Yoga Centre classes focus on physical fitness

12/19/2013 - West Side Leader
The five-year-old studio, owned by John Poleondakis and located at 2830 Copley Road in Copley Commons, was recently expanded to add 1,000 square feet more.
Poleondakis said Iyengar yoga focuses on the in-depth study of asanas (posture) and pranayama (breath control). It differs from traditional yoga in three areas: technique, or making fine adjustments in the alignment of postures and breathing; sequencing, or the order of the postures and breathing; and the length of time spent in each posture.
The yoga taught at the Centre is more like hatha yoga instead of the more typical flowing yoga that continues to move from one posture to the next, he said. We move at a slower pace and we use tools. We also take a more physical approach rather than a spiritual or meditative one in our yoga classes.
Poleondakis said yoga taught at the studio uses items such as blocks, the wall, bolsters, straps and blankets to assist participants in attaining and holding certain postures.
These props can help participants who have mobility issues, he said. They can help overcome or stabilize a physical limitation.
Poleondakis said many people believe yoga is only for those who are flexible, but he stressed increasing and improving flexibility is what the practice of yoga is for.
Other benefits include improvements to balance and strength and overcoming physical limitations, he added.
Yoga is for both the young and old, said Poleondakis. Our yoga here is more about physical fitness, but there is also a relaxation component.
The practice of Iyengar yoga often will result in eliminating aches and pains and improving posture, but it also can be used to treat many ailments, including extremely serious medical conditions, under the supervision of a suitably experienced teacher, according to Poleondakis.

Newtown Athletic Club hosts winter solstice celebration with 12 hours of yoga
Posted: at 9:45 am
NEWTOWN- Yoga is one of the many types of group exercise classes that the Newtown Athletic Club offers. Twice a year, the Mind/Body program (which includes all Pilates and Yoga classes that the NAC offers) holds an all day winter or summer solstice celebration.
Winter solstice is the shortest day of the year and is celebrated by many cultures because it marks the shortest day and longest night of the year. Yoga studios everywhere gather to welcome back the light and set high intentions for the New Year, typically with 108 sun salutations.
This year is no different. On Dec. 21, the Newtown Athletic Club will host 12 hours of Yoga from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Classes include Power Solstice, Yoga for Newbies, Vinyasa & Balancing, Yoga Nidra, Yin Yoga, Chanting and Meditation, Twists, Astrological Vinyasa and 108 Sun Salutations.
A special Ayurveda class will be held at noon where participants learn how to eat to keep their Doshaor energy in balance. Food for Ayurveda will be provided by the NACafe. All classes are available to beginners as well as advanced students.
As its gift to the community, the event is free for NAC members and guests. Guests must live within a 10 mile radius of the NAC and must be at least 24 years of age. The NAC asks that guests come in 15 minutes early to check-in at membership services with a current drivers license. The Winter Solstice class schedule can be found on http://www.newtownathletic.com
Newtown Athletic Club is a comprehensive family oriented health and fitness facility in Bucks County which offers over 300,000 square feet of sports and fitness amenities. The various youth programs and adult offerings make it a place for anyone. Not just a gym, a lifestyle. The NAC is located at 120 Pheasant Run, Newtown.

Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro Review: One Step Forward…
Posted: at 9:45 am
Lenovo's latest convertible laptop is thinner, lighter and sometimes more frustrating.
Lenovos been no stranger to experimentation with Windows 8, putting out lots of touchscreen devices that bridge the gap between laptop and tablet. But none have been as conventional, or as practical, as the Yoga.
At a glance, the Yoga looks like a regular laptop. The difference is that you can fold the screen all the way around until it becomes a tablet. Its still a notebook PC above all, but at least you can get the keyboard out of the way when you just want to use the touchscreen.
The Yoga 2 Pro is an evolution of last years IdeaPad Yoga 13. It has a thinner and lighter chassis, measuring 0.61 inches thick and weighing just over 3 pounds, and the screen resolution has ballooned to 3200-by-1800. The Yoga 2 Pro also uses Intels fourth-generation Core processors, which are more power-efficient than last years chips. The basic configuration, which has a Core i3 processor, 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of solid state storage, lists for $1,050, though Lenovo is currently offering a $100 discount through its website.
The original Yoga 13 was a great laptop, with a couple drawbacks: The battery life was too weak, and the design felt a little too bulky, especially for tablet use. Unfortunately, the Yoga 2 Pro introduces some new frustrations while failing to fix the shortcomings of its predecessor. Its still a fine laptop, but it could have been so much better.
Jared Newman for TIME
Lets start with that 3200-by-1800 display. Its incredible on paper, but the real-world benefit of having quadruple the pixels is hard to notice at normal viewing distances. I was never put off by the original Yogas resolution, and a mere boost to 1080p probably would have been enough to soothe any videophiles.
Instead, Lenovo went way overboard with screen resolution, and paid a dear price: Battery life in the Yoga 2 Pro isnt significantly improved over last years model. In a typical work routine of writing, reading and researching on the web, I got about six hours of battery life at 50-percent brightness. Thats not bad for a laptop, and its not drastically worse than what I get from Microsofts Surface Pro 2, but lower screen resolutions tend to require less power. Its sad to think about what might have been had Lenovo practiced some restraint.
The reduced weight and thickness are more obvious improvements. The new Yoga is better for toting around in a laptop bag, and the thinner design carries itself quite well. Theres a slight taper around the edges of the base, so in laptop mode the Yoga looks even svelter than it actually is.
