Yoga master favours Halifax

FOLLOW Bruce Springsteen, you get to go to Moncton. Follow Manju Pattabhi Jois, you get to go to Maui.
A rock star in the yoga world, Jois spends four or five months each year travelling the globe, instructing devotees in Ashtanga, a branch of yoga created by his father in India. Possessing strength and suppleness that belies the fact hes about to turn 70, Jois can stand on his head as soon as he gets out of bed in the morning.
For the 22 students that came to Ashtanga Halifax this week from all over the province as well as Montreal, Labrador and Switzerland to learn from him, its an amazing experience.
He is like the source, said Sarah MacKeigan of Halifax, whos been a yoga teacher for seven years.
Ive trained with him twice before, once in Florida and once in Maui, and hes just incredible. Hes not a big man, hes shorter than I am, but physically hes very strong, and energetically hes amazing to be around. You feel better being around him.
Jody Manley, the owner of Ashtanga Halifax and the first Ashtanga teacher in Atlantic Canada, went to Chicago to train with Jois in 2009 and has since followed him to Maui and Berlin. It took her two years to arrange for Jois to make the visit to Nova Scotia where, he said, the people are warmer than the weather.
Manley said having Jois come to Halifax is the pinnacle of her career as a yoga teacher.
When he finally agreed to come, it was an amazing thing to share his teachings with my students, said Manley, whos been an instructor for 15 years.
Manju has really broadened me as a teacher in my own practice, well beyond the physical aspects. He has taught me chanting and breathing exercises, and I feel I am teaching now in a much more traditional way.
Theres so much yoga out there, and so many styles and forms, so to bring that type of teaching to our students at Ashtanga Halifax is an honour for me.

Yoga competitors display inner stillness
Posted: at 10:45 am
MONTREAL You could have heard a pin drop at the first annual Quebec Hatha Yoga championships in Town of Mount Royal on Saturday not because the church hall was empty, but out of deference to the 13 competitors.
They had three minutes apiece to impress the judges by flexing, contorting and immobilizing their bodies in ways unimaginable and, occasionally, a bit frightening to people who dont own a yoga mat.
And the more than 100 spectators helped them find their inner stillness with respectful silence.
Mike DAbate, a 32-year-old teacher from LaSalle, and Rosalie Abbey, an 18-year-old environment student at McGill University, emerged as the first provincial Hatha Yoga champions, and will represent Quebec at the national championships in Vancouver at the end of the month.
You had to like DAbates chances of capturing the mens division Saturday.
He was the only entrant.
But Judge Brad Cowell of Vancouver said DAbate did a lot more than win by default.
He scored very well. He has a very good shot for the Canadian championship, Cowell said.
DAbate said he started doing yoga a couple of years ago at the urging of a female friend who is now a yoga instructor.
It didnt bother him to be one of the few men doing it, he said. Im used to it. In the elementary schools where I teach, there are usually no more than one or two men.

Yoga -loving men now have their own mat

As more men are turned on to yoga, thanks in part to nudging from their girlfriends and the yoga-inspired moves in programs like P90X, retailers are rolling out new mats and gear tailored just for them. Plus celebrities are helping to lead the pack -- such as Matthew McConaughey, who regularly strikes a pose on the beach, and Russell Brand, who is often seen toting his yoga mat. Even David Beckham has reportedly credited Bikram yoga with helping him recover from an Achilles tendon injury. Also, blog Well + Good NYC reports that "no-girls-allowed" yoga classes are popping up in New York City.
To meet the demand, Yoga Jack recently launched its line of extra-thick black and olive green mats in longer sizes 72 inches (182 cm) rather than the standard 68 (173 cm). Plus for sweaty dudes, the mat features a "proprietary non-slip surface," plus all that extra thickness means larger feet won't rip the mat to pieces in a few months. Price is US$69 (RM211), available online internationally. For US$19, you can take along a more "masculine" yoga bag, in black.
Based in San Francisco and Boston, the company was founded by 32-year-old father of two Jahoan Jamili, who told New York Daily News that he was persuaded to try yoga by his wife. "I gotta be honest yoga is a little intimidating for guys at first," Jamali said. "I went out to buy a cheap mat and I couldn't find anything for me. I'm not a New Age guy; I'm a standard average Joe. Guess what, I don't want a floral print mat." AFP-Relaxnews

