Yoga and Boot Camp Go to the Dogs
Posted: at 9:45 am
ABC News' Mary Pflum reports: Early in the morning, while most humans and their pets are still in bed, a few brave souls start the day with boot camp.
They are not just pounding the pavement with two legs, however, but with many more, three or four to be exact.
They are taking part in Thank Dog! Bootcamp, a training program for dogs and their owners that has expanded to locations nationwide.
"We have aggressive dogs. We have overweight dogs. We have little dogs. We have dogs with three legs," Jill Bowers, the program's co-founder, told ABC News.
(Photo Credit: Bill Cunningham/ABC News)The program, now in cities from Boston to Chicago to Los Angeles, provides a one-of-a-kind fitness training program that allows dogs and their owners to work out alongside one another for an hour at a time.
"It's sort of killing two birds with one stone," Bowers said. "No matter what, you need exercise. A dog needs exercise and obedience training so they come every day."
The idea for Thank Dog! Bootcamp was born in 2007 after Bowers began working out at Barry's Bootcamp, a California-based workout program popular with celebrities like Kim Kardashian. Bowers then had the idea to partner the company she already owned, Thank Dog! Training, Southern California's leading dog obedience training company, with a Barry's-like boot camp regime for owners and dogs alike.
"When people sign up for boot camp, they don't leave because it becomes more of a lifestyle than anything," Bowers said.
Bowers and her business partner at the time got the idea off the ground and, in 2009, Bowers partnered with Noelle Blessey, a personal trainer and boot camp instructor, to bring the boot camp portion of obedience training to life.
Blessey took " Good Morning America" special correspondent Cameron Mathison through the paces of a typical 60-minute Thank Dog! class, which range in price from $10 as part of a package to $25 for a single class.

Joe Carter’s yoga routine

Psst, tough guy time to hit the mat. Really. Yoga for men is in the big leagues now.
Dont believe me? Just ask former Blue Jay slugger Joe Carter, who is starring in a DVD with Trish Stratus, pro wrestler-turned-yoga instructor, and has been doing yoga for years.
Called Stratusphere Yoga for Men, the 25 minute workout incorporates moves you wouldnt expect in a traditional class, including lunges, squats and push-ups.
I used to shy away from yoga because I thought it was for sissies, says the 52-year-old-old Carter. I was wrong its a great workout that every man needs to do on a regular basis.
It doesnt hurt that major sports teams, including the Maple Leafs and the Argonauts, use yoga in their training. Guys are clueing in, Stratus says. Athletes are discovering that it helps their injuries and even extends their careers.
Men are a growing market for yoga, says Michael DeCorte, who teaches Jock Yoga and says his classes are about 40 per cent men.
This is a generalization, but when the average male hears the word yoga, they think of spiritualism and things like that, he says. But if you want a good workout, Ill give you one no chanting, no incense, and youll be doing a lot more than touching your toes.
He says far from lying on a mat, a lot of repetition and stretches work the major muscles.
Stratus, who was a seven time World Wrestling Entertainment champion, befriended Carter a few years back at charity golf tournament.
He talked to her about his injuries from playing pro ball for decades, saying hed give anything to get rid of the pain. Stratus gave him the beginnings of a routine that quickly made him one of the converted.

There's no refuting yoga's ability to boost flexibility, ease tension, and bestow practitioners with a general glow of health and calm wellbeing. But does it actually play a role in weight loss? In his new book, The Science of Yoga: The Risks and the Rewards, author William J. Broad claims that the fitness industry has long been overstating the ability of yoga to melt away the kilos.
"The science is extraordinarily clear - if yoga does one thing, it slows you down, it lowers your metabolism," Broad said.
A 2006 Bangalore study found that regular practice of gentle hatha yoga cut the metabolic rate of female participants by a whopping 18 per cent. "So that means, if all other things are equal and you take in the same amount of calories, you gain weight," Broad said.
What about the active forms of yoga where the emphasis is on building a sweat? Researchers at Long Island University in 2007 tracked the metabolism of yogis performing hour-long sessions of ashtanga, a brisk yoga. It found the oxygen demands placed on the body were similar to those of a leisurely stroll. In 2005, researchers at the University of Wisconsin studied "power yoga" and found: "It's a great muscular workout, and you certainly sweat, but it's not an aerobic workout."
Broad explained why: "You just don't get your heart beating fast enough the way you do when you run, or do other types of heavy aerobic activity. And the studies show that whatever you might gain from some minimal increase in your muscle mass, the overwhelming physiological response is that your metabolism slows down."
He's also dismissive of the weight-loss ability of Bikram yoga, which is performed in rooms heated up to 40C. "It's weight loss because of water loss through sweat; it comes back in a day or so."
Bikram Yoga Joondalup owner Jo Harvey disagreed with Broad's assessment: "Many Bikram students all over the world have achieved significant weight loss through their practice," she said. "The unique combination of yoga asanas (poses) and heat achieves a higher heart rate than other dynamic forms of yoga."
While Rob Schutze, co-owner of The Yoga Space in West Perth said yoga "won't get your cardio fitness up as much as running or doing a spinning class six times a week", he argued it had very positive effects on the cardiovascular system.
"Certainly in my experience, I gained a lot of fitness when I started practising ashtanga yoga." Mr Schutze added that in his 11 years of teaching, he's never seen yoga result in weight gain. Yoga Moves teacher Jane Underwood said yoga could assist with weight loss through its ability to calm the mind.

Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13

The biggest hardware trend marking the launch of Windows 8 is the proliferation of touch-screen laptop/tablet hybrids. Some have screens that pull apart to become separate tablets, while others have screens that flip, twist, or rotate to give you a tabletlike shape to hold. We call those latter models convertible laptops, and one of the best examples to date is the new Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13.
The name Yoga is suggestive of the system's big selling point, that the display flips fully over to become a tablet. In fact, it has four basic usable positions -- clamshell laptop, tablet, stand, and tent.
The reason the Yoga stands out from the suddenly crowded touch-screen laptop scene is that it does something other convertible or hybrid laptops do not. When set up as a traditional laptop, the 13.3-inch Yoga doesn't compromise the all-important clamshell experience. The excellent double-hinge design means that it looks and works the same as any other ultrabook laptop, unlike the complex and often clunky mechanisms in systems such as the HP Envy x2, Sony Vaio Duo 11, or Dell XPS 12.
The Yoga works best as a full-time laptop and part-time tablet, because when it's folded back into a slate, you still have the keyboard pointing out from the back of the system. Although the keyboard and touch pad are deactivated in this mode, it's still not ideal. Plus, despite the hype, Windows 8 is still not a 100-percent tablet-friendly OS, and there are some frustrations that span all the Windows 8 tablet-style devices we've tested.
The Yoga certainly seems to be everyone's choice for a great Windows 8 ambassador -- both Microsoft and Intel have touted it as a best-in-class example, and Best Buy is currently featuring it in a television ad. At $1,099, you're paying a bit of a premium, but not outrageously so, for an Intel Core i5/8GB RAM/128GB solid-state drive (SSD) configuration (note that our early review unit had only 4GB of RAM installed), but a less expensive Core i3 version starts at $999. If I had to pick a single first-wave Windows 8 convertible touch-screen laptop, the Yoga would be at the top of my list.
Design, features, and display Despite its reputation as a maker of buttoned-down business laptops, Lenovo can always be counted on to produce intriguing designs. Most of those end up, like the Yoga, as part of the company's consumer-targeted IdeaPad line of products.
We've seen similar attempts at laptops that can double as tablets over the years, usually with a rotating center hinge that swivels around to let the device change forms (or more recently with a screen that slides down over the keyboard). Before Windows 8, most of these experiments weren't particularly successful, thanks to a combination of poor design, underpowered components, and an operating system that wasn't touch-friendly.
The other problem with those traditional convertibles has been that the single rotating center hinge was a potential weak point in the design. Lenovo says the Yoga's full-length hinge has been rigorously tested and is stronger than the older rotating convertible design, and in practice that definitely seems to be the case.
When opened into its clamshell position, the Yoga would be tough to pick out of a lineup of recent ultrabooks. The minimalist interior is dominated by a large buttonless clickpad, along with a island-style Lenovo keyboard, which means the flat-topped keys have a small curve along their bottom edges for easier typing.
As good as Lenovo's reputation is for excellent keyboards, I had a surprisingly amount of trouble with the Yoga's keyboard. I narrowed most of my issues down to the half-size right Shift key, which meant I often hit the up arrow when aiming for Shift. The end result was a lot of frustration and retyping, but after a few days one would naturally adjust to this specific layout. The touch pad is the same as you'd find in other clickpad Lenovos, including the recent high-end X1 Carbon. It offers plenty of space for multifinger gestures, but isn't as effective for manipulating the touch-centric Windows 8 UI as a finger would be.

Parents view yoga in elementary school as religious indoctrination
Posted: at 9:45 am
ENCINITAS, Calif. Parents in this seaside town are in a twist over yoga, saying that adding the ancient practice of meditative exercise to the school curriculum is tantamount to religious indoctrination into Hinduism.
School officials never thought that yoga, practiced by roughly 22 million Americans, would be controversial when they accepted a $533,000 grant from a local yoga studio to include Ashtanga yoga in a program where students also learn about healthy eating and cultivate small gardens.
"We've got a ton of yoga in Encinitas," said school board member Carol Skiljan, an occasional yoga practitioner.
Encinitas has several yoga studios, particularly along the stretch of Coast Highway 101 that runs through the retro-funky Leucadia neighborhood. Yoga is taught at the local YMCA; at nearby Camp Pendleton, it is used to help Marines who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder after having been in combat.
But soon after yoga teachers began leading students at five elementary schools in twice-weekly sessions of stretching, breathing and relaxing, four dozen parents protested to the school board, saying yoga is a system of spiritual beliefs.
School officials quickly announced that parents could choose to have their children excused from yoga class.
But attorney Dean Broyles, representing the parents, said a lawsuit may be necessary to oust yoga from the school district.
"I think school officials are confused about Eastern mysticism," said Broyles, president and chief counsel for the Escondido-based National Center for Law & Policy, which deals with issues of religious freedom and Christian values.
"If this were a program letting children sit silently and engage in Christian prayer, the district would never allow it," Broyles said.
So far, school officials are standing firm. The yoga classes are set to expand into the district's other four elementary schools in January, while researchers from the University of San Diego and the University of Virginia study whether yoga helps improve attendance at the schools and reduces fighting and bullying.
