Travel: Exhibit examines rich visual history of yoga

A few visuals may spring to mind when conjuring images of yoga: fashionable clothes. Lithe, muscular females. Maybe even a sweaty guy clad in a Speedo.

Not so at the Smithsonian exhibit Yoga: The Art of Transformation, where museum-goers are treated to a tour that goes back centuries to India and the roots of the spiritual and physical practice.

As part of this first museum exhibit of yogas visual history, tour-goers can put yoga in context and participate in a class in the gallery, complete with mats, blocks and a knowledgeable instructor. Speedo-type attire optional.

The exhibit is on display through Jan. 26 at the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, which, with the Freer Gallery of Art, forms the Smithsonian Institutions national museums of Asian art. The installation explores the diverse meanings of yoga, beginning with its earliest roots.

A recent docent-led tour began with an examination of a trio of life-size yogini (pronounced by the docent as YO-guinea) goddesses from a south Indian temple. The sculptures portray fierce female forms holding weapons and shields and wrapped in snakes, calling to mind the spirit of the Warrior poses performed in modern studios.

The exhibit features more than 130 objects that portray yoga as transcending boundaries of gender and religion, with a nearly equal representation of male and female figures. The exhibit also presents paintings, sculptures and manuscripts that illustrate yogas broad religious reach, with roots in Jain, Buddhist, Sufi and Hindu traditions.

Some images from the 15th century depict yogis practicing on mats made from tiger skins, a precursor to the rubber variety that is ubiquitous today. Animal skins, while a more biodegradable option, would not likely be welcome at a modern studio.

Gallery viewers can move through the centuries to witness depictions of the yogic arts as perceived by colonial and early photographers. Photos, posters and even films illustrate the ways in which yogis became despised in the 19th century and how yoga was transformed in early 20th-century India as a democratic practice open to all.

In one room, photographs from the 19th century depict exoticized images of yogis across the globe, often featuring painted jungle backdrops and grass mats to satisfy a transnational fascination with views of foreign lands and people.

The exhibit is free, but for the more adventurous museum-goer, the $15 Yoga in the Galleries is worth checking out. After an approximately 45-minute docent-led tour, a yoga teacher leads 15 participants through a yoga sequence in a roped-off area of the gallery.

The art of yoga

A 2012 survey by Yoga Journal found that some 20 million adult Americans say they do yoga, up from 15.8 million in 2008. CBS News

Just five days in, our New Year's resolutions are still relatively fresh, including those that have to do with good health and exercise. And when it comes to exercise, more and more Americans are taking up one that can fairly be described as a real stretch, as Rita Braver reports in our Cover Story:

Yoga: it's practiced by millions of Americans who credit it with bringing them better health, physical fitness, and serenity.

And then there are those who see it differently . . .

"How many of you would like to stay here for an hour and twist yourself into agonizing positions, ultimately wrapping your leg around your head?" Alec Baldwin asked a crowd. "How many of you would rather come with me to the movies and eat a pizza?"

Yes, that's Alec Baldwin, the famously un-serene bad boy, who not long ago made headlines, again, when he got into an ugly scuffle with a photographer staking out his family.

When he spoke with Braver, just before that incident, he made no secret of the fact that his main interest in yoga isn't anger management; it's that his wife Hilaria is an instructor.

"When I came to her class the first time and watched her teach her class, all I wanted to do was, like, pour a glass of scotch and light a cigarette and just say, 'This is never happening,'" Baldwin said.

But Baldwin was there -- at least in body -- when his wife taught an unusual class right in the Smithsonian's Sackler Gallery in Washington, amid priceless works of art.

Hilaria Baldwin leads a yoga class at the Sackler Gallery in Washington's Smithsonian Institution.

Residents learn relaxation, health tips at 'Happiness Yoga'

Yoga Master Andres Josephs guided a group of baby boomers in several yoga poses during a Happiness Yoga session at Kiwanis Recreation Center on Saturday morning.

The simple yoga movements help revitalize one's life and increase energy, Josephs told the group.

Yoga unites the body, mind and soul, he said, and the program makes people aware of the things that bring about an unbalance.

"We show them how to restore the balance so that they can have health and wellness," Josephs said. "Happiness comes when you find equal balance in body, mind and spirit."

For the past three years, Sid Gautam, a former Methodist University professor, has offered the Happiness Yoga program. The goal, he said, is to help people tap into happiness. The free program is sponsored by the Society to Educate People.

"The whole program is about exploring the happiness within you," said Gautam. "It is so easy, and it is all around you."

Gautam enlists the help of local physicians and experts to educate the community about various health issues, such as overeating, developing healthy habits, sinus functions and longevity. Dr. Sanjay Garg, a local rheumatologist, shared information about osteoarthritis during this month's session.

Saturday's session also focused on the "sound of silence," or setting aside two minutes each day for silence and meditation.

"Remember, we are living in a digitally distracting world," Gautam said.

Gautam encouraged the group to follow three simple steps - find a quiet spot; set aside two minutes at the same time each day; and stick to it. During those two minutes, the mind must be blank, he said.