Lululemon exec out after yoga pants fiasco

Lululemon's head of products is out after last month's see-through yoga pants fiasco.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney)
Vancouver-based Lululemon Athletica (LULU)said Wednesday that Sheree Waterson, its chief product officer, will step down on April 15 after five years at the company.
Waterson's exit comes quickly on the heels of the company's large recall of Lululemon's popular black yoga pants last month.
The pants were recalled because they were unintentionally see-through. The defective product represented 17% of all women's yoga pants sold in Lululemon stores, and prompted a shortage of the pants.
Last month, the retailer warned that the recall would significantly hurt its financial results. The company, expected to report first-quarter results in June, said same-store sales are projected to increase 5% to 8% in the period, down from its earlier forecast for a gain of 11%.
"We appreciate the many contributions that Sheree made during her time with Lululemon, particularly in the area of design," Lululemon's CEO Christine Day, said in a statement.

Prenatal Yoga : What You Should Know
Posted: at 4:48 am
Expecting? Congratulations! Load up on water, get lots of sleep, take advantage of stretchy pants and don't forget to exercise. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that pregnant women work out for at least 30 minutes on most, if not all days, to reap a laundry list of benefits, including improved mood, sleep and posture, as well as increased energy, muscle tone, strength and endurance. Don't forget about how exercise may prevent and treat gestational diabetes, and perhaps help subdue the little joys of pregnancy, such as backaches, constipation, bloating and swelling. Plus, fit moms typically have an easier time coping with labor and getting back in shape afterward.
Yoga specialized for pregnant women--typically called prenatal yoga--is an excellent, low-impact exercise option, especially for moms who are reluctant to haul baby and belly onto the treadmill.
Why prenatal yoga?
"It makes you stronger all over, and that's not only preparing you for the labor and delivery, but also for when you're going to be carrying that baby around," says Kahlil Kuykendall, a certified prenatal yoga teacher at Capitol Hill Yoga in Washington, D.C. Breathing--lots of long inhales and exhales--is a major focus in prenatal yoga. "It's breathing in that final hour, when the baby is descending, where it all comes together," Kuykendall says, "You need strength from the yoga postures, but it's that breathing that'll help to relax the mind and nervous system."
In a way, the breathing and relaxation techniques of prenatal yoga are all practice for labor, when they can "slow the heart rate, clear the mind and relax the body," says Karen Prior, a registered prenatal yoga teacher in Oklahoma City and creator of the Mamaste Yoga program. That practice, along with strengthening postures, can give confidence to women, especially those in their first pregnancies.
By attending a prenatal yoga class in person, expecting mothers can tack on another benefit: friends. "They're all of a sudden in a community with women who are making the same choices and lifestyle changes that they are," Prior says. "And they become a support group for each other as their new families are forming." The most important bond pregnant women make via prenatal yoga? The one they form with their babies. "We remind [women] to take time and connect with their babies through meditation and breath, and touch of the belly," Prior says.
Is it safe?
Absolutely, if you do your homework first. The ACOG recommends that women receive a clinical physical evaluation before beginning a program. They should also seek instructors trained specifically in prenatal yoga. Prior suggests scoping out teachers' credentials via the Yoga Alliance website. First, she says, look for registered prenatal yoga teachers--those who have at least 100 hours of specialty instruction in pregnancy yoga. There aren't many of these teachers available, so if you can't find one, next seek a certified prenatal teacher, which means she is well-trained, but with fewer hours under her belt. And finally, if these two types of instructors aren't an option, find a teacher with at least some training in yoga contraindications during pregnancy. Not sure where your prospective instructor stands? Call the studio, or meet with her ahead of time. Prior strongly suggests that women who are pregnant for the first time, new to yoga or both attend a class in-person.
If there are simply no prenatal yoga instructors around, specialized books, DVDs and podcasts are available. "The most important thing is listening to your body and doing what feels right," Prior says.
Is it for me?
