains that the underground gym isn't actually anything new. "Speakeasy gyms and underground gyms have always been around," he says, but "With the COVID-19 lockdowns, you are seeing an uptick in these types of gyms."
Sometimes, gyms get shut down for corruption (either of their own accord or by the city they're in, and often for financial reasons), Bamba says, and don't reopen publicly. Instead, these gyms reopen their doors only to long-term or high-paying clients, and they "do it with discretion because they'd have to close if they were caught."
Other fitness professionals operate underground in the sense that they conduct fitness classes or personal training in an inappropriate space, Bamba says. That is, they may train clients in multipurpose rooms, conference rooms or really anywhere they can get the job done -- but these spaces aren't always the safest places to operate a fitness business.
Operating a true gym or studio requires licenses and permits, and operating without those could mean a building isn't up to code, the equipment is old or unsafe, or the facility isn't meeting cleaning standards for gyms.
So, the concept of the underground gym isn't new, but the pandemic has brought it to light. And it's certainly increased the number of illegal operations.
Exercising, especially in groups, makes people happy.
Fitness is a vice as much as it is a healthy habit. For many people, it's a necessity. It's an outlet, a force majeure.
Most people are no strangers to the health benefits of exercise, even if they don't care enough to exercise on a regular basis. But people who have been working out regularly for months or years, well, those are the people who can't quit.
"Exercise gives people a tremendous sense of well-being, with boosts to self-esteem, energy levels, mood, sleep and memory retention, to name a few," says Dr. Renee Exelbert, a licensed psychologist and certified personal trainer.
She's right: Studies suggest that regular exercise can be just as effective as antidepressant medication for mild to moderate depression, and that exercising for as little as one hour per week can prevent 12% of future cases of depression.
According to Exelbert, exercise actually causes structural changes to the brain, which explains the massive mental health benefits. Working out induces neuroplasticity, she says, which refers to the creation of new neural pathways. In this case, those pathways promote feelings of calm and well-being.
"Exercise also creates positive changes in the hippocampus," Exelbert says, "a part of the brain that is shrunken in individuals with depression and is responsible for learning, memory, mood and appetite."
There you have it. Longtime exercisers experience a dramatic downturn emotionally and physically if they go too long without working out. For these people, exercise is a non-negotiable -- if that means working out illicitly, so be it.
There are plenty of apps and devices to keep us fit at home, but they don't always hit the same.
Why risk contracting COVID-19 or face legal action for reopening your gym when you could just work out at home? At-home workouts and digital fitness options definitely provide viable options for working out safely during the pandemic for some. But for others, it cannot replicate that experience of being in a gym, with access to all of the equipment you need and the sense of community from the other gym-goers.
"Hard-core gym-goers have favorite machines, favorite exercises," Exelbert says. "Many have routines, where they can alternate between various machines on certain days to amplify their gains. They love seeing if they can handle 10 more pounds on a certain machine that they use regularly, or the physical feeling of pushing through their last rep. They miss the 'high'," she says.
People go to the gym to clear their head, shake off the day's stress and escape. The act of leaving the house and going somewhere to work out is more invigorating than walking to your living room and picking up the single pair of dumbbells you were able to buy before the fitness equipment supply chain died.
Fitness equipment is in short supply, so many people can't recreate their ideal workout at home.
The lack of that ability to go to a "sacred place," Exelbert says, doesn't allow for the same feeling of escape, inspiration and motivation. For people who love the community aspect of their gym -- like people who frequent group fitness classes -- working out at home can feel disconnected.
On top of that, working out at home doesn't allow some people to work out the way they actually want to. For instance, if you love powerlifting but live in an apartment, there's a slim chance you can fit a squat rack inside. Can you step outside and go for a run? Sure, but if you don't like running, you probably won't prioritize it, and then your health and fitness suffer because you don't have access to a gym.
Studies tell us adherence is the most important factor in a successful exercise regimen. No matter what you like -- be it HIIT, CrossFit, running, weightlifting, pilates, barre or something else -- the best type of exercise is the type you can stick to. Lack of access to fitness facilities has ruined adherence for people who enjoy specialty workouts that can't always be replicated at home.
CNET's Health Editor Sarah Mitroff knows that well. "It took me years to find a type of exercise I enjoyed enough to do it regularly. For me, that's rock climbing. Before the pandemic, going to the climbing gym was a big priority in my life. Since my gym's been closed, it's been a struggle to find the motivation to do other workouts, besides going for walks," she says.
