Yoga Big on West Coast, Chiropractors Popular in Midwest

WEDNESDAY, April 16, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- Folks on the West Coast are faithful followers of yoga and meditation. Midwesterners turn to chiropractors or osteopathic doctors for their aches and pains.
And nearly one in every five Americans uses herbal supplements like ginseng, Echinacea, ginkgo biloba and St. John's Wort.
Those are just some of the findings of a new federal government report on complementary and alternative medicine trends in the United States.
The report, derived from national health survey data collected in 2012, shows clear regional trends in the way Americans choose to use complementary medicine, said report co-author Tainya Clarke.
"It is important to continue to monitor the use of these complementary health approaches among the U.S. population, and this is the most recent national data out there," said Clarke, a service fellow with the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
"By highlighting regional differences, we can stimulate further research and help people make informed decisions," she said.
After looking at data on almost 35,000 people across the country, the researchers found that:
In general, people living in southern and Mid-Atlantic states have less use for complementary or alternative medicine, the researchers found.
There was one notable exception, however -- in all parts of the country, large numbers of people appear to be using herbal dietary supplements.

All the hottest legs in the world -- whether they belong to Deepika Padukone or Madonna -- can be tracked back to yoga practice.
Yoga is by far the best way to tone up the legs without injuring yourself, as you can with other such activity.
The sister practices -- like Pilates -- have borrowed heavily from yoga. So it does not matter what you do -- including martial arts like Muay Thai.
Ultimately, it all comes back to the basics of yoga. This explains why yoga is the favourite activity of the worlds most beautiful people.
For yoga to work, you must practice daily. At first, attempt the poses for a short duration. But the time for each pose, if held static, must be regularly increased.
If doing the pose dynamically, the number of repeats in a pose must also rise dramatically. To tone up the legs, the muscles in the legs must be pushed to the point of fatigue. Lackadaisical practice will not serve here.
All poses are also very safe for the knees. This cannot be said of most other activities.
So, the trick is to work the pose in both methods -- statically and dynamically -- so different textures of muscle fibres are developed. This will help firm the skin.
At least 20 minutes of the entire yoga practice must be dedicated to just leg raises, as listed below.

Upset by the many feminine yoga mats and accessories available today, one male yogi has created a line of brogamats to make men feel more comfortable about striking a downward dog.
Dan Abramson, a San Francisco-based entrepreneur, has issued a line of mat bags that resemble a quiver of arrows, a burrito, and a wooden log.
Available at Urban Outfitters, as well as his own site for $35, Mr Abramsons designs are meant to counteract the many pink and floral-pringted mat bags sold at stores like Lululemon nationwide.

Many looks: This quiver of arrows design was Mr Abramson's first concept, which has since expanded into a full line of yoga looks
Mr Abramsons introduction to yoga came when he began taking vinyasa flow classes to help recover from a back injury.
It was not long before he discovered that he was often only one of few men in the asana room.
