Shane Thornton, by his own account, was living a dangerous, reckless life until five years ago when, at a co-worker's prodding, he tried Bikram yoga and had his life changed.
It's the fountain of youth, is what I tell people, Thornton said about a discipline that had such an immediate impact on his well-being that he moved from his Montana home to become a Bikram teacher who competes nationally in executing the poses that make up yoga.
I feel better now at 38 than I did at 28 for sure, said Thornton, who lives and teaches in San Antonio.
Cathy Mondloch-Seavey said Bikram yoga also changed her life. A nine-week training program converted her into a yoga instructor and a nationally recognized practitioner who is passing on the benefits to others.
I've seen it work with so many people around me, said Mondloch-Seavey, who teaches with Thornton at the Union, a workout center with outlets near Hollywood Park and Alamo Heights and at 11255 Huebner Road. It improves their quality of life.
Yoga, generally, is a vast subject with a philosophical basis that is focused on the connection between the mind and body, Mondloch-Seavey said. But she cautioned, students should not view Bikram yoga as a lot of sitting and chanting.
It's for people of all beliefs, said Mondloch-Seavey, who started practicing yoga in New Mexico and found a valued mentor first in Austin and then in San Antonio. Yoga is a lifetime thing.
Bikram yoga, conducted in a super-heated room to help the body become more flexible and to promote detoxification, consists of a series of postures designed to address common health issues, like stiff hips and bad knees.
But while doing that, it helps people deal with mental and emotional stress, Mondloch-Seavey said. It's a physical exercise that also teaches people patience, humility, faith in themselves and compassion toward others, she said.
Thornton said anyone can do it, and that people often feel better after just one class. It works your whole body, from the inside out, said Thornton. It's benefits are endless.

Naked Yoga Class Sparks Confidence
Posted: at 8:01 pm
Its no secret that yoga does wonders. For the mind, body and soul, yoga has a healing power unlike any other workout around. Yoga generates a wide variety of styles making it the perfect personalized workout.
Whether hot yoga is your thing or you prefer yoga hanging from a trapeze, there are numerous styles that youre bound to find perfectly suitable toward what you yearn to achieve.
But did you know, there is now a yoga class that specifically targets really getting in touch with you body? I mean like really getting in touch with it? Its called nagna yoga and in these classes, youre naked.
Yep. Naked.
You can participate in the bare-all class in Chelsea, NY at Bare & Naked.
Co-owners Joschi Schwarz and Monika Werner claim the naked practice is about being comfortable in your own skin, knowing and loving yourself at your core and accepting your flaws.
FYI This video is NSFW
The two continued saying, If you are okay with being naked youll feel more comfortable in general and can take yourself anywhere in the world.
But how do the class participants feel about the class?
There are a lot of things that separate us in a normal yoga class, like what brand of yoga clothing youre wearing or how you look when youre wearing it, one attendee told Daily Mail. But when were naked, its like were all the same.

Workout of the week: Flow Yoga (Dance Yoga)

Figure Yoga, 917 Front St. No. 160, Louisville, 303-747-3667, thesanghastudios.com, annettebancroft.com
Instructor: Annette Bancroft, of Eldorado Canyon, who has been dancing since age 3. Bancroft has danced for the Denver Nuggets and the Colorado Crush, as well as a variety of others. She also teaches tap and other kinds of yoga classes. She got involved with yoga for a deeper connection with her spirituality.
She created Flow Sessions about six months ago to incorporate the different aspects of everything she loves into one.
What is the workout? A fusion of different world dance styles and yoga. The first 30 minutes were high-energy dance routines, several done in a circle. Class wraps up with yoga postures specifically designed to complement the dance styles. We did several balancing poses, too.
Dance styles include samba, flamenco, belly dance, African, capoeira, ballet and even a classical Indian temple dance called the Bharata Natyam.
Routines are simple, light-hearted and designed to be easy for anyone to follow, even if you don't have a dance (or yoga) background.
What's different? Here's where the class gets particularly interesting: The dance styles are organized to specifically coordinate with the body's chakras (centers of spiritual energy), starting from the bottom up. For example, to stimulate the root chakra: grounding African dance. For the second chakra: hip-centric dance styles, such as belly dancing. For the heart chakra: flamenco.

The music also corresponds to the chakras, Bancroft says. You can feel classical music in your crown chakra. The shouting during capoeira opens the throat chakra.
Bringing that all together creates a rounded experience and gives the dancer different styles to play with and connect with. It can also be a kind of self-check: Where are you feeling stifled? Where is your body feeling open?
