New Yoga Studio Heats Up In Darien
Posted: November 30, 2012 at 6:46 am
DARIEN, Conn. - Venture Yoga recently opened in Darien and is using infrared heating for its hot yoga classes.
Owner Erin Huot said the infrared system is only one component that sets Venture apart from other yoga studios.
"People are literally addicted to it," she said of the hot yoga classes. Most yoga studios use convection heat from HVAC systems to heat their hot yoga classes, which warms the air around you. The infrared heat system heats you directly, radiating heat outward.
The result is a more energizing, detoxifying and healthy feeling, Huot said. It can help with arthritis, muscular issues, asthma, aches and pains, stress reduction and wrinkles. It is also greener, saving 80 percent more energy.
Venture opened in September and is on the second floor of 10 Center St. It offers 45 classes a week, led by 14 instructors. It hosts hot and non-hot Vinyasa yoga classes, as well as prenatal yoga, mommy and me, baby and me, and mat Pilates classes.
Huot worked in the finance world for several years before getting laid off. After working as a babysitter and personal assistant, she decided to open her own business.
"I asked myself, what do I love? What am I passionate about?" She was taking Vinyasa yoga classes several times a week and realized that she had her answer.
The classes at Venture focus more on fitness yoga than meditative yoga.
"Over time, yoga creates a sense of serenity. So you still experience that sense of well-being, the happiness, all the things you get from meditative yoga."
She also wants to foster a sense of community. Yoga can be a good way for people to come together, talk, maybe get a drink afterwards downstairs at Darien Social, she said. There also is a child care room so kids can come and play with each other while their parents take classes.

Yoga and Christianity: More Than What Meets the Eye
Posted: at 6:46 am
By Father John Flynn, LC
ROME, NOV. 30, 2012 (Zenit.org).- The popularity of yoga and various forms of Eastern philosophies and meditation methods has grown enormously in recent years. Questions remain, however, as to what extent they are compatible with Christianity.
The latest contribution to the debate over this topic is a book just published by an Australian De La Salle brother, Max Sculley, titled "Yoga, Tai Chi, Reiki: A Guide for Christians" (Connor Court Publishing).
These techniques are widely recommended as being good for fitness and relaxation, and few would at first see anything dangerous about them, Bishop Julian Porteous, one of Sydney's auxiliary bishops, commented in his foreword to the book.
However, he warned, "The world into which the practitioner is introduced is inimical to the Christian faith."
While some of the practices they promote may be helpful at a superficial level they are, Bishop Porteous adverted, "a Trojan horse for dangerous spiritual infiltration."
Brother Sculley explained that one of the main problems lies in the promotion of altered states of conscience. This, he noted, is a practice designed to lead people to experience a sense of oneness with the cosmos and the divine and to enable feelings of bliss. It brings with it, however, dangers ranging from mental illness to demonic influence.
Many Christians who practice yoga, tai chi and similar techniques do so without any desire to embrace the underlying philosophy or spiritual beliefs, yet, he commented, the mind-altering techniques in themselves bring with them serious spiritual risks.
In the section on yoga he explained that it is inextricably linked to the religious beliefs of Hinduism, which is in contradiction with Christianity on many fundamental points.

Dahn Yoga Life Newsletter Reveals Basis of Energy Principles Workshop
Posted: at 6:46 am
Dahn Yoga & Health Centers, Inc., a national leader in health and wellness celebrating their sixteenth year, reveal the basis of their Energy Principles Workshops in the November issue of the newsletter, Dahn Yoga Life.
Gilbert, AZ (PRWEB) November 29, 2012
Energy Principles Workshops, held twice yearly, alternately in Sedona, Arizona at Mago Retreat and in the Catskills region of New York at Honors Haven Resor, are explored in the issue. Dahn Yoga has developed the Energy Principles Leadership course, known as the "Dotong Course" as an expansion of Dahn Yoga practice to allow practitioners to discover and conquer the thoughts, patterns and habits that might block them in the pursuit of their dreams and provide ways to develop their own strengths.
LifeParticle Meditations, Collaborative Healing sessions and Qigong are all part of the three-day long Dahn Yoga workshop. This month's newsletter explores the profound impact of the training on the individual practitioners as well as the ripples that will be created as the participants share the ideas and methods with their home communities.
With Dahn Yoga classes as the first step on the path toward a more holistic lifestyle, Dahn Yoga Life shares an overview of how the workshop's content develops new confidence and strength, as the participants learn to help themselves as well as others to experience the way to live authentic and meaningful lives. Enthusiastic comments from several participants sum up the positive experiences that graduates of the Energy Principles Leadership Course garner in the process. "I would recommend the course if you have the heart to really want to help others and also want to learn to manage yourself," comments staff member Nicole Polyhronakos.