All of these reasons explain why people would go to an illegally operating speakeasy gym, despite legitimate health risks or shutdowns from local health officials. For many, the threat of COVID-19 just isn't enough for them to stop going to their favorite in-person workout class or gym.
Hopefully, Zoom workouts will be a thing of the past soon.
Now that gyms and fitness studios have opened in many states, albeit with restrictions, it's probably safe to assume that many black-market operations will come back above ground and comply with local guidelines. However, that may not be the case for all gyms and fitness studios.
Samantha says her speakeasy-style gym made loads of cash -- and she doesn't plan to record it as business income, because there's no record of it. The same is true for trainers who went digital and began accepting Venmo, PayPal, Cash App or Zelle donations. When you're a business owner or sole proprietor struggling to survive, paying taxes is the last thing you want to do.
However, that strategy is perhaps even more illegal than reopening your gym during pandemic shutdown orders. Accepting cash payments as a business owner and not reporting on your yearly income tax return isillegal. Even if you don't have a business license, if you depend on the cash income for your livelihood, you still have to report it to the IRS and pay taxes on it. Still, some gym owners may choose to continue this route even after gyms reopen, despite the law.
Some studios feel that the restrictions required at gyms and fitness studios make operations clunky. Wearing masks is one thing -- it's uncomfortable to work out in a mask but it's not a big deal -- but sanitizing and social distancing are the real challenges, Michael says.
Having to sanitize everything between classes means more time is needed between classes, which means studios must run fewer classes each day. Spacing people out by six feet on all sides slashes the capacity of any gym or studio. Some people aren't willing to put up with these restrictions so they cancel their memberships, Michael laments. Others won't return until they don't have to wear a mask. Both are reasons gyms might continue to operate underground -- to avoid those restrictions.
As the weather turns cold and it gets tougher to exercise outdoors, more and more people will be grappling for a space inside closed doors. With public health guidelines remaining in full effect, it wouldn't be surprising to see more gyms start or revert to speakeasy operations (or simply ignore the rules and hope for the best).

How to set up an Apple Watch: simple tips to get the most from your fitness tracker – woman&home
Posted: at 4:55 am
When it comes to fitness trackers, the Apple Watch is a sophisticated (yet simple to use) piece of tech.
If youve taken the plunge and, of the best fitness trackers and smartwatches on the market, youve bought the Apple Watch, the next step is to learn how to set it up. Youll want to get the most out of it once youre wearing it, after all.The great news is that it just takes a few simple steps to set the watch up and get started, as weve explained below.
Before you get set though, in order to sync your watch properly (and have full control of your new piece of tech) you will need to make sure that you have an iPhone with the latest version of iOS downloaded. Once thats resolved, this is what you need to do.
Want to take your new watch out of its shiny white box? And then put it on your wrist as soon as you can? We dont blame you. But this is not the ideal way to get it set up. In fact, for ease, the best way to sync your new Apple Watch with your phone is to have it laid down on a clean, flat surface.
If you havent already, attach the watch to the charger. Once fully charged, you can then turn it on. Find the button on the side of the watch and hold it down until you see the Apple logo appear. Make sure your iPhone is connected to WIFI and that Bluetooth is switched on.
Once your new Apple Watch has sprung to life, it will direct you to bring your watch closer to the phone in order to pair them. You should see the words Use your iPhone to set up this Apple Watch. Press continue and they should start syncing.
If youre transferring data from an old Apple Watch, make sure youve backed it up before you start this process. Otherwise the data could be lost. Make sure that you dont move your phone away from your Apple Watch until this process is complete.
Halfway through the syncing process, a message should appear instructing you to hold your Apple Watch up to the camera on your phone. Now is the time you can (finally) put your watch on your wrist and continue the setup process. It usually takes a few seconds before a second message appears to tell you that theyve paired.
At this point the devices will also prompt you to sign in to your watch with the Apple ID you use on your phone. This means you can then transfer apps and also use your account for any in-app purchases. This is also when you can input your credit card details for Apple Pay, if youd like to activate it.
You may also be prompted to input a password. Its always a good idea to do this, just in case your watch is lost or stolen. Try and choose a combination that wont be obvious. And that only you will know.
The watch will come with basic apps that youre probably already familiar with on your phone. These include Apple Pay and the Activity app, which tracks your steps. Youll also be able to see your messages and phone calls on your watch.
