Jerry Bergonzi: Two More DVDs from the Master Educator
Posted: January 17, 2014 at 3:49 pm
DVD/Video/Film Reviews There are plenty of stellar musicians who can't teach and plenty of fine educators who lack the skills or know-how to play at a top-tier level. There aren't a lot of internationally acclaimed musicians who are also viewed the world over as exceptional teachers; saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi is one of the few.
Bergonzi has traveled plenty with his horn, playing his own music and backing up bigwigs across the globe, but he's made an even bigger impact in the world of jazz education. He's managed to share his wisdom through master classes, Inside Improvisationhis series of books published by Advance Musicand his in-the-classroom teaching at the New England Conservatory (NEC). But not everybody can attend a masterclass, go to NEC or find their own way through jazz pedagogy on paper, and that's where these DVDs come in.
Bergonzi explored chordal/harmonic nuts-and-bolts on Creating A Jazz Vocabulary Vol. 1 (Jazz Heaven, 2011) and some more complex topics, like modal sequencing, shapes and chord substitutions, on Creating A Jazz Vocabulary Vol. 2 (Jazz Heaven, 2011). Now he returns with two more DVDs that are chock full of different ideas to get the mind thinking and fingers moving.
Jerry Bergonzi Creating A Jazz Vocabulary Vol. 3 Jazz Heaven 2014
The third volume in this series of instructional DVDs/downloads veers away from heady harmonic discussions and focuses on rhythm, in all of its infinite variations, as a springboard to creation. The subtitle"Melodic Rhythm: A Rhythmic Approach To Creating Melodies"says is all, yet barely hints at what's waiting inside. Bergonzi, with some assistance from saxophonist Brian Levy
Bergonzi begins by mentioning a moment where trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie
At one point in the video, Bergonzi notes that students often lose focus on the specificity of an excercise and over-complicate things because they "lack the ability to stick with the obvious." Truer words have never been spoken. At times like these, it's easy to appreciate the guru/player/theorist balance that exists within Bergonzi's pedagogical approach(es). Play-alongs, PDFs and a sixty minute interview with Bergonzi are the icing on the cake here, but the guided instruction from this master performer/educator is the most valuable part of this package.
Jerry Bergonzi Saxophone Mastery Jazz Heaven 2014
The information presented on the Creating A Jazz Vocabulary series is applicable to all instruments, but this disc is sax-specific. Bergonzi breaks down the essentials here, from embouchure and reed choice to tonguing and vibrato, and he has plenty to say. He explores the "no-embouchure embouchure," measures pressure via octave jumps without the octave key, visits altissimo territory and gives a look at overtones. Saxophone players of all levels and educators looking to pick up some choice informational tidbits will find plenty to chew on.
Bergonzi's presentation here is a bit more informal than on his previous Jazz Heaven discs, but it's just as informative. He gives away some "trade secrets," like alternate fingerings and hand positions, that can help aspiring saxophonists and make advanced players see the instrument in a new way. He teaches by saying and showing, with saxophone in hand, and this blend of the aural and visual helps to clarify things as he bounces from topic to topic.

Katy Perry's Roar could be the secret to staying on track with your excercise resolutions.
Spotify has revealed a list of the tracks topping gym-goers' playlists across the globe with Eminem, Britney Spears and Pitbull among those featuring.
It has also unveiled the ultimate workout playlist based on the popularity of tracks coupled with scientific analysis of the songs that will make you sweat harder in the gym.
The music streaming service analysed over 6.7 million workout playlists globally and Can't Hold Us by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis was the most popular choice followed by Wake Me Up by Avicii, 'Till I Collapse by Eminem and Don't You Worry Child by Swedish House Mafia.
Men work out more frequently during the latter part of the week and feel the burn to a range of music from classic tracks such as Eye of the Tiger by Survivor and Eminem's aptly named 'Till I Collapse.
Data reveals more women opt for a morning workout over men's lunchtime trip to the gym.
Women are choosing to sweat it out at the beginning of the week with modern classics such as Rihanna's We Found Love. And women have a greater tendency than men to exercise in time to the beat.
Spotify has partnered with the Music in Exercise and Sport Group at Brunel University in London to create the ultimate workout playlist based on tempo (BPM), style and lyrical content.
"When synching your movements to the beat of the music, increase the intensity of your workout by raising the music tempo by one or two BPMs beyond your comfort zone - this will increase your workrate with the added benefit that the difference in effort will be almost imperceptible," the university's Dr Costas Karageorghis said.

Wearing the appropriate sports attire, she donned a pair of leggings and a long sleeved t-shirt for her outside fitness session.
Imogen has made it her New Years resolution to keep in shape and has recently signed up for a month's worth of intense Bikram Yoga.
Writing on her Twitter page last week she said: "Hitting the gym today!!! Get this body back and rid of the Christmas rolls."

Survey Finds 3 Out Of 4 Kids Not Getting Enough Excercise

Listen to Report
The CDC released the results of a national fitness survey today that finds that most kids arent getting enough exercise.
The study finds that only one in four kids nationwide gets the recommended hour or more of daily exercise. Alexia Clarke is program coordinator of the New Jersey based STEPS For Kids, an organization that fights childhood obesity. She says the factors include too much technology and too little outdoor time.
Were seeing less physical activity in schools which would be a pretty consistent way for kids to meet that time. The lack of recess is something that the Institute of Medicine talked about last year with the weight of the nation as a need that has to be addressed bringing more physical activity into schools.
Clarke says the obesity rate among children in New Jersey has stabilized in recent years but adds they are still dealing with the problem of kids who are already obese.