Dahn Yoga Celebrates the Opening of a New Chicagoland Yoga Studio
Posted: at 6:46 am
Dahn Yoga and Health Centers, Inc., a national health and wellness leader, is pleased to announce the opening of a new Chicagoland location. Dahn Yoga hopes to be an asset to the health and well-being of the Glen Ellyn, Illinois community.
Chicago, Illinois (PRWEB) November 28, 2012
"Seeing the response from so many people was exciting. We didn't even really strategize opening the center next to the college, but soon discovered how many young people, and also teachers and educators are interested in learning holistic health methods, exclaims one of the Chicago area Dahn Yoga Manager, Nate Guadagni. "They just came pouring in the door!"
Proportionally large numbers of young people are joining. Glen Ellyn Center will respond with classes in drumming and martial arts, a dance and other fun activities for the 20-30 year old age group.
"It's been going well and we have about 50 new members in the studio. There's been an unexpected affinity to the practice beyond just a regular yoga class; people have really enjoyed learning the holistic side of Dahn Yoga and have shown a lot of interest in the more unique parts of our practice," explains Guadagni.
"Class sizes are still small, so it's nice and people get a lot of personal attention. The studio is very well designed with interesting contemporary architecture and the whole floor is padded- it's an athletic floor. It's soft and people can use it without even using a yoga mat," Guadagni adds.
Setting up the center and putting the finishing touches on the floor was a true community effort. Instructors from other nearby centers came together and helped out at the open classes for the grand opening. Guadagni comments, "It was really a great community effort, and a really fun experience to have all of the Dahn Yoga instructors together for the Grand Opening!"
There will be specials for new members throughout the holiday season. People can inquire at the center for more details. "Many people like starting Dahn Yoga and exercising before the New Year to get a head start on their New Year's resolutions and their health goals. Also, LifeParticle meditations are a part of every class as well as special meditation classes, sometimes once a week or every other week." Interested people can call the center to learn about one of the many open classes or special classes that may be going on.
Glen Ellyn Dahn Yoga Center is located at 30 South Park Blvd, Glen Ellyn, IL and they can be reached by email at GlenEllyn(at)dahnyoga(dot)com and by telephone at 630-858-2190.

Yoga clothes that won't stretch your wallet

Old Navy fold-over yoga pants and capris start at $15.
By Kara Reinhardt, Cheapism.com
As yoga has stretched American consumers muscles, the apparel industry has stretched their budgets. Yogis and wannabes stock up on everything from figure-hugging jackets to socks with grips on the bottom and individual pockets for each toe. Lululemon, the maker of high-end yoga clothing, expects revenue to top $1.3 billion this year and charges nearly $100 for its popular pants. For less than $20, mass-market retailers sell workout gear thats still a far cry from gym shorts and a free T-shirt from your alma mater.
Below are Cheapisms top picks for affordable yoga clothes.
Of course, the cheapest place to find something to wear to yoga is your own closet. While comfort is paramount, clothing thats too loose may get in the way as you try to get into a pose. A baggy T-shirt or shorts can slide up and reveal your midriff (or more) in a pose such as downward-facing dog or provide an unwitting sight line in a wide-legged pose. Ironically, tighter apparel can prove more modest and allow greater freedom of movement. Clothing that fits closer to the body also makes it easier for a teacher to monitor your form and ensure youre practicing safely.
Pay attention to the length of the pants you choose. Yoga pants often flare at the bottom, so if theyre too long, its easy to get the hem caught underfoot and difficult to see whether your feet are in the proper alignment. That helps explain the appeal of capris and leggings, as well as Old Navys fold-over yoga pants. With their three different inseam lengths, they attract many consumers unwilling to spend time and money on alterations.
Consider not only fit but fabric as well. A pair of leggings that works fine underneath dresses and tunics may not breathe very well and stick when you sweat. Cheapism found that one bargain pair proved practically see-through. Quick-drying fabric, like the material of the Champion Double Dry training tank, promises to keep wearers more comfortable than heavy cotton.

Yoga Essential Part 16
Yoga (Sanskrit, P #257;li: #2351; #2379; #2327;, / #712;j #601; #650; #609; #601;/, yoga) is a commonly known generic term for physical, mental, and spiritual disciplines which originated in ancient India.[1][2] Specifically, yoga is one of the six #257;stika ("orthodox") schools of Hindu philosophy. It is based on the Yoga S #363;tras of Patajali. Various traditions of yoga are found in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism.[3][4][5] Pre--philosophical speculations and diverse ascetic practices of first millennium BCE were systematized into a formal philosophy in early centuries CE by the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.[6] By the turn of the first millennium, Hatha yoga emerged as a prominent tradition of yoga distinct from the Patanjali #39;s Yoga Sutras. While the Yoga Sutras focus on discipline of the mind, Hatha yoga concentrates on health and purity of the body.[7] Hindu monks, beginning with Swami Vivekananda, brought yoga to the West in the late 19th century. In the 1980s, yoga became popular as a physical system of health exercises across the Western world. Many studies have tried to determine the effectiveness of yoga as a complementary intervention for cancer, schizophrenia, asthma and heart patients. In a national survey, long-term yoga practitioners in the United States reported musculo--skeletal and mental health improvements. In Hindu philosophy, yoga is the name of one of the six orthodox (which accept the testimony of Vedas) philosophical schools[69][70] founded by Patanjali.