Syncing your phone and watch together means that you can use the Apple Watch app on your phone. This enables you to adjust how the watch looks or to rearrange or delete apps. To do this, simply tap on the app on your phone, and then My Watch to make any changes.
One of the main reasons for buying an Apple Watch was probably to use it to track your health and fitness. Youll most likely be familiar with the Activity app from your iPhone. Its visual Move and Exercise rings can give you an overview of your health and fitness. This is a key component of your Apple Watch.
Want to change your daily Move and Exercise goals? Go to the rings in the Activity app and then increase or decrease the number of calories you want to burn each day. The Stand ring also gives you prompts to get up and move more throughout the day.
If youre into your fitness and want something more specific, the Workout app gives you the ability to set goals for different workouts. This includes running, swimming or cycling. Once you decide what goal you want to set, touch the workout you want to do. Next, click on the three dots (the more button) set a goal (whether time or distance) and then start your workout.
While youre working out you can simply raise your wrist and the screen will come alive. This will show you how many miles youve covered, for instance, and how many calories youve burnt.
If you want to go beyond this, Apple Watch has other pre-set apps that you can use to get a more detailed picture of your health.
Available on Apple Watch series 4 and above, the ECG app (part of the Health app) records an electrocardiogram of your heart to check that its functioning properly. Another go-to for women is the Cycle Tracking app. Available on most iPhones, its helps you record your menstrual cycle, allowing you to build up a clearer picture or note any abnormal patterns.
These, though, are just the starting point. The Apple Watch has another 20,000 apps available. These cover everything from nutrition tips to hiking, which can be downloaded via your iPhones Apple Watch app.

Jordyn Woods Reveals What Inspired Her To Take Fitness Seriously, Her Go-To Workouts & Favorite Cheat Meal – HollywoodLife
Posted: at 4:55 am
Jordyn Woods opened up EXCLUSIVELY to HollywoodLife about her approach to fitness, why working out isnt just a trend to her, and the snack she considers her guilty pleasure!
Jordyn Woods is getting personal when it comes to her health. The Trigger star, 23, chatted EXCLUSIVELY with HollywoodLife about how she takes care of her mind, body and spirit through exercising and enjoying certain foods in moderation. Her journey with fitness has always been something motivated by fostering a healthy mentality. I think a big thing about me is that I am really big on mental health. And fitness has been my form of therapy through everything, Jordyn shared withHL.
Through losing my father, I really turned to fitness, she revealed, referencing the loss of her father,John Woods, who lost his battle with cancer in 2017 when Jordyn was just 20 years old. It was that traumatic event in Jordyns young life that really got her into working out as a healthy coping mechanism. It wasnt just a little trend to me; it is more than being trendy, she shared. The young starlet, whos taken her relationship with NBA starKarl-Anthony Towns public, confessed that she sees herself like everyone else. The 23-year-old was so candid about affirming that she works just as hard as so many of her fans do at the gym.
Jordyn Woods works violet, camo leggings and a black long sleeve fit top on her way to the gym [MEGA].I am someone who lost weight and I did it the traditional way and worked my butt off to get to the point that I am at today, she continued. I am like every other girl, it is not some extreme thing that I did that truly worked, but what works for me can work for a lot of other people. Despite her dedication to her health, Jordyn admitted that shes no fitness guru or fitness expert. I am a regular girl that actually had to put in the work and saw the results.
Indeed, Jordyn even revealed for what workouts she really loves to breakout when she hits the gym! I love to do workouts with bands, she shared. I will just use bands and anything you can find around the house because not all the time can I go to the gym, so me being on the road all the time and traveling it all has to be about convenience for me at the end of the day. So, doing banded workouts is super helpful and to mix it up with the bands is the way to go.
Jordyn Woods arrives at her PrettyLittleThing collection launch in West Hollywood on October 15, 2020 [BACKGRID].Clearly, Jordyn has used her workouts and fitness routine as a means of benefitting every aspect of her health! But even the stunning starlet loves to enjoy a sweet every once in a while. I love donuts, she enthusiastically admitted to HL. Donuts are my guilty pleasure. Apple Watch Series 6 vs. Fitbit Sense: Health, fitness and smartwatch features compared – CNET
Posted: at 4:55 am
$399 at Apple
$329 at Amazon
The Apple Watch Series 6 and Fitbit Sense are top smartwatches that can help keep an eye on your fitness levels and act as a phone alternative on your wrist. Both also have an electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG -- Apple uses ECG) app, track workouts, sleep and blood oxygen levels, but they're different in the way they go about doing these things. To help you decide which is right for you, I've compared them on everything from fitness tracking to battery life and overall performance.
