However, I am being pinned down, stretched, twisted and stood on, while wearing unusual trousers, for a very good reason, and that is purely relaxation... oh, and to become more healthy.
The therapy I tested out this week is Thai yoga massage, a new treatment to arrive at the recently-renovated treatment rooms in Natural Health, WGC.
And while it may not always look that pleasant, I can assure you it is.

Fitness classes that can rock your body
Posted: June 16, 2012 at 12:11 pm
If the thought of another grueling boot camp class has you yawning and dragging your feet, why not try a workout that makes fitness feel like a party?
Whether you like to dance, spin or just channel your inner rock god or goddess, there's a class out there that will fit the bill, and still burn fat and build muscle.
The L.A. Times scoured Los Angeles gyms to come up with three total-body workout classes that bring the music and fun from the clubs into the studio. Think of these as alcohol-free happy hours or your time to release stress while keeping your fitness goals on track.
Prices vary, depending on whether you belong to the gym where the class is offered or buy packages of classes. Some sites offer discounts for the first class. Single classes cost around $20 to $25.
Buti Yoga
(Multiple locations. Classes can be found at http://www.butifitness.com.)
Buti Yoga, developed by yoga and fitness expert Bizzie Gold, is a sexy hybrid of Miami Booty Dance, yoga and CrossFit-type plyometric moves (explosive moves to build power).
Set to loud Afro-Brazilian funk, hip-hop and reggae music, Buti's intense 60- to 90-minute workouts will have you swiveling your hips during warrior one pose and shaking your bum during deep prayer squats.
The suggestive moves are enough to make some first-timers blush or giggle, but Gold believes that Buti's sexy stance is good at building self-esteem and body awareness.
Buti (pronounced booty, not beauty) also amps up the calorie burn. Plank jumping jacks, squats and mountain climbers keep your heart rate elevated between longer poses or vinyasa. And many classic static yoga moves, such as triangle pose, have been transformed into dynamic exercises to help participants stay in a cardio zone.

Even more impressive than her nonchalance about the move is that Caparroso is blind.
Caparroso, 51, has traveled around the world, competed in the Paralympics and is raising twins as a single mom.
Not once has her lack of vision prevented her from seeing her dreams become reality.
"Various people along the way made a difference in my life," she said.
She's lived in the Seattle area since 1995 and currently lives in Edmonds with her 5-year-old daughters, Daniella and Isabella, her nanny, and her 10-year-old guide dog, Gemma.
"I'm self-sufficient and independent, but I can't do it alone," she said. "I depend on my network of support."
Weekdays she leaves her home by 5:20 a.m. to catch a bus to her job at the Environmental Protection Agency in Seattle. The job has allowed her to follow her dreams of supporting a family and being a homeowner.
Caparroso was born in Mexico City with infant glaucoma. By the time she turned 7, Caparroso completely lost the little vision she was born with.
Her family dealt with Caparroso's blindness by ignoring it.

An alternative yoga star visits Prague

Duncan Wong, a world-famous yoga celebrity, comes to Prague with his workshop "Love Warrior Flow" June 16 at New Town Hall.
Wong is the creator of the Yogic Arts system, a synthesis of traditional yoga, martial arts and Thai massage therapy with elements of Pilates and modern dance. He believes these practices complement each other and are interconnected, and therefore should be practiced as such.
Both yogis and martial artists meditate in the same position and use the same breathing techniques, Wong says. Referring to yoga as a "solo act," which prepares the body and soul for a further step of interaction with people in dance or martial arts, Wong believes yoga practitioners should go "beyond the mat."
"I would say that eventually going beyond the mat and into a space of both dynamic and sensual contact with other people is a point of maturity and fulfillment," he says.
When: June 16 at 7 Where: New Town Hall Tickets: 499 K Web: Praguespiritfestival.cz
Wong does not exactly look or behave like a traditional yoga guru. Uniting his experiences of street fighting and kickboxing while growing up in San Francisco with a serious study of formal dojang, a style of Korean martial arts, as well as yoga, he represents a bridge between the practices of the East and the West.
Born to parents of Chinese and Scottish descent, Wong combined his multicultural legacy by sustaining his studios and reputation in the diverse environments of New York City, Shanghai and Kyoto. After he had acquired celebrity status as a teacher in New York City, where he ran two successful studios and had celebrity clients including Madonna, Sting and Bjrk, Wong got fed-up with the life of luxury and moved to Shanghai in search of a simpler and more meaningful life.
Covered in tattoos, a legacy of his teenage years in San Francisco, Wong gained popularity in China and Japan as an unconventional yoga teacher. His practice involves direct connection, and the intimacy of his classes, which include massage, is not easily accepted in the Asian world of traditional values.
But Wong is not discouraged by such cultural differences. He compares the mentality in the States, Europe and Asia by saying they are "three completely different animals with very similar spirits."
"Attention, depth and openness, in that order," he adds.

Yogi Blair: Blair Bavin gets yoga instruction from Trudy Hennessy at the Spring Creek Class
A Springlands woman is answering the call of wives and girlfriends in Marlborough by encouraging their men to get off the couch and on to a yoga mat.
Trudy Hennessy, of The Yoga Room, is starting a men-only yoga class after receiving phone calls from women complaining about their partners' bad backs and general inflexibility.
The five-week course, at Spring Creek Community Centre in Ferry Rd, starts on Wednesday, June 27.
Ms Hennessy said each session was a full-body, cardiovascular workout.
There were lots of ways to practise yoga, she said.
"Each personal teacher brings a different style to yoga and I bring an energetic style. People are blown away. It's pretty challenging and people are overwhelmed by the results. Especially when they take it into the functional world and apply it to their sporting activities like running or cycling."
People had faster rates of recovery and increased endurance levels, she said.

Sahaja Yoga confers good health, busts stress: Australian study

Calcutta News.Net Tuesday 12th June, 2012 (IANS)
Sahaja Yoga founded by Mata Nirmala Devi, that is gaining greater acceptance worldwide for calming the mind and busting stress, contributes to promoting mental and physical health, according to a new study conducted in Australia.
The essence of Sahaja Yoga, described as mental silence, is much more than mere tranquillity, having several dimensions, including medically beneficial ones, Ramesh Manocha, senior lecturer of psychiatry at the University of Sydney Medical School, told IANS from Australia.
"We found that the health and well-being profile of people who had meditated for at least two years was significantly higher in the majority of health and well-being categories when compared to the (general) population," says Manocha.
Manocha was referring to his latest study on Sahaja Yoga, which focussed on meditation as mental silence, involving more than 348 people, conducted with colleagues Deborah Black and Leigh Wilson at the Sydney Medical School.
Fifty-two percent of the volunteers experienced mental silence "several times per day or more" while 32 percent were experiencing it "once or twice per day", according to Manocha, who is at the forefront of research into meditative disciplines.
"Our survey also demonstrated that practitioners had not only better mental and physical health but also a consistent relationship between health, especially mental health, and self-reported experience of mental silence," says Manocha.
Elaborating on mental silence, Manocha says: "As one learns to slow down the thoughts, the practitioner will start to perceive a small gap between each thought. With practice and by applying specific techniques, the meditator can widen the gap so that he experiences a thought or two and then a space of silence and then another thought or two."
"In this way, the gap between thoughts can be widened until there are long moments of no thoughts. Ultimately, the thoughts stop completely and the meditator remains fully alert and aware, but experiencing no thinking activity. This is 'mind emptiness' or mental silence of Sahaja Yoga," he said.
