In January 2006, Paula Bortolotto, an avid runner, found herself sidelined with a hip injury and unable to train for an upcoming marathon. Wanting to maintain her fitness level, she turned to yoga and loved it so much that she soon became an instructor. Not only did her hip pain soon disappear, but she began to experience yogas other health benefits more energy and better sleep habits, just to name a few.
In 2011, she opened the Anahata Yoga Center in Mason and has never looked back. Now experienced and certified in several different styles of yoga, she shares her knowledge with every student who walks through the doors of her studio.
What the business does: Anahata Yoga Center is a place for holistic health, primarily using Yoga asana [postures/positions] techniques, explained Bortolotto. We have the areas only aerial Yoga using hammocks, called BAT yoga, where the body is suspended upside down using parachute type fabric.
The studio, located at 770 Reading Road, Suite D in Mason, next to Ace Hardware, features 2600 square feet of space, complete with lots of natural light, cork flooring, and geometric murals. Classes, taught by highly trained instructors with ample experience in yoga therapy, include yoga for beginners, family yoga, vinyasa alignment, gentle yoga flow, yoga for athletes, and BAT yoga. There are also various workshops offered throughout the year. The center also has a Registered Yoga Alliance Teacher Trainee Yoga Program that is currently underway, and will start again in the early fall.
How the business started: Bortolotto feels that yoga and the benefits therein, truly changed her life for the better. With yoga in my life, I feel the best I have ever felt. I have taught yoga all over the Cincinnati area and in 2011 found the perfect property where I opened Anahata Yoga Center, said Bortolotto. My passion is to share all of what yoga has to offer, with each and every student who walks through my doors.
The word Anahata is a Sanskrit word for a wheel of energy located at your heart.
Recent developments: Now until the end of May we are having unlimited yoga classes, including BAT yoga, for $59.00 a month, said Bortolotto. We also are running a sale of health products, books, CDs and BAT yoga hammocks, where you can suspend at home; now until the end of April.

WASHINGTON: If yoga is the practice of quieting the mind, as Patanjali, chronicler of the spiritual quest said, its practitioners couldn't have picked a better place than New York City's Times' Square to put the aphorism to test.
Some 16,000 yoga aficionados turned up at what is arguably the world's glitziest - if not busiest - crossroads to stretch America's acceptance of the great Indian export, amid continued misgivings in conservative circles about its religious content.
The hum of Om rose above the everyday wailing of police sirens and honking of rude taxis as New Yorkers ushered in summer solstice with open-air yogabhyas from sunrise to sundown on the longest day of the year.
It wasn't exactly a flash mob. What began as a three-person exercise a decade ago has now grown into a thousands-strong annual event that celebrates ''mind over madness.'' The organizers, led by Times Square Alliance, say it is a pushback against the hectic lifestyle in the world's most vibrant city.
It is also the world's most diverse and multicultural city that embraces universal values with such ease that no one raised a peep about the iconic square being shut down to traffic for the yoga gig. Curious foreign tourists milled around to see thousands of Americans stretch to instructions from professional teachers, the entire spectacle flanked by anachronistic eateries such as McDonald's and Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, with neon signs of Spiderman and Buzz Lightyear flashing down.
Coming on the heels of the Obama White House also encouraging yoga with its annual Yoga Garden event during Easter, the growing acceptance and popularity of the ancient Indian practice is marred only by occasional bouts of pique by conservatives who think it is fronting for Hinduism sneaking into America through the back door.
In California, there is an ongoing court case against a school district that established a yoga program with a $ 500,000 grant from the K Pattabhi Jois Foundation, aimed at helping elementary schools students focus on studies, keep calm, and contain aggressive behavior.
But some parents have gone to court, maintaining that the program has a religious connection and violates the line between church and state. Attorneys for the parents have charged that students have been made ''spiritual guinea pigs'' and were encouraged to greet each other with ''Namaste, a religiously laden Hinduism greeting.''

At 6:15 a.m., with the streets blinking awake, Eden Silverstein and Jacki Silva groggily made their way up to the 2000 block of Walnut Street. Slipping through an obscure door, they climbed stairs to a room where they spent the next hour wringing out their bodies to clear their heads.
Across the city, throughout the day and well past dark, many others would make similar pilgrimages.
The Philadelphia yogis are everywhere lately and steadily gaining in numbers. They are young, mostly, thin, mostly, and calm, relatively - their rolled mats sheathed in hemp, canvas, or Lululemon Namaste Mesh, slung over shoulders, as they wend their way through the city's pandemonium.
This spring, Forbes Magazine placed Philadelphia third in the nation on the list of most yoga-friendly cities - only a breath of fire behind the far more Zen metropoli of San Francisco and Seattle.
The ranking was based on data collected by GfK MRI, a New York-based consumer marketing firm that surveyed 205 markets to determine the popularity of yoga in each. The survey found Philadelphians 42 percent more likely to do yoga than the general population.
"The yoga trend is really growing," said Silverstein, a real estate agent in her 30s. She was talked into trying an early-morning class at Philly Power Yoga with her colleague Silva, who goes two or three times a week.
It is nearly impossible to quantify how many places offer yoga in the region, said Mary Fetterman, who runs Philadelphia Area Yoga, a website listing area studios.
Teachers give lessons in their homes. Classes take place in YMCAs, community centers, churches, the Art Museum steps, and practically every gym, where students practice the pigeon pose a few yards from grunters heaving 30-pound kettle bells.

While yoga is intended to quiet the mind and reveal strength, peace, and sanctuary within, it has become a large and lucrative capitalist enterprise.
Since 2008, national spending on yoga classes, equipment, clothing, retreats, and advertising has nearly doubled, reaching an estimated $10.3 billion in 2012. An estimated 20.4 million Americans practice yoga, up 29 percent in five years.
"The flashy kind of yoga studios like you have now didn't exist when I started," said Joan White, 70, the doyenne of Philadelphia yoga. "Yoga got taken over by businesspeople."
Despite the dramatic growth, yoga teachers as a group struggle to make a living. Classes generally cost about $15, and studios frequently offer reduced rates. At best, most teachers receive half the fees paid by their students.
Running a successful studio is a constant challenge, says Theresa Conroy, owner of Yoga on the Ridge in Andorra.
"It's really difficult to hold on to good teachers, to pay them enough, to market the studio enough," says Conroy, 51, a former journalist who started teaching in 2005 and opened her studio three years later.
Part of the problem, Conroy says, is that yoga is not meant to be a capitalist venture. Even studio owners sometimes have trouble reconciling the lofty idealism of yogic culture and the practical demands of the bottom line.
"A lot of teachers feel embarrassed charging for what they do," she said, recounting how she once returned from vacation to find a curious drop in income because "my teachers had been letting their students take classes for free."
Many studios are trying to create their own niche.