If you have an Android phone, the Fitbit is your only option, but both work with iOS devices, making the decision trickier if you have an iPhone. After two weeks of wearing these watches, I can tell you that there is no one-size-fits-all option. If you want the best overall smartwatch, with seamless fitness tracking and safety features, get the $399 (379, AU$599)Apple Watch. If you want the most robust sleep tracking, temperature sensor and the best battery life, get the $329 (299, AU$499) Fitbit Sense.
The latest Apple Watch has a robust set of fitness tracking features, an FDA-cleared ECG, blood oxygen tracking and all the responsiveness you could want from a smartwatch. It's also the better option if you need built-in LTE to use your watch without your iPhone nearby. Read the Apple Watch review.
The Fitbit Sense also offers an FDA-cleared ECG, strong sleep tracking, a temperature sensor and a stress tracking sensor. Unlike the Apple Watch, it also works with Android, has plenty of third-party watch faces to choose from, and offers the better battery life of the two watches. Read the Fitbit Sense review.
The Series 6 looks like every other Apple Watch that has come before it, with a square face available in two sizes (either 40 or 44mm) plus a digital crown and side button. The Sense looks like a higher-end Versa and comes in just one 40mm size with a stainless steel rim around the square face, but instead of a physical button, it has an indentation on the side that vibrates when pressed and can be used to control the screen. While the Fitbit is physically larger than the 40mm Apple Watch, the actual screen size is only a hair bigger than the Apple Watch because of the bezels. The Apple Watch also has bezels around the screen, although they're slimmer than those on the Sense.
Each watch has a color, always-on screen that's easy to see in broad daylight, although I found the Apple Watch takes the edge for overall brightness when glancing down at my wrist during an outdoor workout.
The Sense has many more watch faces to choose from than the Apple Watch, including third-party ones. However, you can further customize some Apple Watch faces to include complications, which are similar to shortcuts: They can display information such as weather or calendar appointments at a glance. Both also have different colors and hardware finishes to choose from.
Straps on both are easy to swap in and out with quick release buttons and you can change up the look with a wide variety of bands including leather, woven and silicone options.
Each watch can scan for potential signs of a heart condition called atrial fibrillation or aFib with their ECG apps. Place your finger on the digital crown for 30 seconds on the Apple Watch, while you place your index and thumb on the opposite corners of the Fitbit Sense for the same amount of time to take a reading.
You can share results from both with your doctor. See where the ECG is available around the world on the Apple Watch and on the Fitbit Sense. Each watch can also monitor for signs of high or low heart rate and notify you accordingly.
ECG on the Fitbit Sense
Both can also track SpO2, or blood oxygen saturation, while you sleep. Check levels in the Health app on youriPhone for the Apple Watch, or wait for the Fitbit to calculate your nightly average on the SpO2 watch-face about an hour after waking up. It's also displayed in the sleep section within the Fitbit app as a graph, but will only show variations throughout the night and not exact percentages. The Apple Watch also lets you take a spot check of SpO2 and takes background readings throughout the day -- the Fitbit doesn't have an on-demand reading. Neither one of these watches are intended to be used as medical devices and may not be as accurate as a traditional pulse oximeter which is what doctors use to measure SpO2.
Fitbit's watch has two additional sensors that the Apple Watch lacks: a temperature sensor that measures variations in skin temperature throughout the night, and an EDA or electrodermal activity sensor that uses sweat to determine stress levels. Changes in baseline temperature (like what's monitored with the Sense) can indicate a number of different conditions like the onset of a fever or changes in menstrual cycle.
But as interesting as having all this data is, stress detection on the Sense in particular seems more like a work in progress than a fully fledged health feature at the moment. To take a measurement you first place your palm over the watch face for 2 minutes while the EDA sensor analyzes sweat levels. The watch then uses this metric, along with sleep, activity and heart rate variability data to calculate a stress score that can give you insight into how your body responds to stress. The problem is the Sense doesn't give you any indication of what to do with a high or low stress management score, like getting more sleep or holding off on a strenuous workout. There are some guided meditations in the Fitbit app, but I'm not sure how effective they were at reducing my stress levels.
The daily Stress Management Score from the Fitbit Sense
To access these guided meditations, as well as guided workouts, more nuanced health data sleep and temperature variations you will need to pay $10 a month for a Fitbit Premium account. Apple will soon roll out its $10 a month Fitness Plus service that offers workout classes to cast on your iPhone, iPad or Apple TV and sync directly to your Apple Watch.
