Embody your anatomy through Eagle-Vail yoga workshop

Posted: at 6:44 pm

without comments

EAGLE-VAIL Starting April 24, certified yoga teacher Brooke Hamblet will lead a series of anatomy workshops at Revolution Power Yoga for yoga students and teachers.

Anatomy classes are not all what they used to be. There is only so much you can learn from coloring a textbook and memorizing lengthy science terms. Form and function of the human body can be highlighted in a lecture, but to dig a little deeper is to move through each lesson with a life-long teaching tool: your body.

Certified yoga teacher Brooke Hamblet, visiting from her studio, Indigo Yoga Texas, in Fort Worth, will lead workshops at Revolution Power Yoga for anyone who is looking to embody their anatomy.

These workshops will leave students with solid, basic and intelligent concepts about how anatomy applies in yoga, said Rachel Nelson, studio co-owner and certified yoga teacher. You will learn to embody yoga anatomy through practice, lecture and fun.

Nelson said the workshops are open to everyone, and current yoga teachers can use them as an investment towards teaching, as well as Yoga Alliance continuing education credits.

Series schedule

April 24, 7:30 to 9 p.m.

Gain a basic working knowledge of all body systems. Gain a detailed working knowledge of main applicable systems and how they relate to practicing yoga. Introduction to True North Alignment. Learn common injury prevention and rehabilitation techniques.

Cost: $65.

April 26, 6 to 9 p.m.

Yoga can cause pain, strain to athletes

Posted: at 6:44 pm

ORLANDO, Fla. -

Triathletes, marathoners and exercise fanatics all flock to yoga for relaxation and pain relief.

But recent research shows that many, especially men, are ending up with muscle strain and injury from the yoga.

David Harrington is one of them.

Active is an understatement when describing Harrington. His friends even joke that he is superhuman.

Harrington is an accomplished runner whose completed countless marathons, half-marathons, a triathlon and even plays softball. On top of all of his running, he does strength training at a gym and began going to yoga classes regularly about six months ago.

"I was very misinformed when it came to yoga," said Harrington, "I thought it was just a hot room with a bunch of people who just kind of stretched."

His lack of knowledge going into the practice coupled with a competitive edge could be the cause of a recent injury.

Harrington said he pulled his hamstring after going about his movements a little haphazardly. The injury was minor enough that it healed with rest and recovery, but it kept him from running for a few weeks.

"Triathletes and marathoners are really good at hiding their competitiveness. They are used to being under pressure and appearing calm," said Theresa Curameng who owns and instructs yoga at College Park Yoga with her husband Calvin.

Find local yoga classes with Om Finder for iOS

Posted: at 6:44 pm

without comments

This free app makes it a snap to locate nearby yoga action, and even invite friends to join your class.

Free app Om Finder locates many (though not all) the yoga classes in your area.

I think most people who have tried yoga would agree: it's a great way to improve flexibility and blood flow, increase stamina and strength, and even reduce back and muscle pain.

OK, but how can you find nearby classes, especially if you're traveling or you've just moved to a new town?

Yep: there's an app for that. Om Finder for iOS locates nearby classes, studios, and instructors wherever you happen to be in the world. It needs a few tweaks, but it's definitely a handy tool for the om-minded.

After agreeing to let the app use your location, you'll see a map with a Find Class button in the center. Tap it and Om Finder lists all the classes for the current day. You can tap left/right arrows to cycle the day, but you can't choose a specific day from a pop-up calendar.

What's more, the class list is sorted by time, from soonest to latest. That's fine, but the app definitely needs the option of sorting by distance. What's more, all distances are listed in kilometers (developer Lululemon Athletica is based in Canada); those of us living in the U.S. would welcome a toggle for miles.

The good news is that you can filter the results by class, teacher, or studio, and in fact Om Finder has tabs that let you switch between listings for those very categories. But the filter is great if you want to limit the results to, say, hot-yoga classes, or a specific instructor.

For any given class, you can tap through to get the name of the studio and teacher, the address (with a map, natch), an add-to-calendar button, and share/invite options. (You'll need to register for an account or connect to Facebook if you want profile, sharing, and friend features.)

I like that Om Finder has its own Schedule page so you can see upcoming classes you're planning to attend, without having to switch over to the Calendar app. Also, the Friends tab helps you keep track of classes any friends might be attending (and vice versa).

Yoga Courses Offered by the Sivananda Yoga Organization in Latin America in 2013

Posted: at 7:45 am

without comments

The Yoga courses are offered in a calm environment, allowing visitors to enjoy the benefits of Yoga, meditation, breathing exercices, and healthy vegetarian food, among others.

Miami, FL (PRWEB) April 15, 2013

The Yoga Teacher's Training Course helps graduates to deepen their spiritual practice and their study of Hatha yoga, Vedanta philosophy, Raja yoga, anatomy and Sanskrit. The advanced class gives students an additional chance to practice under guidance in a supportive atmosphere, which provides many with a boost of energy and clarity.

In the the Yoga vacations (vacaciones de Yoga Colombia ), students will learn about five principles that constitute the essence of the teachings of the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers. To clarify the science of Yoga and make it accessible to the majority of seekers, Swami Vishnu-devananda extracted its essence and presented it in universal principles for physical and mental health as well as spiritual growth.

1. Proper Exercise (Asanas)

The physical body is meant to move and exercise. If the lifestyle does not provide natural motion of muscles and joints, then disease and great discomfort will ensue with time. Proper exercise should be pleasant to the practitioner while beneficial to the body, mind and spiritual life.

2. Proper Breathing (Pranayama california)

Yoga teaches how to use the lungs to their maximum capacity and how to control the breath. Proper breathing should be deep, slow and rhythmical. This increases vitality and mental clarity.

3. Proper Relaxation (Savasana)

Long before the invention of cars, planes, telephones, computers, freeways and other modern triggers of stress, the Rishis (sages or seers) and Yogis of yore devised very powerful techniques of deep relaxation. As a matter of fact, many modern stress-management and relaxation methods borrow heavily from this tradition. By relaxing deeply all the muscles the Yogi can thoroughly rejuvenate his nervous system and attain a deep sense of inner peace.
