New Yoga with a twist
Posted: at 4:42 am
JUPITER, Fla. - Kim Depasquale is a yoga instructor who would rather call herself a fun facilitator, or director of fun.
She's been doing yoga for some time and wanted to take it to the next level. on the water!
That has been turning a lot of heads in Jupiter.
Kim first pioneered the idea of replacing the yoga mat with a stand up paddleboard in Orlando.
"We were doing yoga on the lakes. I moved here, it was a little more challenging to do it on the ocean and Intracoastal, but found a bunch of crazy yogis to come help and inspire with some amazing teachers it's just expanded and grown."
Some of the poses can be quite difficult, but there are easier ones to learn.
"It's not that hard, everybody can do itand I encourage everybody to come out and try it."
For people who take Kim's class like Jamie Rollins, it's a perfect fit for South Florida.
"Being here in sunny South Florida you have all the opportunity to practice yoga outdoors," Rollins says. "Water just really calms me down. There's a healing and calming property of the water that just really resonates with me."
Yoga has been known to clear the mind and heal the body.

Get a Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga convertible laptop for $379.99
Posted: at 4:42 am
Listing for $649 just a few months ago, this Windows RT-powered hybrid looks a lot more appealing at this price.
The IdeaPad Yoga 11 can stand up for itself, not a bad feature in a tablet that has a home in, say, a kitchen.
Windows RT: ugh, right?
It kind of depends. Windows RT on a laptop or tablet priced at $650 is definitely worthy of groans, but a hybrid priced at $380? That's something altogether different.
For a limited time, and while supplies last, Best Buy has the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 11.6-inch convertible laptop for $379.99 shipped, plus sales tax where applicable.
As you may recall, the Yoga made waves earlier this year as one of the first Windows RT hybrid systems, a laptop-style machine with a hinged touch-screen that can twist into a variety of configurations (hence the "Yoga" moniker). In fact, it can swing a full 360 degrees around behind the screen, effectively transmogrifying into a large tablet.
Neat, right? But at $649, the price tag back in March, most of us threw up into our mouths a little. Thankfully, as time marches on, overpriced (and underselling) products tend to see major cuts, at which point they're worth re-evaluating.
Obviously if you want a full-bore Windows 8 laptop, look elsewhere. Windows RT restricts you to the Metro (i.e., tiled) interface and whatever apps you can find to run there. The good news is that Microsoft Office 2013 is already among them (and it's bundled here), and at this point you can find most of the heavy-hitter apps (Evernote, Netflix, and so on) in the ol' app store.
I do recommend checking out CNET's review of the IdeaPad Yoga, which concluded with an overall 7.0 rating and found it "a great laptop alternative" -- but took issue with the bulk factor when using the Yoga as a tablet.
And the smattering of user reviews on Best Buy's product page average out to only 3.1 stars, though I suspect most of those buyers paid a higher price for the system. Ultimately, you'll have to decide if $379.99 is a good deal on a Windows RT-powered tablet with a built-in keyboard. Or a Windows RT-powered laptop that doubles as a tablet. Given that you could easily pay that much for a non-touch-screen laptop alone, I think it's worth some consideration.

Kenyan yoga strikes a pose
Posted: at 4:42 am
NAIROBI, Kenya (CNN) -
There he stands, Mount Kilimanjaro in the background, striking a pose on a purple mat, bathed in the light of dawn. Breathing. Stretching. Opening up his mind -- a group of young children following and copying his every move.
Watching a Maasai warrior practice yoga is a rare sight, but Jacob Parit is not only a warrior in one of Africa's best-known tribes, he's also an instructor with the Africa Yoga Project.
"Yoga will be part of Maasai tradition because the young need to be strong warriors," Parit says. "It is a peaceful thing and it brings people together."
Originating in India, yoga is practiced globally, and is now spreading across Kenya. And it's not only about the practice -- here, yoga is transforming lives, contributing positively to communities and creating jobs.
The catalyst for this yoga boom in Kenya is the Africa Yoga Project. Started in 2007, the non-profit organization is the brainchild of American Paige Elenson.
"I have been teaching Baptiste Power Yoga for about 15 years and I was on a family vacation here in Kenya in 2006. I saw a group of youth doing handstands. I got out of the car and did handstands with them. That day changed my life," explains Elenson, who saw yoga as a way to create jobs for young people in Kenya.
It started as an experiment, mainly in the city slums, to see if it could bring about positive changes and help people to cope with their lives.
Today, the Africa Yoga Projects says it has 71 educated and employed yoga teachers, who earn a living wage. It offers more than 300 free classes every week that are serving around 5,000 people. The project is funded by volunteers and donors and is bringing together people from all walks of life.
Relaxing future warriors