Both also offer native sleep tracking, but the Fitbit Sense has a lot more data about your sleep than the Apple Watch. Premium subscribers can get a breakdown of their sleep stages -- like deep, REM and light -- breathing rate, SpO2 and temperature variations culminating in a sleep score in the morning. The Apple Watch focuses more on establishing a healthy bedtime routine and mostly looks at duration of sleep which shows periods of awake time during the night as well as heart rate and SpO2 data.

The Apple Watch also has a fall detection feature that can call emergency services and contacts if you remain motionless after a hard fall. It also has noise level alerts, irregular heart rate alerts, VO2 max measurements and mobility metrics. And it's also the only one that you can potentially give to kids or elderly relatives to keep an eye on their daily health data with Family Setup.
Each watch has a range of different exercises that it can track, on top of general metrics like steps and calories. The Apple Watch has over 40 different workouts to choose from while Fitbit has over 20 available that cover all the main options. Both watches also automatically detect certain workouts including walks and runs, so you get credit for your effort even if you forget to start a workout manually. They're also water-resistant, allowing them to track swims.
Both have built-in GPS so you can track the route of your outdoor workouts without bringing your phone, but the Sense takes around 10 seconds to acquire a signal outdoors while the Apple Watch is within 1 to 2 seconds. I did a 4-kilometer outdoor run on both and the distance and route were pretty much the same when I compared the Sense and Apple Watch results on a map.
The Sense can show you what heart rate zone you're in and encourage you to push harder (or back off).
The Sense also shows you heart rate zones such as cardio, fat burn and peak, on the screen in real time. It can buzz as you enter different heart rate zones, which may be helpful if you're trying to train at a particular intensity.
However, when I compared the heart rate tracking on the Apple Watch and Sense for an outdoor run against a chest strap, the standard for this type of metric during workouts, I noticed the Apple Watch kept up while the Sense often lagged behind by about 20 to 30 beats per minute. After around 10 to 15 minutes, the Sense caught up to the strap's readings.
After your workout, the watches break down your metrics in either the iPhone Fitness app (Apple Watch), or the Fitbit app (Sense). I love how clearly the Fitbit app presents your workout data, including splits and heart rate zones. The Apple Watch only gives you your range, splits and heart rate on a graph rather than breaking it down into zones.

While the Fitbit focuses on health tracking, the Apple Watch is the better package if you also want a designated smartwatch. You'll get more third-party apps, much tighter integration with the iPhone and faster performance overall. On the Fitbit Sense, even minor tasks like changing watch faces or syncing apps can take 30 seconds or more to complete, whereas on the Apple Watch it's almost instantaneous.
Responding to notifications or text messages is easy on the Apple Watch: dictate, send a quick canned response, or scribble on the keyboard. You can also take calls from your wrist because the mic and speaker are decent quality. If you have an iPhone, the Sense won't let you respond to notifications, but if you're on Android you can either send a quick response or dictate a message. The same goes for phone calls -- only Android users can make or answer calls from their wrist with the Sense as long as it's in range of the phone.
The Apple Watch is the only one that has an LTE option for $100 more than the Wi-Fi only model (it costs $499 in the US) to take calls and stay connected without your phone nearby.
Each has the option to use a voice assistant: Siri on the Apple Watch, or Alexa on the Fitbit Sense. Google Assistant support is coming at some stage on the Sense, although at the time of this review it hasn't been activated on my watch. Put simply, Siri can do a lot more on the Apple Watch than Alexa on the Sense, like start a workout, send a text message or start a timer. Alexa is limited in what it can do, and it's a lot slower, but it does let you control smart home devices if you have any. The Apple Watch also lets you control smart home devices with Siri.
Finally, you can't store your own music on the Fitbit Sense. Instead, you're limited to downloading music for offline listening from Deezer or Pandora with a premium subscription. The Apple Watch on the other hand lets you store your own music (it has 32GB of storage) or download music from Apple Music for offline listening with a subscription.
With notifications from your phone, sleep tracking and the always-on display active, I was able to get a day and change out of the 40mm Apple Watch Series 6. You'll need at least 30% battery remaining to track your sleep, so you'll probably need to charge this watch every day to keep it topped up, unless you turn off the always-on display which can extend the battery life to almost two days.
