Yoga for back pain workshop in Eagle-Vail Saturday
Posted: February 8, 2013 at 8:45 am
On Saturday certified yoga teacher Rachel Delong will guide a workshop to help alleviate back pain through yoga.
Think about how you're sitting right now. Are you slouching forward and feeling pressure in your lower back? Your body is built to be upright and in motion, so it's no wonder that hours of desk work and driving can create painful compression.
Our backs are meant to support us, but we have to keep them healthy, Delong said. Yoga can help to build strength and alignment in the spine, and this upcoming workshop at Revolution Power Yoga will be focusing on those principles.
Delong said the two-hour class will also move students through poses to release tension in the hip flexors and hamstrings areas of the body that can become tight and create discomfort in the lower back.
You're not alone if you experience back pain, she said. But you can do something about it.
The Saturday morning class offers a healthy start to the weekend, and yoga teacher and RPY studio manager Mariah Schuette said it's a great way to be active for a life of longevity.
Come explore the art of listening to your body, Schuette said. Back pain can be debilitating, but through a mindful yoga practice you can find relief.

Eternal Health Yoga boosting wellness in New Albany
Posted: at 8:46 pm
NEW ALBANY A morning of tranquility and peace can be found at Eternal Health Yoga, nestled in downtown New Albany.
Yoga really gives the peace of mind and stillness of the mind. I feel totally focused, said yoga teacher and student Kelly Morris.
Shelli Carpenter, director and owner of the Louisville-based Eternal Health Yoga, opened her second studio on Elm Street in New Albany. However, the demand for yoga in Southern Indiana was clear, so in the fall, she moved the studio to Market Street, right in the hustle and bustle of New Albanys downtown.
We also didnt seem to have as much attention. The space here is bigger too, and we needed more space, she said. I like being down here and being part of the community. I like being among the other business owners, and all of the people who come here. Thats what yoga is. Its the unifying practice, and we felt a little isolated where we were before.
Carpenter said the response from the community has been very positive.
We are still growing and getting the word out. It takes a bit to get the awareness out there, but its been great with businesses such as Jimmys Music Center downstairs and karate next door. We have a variety of other people and businesses around, which is great, said Carpenter.
Morris, who lives in Louisville, is equally excited about the new space on Market Street.
Its beautiful. The sunlight is so warming and happy. Also, New Albany in general feels homey, she said. I like coming over here, and Im excited that I get the opportunity to teach over here. The changes happening in New Albany as a town are exciting.
Eternal Health Yoga in New Albany offers eight classes throughout the week. Carpenter explained that the yoga offered is mainly Hatha Yoga, Yin Yoga and Vinyasa. The Yin Yoga is a Taoist yoga that focuses on joint and connective tissue while Vinyasa is a flowing practice.
All of the styles have the consistent goal to help people feel balanced, strong and happy, said Carpenter.

Yoga's hot
As people seek balance, stretching studios see an increase in attendance.
By Johanna Love, Jackson Hole, Wyo.

From the first bellows breath asana in hot yoga class, a tall fellow in front of me with an infinity tattoo already had sweat dripping off his elbows.
It took my body a few more minutes to get with the program in a recent 12:15 p.m. class at Inversion Yoga. By the fourth of 26 asanas, Eagle Pose, sweat began to trickle and tickle its way down my chest.
By the ninth asana, Triangle Pose, the faint smell of body odors more primal than unpleasant hit my nose. Sweaty guy was the first to capitulate to the 105-degree heat and 50 percent humidity, surrendering to Childs Pose to recover.
Holy crap, whispered the woman next to me.
I hadnt sweated this much since I left Mississippi 16 years ago.
Heat is a huge addition to anybodys practice, instructor Ariel Mann said after the class. These poses are designed for beginners. Its when you combine it with the heat it becomes challenging.

Southtown Yoga Loft brings peace and energy
Posted: at 8:46 pm
Walking up the stairs of Southtown Yoga Loft, assending to a large sunny room featuring hardwood floors and the soft light of paper lanterns, it's hard to believe the bustling streets of downtown are just a few steps away.
Which is precisely what owner Kristal Cuevas intended.
I get chills every time students tell me there's a special energy here, Cuevas said. It's a calm away from the hustle and bustle of downstairs.
Located on South Alamo, the funky new yoga studio offers a boutique along with a large open space for various types of yoga practice, including Ashtanga, vinyasa, karma yoga, prenatal yoga and even kids yoga.
Cuevas began practicing in 2007 and, after a stint in the corporate world, decided to open her own business.
I was inspired by my grandmother, Cuevas said. I saw her as inspiration you don't have to work in the corporate world. I was certified to teach in 2009 and decided to open up my own studio.
After discovering there were no yoga-focused studios in Southtown, Cuevas found her current space after searching through only a few places. It didn't take locals long to flock through the doors and claim a spot on the mat. Many students walk to classes.
I think Southtown Yoga Loft is a great asset to the community, student Leland Stone said, who has been practicing yoga for 10 years. There are multiple classes all day and they are well attended. It's hard to find a studio where the teachers are so good in their own way.
Stone also enjoys the fact that the atmosphere is calm, as he says often isn't the case in other studios. In other classes, the teacher will rush in when the students are waiting. It's very low-key here. The teachers are all happy. I come almost every day.
The popular variety of classes has lead to the studio purchasing a place next door, which will allow for even more classes and a larger boutique space.