The Fitbit Sense lasts two full days with notifications, always-on display and sleep tracking and can extend it to almost 5 full days by turning off the always-on display.
Each watch charges with a proprietary magnetic puck that snaps on to the back. The Apple Watch charger is forwards and backwards-compatible with earlier Apple Watches, while the Fitbit Sense charger is designed specifically for the watch (so you can't use earlier Fitbit chargers from the Versa, for example, with the Sense). Both charge to 100% in about an hour and a half.
The Apple Watch is the stronger overall smartwatch that blends fitness tracking with an ECG and SpO2 sensor, but only if you have an iPhone. The Fitbit Sense has a lot to offer for Android users, specifically if you want an ECG, robust sleep tracking and are intrigued by stress and temperature tracking.

Robin Williamss Son Wants to Improve Your Mental Health With a Mood Chew – InsideHook
Posted: at 4:55 am
I experienced mental-health issues throughout most of my life, admits Zak Williams. So with this product were introducing, we wanted to provide a foundation for mental-health support.
Williams just launched PYM (Prepare Your Mind) Original Mood Chews, a gummy-like edible thats explicitly not CBD but is supposed to help combat stress and trauma with a natural formulation. The son of the late comedian/actor Robin Williams, Zak had experienced anxiety issues in his teens and twenties, which led to panic attacks and, as he notes, a lot of ineffectual self-medication.
When it came to my dad dying by suicide, those issues went into overdrive, he tells us. I was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and my levels of stress and anxiety went through the roof. I started using alcohol to manage my anxiety; that didnt work too well. And cannabis made the anxiety worse.
After a try with prescription pharmaceuticals (they made me numb and not like myself) Williams found two pathways to an improved state of mind. The first was a personal commitment to focus on mental health advocacy and work with nonprofit groups within that space. The second was testing out amino acid formulations and other natural compounds to try and help his anxiety, while taking alcohol and other substances out of the equation.
You can take PYM like a vitamin or a painkiller, as co-founder Olivia June told us.
PYM
Which is how PYM launched. The citrus-flavored chews contain the neurotransmitters, amino acids and adaptogens GABA, L-Theanine and Rhodiola together as kind of a quick, easily digestible remedy for anxiety and stress.
There is a role for pharmaceuticals and clinical treatment, explains Dr. Raghu Appasani, a research psychiatrist and mental-health advocate whos part of PYMs scientific advisory board. But I see PYM as something you could easily incorporate into a healthy lifestyle. Its like brushing your teeth or showering but its mental hygiene.
You can treat it like a vitamin and take at the beginning or end of your day, or use like a painkiller if youre anticipating anxiety or being overwhelmed, adds Olivia June, the products co-founder (and as of last week, Williamss spouse).
I was admittedly skeptical. I tried PYM a few times (directions: chew for 20 seconds, then swallow; the taste and texture is inoffensive and bland, like a mildly fruity gummy). I was supposed to feel results in 20 minutes, and I certainly cant say I felt worse after I took it. Things did feel a bit lighter and my focus was possibly stronger, but I also wasnt sure if I was just experiencing a placebo effect.
While theres plenty of of published science behind amino acids and adaptogens, even the founders of PYM are working off anecdotal evidence. When I asked how the efficacy of a chew could be specifically measured, Williams and his team were honest its a work in progress.
We worked with friends, family and a close network of about 30 people who took prototypes, he explains. We wanted to get some initial validation about it. It worked for almost everyone, but we went through three iterations in total to get something we felt confident about. Now were going to segue into a more formal clinical study over the next few months, using control groups and working with 400 trial participants.
So PYMs effectiveness might not be quantifiable to a degree wed all like. Still, mental health is a critical issue in this country (anxiety disorders affect 40 million adults, which is 18% of the U.S. population) and the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has certainly increased levels of anxiety and stress. Finding a more natural way to combat this that doesnt involve the letters C, B or D is a noble endeavor.
As well, even the founders note that PYM is only part of a larger lifestyle change, one that might involve meditation, mindfulness activities, a healthy diet and fitness.
Were seeking to replace unhealthy habits and self-medicating, says Williams. Look, I have no issues with properly prescribed medication and I appreciate people who can drink wine and enjoy it, but if they were using alcohol like I was to manage my anxiety I was actually damaging my mental health. I wanted something safe and effective.
As for the product name you can thank Robin Williams, indirectly. Pym is actually my middle name, says Zak, who then chuckles. My dad gave me that name because it sounded vaguely Welsh.
